Kortney Hause keen to leave Aston Villa

Kortney Hause is hoping to leave Aston Villa this summer, according to a report from The Daily Mail.

The lowdown

The 26-year-old was apparently set to secure a move to Watford in January before it fell through.

That would have brought an end to a spell at Villa which officially started in July 2019, when he made a £3m move from local rivals Wolves following a successful loan spell.

The centre-back has made 55 appearances for the club but has been on the sidelines since March, when he sustained an abdominal injury.

Hause’s £80,000-per-week contract runs until the summer of 2025 and he is now valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The Daily Mail journalists Simon Jones and Lee Davey have reported that Hause is ‘keen for a fresh start’ over the summer.

The Villa centre-back has ‘struggled for gametime’ under Gerrard and wants to play more regularly elsewhere.

The verdict

This news isn’t particularly surprising, as Gerrard was snubbing Hause even before the 26-year-old picked up his injury.

The defender had been an unused substitute in five consecutive games and hadn’t started since the 2-1 defeat at Brentford in early January, when Tyrone Mings was suspended. Tellingly, just under a third of Hause’s 575 minutes of playing time this season came in the first two rounds of the Carabao Cup.

Nonetheless, there are no doubt some Villa supporters who will be sad to see him go. Journalist Patrick Rowe has described him as an ‘assured’ defender who ‘dominates’ players physically and possesses plenty of ‘pace’.

Alas, it now seems as if that pace will be put to good use by somebody other than Villa by the start of next season.

Spurs: Conte must axe Moura v Liverpool

The race for the top four in the Premier League is heating up heading into the final few matches of the 2021/22 season but for Tottenham Hotspur, it doesn’t get trickier than this evening.

Antonio Conte’s side travel to Merseyside to face an in-form and title-chasing Liverpool team at Anfield, who too are in need of points to keep the pressure on Manchester City, who were knocked out of the Champions League in agonising fashion in midweek.

Last weekend, Spurs bolstered their claims for European football next season with a resounding 3-1 victory over a heavily-rotated Leicester City side; their fifth win in seven.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Just like Brendan Rodgers, the Italian head coach also tinkered with his lineup but only slightly, with Lucas Moura coming in for Dejan Kulusevski in the attack.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Brazilian winger was withdrawn for the Sweden international with the Lilywhites only holding a 1-0 lead, and Kulusevski quickly made his presence known by providing two assists for Heung-min Son to net a brace.

Moura has struggled for form and has lost his place in the starting XI to Kulusevski, so that change is ought to be one that Conte makes for this encounter.

Across 31 league appearances, the former Paris Saint-Germain ace has delivered only two goals and five assists – by comparison, the Juventus loanee has already usurped that with three goals and eight assists in only 14 games, via WhoScored.

Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the 29-year-old winger has previously been described as a “nightmare” to train against by team-mate Eric Dier, but we’ve seen anything but that from Moura in 2022, with his last league goal coming back in December.

Moura has also provided two assists since Boxing Day, despite only failing to make two appearances in that time.

Furthermore, Kulusevski is clear for creating chances, even if they do not get converted into a goal – his average of 1.6 key passes per game eclipses Moura by 0.7.

Therefore, it should be a no-brainer for Conte to make the ruthless call to axe Moura from the starting XI up against Liverpool. If there’s any game where he’ll go missing, it’s certainly this one. He is just not good enough to start for Tottenham.

West Ham insider breaks big Rice twist

A club insider, sharing news within the last 48 hours, has now broken one big twist in the ongoing saga of West Ham United star Declan Rice’s future.

The Lowdown: Rice eyeing exit?

Reports over the past few months have suggested, after a lack-lustre January window and falling away in the top-four race, that Rice is open to leaving West Ham this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Various sources have claimed that he could leave in 2022, starting with The Telegraph, who stated in February that the manager David Moyes and GSB ‘face a battle’ to keep the England star this summer.

Since then, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Rice is ‘more open than ever’ to quitting Rush Green, with 90min reporter Scott Saunders going one step further and claiming he is ‘ready to leave this year’.

However, sharing a major twist, insider Claret & Hugh have now provided some good news for Irons supporters.

The Latest: C&H share Rice twist…

According to their sources, after ‘ongoing talks’ between the club, Rice and his agent/father, the 22-year-old has informed West Ham outright that he has no intention to hand in a transfer request and is focused on London Stadium life for the next 12 months ‘minimum’.

