Bull wants Bruno Lage to keep Adama Traore at Wolves - Exclusive

Wolves fans were often bored watching their team last season with a lack of threat in the final third, so Bruno Lage must implement an attacking style of play as he did at Benfica. To do that, he’s got to keep Adama Traore according to Wolves legend, Steve Bull.

Lage has been well known for his attacking style of play which saw his Benfica side score a mesmerising 85 goals in just 27 matches, winning 18 of their 19 league fixtues as they romped to the Liga Nos title. Someone who could help implement that at Molineux is Traore, but Lage could have a battle on his hands to keep the linked-away winger.

The former assistant coach at both Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday is sure to bring about a more front-foot approach, something that would appear to suit Wolves as they boast attacking options such as Pedro Neto, Traore, Daniel Podence and Raul Jimenez, although those four players only managed to score a combined total of 14 goals in the Premier League last season.

If Wolves are to play a more attacking style of football going forward then Traore must be part of it with his raw pace and strength a huge asset to Lage, if he wishes to start the winger or bring him on as an impact sub, something Bull spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern about:

“If Lage wants to play 4-4-2 then he should keep Traore and put him on the right or the left and have one of Podence or Neto on the other side of Jimenez and that would be a good front three.

“I think if he wants to play attacking football then he’s got to keep him.”

Traore is by far and away one of the most difficult players to come up against as he is relentless and last season was no different as he attempted 214 dribbles in the league which was 50 more than Sadio Mane who attempted the second-most so, Lage would be mad to try and move him on and not to deploy him in a more attacking system.

West Ham enquiry made for Dragowski

According to a report by Viola News, West Ham United have ‘asked for information’ over recent weeks in an enquiry to sign colossal Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski.

The Lowdown: Hammers searching for a shot stopper?

Despite reports indicating that manager David Moyes’ summer priorities are a new striker, new centre-half and permanent deal for Lingard (Claret & Hugh), West Ham have also been touted to bolster other positions.

One of those is in between the sticks, with current number one Lukasz Fabianski arguably approaching the end of his West Ham career despite recently signing a one-year extension in east London.

The Hammers could be on the lookout for a new shot stopper as his possible heir this summer and the club have already been linked to the likes of Sam Johnstone.

The Latest: West Ham enquiry now made for Dragowski

As per local Florence outlet Viola News, the Irons have now made an enquiry to sign Dragowski amid the search for a possible new keeper.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, West Ham have apparently asked for information in recent weeks but are not the only club looking into a possible deal for the 23-year-old.

They face stiff competition from the Premier League with Tottenham, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers all placing Dragowski on their radar.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse started 36 matches for Fiorentina over the 2020/2021 Serie A campaign, keeping eight clean sheets in that time (Transfermarkt).

The Verdict: Promising but not a priority…

Drawgowski comes as a decent prospect in the goalkeeping department, having made his international debut already at just 23 and playing at a consistently in a top league throughout 20/21.

However, given West Ham’s considerable lack of depth going forward, with star striker Michail Antonio in and out of the side due to reoccurring fitness issues, the Irons have bigger priorities.

A permanent deal for Lingard and new centre-forward should sit top of the pile when it comes to West Ham’s transfer agenda.

The east Londoners should also be monitoring new centre-backs ahead of new keepers, especially given the club’s decision not to renew Fabian Balbuena’s current deal.

Fabianski’s extended stay means West Ham can bide their time in search of a new keeper, but the same cannot be said for other positions in Moyes’ squad.

Crystal Palace linked to Jeremie Boga

Crystal Palace must swoop for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga over the upcoming transfer window as Steve Parish looks to overhaul his first-team squad.

What’s the story?

According to the Evening Standard, Palace have a long-standing interest in the 24-year-old, although it’s not known whether they’ll return for the former Chelsea man this summer.

Boga has established a sizeable reputation for himself since arriving in Serie A, attracting the attention of several clubs across the continent.

Palace need him

The Ivorian has been linked with moves to the likes of Marseille, Napoli and fellow Premier League outfit Leicester City in recent weeks, but it’s the Eagles who need him most.

After four stable years under Roy Hodgson, the south London outfit are entering a transitional period following the 73-year-old’s departure, and a major rebuild is going to be required.

Christian Benteke has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal, easing the burden placed upon Parish for significant investment this summer. However, many other key figures are set to depart Selhurst Park at the end of the month.

It means new faces will be needed if the capital club are going to stand any chance of maintaining their top-flight status next season, and the arrival of Boga would help Palace do just that.

The tricky forward bagged four goals and provided two assists in 27 Serie A appearances throughout 2020/21, but his overall game was more impressive than the numbers suggest.

Boga completed 3.2 dribbles per game in the recently concluded campaign, far more than any of his Sassuolo teammates achieved and also successfully dribbled past 91 opponents, the third-highest number in the Italian top division.

With Palace set to be without their most prolific dribbler Eberechi Eze until the new year through injury, and with their fourth-most fruitful dribbler, Andros Townsend, nearing the exit door, the arrival of Boga would certainly ease the blow of their absence.

Signing the £18 million rated wing wizard would ease the Eagles’ transition into life after Hodgson, and Parish must swoop for the ace before one of his rivals beat him to the punch.

