England survive ten Doeschate brilliance

England 296 for 4 (Strauss 88, Trott 62) beat Netherlands 292 for 6 (ten Doeschate 119*, Cooper 47) by six wickets

Ryan ten Doeschate produced a scintillating 119 from 110 balls, and followed up with the brilliant bowling figures of 2 for 47 in ten overs, to give England one of the biggest frights of their international lives. However, his very best efforts were not quite enough to propel the Netherlands to an incredible victory in their World Cup opener at Nagpur.Faced with a massive target of 293, and humiliation on an even greater scale than they suffered at Lord’s two years ago, England responded with a determined batting performance under the floodlights, and thanks to composed half-centuries from Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott, they eventually reached safety with six wickets and eight balls to spare. However, the final margin of victory did no justice to the journey they were forced to undertake. Had England stumbled, it would surely have gone down as the greatest upset in World Cup history. The final overs were fraught with possibility, as England battled with a run-rate that barely dipped below seven an over, against a pumped-up team of performers who could mainline their adrenalin straight from that opening fixture of the World Twenty20. With 69 needed from the final ten overs, Trott was exquisitely stumped off a leg-side wide by Wesley Barresi, who had earlier launched the Dutch innings with a sparky cameo of 29 from 25 balls, and when the in-form Ian Bell was bowled middle stump by the final ball of ten Doeschate’s spell, Nagpur really was living up to its reputation as the City of Orange. That dismissal left England’s fate in the hands of Paul Collingwood, who has barely been able to buy an international run all winter, and Ravi Bopara, whose inclusion at the expense of the second spinner Michael Yardy contributed to their problems in the field, but for which he ultimately atoned with a vital 30 not out from 20 balls, including a soothing six over long-off from the first ball off the 49th over – the first of England’s innings. It was Collingwood who proved the key, however. He was England’s captain when they lost in 2009, and ten years earlier he had also been on the receiving end of a NatWest Trophy beating while playing for Durham in Amstelveen. The threat of a triple dose of humiliation compelled him to rediscover his fighting spirit, and he restored faith in both himself and his team with an unbeaten 30 from 23.It was all extraordinarily fraught. Whereas previous shocks have revolved around batting collapses in helpful conditions – think Ireland in Jamaica four years ago, or West Indies against Kenya in 1996 – this performance was all about the weight of runs that the derided Dutchmen were able to pile onto England’s shoulders. With Associate cricket in the spotlight like never before, following the decision to reduce the 2015 World Cup to 10 teams, and in light of the recent capitulations by Canada and Kenya in Group A, this was a performance that showed the sport’s second tier in the best and most timely light imaginable.ten Doeschate’s prowess in limited-overs cricket is hardly a secret – he averaged 54 in the CB40 last season, and weighed in with nine wickets, as Essex advanced to the semi-finals – but England had no answers to his watertight technique and a shot selection that started out composed before exploding in the closing overs with 52 runs coming from his last 26 deliveries. He came to the crease in the 12th over and though he took 12 balls to get off the mark, the value in gauging the pace of the wicket paid off handsomely. All told, ten Doeschate struck nine fours and three sixes in a 110-ball stay, the first of which came off a gentle full-toss from Kevin Pietersen, whose two overs were dispatched for 19 and highlighted England’s folly in omitting Yardy – Bopara’s medium-pace was not called upon. Swann, on his return to the team following the birth of his son Wilfred, was the pick of England’s bowlers with 2 for 35 in ten tidy overs, while Stuart Broad was menacing if a touch expensive in his first full international since the Adelaide Test in December. But ten Doeschate treated the rest of England’s attack with disdain, as he powered through to his fourth and highest century in 28 appearances for the Netherlands. After calling for the Powerplay in the 43rd over, ten Doeschate lost his fifth-wicket partner Tom de Grooth, the hero of Lord’s 2009, who was bowled by a Broad yorker for 28. But undeterred, he picked off consecutive boundaries from Tim Bresnan to move through the nineties, before reaching his first World Cup hundred from 98 balls and in remarkable fashion, as a sharp single to short fine leg turned into five overthrows when Trott’s shy ricocheted off the stumps and away to the ropes. On a night that belonged to the Dutchmen in spite of the final result, the nadir of England’s performance was reached in the final six overs of their bowling effort. Only last summer, England’s attack was touted as their likeliest route to World Cup glory, given how intricately each member of the attack knew their roles, and how quickly they were able to react to changing circumstances. However, the closing overs were a total shambles that would have disgraced a club side, given the breadth and variety of the errors that were committed.A foretaste of the chaos came in Swann’s seventh over, when ten Doeschate, on 47, launched a drive into no-man’s land behind the bowler’s arm, where James Anderson and Kevin Pietersen converged from mid-off and mid-on respectively, but stopped dead as the ball plugged harmlessly between them.Anderson’s day then went from bad to worse when he returned to the attack in the 46th over. His attempt at blockhole bowling resulted in two awful waist-high full-tosses, the second of which swung away down the leg side for four. Both were called as no-balls, and Anderson was very fortunate not to be withdrawn from the attack by the umpires. Or not as it happens, because the Dutch captain Peter Borren was delighted he remained. He belted three consecutive boundaries in a listless ninth over, to finish unbeaten on 35 from 24 balls.England’s embarrassment didn’t end there. Though Broad showed some fight to end ten Doeschate’s stay via a catch in the deep in the 49th over, he was denied the wicket of Borren in the same over when Collingwood at midwicket failed to take his required position inside the fielding circle. A no-ball was signalled, Borren was recalled, and there was still time for one more howler, as Swann shelled a sitter at third man to reprieve Mudassar Bukhari.Netherlands’ final total of 292 for 6 was their highest against a full-member nation, and the second highest by any Associate, beating the 230 they scored against England on this very day 15 years ago, at the 1996 World Cup. The hero that day was the 18-year-old Bas Zuiderent, who was the only Dutchman to miss out this time around, as he made 1 from 10 balls before becoming Swann’s second victim. It was scant consolation for England on a day that they could not allow to get any worse. The new opening pairing of Strauss and Pietersen went some way towards atoning for England’s earlier errors with a 105-run stand in 17.4 overs. They started with clear intent as Strauss snaffled three fours in the first over, from Mudassar Bukhari – two clips off the toes and a fortuitous under-edged cut past off stump, en route to 88 from 83 balls, while Pietersen’s first shot was a sweetly timed drive to a Berend Westdijk outswinger. On a slow deck, Pietersen’s instinct was to advance onto the front foot at every opportunity, and his timing seemed in fine fettle even though he kept picking out the fielders in a well-drilled Netherlands outfit. Strauss meanwhile hung back in his crease and took advantage of the Dutch inexperience to nudge and pull eight of his first nine boundaries behind square on the leg-side.However, as the hardness went out of the new ball and Barresi came up to the stumps to restrict Pietersen’s footwork, his returns tailed off appreciably. Having scored 29 from his first 31 balls, he made just 10 from his next 30, before Pieter Seelaar added his name to the list of left-arm spinners to have captured one of the more notable scalps in world cricket. A tempting delivery was tossed up outside off stump, and Pietersen failed to get his feet to the pitch as he poked an uppish drive to short cover. In the end humiliation was avoided, and given the lop-sided format of the World Cup, England have already made a significant stride towards the quarter-finals. But with the in-form Indians looming in Bangalore on Sunday, there is no room for another performance this poor. The world is watching and the likes of Virender Sehwag won’t be losing sleep.

