Australia maintain DRS resolve

Australia will push for the right to enforce umpire decision reviews in its home matches at the ICC’s executive board meeting in June, despite continued Indian opposition to the system.India’s scheduled visit to Australia during the 2011-12 summer, their first tour down under since the contentious 2008 Sydney Test match that led indirectly to the adoption of the DRS, adds plenty of currency to an issue that remains divisive even after the system’s use during the World Cup.The ICC cricket committee recommended in its meeting at Lord’s that home boards be granted the right to choose whether to employ the system or not, a state of affairs that would prevent the repeat of a situation when India and hosts Sri Lanka disagreed over its use last year.James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, showed no public sign of deferring to India’s judgment following his board’s two-day meeting in Melbourne. “My personal view is strongly in support of DRS, as we know the current understanding is basically the DRS can be used by bilateral agreement of the two competing teams,” said Sutherland.”At this stage in spite of the recommendation of the cricket committee it does need to go through other bodies within the ICC in order for that to become an absolute requirement. I’m conscious of that, but certainly from a CA perspective we would be very keen for DRS to be in place for all international cricket.”An ICC plan to have BCCI officials observe the use of the DRS in Australia, during the Ashes last summer, fell through due to scheduling conflicts, but the World Cup provided a closer look for subcontinental administrators and players. There was consternation about the lbw reprieve won on a technicality by Ian Bell during India’s group match against England, but it must also be observed that Sachin Tendulkar was saved from an early dismissal in the semi-final against Pakistan by a similarly narrow DRS margin.”Obviously we all got a fair insight into that during the World Cup where the DRS system was in place for the World Cup, and that was in India,” said Sutherland.Tendulkar and the Indian captain MS Dhoni are thought to be the bulwark of Indian opposition to the system, a position that has been unchanged since Sri Lanka had much the better of the DRS during a series in Sri Lanka in late 2008.

'Reaching quarters not difficult' – Shakib

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, has said it is not difficult for his team to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals and they could even go further

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, has said it is not difficult for his team to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals and they could even go further. “We have been playing good cricket for the last 15 months, and if we qualify for the second round, why not think of something big,” Shakib said. “We have to win at least four matches to win a place in the second round. It is not difficult. I think we are capable of booking a place in the second round.”Bangladesh will go in to the World Cup ranked among the top eight teams in ODIs, and have the advantage of playing all their group games at home. Their No. 8 ICC ranking is justification of their recent form; they won two home series in 2010, beating Zimbabwe 3-1 and New Zealand 4-0, and pushed England close in an away series, losing 2-1.While Bangladesh have been giant-killers in past World Cups, beating India and South Africa in 2007, and Pakistan in 1999, their most experienced player, Mohammad Ashraful, says this time the side is firmly aiming at reaching the quarter-finals rather than looking for a few upsets.”Things are now very different to what it was in 2007,” Ashraful, who will take part in his third World Cup in the 2011 tournament, said. “In that World Cup, we were hoping for an upset or two, but this time around we are firmly aiming for the quarter-finals. There is a significant change in the mentality.”Shakib, though, said there has not been any drastic change in the way his side sees themselves. “I don’t feel that there is anything special in terms of attitude,” he said. “Ever since I started playing cricket, I have been playing to win, and I play with the same mentality now, whoever the opposition.”Three victories may be enough for Bangladesh to go past the group stage, since four out of seven teams qualify from each group. Two of their matches will be against Associate teams Ireland and Netherlands, in which they will be favourites. They will also be eyeing fixtures against West Indies, who have slipped below them in the ODI rankings, at Mirpur, and England in Chittagong, while upsets against India and South Africa are not off the cards.Bangladesh have done enough to have lost the underdog tag, but with that, and the fact that they are joint hosts for the tournament, comes added pressure. Shahriar Nafees, who will be playing his second World Cup, said the team was confident of dealing with it. “People handle pressure in different ways; some thrive under it, some play their best when they don’t have it,” he said. “But there is a stern belief within this side because we are finally winning. We know that at home we are considerably tough opposition.”While Bangladesh’s surprise success in the 2006-07 World Cup gave cricket a boost in the country, it was not until the last two years that the results improved. In the period between the last World Cup and the end of 2008, they won just five out of 34 ODIs. Since the start of 2009, though, they have maintained a win/loss ratio of 1.00 in 46 matches.Ashraful points to a victory over Sri Lanka in January 2009, in a tri-nation tournament, as the turning point in Bangladesh’s fortunes. After fast bowlers Mashrafe Mortaza and Rubel Hossain had skittled out Sri Lanka for 147, Ashraful and Shakib had put together a century partnership to help Bangladesh recover from 11 for 3, the latter making an unbeaten 92.”During that game, I had a feeling things were changing,” says Ashraful. “Previously we were happy just competing with the big teams, but that day there was a feeling prevalent that we will be able to beat the big teams if we played to our true potential.” Ashraful’s own form has been on a downward spiral since that series and, after averaging just 14.66 in the first half of 2010, he found himself dropped for the series against New Zealand and given just one match in the one against Zimbabwe. He was quick to acknowledge the recent success of the team has been built on their younger players, saying “there are other match-winners coming through.”Nafees is another player who, like Ashraful, has struggled to live up to his early promise, and, after signing with the ICL kept him out of international cricket for a year, has only played four ODIs in the last two years. He said the development of Bangladesh cricket is an on-going process and previous captains have added to it as well. “It is like a relay race,” Nafees said. “[Habibul] Bashar and his team had bought the team to a certain level and Shakib is now carrying it on. We are moving forward, that is unquestionable.”Bangladesh will kick off the World Cup with a home fixture against India on February 19.