C&H go on to state that the Hammers have ‘zero concerns’ over his commitment as the summer window approaches.

However, there is a consensus that, if Rice can’t win anything in east London, he could look to move on next summer instead.

The Verdict: Big 2022/2023 ahead…

News of the England star’s commitment for next year at least comes as good news for West Ham, but going by this update, the 2022/23 season could be absolutely huge.

Much may well depend on GSB backing Moyes in the summer market and showing Rice that the club are indeed serious about building on their unprecedented success over the last two years.

It is believed that the Scotsman will have a £150m kitty at his disposal as West Ham potentially aim to make statements.

Pundit discusses ‘trouble’ for Celtic

Former Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes introducing VAR midway through next season could have a negative impact on Celtic and others.

The Lowdown: SPL set for VAR

The Scottish Premiership is yet to experience VAR, instead watching the much-discussed technology being used from afar across Europe’s top leagues.

It has now been confirmed that it will be used in the SPL from the middle of next season onwards, however, following a one-sided vote on the matter.

VAR will come into play after the 2022 World Cup, which takes place between November 21st and December 18th.

The Latest: Kenny bemoans decision

Someone who doesn’t like the idea of the change halfway through the campaign is Kenny, who told Football Insider that it could benefit some teams more than others come next May:

“They are asking for trouble with this. It should start at the start of next season or the start of the season after, you can’t start it halfway through a season.

“There will be decisions they get wrong in the first half of the season which could cost teams, then in the second half of the season, you get a different result.

“That could decide relegation or whoever wins the league. It’s wrong, I don’t think it’s right at all. It will lead to so many debates and what-ifs. It needs to come in at the start of a season.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-3/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Could backfire hugely

It is a strange decision to implement VAR in the middle of a season, seemingly asking for trouble, in terms of some teams feeling hard done by compared to others.

Celtic could be robbed by a key decision before the World Cup takes place, for example, while Rangers could then benefit from the same incident taking place after Christmas.

It would surely have made more sense to bring in VAR at the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign, although if all clubs are happy with this situation, they will have to accept that some may profit more than others over the course of the season.

Brittle Pakistan need to show fight

Match facts

August 6, 2010, Edgbaston
Start time 11.00 (1000GMT)No mistakes: England’s catching was a feature of their impressive performance at Trent Bridge•Getty Images

Big picture

England couldn’t really have hoped for a better start to the series after their massive 354-run victory at Trent Bridge, but one thing that Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower have become good at is keeping the players’ feet firmly on the ground. All logic would suggest the gap between the teams is so vast that a turnaround is unthinkable, yet logic tends to go out the window when Pakistan are involved. They have already shown their ability to bounce back from defeat when they levelled the series against Australia and any side with the fast-bowling skills of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul can never be underestimated. That trio caused England a heap of problems at Trent Bridge, but at crucial times they were let down in the field and were given precious little back-up by Danish Kaneria, who suffered a shocking match.Kaneria has been shipped back to county cricket (although can’t play for Essex until he is re-registered) and the chief villain in the field – wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal – has been replaced by the uncapped Zulqarnain Haider but Pakistan’s major problem is their batting. Despite the insistence of Salman Butt that he would back youth it was only a matter of time before an SOS went out for reinforcements and Mohammad Yousuf has duly been drafted into the squad. After a race against time to reach Birmingham, Yousuf had been considered for a comeback in the second Test but ruled himself out through tiredness, leaving the way open for a recall for Yasir Hameed. It is debatable whether one man who has barely played cricket of late – regardless of his undoubted class – could have revived Pakistan on his own, and it may even have been a backward step for the team, as Yousuf’s return could have revived memories of the terrible Australia tour which began Pakistan’s latest crisis.England are in bullish mood, and rightly so, with little concern over which players they face this week. The bowling was impressive in the opening match – led by James Anderson’s career-best 11 wickets – while Eoin Morgan and Matt Prior delivered fine centuries under pressure. There are concerns over Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen, who both need runs, but they are minor problems compared to Pakistan’s.