And, in other news…Get it done: Parish must sanction Crystal Palace swoop for “outstanding” £10m beast

Derby handed Teden Mengi transfer boost

Derby County have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Teden Mengi back to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Athletic, who claim that Wayne Rooney’s side appear to be on course to land the Manchester United centre-back on another loan deal in the current transfer window, with the Premier League runners-up content to send the 19-year-old back to the Championship side after they secured survival on the final day of the season.

Rooney will be buzzing

With Derby remaining under a transfer embargo due to Mel Morris’ ongoing search to find a buyer for the club, something that limits the Rams’ transfer activity to loans and free transfers, as well as any potential incomings having to be paid a sensible wage, the news that Mengi looks set to make a return to Pride Park this summer is sure to have Rooney buzzing.

Indeed, over his nine Championship appearances while on loan at the club last season, the £1.35m-rated defender turned in a number of impressive performances in what were extremely challenging circumstances.

In the league, the 19-year-old helped his side keep a total of one clean sheet, while also making an average of 1.1 interceptions, one tackle, 2.4 clearances and winning 3.8 duels per game, with these metrics culminating in the youngster earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.67.

As such, with Rooney looking to build a side in the transfer window that is capable of mounting a push towards the top half of the second tier table next season, the potential return of a player whom the 35-year-old manager claimed is a “fantastic” centre-back will give the former England captain at least one reason to be cheerful in the coming months, particularly when factoring the mess that his side remain in away from the pitch.

In other news: Derby handed huge blow over £18k-p/w “maverick”, it will leave Rooney livid

Serie A expert backs Fonseca to do well at Everton - Exclusive

Everton are diving through their list of potential managers following the swift departure of Carlo Ancelotti back to Real Madrid and Forza Italian Football editor in chief Conor Clancy has backed Paulo Fonseca to do well at Goodison Park if given the chance.

The Toffees will need to get this appointment spot on as they have spent far too much money over the last few years to be languishing in mid-table, and Fonseca has been tipped as a contender to take up the hot seat at Everton by The Athletic.

Fonseca was the man who guided Roma to the Europa League semi-final which they ultimately lost against Manchester United because of their defensive frailties, however they showed glimpses of real quality especially on the counter-attack and from set-pieces.

Everton have hired and sacked their fair share of managers recently with the likes of Marco Silva, Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce the most recent examples, but Clancy has backed Fonseca to be the man to get it right at Everton, as he told Football FanCast exclusively:

“He got Roma to the semi-final of the Europa League which they shouldn’t have been anywhere near, and I know they got hammered in the end by Man United but that was just a 15-minute collapse.

“I quite like Fonseca and I do think that level of job just below the very top tier is one that he would do really well at and I think if he got the Everton job then I’d back him to do a very decent bit of work there.”

Everton started the season brightly, however, once their form fell off a cliff in 2021 their hopes of a European spot were dashed and considering they lost to the likes of Sheffield United and Newcastle United at home, fans must have expected that outcome.

The Toffees may struggle to keep some of their top players such as James Rodriguez and Richarlison now that Ancelotti’s has left as he appeared to be the glue keeping them all together after several poor seasons at Everton.

Spurs legend sets Mason huge target

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has told Football FanCast that interim head coach Ryan Mason will not bring a number of young players into the squad before the end of the season because they have to win every game.

Mason has taken over from Jose Mourinho until the end of the season and oversaw a win in his first game in charge.

Spurs beat Southampton 2-1 on Wednesday, coming from behind to do so, and he made some interesting team selections.

Gareth Bale came back into the team, scoring his side’s first goal, while Toby Alderweireld was also in the team and Harry Winks came on as a substitute.

Mason worked with the youth team before his promotion to interim manager and there may be a temptation for him to bring various youngsters into the team, but Roberts does not think that will be the case.

Indeed, he has told Mason and the club that every game now is must-win, especially after the Carabao Cup defeat against Manchester City which means they now only have a top-four finish to fight for.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “The thing about it is, he will give people a chance but it won’t be three, four, five, six youngsters coming in.

“You’ve still got to play Wolves, Aston Villa, Leicester, all these clubs. What we’ve got to do is win every game now until the end of the season. That’s the aim.

“If we do that, then we’ll see where we are at the end of the season and you never know, with everybody playing each other, you never know what’s going to happen.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Purslow’s ESL comments

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to Christian Purslow’s European Super League comments on social media.

The Villa chief executive had plenty to say about the proposal on Monday, which has rocked the world of football in recent days.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham were among 12 clubs who agreed to join a new ESL.

However, following plenty of backlash from supporters all across the country, those six clubs have now all withdrawn from the proposed competition.

Talking to the media prior to the Premier League clubs pulling out of the tournament, Purslow had plenty to say.

As reported by Express & Star, Purslow described the ESL as ‘grotesque concept’.

“These proposals (European Super League) do away with sporting merit. It would enable a small number of clubs to be in this competition come what may &, for millions in football, that goes against everything the sport means & stands for.

“The idea is that the uncertainty that comes with sport, that makes it so compelling, that we all love, is actually damaging to the business models of these huge clubs. So the scheme is designed to take away that uncertainty.

“To give predictability to their businesses so that, if they’re badly managed or have a poor year, they’re still in the premier tournament. Does that sound like sport or football to you? To me it sounds a grotesque concept.”

Villa fans react

@villareport shared Purslow’s comments on Twitter on Monday lunchtime, which, as to be expected, received plenty of interaction from a number of Villa supporters.

These fans were full of praise for Purslow, with one labelling his thoughts as ‘brilliant’.