Man City: Spence can be new Walker

Pep Guardiola and co have managed to assemble a formidable outfit in recent seasons, although never one to rest on his laurels, the 51-year-old is seemingly ready to go big again in the upcoming transfer window to further improve his Manchester City side.

While all the headlines at present have tended to focus on the increasingly likely arrival of Borussia Dortmund’s highly-sought sensation Erling Haaland, it would appear that the reigning Premier League champions are also keen to strengthen in other departments.

That’s according to recent reports, with Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg suggesting that the club are among those interested in Nottingham Forest loanee Djed Spence, with the 21-year-old believed to be available for roughly €12-15m (£10-12.5m).

Plettenberg did also insist that it is the £2.25m-rated starlet’s “dream” to play for rivals Manchester United, although Guardiola’s side may be able to steal a march on their neighbours owing to the ongoing turmoil that has consumed Old Trafford.

The next Walker?

Amid all the Haaland frenzy, recruiting an upcoming youngster who is yet to taste top-flight football may not seem a priority, although in Spence the Etihad outfit could well have a real talent on their hands, should they pluck the Englishman from parent club Middlesbrough this summer.

The attacking right-back – whose existing deal expires in 2024 – could also potentially represent a long-term heir to the club’s current incumbent Kyle Walker, with the 31-year-old perhaps unlikely to be able to remain at the real elite level for too much longer.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man’s searing pace has proven a vital asset for both club and country – he was dubbed “utterly brilliant” by Gary Lineker last year – yet the £22.5m-rated star has been plagued by injury at times this season, meaning he has featured in just 20 of the club’s 33 league games.

In Spence then, Guardiola has an affordable and financially attractive prospect who is only seemingly going to get better, with the London-born ace having been labelled “absolutely outstanding” by former title winner Wes Morgan for his form at the City Ground so far this season.

On what has proven to be an astute season-long loan capture by Forest, the England U21 international has thrived under Steve Cooper’s care, featuring 44 times in all competitions to help the Championship outfit to the FA Cup quarter-finals and keep them in with a shout of automatic promotion.

As well as chipping in with three goals and five assists across all fronts so far this term, the £4.4k-per-week sensation has also produced some promising defensive statistics, averaging 1.6 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 1.2 clearances per game in the second tier.