PCB bars players from using Facebook and Twitter

The PCB has barred its contracted players from using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter in the aftermath of the Zulqarnain Haider controversy

The PCB has barred its contracted players from using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter during series in the aftermath of the Zulqarnain Haider controversy. The Pakistan wicketkeeper fled the UAE, where his team was involved in a series against South Africa, to seek asylum in the UK last month and, though largely untraceable, kept the public informed of his news through updates on his Facebook page.”The measure is for the players’ safety. They are prone to danger if the wrong person gets access to their information, whereabouts and so on,” team manager Intikhab Alam was quoted as saying by Pakistan’s . “Therefore, the PCB has finalised the policy and banned the use of all social networking websites during ongoing series, while also advising them to keep their activity minimum when they are not playing.”The PCB said the measure had been incorporated in its revised code of conduct for players. “There is a clause in their contracts which states clearly that they can’t use these social network sites or discuss cricket issues while under contract. It is for their own good, so that they don’t get entangled into controversies.”The board also threatened legal action against those putting up fake accounts of players on social networking websites. “There are many accounts that are not operated by the players,” the PCB’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi said. “Fake ones operated by other people are a hazard. These people are liable to face charges of cyber crime and fraud. So my advice to them is to be careful, otherwise they can be prosecuted.”Concern over the use of such websites by players has not been confined to the PCB. Kevin Pietersen’s outburst on Twitter over his exclusion from the limited-overs side in August resulted in the ECB introducing specific regulations for micro-blogging. And Allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas was banned by the ECB for two weeks following his foul-mouthed messages against national selector Geoff Miller.

Rangers must drop Allan McGregor

Rangers failed to make the most of their rivals slipping up on Sunday as Gio van Bronckhorst’s Gers side were held to a 2-2 draw by Motherwell in the Premiership.

Celtic failed to win earlier in the day and that gave Gio van Bronckhorst’s side a chance to close the gap to one point with a win at Ibrox.

