Bhuvneshwar ready for Tests

Bhuvneshwar Kumar*, one of the new faces in India’s Test squad, has said he was hopeful of getting a call-up for the series against Australia. While Bhuvneshwar replaced Parvinder Awana as the third seamer in the 15-member squad, Dhawan replaced Gautam Gambhir.”I would be lying if I say I was not hoping for this,” Bhuvneshwar told . “Having done well in the ODIs recently, I thought it would be the right time for me to have a go in the Tests as well.”Bhuvneshwar made his debut in a Twenty20 match against Pakistan last December and made an immediate impression with his swing. He returned with match figures of 3 for 9 and continued his good form in the ODIs where he regularly bowled 10-over long spells. When asked if he was ready for Test cricket on Indian pitches, he said, “Having played five years of domestic cricket, I know what it takes to get wickets on Indian pitches. Test cricket won’t be like the ODIs, but I’m ready for the challenge, mentally and physically.”Bhuvneshwar, who has taken 149 first-class wickets in 46 matches at an average of 26.02, said he would continue sticking to his strengths.”I’m not overdoing things. I know my strength, which is swing and seam, and I will not try anything that would weaken my strong point.”* February 11 6.15pm GMT This story has been modified to focus on Bhuvneshwar Kuamr

Khulna Division crushed Chittagong Division by 299 runs in Bogra to complete their third win in as many National Cricket League matches. Abdur Razzak’s 9 for 84 in the first innings, which was also the best bowling figures in Bangladesh first-class cricket, put Khulna right on top before Anamul Haque’s hundred ensured a massive second-innings target for Chittagong.Their eventual final-innings total was only 153 with offspinner Nizamuddin picking up a five-wicket haul while Razzak added four to make it 13 for the match. With the bat it was four-half centuries from Imrul Kayes, Tushar Imran, Ziaur Rahman and Dolar Mahmud that took Khulna to 416 in the first innings, before Razzak almost single-handedly bowled out Chittagong for 307. The 109-run lead was boosted by another 343 as Anamul blasted 127 with ten boundaries and three sixes. Aftab Ahmed’s 52 and captain Nafees Iqbal’s 45 provided the only resistance for Chittagong in the second innings, as just four batsmen reached double-figures.Four-time defending champions Rajshahi Division picked up their first win in the tournament when they beat hosts Rangpur Divisionby 224 runs in Rangpur. Batting first, Rajshahi made only 232 runs, despite Maisuqur Rahman’s century, but they still managed to take a 61-run first-innings lead.Left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam picked up three wickets while Shafiul Islam, Farhad Reza and Saqlain Sajib took two each. Farhad’s unbeaten century then gave Rajshahi a lead of 358 runs, after they declared their second innings on 297 for 9. Left-arm seamer Sajidul Islam finished with eight wickets for Rangpur, who missed the services of Naeem Islam badly.Rangpur were bowled out for just 134 runs in the second innings with Sajib taking four wickets and Shafiul finishing with three as Rajshahi picked up seven points from the game.Sylhet Division also registered their first win by beating Dhaka Division by 10 wickets at home. After sending in Dhaka to bat first, Sylhet’s three-man pace attack bowled out the visitors for 84, with the experienced Tapash Baisya taking 6 for 37.Alok Kapali and Rajin Saleh then shared a 240-run stand for the fourth wicket, both scoring centuries as Sylhet piled on 390 runs in their first innings. Dhaka’s fightback in the second innings only amounted to a lead of a single run. It took Imtiaz Hossain just one blow off Nazmul Islam’s left-arm spin to complete the victory and a handy ten points.

Pakistan and Australia will play three Twenty20s and three ODIs in the UAE in in August and September, it has been confirmed. The matches will begin in the late evening to avoid the worst of the daytime heat. The ODIs played between August 28 and September 3 will begin at 6pm local time, and end at 1.45am the following morning. The Twenty20s that follow are set to begin at 8pm and end at 11.The average daytime temperature in the UAE in August-September is 38-40C, while the average nighttime temperature is 26-29C.There had been much debate over the actual make-up of the series, which is a ‘home’ series for Pakistan. The Australian Cricketers’ Association had expressed its concerns about playing ODIs in such hot weather. This had prompted the series to be changed to a six-match Twenty20 affair, which was approved by the ICC in June. The PCB had however then approached Cricket Australia during the ICC’s annual conference in Kuala Lumpur in the last week of June, putting forward a request to review the composition of the series once again. ESPNcricinfo understands that the series’ broadcaster had objected to six Twenty20s for commercial reasons. The Australian board reportedly agreed in principle to the PCB’s proposal, but would not sign off on the deal until it had discussed it with its players. The series was initially scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka but Pakistan were forced to search for an alternate venue after Sri Lanka backed out of hosting it in May. The inaugural Sri Lanka Premier League is to be played in August, and clashed with the dates of the proposed Pakistan-Australia series, prompting Sri Lanka Cricket’s decision to withdraw as hosts.