It has been his form against top-flight opposition in the FA Cup, however, that has particularly caught the eye in the second-half of the campaign, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright speaking highly of the defender after Forest’s win over the Gunners back in January.

Speaking on Wrighty’s House Podcast (quotes via Nottinghamshire Post), the former England international said of Spence that: “But let me say, that was one of the best right back performances I have seen for a very long time. A very long time.

“If we are talking about right-backs performing at an unbelievable level, we’re talking Reece James and Trent (Alexander-Arnold).

“But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

The 6 foot and a half speedster now potentially has the chance to test himself against those names mentioned above next season, should he make the leap to the higher level, with a move to City seemingly an intriguing option for all parties.

Not only would he prove a quality understudy to the more senior Walker next term, but he could also eventually prove just the man to replace him further down the line.

Abbottabad tops table after third straight win

Abbottabad made it three wins out of three with a crushing defeat of Lahore Ravi by an innings and 106 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The hosts needed another 200 runs to make Abbottabad bat again when play started, but never looked like getting them as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Mohammad Saad, who made 44, was the only batsman to go past 20, as Lahore were bowled out for 149. Three bowlers shared the wickets, with left-arm spinner Khalid Usman, who took 4 for 33, leading the way, while Ahmed Jamal and Mohammad Naeem took 3 for 24 and 3 for 63 respectively.Lahore Shalimar moved up to third in the points table after a comprehensive win by an innings and 20 runs over Quetta at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Saad Nasim was in the thick of the action again, taking four more wickets to finish with 9 for 110 in the match. He was backed up by Asif Ghafoor, who was miserly in taking 3 for 33 from 19 overs. Sabir Hussain was the only batsman to offer any resistance, crafting a patient 53 from 176 balls, but got little support from the rest, as Quetta were bundled out for 210.State Bank of Pakistan drew their game against Hyderabad, but picked up three points by taking the first-innings lead at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad to stay second in the points table. Kashif Perez dismissed Naved Yasin before he could add to his overnight score of 102, but Gulraiz Sadaf (50) and Nayar Abbas (41) added 83 for the eighth wicket to take SBP past Hyderabad. Both eventually to Perez, who took 6 for 87, as HBL made 385, a lead of 59. Azeem Ghumman made his second-half century of the game, stroking 77 from 93 balls, with nine fours, as Hyderabad ended the final day on 158 for 4.Pakistan Television eked out a 38-run first-innings lead to pick up three points against Karachi Whites at the National Stadium in Karachi, as the match petered out in to a draw after the play was cancelled on the third as a mark of respect for politician Imran Farooq, who was killed in London and his body was brought to Karachi for the funeral. PT lost Yasim Murtaza early on the final day but Naeem Anjum and Junaid Nadir shared an eighth-wicket stand of 38 to give them the lead. Offspinner Atif Maqbool picked up five for 99, but it wasn’t enough to keep PT from picking up the points. Asiz Zarkir and Wajihuddin’s 116-run partnership was the highlight of Karachi’s second innings of 192 for 5, while Mohammad Ali took four wickets.

Bielsa must unleash Gelhardt vs Villa

Leeds United are finally back in Premier League action this evening as they head south to the Midlands to face Aston Villa.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side haven’t played in over two-and-a-half weeks now when they were defeated by lowly Newcastle United, so the Argentine will be expecting to see a reaction tonight.

Having struggled to find the net in that game – something that has been a regular problem in the absence of the injured Patrick Bamford – Bielsa could help himself by selecting Joe Gelhardt in his starting XI.

It’s evident that the Daniel James experiment upfront isn’t and will never work. He’s just too small and weak to have much of an influence up against Premier League defences, that much is evident by the fact that he’s scored zero goals in the role this term.

Gelhardt may only be 19 but he has already displayed his impressive attributes at the senior level. He’s capable of making dangerous runs in behind the defence, something that saw him earn his first professional goal in the defeat to Chelsea.