Form guide (last five completed matches)

Pakistan LWLLL

Watch out for…

Most of the talk surrounding England’s batting hasn’t been about the century-makers, but rather Kevin Pietersen’s form. Yet, Alastair Cook shouldn’t escape the spotlight after three disappointing Tests this season. He may have been captain five months ago, but the race for England batting spots is so intense that nobody can afford a barren run. In fairness it was a tough Test for top-order batsmen at Trent Bridge, but the concern was the ease with which Cook was predictably worked over by Asif and Amir. He showed in South Africa that he can combat top-quality pace bowling but he’s at that stage again where he needs a few runs.Mohammad Asif had the ball on a string for most of the first Test until England pulled away in the second innings. His languid, almost lazy run-up, doesn’t hint at the threat he poses once he lets the ball go and even though he rarely exceeds 80mph his late movement can leave batsmen in knots. It is, therefore, soul-destroying to see chances go begging and then watch his own batsmen throw their wickets away. But Asif will keep running in and he, along with Amir, remain Pakistan’s best chance of getting back onto the series

Team news

Barring late injuries England won’t make any changes, especially after such a comprehensive victory. Graeme Swann should expect some more work in this Test, but he has said he won’t mind another Test standing at second slip.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Eoin Morgan, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven FinnYousuf made it to Birmingham in time but thanks to his jet-lag and general lack of match practice, Umar Amin keeps his place, although there may be a temptation to move Shoaib Malik up the order. Kamran Akmal has been dropped, with his deputy Zulqarnain Haider coming in to make his Test debut, while offspinner Saeed Ajmal will replace Kaneria and will have a vital role in easing the workload on the quick bowlers.Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt (capt), 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Umar Amin, 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Zulqarnain Haider (wk), 8 Mohammad Amir, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Asif

Pitch and conditions

There has been some rain around Birmingham in the build-up to the Test and the forecast suggests further showers can be expected at various stages during the game. Cloudy skies will keep the swing bowlers happy and Stuart Broad recently showed what was on offer in the surface with 8 for 52 playing for Nottinghamshire against Warwickshire. However, if batsmen get in at Edgbaston runs can also flow quickly. It should be another fast-moving game.

Stats and Trivia

  • The first Test provided only the third occasion in history when all the top scores came from No. 6 and below in the order.
  • England and Pakistan have met six times at Edgbaston and the visitors have never won here. The last occasion was in 1992 in what became a rain-ruined and bat-dominated draw.
  • James Anderson, fresh from his 11-wicket haul, will play his 50th Test.

Quotes

“We all go through it, you’re not human if you don’t go through a poor run of form at some time, but players of the quality of KP always come back and he will.”
“Everybody knows that this is the type of show that has been coming out of Pakistan previously as well as recently. This is something that can change.”

Tim Nielsen reveals suspicious approaches

Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has joined four of his players in revealing he reported suspicious approaches while on tour to the team’s manager

Cricinfo staff05-Sep-2010Tim Nielsen, the Australia coach, has joined four of his players in revealing he reported suspicious approaches while on tour to the team’s manager. Last week Shane Watson and Brad Haddin confirmed they had told of invitations from an illegal bookmaker while Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson were also targeted in England last year.Nielsen said that being a coach he received lots of innocent requests, but some people were asking for information for “sinister reasons”. ”I’ve spoken to our manager once or twice about things that have happened, but nothing has ever come of them,” Nielsen told the Sun-Herald.”You meet so many people, go to so many functions and events on the road and it’s hard to differentiate between what’s good and what’s a potential problem. People love the idea of talking to a player or the coach and getting information behind the scenes.”The incidents were highlighted following the events involving Pakistan at Lord’s in the fourth Test against England last week. Suspicion has also fallen on Australia’s win at the SCG in January and Nielsen has spent time looking back at the game.”It’s almost like we’ve been naive to it,” he said. ”I’m wondering now about a whole lot of things – why do people do it? How will the game survive? How can we ensure that people feel they still have a great team to follow? People are going to question results in all games, but especially against Pakistan.”In the Sydney Test no one had given a moment’s thought about it being given up or fixed. The guys felt it was some of the hardest Test cricket they’d ever played.”Lee’s manager Neil Maxwell was unhappy the bowler’s name was revealed last week. “I don’t think there is an immediate concern [for their safety] but I do believe if I was a player I’d be reluctant to report these things if my name is going to be thrust forward whenever an incident rears its head,” Maxwell said. “They have to have the protective process as well.”