Tamim 'completely surprised' by Law decision

Tamim Iqbal, one of Bangladesh’s senior players, has said he had no idea that the national coach Stuart Law was going to resign

Tamim Iqbal: “This is the tragedy with Bangladesh cricket: whenever we do something good, something bad happens”•Associated Press

Tamim Iqbal, one of Bangladesh’s top batsmen, has said he had no idea that the national coach Stuart Law was going to resign. He was talking hours after Law announced his decision to quit as Bangladesh coach.”I’m completely taken by surprise,” Tamim told ESPNcricinfo. “But family comes first.” Law was stepping down less than a month after guiding Bangladesh to the final of the Asia Cup.Tamim said Law had added to the professionalism brought in by his predecessors as coach, the Australian pair of Dav Whatmore and Jamie Siddons. “Law gave us the belief that we can do it,” Tamim said. “And that only pumped up the players. He used to give us tremendous amount of confidence. A team like us needs the confidence and he always supported us.”The relationship between a coach and the players takes time to develop usually and with Stuey, we were almost there. Everyone was enjoying his presence in the dressing room and he was enjoying being with us as well.”Tamim also gave a personal example of Law’s influence. “When I was going through a rough patch during the Pakistan series (last December) he kept pushing me to work hard. There is one line I can never forget. He said: ‘Someone is hurt now and someone will be hurt in the Asia Cup.'” Tamim made four half-centuries in four matches in the Asia Cup and finished as the second-highest run-maker in the tournament.Tamim said he was also disappointed as he felt Law’s departure was a bit of a backward step for Bangladesh cricket. “We will miss him definitely. This is the tragedy with Bangladesh cricket: whenever we do something good, something bad happens.”Edited by Siddarth Ravindran

James Taylor, the Leicestershire batsman, will captain England Lions in their four-day and one-day matches against Sri Lanka A next month

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jul-2011James Taylor, the Leicestershire batsman, will captain England Lions in their four-day and one-day matches against Sri Lanka A next month. The squads include Scott Borthwick, the Durham legspinner, Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales while Ben Stokes, the Durham allrounder, is included for the one-day matches.Taylor takes over the Lions captaincy from James Hildreth who led them on the tour of West Indies and against Sri Lanka, at Derby, earlier this season. Taylor has already faced Sri Lanka A for Leicestershire and scored an unbeaten 168 in the recent four-day match with began their tour. When he faced the full Sri Lanka team in May he scored an excellent 76 in tough conditions. However, the really interesting selections are those players who haven’t appeared for the Lions before. Borthwick has moved ahead of Adil Rashid as a legspinning allrounder after taking 19 wickets at 30.57 in the County Championship along with scoring 348 runs at 38.66.Hales has impressed at the top of the order for Nottinghamshire and has made 592 runs in the Championship, including a career-best 184 along with 214 runs in the CB40 and 409 in the Friends Life t20 at a strike-rate of 149.81. The other new faces in the squads are Joe Root, the 20-year-old Yorkshire batsman, an interesting choice as he has yet to score a first-class hundred, and pace bowlers Jack Brooks and Stuart Meaker from Northamptonshire and Surrey respectively.Stokes, meanwhile, may already have played for England this season if it hadn’t been for an untimely broken finger after he began the summer in fine form. Overall he has 609 Championship runs included three hundreds – one a career-best 185 – and has chipped in with 17 wickets. It isn’t just fresh faces who make up the squads, however, with Ravi Bopara included in both parties and Steven Finn for the three one-day matches along with Warwickshire allrounder Chris Woakes who has played ODI and Twenty20 cricket for England. The four-day match takes place at Scarborough from August 2-5 with the three one-day games on August 12, 14, and 16 at New Road and Wantage Road.Four-day squad James Taylor (capt), Jonny Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Scott Borthwick, Jack Brooks, Jade Dernbach, Alex Hales, James Harris, Craig Kieswetter, Stuart Meaker, Samit Patel, Joe Root.One-day squad James Taylor (capt), Jonny Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Scott Borthwick, Danny Briggs, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, James Harris, Stuart Meaker, Chris Nash, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.