Instead, they let a two-goal lead slip and came away with a draw. An own goal from Bevis Mugabi and a fine strike from Fashion Sakala put Rangers in what appeared to be a comfortable position, but the away side fought back to claim a point in Glasgow.

Liability

One player who cost the Gers on the day was Allan McGregor as he conceded two goals from three shots, with the second strike somehow squeezing past him at the near post.

This is not the first time the £13k-per-week liability has cost Rangers points this season, with SofaScore judging him to have made one error leading to a shot and three errors directly leading to goals – a statistic that comes from weak parries or passes resulting in goals.

The stat does not take into account him letting in shots that he should be expected to save, although they are hard to quantify without the expected goals statistic available.

Charlie Nicholas blasted the veteran earlier this year and explained that he was surprised when the club opted against signing a new shot-stopper to replace him. He said:

“I really expected Rangers to sign another goalkeeper and he would get the gloves. McGregor has made too many mistakes this season and that is why I think it has been a season too far.

“He has been nowhere near close to good enough over the course of the campaign. McGregor hasn’t been up to his usual standards.”

Rangers cannot afford to keep allowing the 40-year-old to cost them vital points in the Premiership as they chase Celtic for the title this season. Therefore, van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe him from the team in their clash against St. Johnstone this week.

Jon McLaughlin should be given the opportunity to show that he can be more reliable as the number one option during the run-in. The ex-Sunderland shot-stopper will surely be desperate for a chance to prove himself after watching his teammate’s fumbles in recent weeks and the Dutch head coach should now axe McGregor and give him a go in the starting XI.

Rangers beast set for new contract

A key Rangers update has emerged on Ibrox shot-stopper Jon McLaughlin, regarding his future at the club…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Record, the Gers are close to agreeing a new contract with the goalkeeper as they look to avoid losing him for nothing at the end of the campaign.

The report does not claim how long the extension will be, but a deal is seemingly on the verge of being completed for him to remain in Glasgow.

Delight

Rangers fans will surely be delighted by this news as McLaughlin is a reliable operator who is a useful player to have in the squad. He has not let the club down whenever he has played this season and could remain as a dependable number two next term.

The 34-year-old has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.82 in the Premiership in the current campaign, saving 64% of the shots against him and making one penalty save from the sole spot-kick he has faced. This shows that he is a solid player at this level who is able to step in and perform when needed.

Allan McGregor’s contract at Ibrox expires in the summer and it remains to be seen whether or not the veteran, who turns 40 next week, is willing to extend his career. This means that pinning down the current number two to fresh terms could help to keep some continuity in the ranks if the ex-Hull stopper moves on, rather than leaving Rangers in the lurch between the sticks come the summer.

The Gers have been linked with a swoop for Benjamin Siegrist of Dundee United and the shot-stopper could come in to compete with McLaughlin. This could create a level of competition similar to what Van Bronckhorst currently has with his two goalkeepers at Ibrox this term, with both players battling for the number one jersey, which is why this update will come as a big boost for the head coach.

Therefore, fans will surely be delighted with this news, as it means that Rangers could be set to have a strong goalkeeping department next season instead of losing both of their first-choice ‘keepers and being left scrambling around to bring in two new additions. The Gers now need to ensure that they can get a deal over the line for Siegrist, or an alternative target, if McGregor decides to hang up the gloves in the summer.

AND in other news, Van Bronckhorst can jettison Rangers liability in swoop for “phenomenal” 18y/o with a “big future”…

AVFC must complete Neil transfer

Aston Villa have not been shy when it comes to identifying and signing players that they feel will improve their side, either as immediate first-team figures such as Danny Ings or young prospects that could work their way into becoming regular senior players in the future such as Louie Barry and Kerr Smith.

With a few days left until deadline day arrives, one fairly young player that Villa have been linked with that could come in and start making a claim to become a regular figure in Steven Gerrard’s team is Sunderland’s 20-year-old midfielder Dan Neil.

As a product of the Wearside club’s youth system, the midfielder has made a total of 42 appearances for Lee Johnson’s first team across all competitions, chipping in with three goals and eight assists along the way.

This season has seen the youngster play in all but one of Sunderland’s league games, highlighting how critical he is to the team.

As well as his goals and assists from midfield, Neil’s overall performances have also been note-worthy with WhoScored listing the Englishman as the fifth-highest rated Sunderland player to have played more than one league game so far this season with a rating of 6.86/10.

Despite it still being early days in his playing career, the Sunderland maestro has already been likened to a young version of Premier League legend Michael Carrick by talkSPORT commentator Ian Danter, which is a massive compliment given how highly regarded the former Manchester United midfielder is.