Scoring at Stamford Bridge is no mean feat, that’s for sure.

Elsewhere in his other 303 minutes in the top-flight, he has provided three assists, suggesting he can add more than just goals to a lacklustre frontline.

Gelhardt is already becoming a huge favourite amongst the fanbase, dressing room and within the coaching staff, according to The Athletic, who also claim that ‘the electricity he creates when he touches the ball has been matched by his impact.’

The teenage sensation has earned comparisons to Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney in terms of playing style by his attacking teammate Bamford. “He is the same kind of build as Rooney was. A stocky lad, great finisher,” he said (via the Yorkshire Evening Post).

Even Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has been hugely impressed in what limited game time the former Wigan graduate has had at Elland Road.

He claimed: “He’s like a human wrecking ball. I like him, he’s really exciting. He’s fast, he’s aggressive, he gets on the ball, he takes people on. Once he gets into the box, he loves it. That’s where he can do most of his damage.”

Also dubbed a “massive talent”, it’s evident that the youngster has the required skills and mindset to thrive at the very top. Leeds are still without Bamford, so it should be a no-brainer to start him, especially as he’s fit and available.

It could be a game-changing call from the Argentine.

Captain Pinal Shah then contributed 53 while Yusuf Pathan chipped in with a quickfire 35 off 26 deliveries. Quick bowler Nehemiah Odhiambo was the best Kenyan bowler on display, taking four wickets, although he was somewhat expensive, going at almost four an over.Kenya replied with 327, but were in trouble at 103 for 6 before Odoyo and Odhiambo stitched together a 148-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Odoyo eventually fell to Ajitesh Argal, who finished with 3 for 55, as Kenya took a 19-run lead.Baroda lost opener Devdhar before a run had been scored in their second innings but Kolsawala and Shah added 101 for the third wicket to make sure a draw was the only possible result. This was the first match of Baroda’s tour of Kenya. Leeds: Raphinha being eyed by Arsenal

Leeds United are in deep bother of losing a number of their first-team stars this summer.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked with an exit from Elland Road but one man that can’t keep the speculation away is Raphinha.

What’s the word?

Reports over recent months have suggested that the Leeds winger is being courted by Barcelona ahead of a possible summer switch.

However, another club have now entered the race to sign him in the shape of fellow Premier League outfit Arsenal.

That’s the news according to Fabrizio Romano who took to his ‘Here We Go’ podcast on Tuesday to reveal the following information:

“I can tell you that Arsenal also ask for information about Raphinha of Leeds. Barcelona are leading the race for Raphinha. But also Arsenal ask for information for Raphinha.”

Fans will rage

If Leeds do stay up under the guidance of Jesse Marsch and look to build towards next season, losing undoubtedly their best offensive player will come as a huge blow, one that will no doubt leave supporters full of rage.

Marsch is yet to take charge of the Whites during a transfer window and watching the Brazil international head for pastures new would not be the most ideal of ways to begin his summer.

Raphinha was signed from Rennes in the summer of 2020 and has been simply breathtaking for Leeds since being acquired by Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine has a keen eye for talent and together with Victor Orta, the 25-year-old has become one of the club’s best buys in recent memory.

His estimations have soared since coming to the Premier League, helped by some simply stunning football. Not only is the winger capable of working hard for the team and pressing relentlessly, but his qualities on the ball are marvellous too.

He has scored 15 times and registered 12 assists in the top-flight of English football, with nine of those strikes coming this term alone.

As a result, Leeds would be drastically worse off without him. Indeed, it’s not too unreasonable to suggest that they’d be heading for the Championship without a prayer if he was not fit or even at Thorp Arch this season.

Consequently, they must do all they can to hold onto him. Admittedly it feels like a difficult task but everyone associated with the club will be rather upset if he does depart.

Combine that with speculation surrounding Phillips and this summer is looking a bleak one for the Yorkshire side.
