Leeds star Bamford could make England debut

Leeds United star Patrick Bamford could reportedly make his England debut on Sunday afternoon, a hugely exciting moment for the once journeyman striker.

The Lowdown: Bamford transformation complete

The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the Whites’ key men in the Marcelo Bielsa era, scoring 17 goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League last season and coming a long way from an endless spell of loans at Chelsea.

Bamford’s incredible rise has been rewarded with an England call-up, but he didn’t feature in the Three Lions’ 4-0 win away to Hungary on Thursday night.

The Latest: Striker set for debut

According to The Daily Mail, the Leeds man will likely feature in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier at home to Andorra.

Gareth Southgate could potentially ring the changes, allowing Bamford to win the first of what is hopefully many caps for his country.

The Verdict: Richly deserved

Bamford was unfortunate to miss out on a place in England’s Euro 2020 squad, but his call-up was fully deserved after such an impressive 12 months or so, during which time he has been described as ‘exceptional’ by Jurgen Klopp.

The striker hasn’t always been the most popular player – some Leeds fans used to be critical of him – but he has silenced the doubters and will be desperate to shine against Andorra.

Whites supporters everywhere will no doubt be willing him on, as he looks to strengthen his hopes of playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

In other news, Leeds have been tipped to sign a player in January – find out who it is here.

Malik heroics help Punjab extend winning run

Captain Shoaib Malik continued his good form from the first match with both bat and ball, as Punjab Stallions posted their second win on the trot

Shoaib Malik continued his solid form with both bat and ball, as he led the Punjab Stallions to their second win in a row over the NWFP Panthers. Far from the fireworks of yesterday’s spectacular last-ball thriller, this was a slow-burner: an NWFP side weakened by the absence of captain Umar Gul and Younis Khan pushed hard, their challenge fell away over the last ten overs as Punjab’s spinners, with Malik to the fore, applied a mid-innings choke.Malik had first played his part with the bat. Having been put in by NWFP, Punjab were off to the worst possible start, losing Azhar Ali early. Salman Butt and Nasir Jamshed may have been one of the few bright spots for Pakistan this year, but they were soon gone to, on a sluggish pitch. That left Punjab 36 for 3 and Malik with a headache. But in his typically unruffled way, Malik went about looking to put some respectability to the total. Good running helped as a number of singles and doubles were picked up and some support emerged in the shape of Umar Akmal, the tyro younger brother of Kamran. The pair steadied matters with an 86-run partnership but the dismissal of both in quick succession, and Kamran Akmal to boot, left Punjab pretty much where they had started – in some strife. Thereafter, Mansoor Amjad, Abdur Rehman and the tail scraped and scratched their way to ensuring a defendable total. Samiullah Khan Niazi and Shakeel-ur-Rehman, with three wickets apiece, made sure it wouldn’t be easy. The start to the NWFP innings was similar, as Adnan Raees was caught behind off the wiry, impressive and pacy Mohammad Talha. Yasir Hameed took a cue from Malik. Leading NWFP in Gul’s absence, the former Pakistan opener got down to some serious graft.Though not timing the ball fluently, or finding gaps readily – a blip that has lately emerged – Hameed hung around. Rafatullah Mohmand chanced his arm at the other end and kept up the rate and at times in their partnership, the total appeared a doddle. But Malik, helped by Rehman, then made his second vital impact on this match. Junaid Zia had already sent back Mohmand when Malik trapped the impressive Khurram Shehzad and almost immediately after, beat Hameed with a beautifully looped delivery. Thereafter the chase was up, the spirit gone.Rehman bowled a wonderfully restrictive spell of left-arm spin, supporting Malik. Amjad came on late in the show, getting appreciable turn and bounce, and further stifling the rate. During this choke, NWFP crashed from 142 for 3 to 183 for 9, including three panic-struck run-outs. They went down fighting at least, with Mohammad Aslam unbeaten on 24. Talha came back for another quick, yorker-ridden spell at the end, to finish with two wickets and Pakistan’s selection committee would’ve taken note. Malik, it was however, who deservedly received the Man-of-the-Match award.

Ball drops huge Kane to City verdict amid £127.3m bid talk

Michael Ball insists that Harry Kane will end up at Manchester City before the end of the transfer window.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker has been at the centre of a transfer saga throughout the summer.

City are reported to be heavily interested in a deal to bring him to the Etihad Stadium and noted transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has claimed that a new bid worth €150m (£127.3m) is being prepared by the Premier League champions.