With that in mind, the opportunity to unearth the next Carrick at Villa should be a very exciting prospect for Gerrard and therefore persuade the Midlands club to launch a move to sign the Sunderland starlet, who has been labelled as a “diamond” by Phil Parkinson in the past.

Given how important he is to Johnson’s side, who are pushing for promotion back to the Championship, Villa may struggle getting them to agree a deal for Neil to leave before the end of the month.

However, with the lure of potentially playing in the Premier League with a big club like Villa under the management of one of the best midfield players of all time, this could be a very tempting next step for the Sunderland star should he feel like he’s ready to start a new chapter in his career.

BCCI receives two bids for Indian team sponsor

In the end, only two players, Sahara India Pariwar and Bharti Airtel, submitted bids for the right to sponsor the Indian team.

Nagraj Gollapudi and Tariq Engineer29-May-2010In the end, only two players, Sahara Group and Bharti Airtel, submitted bids for the right to sponsor the Indian team. Both Sahara, the existing sponsors, and Airtel bought the tender document at the last possible minute before the submission deadline, and Cricinfo has learnt both companies have submitted the mandatory Rs 50 crore (US$10.7 million) deposit required by the BCCI.The Indian board issued the tender on Monday inviting companies to bid for the rights, whose tenure is three-and-a-half years beginning July 1, 2010. Other companies in the fray included the ADA Group (ADAG), consumer electronics major Videocon, Delhi-based Monnet-Ispat, sports broadcaster Nimbus, which owns the rights to matches played in India, and advertising firm Percept.A source close to Nimbus said the broadcaster was approached by ADAG on Saturday morning, as its top brass was reluctant to commit as much as Rs 400 crore (US$ 85.6m) on its own. Nimbus, meanwhile, was trying to put together a consortium to bid for the rights, but was unable to pull it off due to the short time-span – less than a week – between the date the tender was released and the date the bids were submitted. “They released the tender on Monday and all the bids need to go in by Saturday, which is just about four working days by the time the tender was in hand. That is not very easy to work out when you are trying to get people to commit to Rs 400 crore.”It was reported widely that the BCCI was against consortiums bidding for the rights, but one of the interested players, who was among the first to pick the document, said that the board never had any issues there. “They had sent a clarification stating they did not want any marketing agencies to be part [of the consortium].”The BCCI has set a base price of Rs 2.5 crore per match for a three-and-a-half year period, during which India will be playing between 144 and 167 matches, depending on how far the team progresses in the ICC tournaments. The current price represents a 16% discount from the tender the board issued late last year, which had a base price of Rs 3 crore per match, and failed to attract a single bid. As a stop gap measure, the Sahara Group agreed to extend its sponsorship of the Indian team for a further six months, a period that ends on June 30.The lack of interest in the tender six months ago and the subsequent lowering of the base price represents “the impact of the IPL,” according to Hiren Pandit, Managing Partner-Entertainment, Sports and Partnerships at Group M, a prominent media buying agency. Pandit believes the IPL gives firms an alternative avenue to get involved with cricket, thereby reducing the exclusiveness of the Indian team. After winning the bid for the Pune IPL franchise, Sahara chairman Subrata Roy had said the company would re-evaluate its sponsorship of the Indian team. Subsequently, when contacted by Cricinfo, the company declined to comment to on whether it would be bidding this time around. The Sahara Group had paid roughly Rs 400 crore in 2005 for the right to sponsor the Indian team for four years. At least one prospective bidder, who bought the bid document, thought the current base price was still too high. “Anyone who bags the rights will have to spend on an average 125 crore annually only on this. That is a huge amount of money.”Shailendra Singh, joint managing director, Percept Limited, which had reportedly purchased the bid document for a client, says the Indian team is still the best cricket brand around. “From a value perspective, the sport of cricket stands unparalleled as a property for sponsors today,” he said. “For any fan, especially in India, the national team is the ultimate. People follow IPL because you have the cricketers from the Indian team playing, they are the main attraction. Hence this in no way reduces the importance or following of Team India. Team India will be one of the best cricket properties always.”The BCCI will announce the winning bid after holding its marketing committee meeting in Mumbai on Monday.

Rain rules at Trent Bridge

Kent’s Clydesdale Bank 40 game against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge was ruined by inclement weather

Cricinfo staff08-May-2010Kent’s Clydesdale Bank 40 game against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge was ruined by inclement weather, with only six overs bowled before the match was called off entirely after initially being reduced to a 10-over contest. Robert Key put the Nottinghamshire bowling attack to the sword, slamming three sixes and five fours in an 18-ball 44 to add 73 for the first wicket with Joe Denly in five overs, but after Steven Mullaney struck twice in his solitary over the rain returned to end all hopes of completing a game.
