Leeds United: Promotion now a two-way battle with Sheffield United

Saturday’s results in the Championship provided yet another twist in what is turning out to be a season to remember for fans of Leeds United, Norwich City and Sheffield United.

The Canaries kicked off proceedings by hammering Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Carrow Road, a result which would have put their promotion rivals under a considerable amount of pressure heading into their clashes. Chris Wilder’s Blades responded with a fine victory of their own, beating play-off chasing Preston North End 1-0 yet Leeds were unable to back-up their win over Millwall last week as they succumbed to defeat at Birmingham City.

In what was a frustrating afternoon for the Whites, Marcelo Bielsa’s side were unable to break down their opponents despite dominating large periods of the game at St Andrew’s. This result allowed their Yorkshire rivals to leapfrog them in the league but more importantly allowed Norwich to move eight points clear of third-place in the standings.

With just six games left to play this season, the Canaries are almost certain to finish in the automatic promotion positions which leaves just one spot for either the Blades or Leeds to fill with West Bromwich Albion unlikely to make up the seven-point gap.

It can be argued that the Whites have a tougher run-in compared to Chris Wilder’s side as they still have to face a resurgent Aston Villa side who are battling it out with a host of other clubs to secure a play-off position.

However, United still have to host Nottingham Forest, a team which they lost to earlier on this season and is experiencing a solid end to the campaign under their new manager Martin O’Neill.

Even if both sides prevail in these particular fixtures, giving just how competitive the Championship is, they will have to be on top form against whoever they face in the next four weeks of action as any slip-up could prove costly.

What do you think Leeds fans? Is it now just a straight battle between your side and Sheffield United? How many points do you think Bielsa will need to accumulate in the final six fixtures? Let us know below.

Yet another error: Tottenham fans moan about Hugo Lloris after last-gasp Anfield clanger

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to criticise Hugo Lloris, after the 32-year-old Frenchman’s inability to hold a tame Mohamed Salah effort saw Spurs concede a last-gasp winner against Liverpool at Anfield.

It is not the first time this season that the French international has made a mistake, most notably against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, and fans are beginning to run out of patience with the former Lyon stopper.

The North London Derby of 2008 may never be matched for drama. Lewis from Norwich City Central explains why it’s his all time favourite derby in the video below…

Salah’s effort was weak, as the Egyptian attempted to make something of a high, lofted ball. The 26-year-old nodded towards Lloris, who spilled the ball onto Toby Alderweireld before both men watched it agonisingly trickle over the line.

It was certainly an effort that Lloris could’ve held onto, and it is another error that has cost his teammates in a game where they were arguably the better side – as captain, he should be a key figure, but he is proving to be a huge liability.

Let’s see what the Tottenham supporters on Twitter have been saying about the howler…

Teenage talent: Birmingham fans are pleased with Ryan Burke contract news

The news was confirmed on Wednesday, with Burke being one of the youngsters to be offered a professional deal by the Championship outfit.

Goalkeeper Zach Jeacock and midfielder Caolan Boyd-Munce are also amongst those to be offered professional deals by the Blues.

Burke took to social media on Wednesday to reveal his delight and that led to a number of the Birmingham supporters hailing the teenager.

The real deal: Leeds fans excited by Mateusz Bogusz

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans on Twitter have been getting excited about youngster Mateusz Bogusz.

Bogusz has had an extraordinary start to his time with Leeds’ U23s. The Polish midfielder has made just six appearances for the side but had an incredible impact during that time, scoring twice and setting up three goals.

The 17-year-old was signed from Polish outfit Ruch Chorzow in January. He had made his debut in Poland aged just 16 and he made 34 league appearances before signing for Leeds, scoring six goals in the process.

Leeds have seen some fantastic youngsters pass through their ranks in recent years with the likes of Lewis Cook being developed into Premier League players and fans are hoping that Bogusz is next up in a long line of talent coming through the academy.

Supporters on Twitter have been anticipating his first-team debut for weeks and excitement has only been growing around his future after his recent performances.

Is it necessary? Wolves fans appear to be split over Asia Trophy participation

[ad_pod ]

On Monday the four teams to play in the Premier League’s Asia Trophy in China during pre-season were announced with Wolves, West Ham, Manchester City and Newcastle all set to be involved.

The competition will take place in July but reacting to the news on Twitter, Wolves fans have been sharing mixed views.

Some individuals were looking forward to the prospect of a long distance away trip but there were more serious concerns for other fans, questioning where the club’s priorities lie.

One fan claimed it was unnecessary and could affect them going into the next season, with the potential of playing in Europe still a real possibility.

Wolves currently sit in seventh place in the Premier League so qualifying for the Europa League may be on the cards, through that channel, or via the FA Cup.

Others meanwhile sarcastically made reference to the ticketing system that had annoyed many fans when applying for FA Cup semi-final tickets.

The 2019 Asia Trophy will be its ninth instalment. Having been founded in 2003, it’s a competition that’s played every two years. The previous winners in 2017 were Liverpool.

Here’s the best of the reaction from the Molineux faithful.

Are the jaws of Manchester City about to bite Benjamin Mendy?

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City are a side famed for their immense strength in depth and financial power, but Pep Guardiola has been without a full-fit, natural left-back for almost the entirety of two seasons.

The 2017 summer transfer window was a watershed moment for the club. After finishing in 4th place in the league which, according to a multitude of keyboard warrior experts, confirmed Fraudiola was indeed a chequebook manager after all, City went into the transfer market with a coherent plan: to sign quality at full-back.

Out went Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and club legend Pablo Zabaleta; in came Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy.

The latter was one of the stars of Monaco’s route to the 2016/17 Champions League semi-final, which included a last-16 victory over City, alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Thomas Lemar.

And the scene was set for Mendy to blossom into a perfect long-term option at left-back following an incredibly bright opening to his time in Manchester. A cruciate ligament rupture, however, has sent his development on a downward spiral which has sent his reputation tumbling with it.

The notorious social media sensation has had his moments in the limelight. City fans have embraced his exuberance and playful attitude and, to a certain degree, his uncensored media antics have been a breath of fresh air within a footballing world which strangles the vast majority of players from expressing true personality in the public eye.

But a distinct shift in opinion is taking place as frustration begins to build regarding Mendy’s lack of professionalism. Back in September 2018, the France international was disciplined after arriving late for treatment the day after he attended Anthony Joshua’s world championship victory over Alexander Povetkin in London.

Forgiveness was offered as he started five Premier League games shortly after his late-show, including high-magnitude fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester United, but another injury setback and yet another moment of off-field controversy has induced a fresh set of questions regarding his long-term future.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Mendy was spotted at a nightclub in the early hours on Saturday morning last weekend, just a few hours before he was due to attend a training session – a damning revelation which doesn’t bode well for his future.

And this is what Guardiola had to say about the situation: “I would prefer him to go home earlier but I don’t control the players in that situation. They are old enough to know what they have to do. I’m not his father.”

The man who talks so much about sharks may be swimming into the gaping jaws of a great white this summer after his latest display of disrespect towards club and manager.

Guardiola was ruthless in his decision to offload Clichy, Sagna, Zabelta, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri, Nolito, Kelechi Iheanacho, Fernando and Aleksander Kolarov all in the same summer, so there is no reason why Mendy should be acting so utterly impervious.

Let’s not forget that, on the rare occasions the 24-year-old has been fit enough for selection, he regularly rattles the ball into the penalty area with as much ferocity as his legs can physically provide, as if he is a retired banker playing squash. This is football: the aim of the game isn’t to kick it really really hard, Benjamin, some finesse and intelligence is required to pick the lock.

With the latest display of disrespect lingering in Guardiola’s mind, there is almost no doubt that his attention will be turning towards the summer market. A replacement is needed; City cannot go another season without a reliable and exemplary professional to call upon.

The tangible effects of Kyle Walker’s impact in City’s first season were there for all to see, even if his second campaign has been comparably underwhelming. A player who contributes to the homegrown quota, has experience in the Premier League and possesses both the engine and technique to influence the game at both ends of the pitch, Walker has provided the blueprint for future acquisitions.

A desire to follow that blueprint will lead Guardiola in one clear direction: straight to the King Power Stadium to Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell is reportedly a leading target for the Citizens following his brilliant rise to prominence. The early stages of his career hinted that he would grow into a decent footballer at this level, but he is already exceeding expectations with the consistency of his performances for both Leicester and England.

The 6-cap international only turned 22 shortly before the turn of the year and that will naturally intensify interest from Guardiola and the rest of the decision makers at the Etihad Stadium.

Considering he could form solid understandings at international level with both Raheem Sterling and John Stones, his age, the fact he would contribute to the homegrown quota, and the quality he has already showcased in the Premier League, it’s fair to say it would be a stroke of genius if City can secure his signature.

Mendy may well have put the final nail in his coffin by underlining his lack of commitment to his career last weekend, thus forcing Guardiola’s hand with Chilwell’s development providing plenty of food for thought.

Man United simply have to beat City to signing of full-back following latest update: Opinion

The tide has turned fully in Manchester over the last decade in footballing terms, with City now well cemented as the number one destination for incoming players.

Success in both the league and domestic cups has meant City hold the title of leading club in one of England’s biggest cities, and United will be desperate to get back to the level which saw them previously dominate the Premier League under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Both clubs are now in the market for similar players too, meaning their rivalry only gets another layer added to it, and with news emerging this weekend from the Daily Mail that Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a target for both clubs, it seems like they will be going head to head again.

However, we here in the Tavern feel that it is United who need to ensure they capture the Palace starlet, who has been in fine form since being given his chance by Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

And while City have some superb talent and would be a good destination for Wan-Bissaka, it is United who need defensive recruitments, especially in the full-back areas, where Ashley Young and Mateo Darmian continue to lack the quality a club like United need.

In Wan-Bissaka, United would be getting a player who has bags of energy, pace and willing, and he’d be a brilliant long-term fit at Old Trafford.

City already have the likes of Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy who are going to take some displacing at their respective positions, while at United, Wan-Bissaka would be able to come straight in and make the position his own.

Either way, this is a player who Solskjaer needs to be going all out to get.