The Times, by comparison, has reported that there is no direct dialogue between the two clubs over a deal to sign Kane this summer, and that he may well end up remaining at Spurs for another season.

Still, Ball believes that a deal will get done, with City having the money required to sign him, even after signing Jack Grealish for a British-record £100m.

Kane was left out of the Spurs squad to face City on Sunday but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side managed to win the game 1-0, thanks to a goal from Son Heung-Min.

Asked if he expected Kane to join City, Ball told Football FanCast: “I think so.

“To be honest, in the summer, I didn’t think they’d be able to afford Jack and Kane this summer but with Pep coming out strongly about the deal for Jack Grealish, probably means that they have got the money in the pot to bring Harry Kane to the football club.”

Lahore Badshahs secure maiden win

The contest between the Lahore Badshahs and the Ahmedabad Rockets was one of those rare occasions when the bowlers dominated a Twenty20 match

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera in Ahmedabad19-Oct-2008
Scorecard
The contest between the Lahore Badshahs and the Ahmedabad Rockets was one of those rare occasions when the bowlers dominated a Twenty20 match. Lahore were restricted to 136 but their bowlers put in a disciplined performance and shot out Ahmedabad Rockets for 105 to clinch their first win of the tournament.Lahore went into the game without Inzamam-ul-Haq, who suffered from back pain, and were led by Azhar Mahmood. Their batsmen failed once again, setting a target that was neither here nor there, but their bowlers rose to the occasion. It was Sami and Azhar Mahmood who began the defense. Ryan Campbell, who had played an explosive innings in Ahmedabad’s last game, failed to connect with a slog and was bowled in the first over. Mahmood followed up with a low offcutter that breached Damien Martyn’s defences.Ahmedabad scored only 29 off the first six overs, their best batsmen were gone and, despite strong support from a vocal home crowd, the chase was always going to be tough. Naved-ul-Hasan struck with his first ball when Murray Goodwin flashed straight to point and more trouble awaited Ahmedabad in form of Saqlain Mushtaq.Saqlain’s doosra isn’t a secret anymore but tonight he produced another unique delivery. With his palm facing midwicket – as opposed to the off side when he bowls the conventional offbreak or doosra to a right hander – Saqlain rolled his fingers over the seam and delivered a ball that went straight through, and quickly at that. S Sriram was lbw while attempting a reverse sweep and Jason Gillespie was bowled. The match ended when Rakesh Patel holed out at deep square leg and Lahore got into a celebratory huddle as fireworks lit up the sky. The crowd trudged back home disappointed after having a great time in the first half of the game when Sumit Kalia, the left-arm spinner, ran through Lahore.Kalia’s only error today was his drop off Imran Nazir in the first over of the game. Everything else clicked seamlessly for him. His success with the ball began in the eighth over with Lahore comfortably placed at 62 for 1. Kalia got Naved-ul-Hasan stumped before striking twice in his next over: he lured Shahid Yousuf into a mis-hit towards long-off and used the arm-ball to trap Imran Nazir lbw for a run-a-ball 25. By the time he finished his spell – 4-0-19-3 – Lahore had lost their early momentum.Naved Latif and Khalid Mahmood tried to regroup but Parvez Aziz restricted the damage by removing both in the 17th over. At the innings break it looked like Ahmedabad’s bowlers had done enough. Unfortunately for them, their batsmen fell 31 runs short of doing enough to secure the victory.

Sachin Tendulkar will not play the five-ODI series in Sri Lanka after sustaining an injury to his left elbow during the third Test in Colombo. S Badrinath, the Tamil Nadu batsman, will be his replacement.”I spoke to Sachin and the team physio [Nitin Patel] this morning and I can confirm that Tendulkar has been ruled out of action for two to three weeks,” Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, told Cricinfo.Tendulkar had jarred his elbow while attempting a catch in the 47th over of Sri Lanka’s first innings on Saturday, and was quickly taken off. An MRI scan revealed a swelling, and Tendulkar didn’t take the field for the rest of the innings. However, he did bat in India’s second innings on Sunday, though two places below his customary No. 4 position. Tendulkar was out for 14, which still leaves him 77 short of surpassing Brian Lara as the leading run-getter in Tests. After missing the Asia Cup in Pakistan due to a groin injury, Tendulkar had been named in the ODI squad for Sri Lanka as well as the Champions Trophy in Pakistan which takes place in September. His last one-day match was the second final of the Commonwealth Bank Series against Australia in Brisbane in March 2008.Badrinath confirmed his call-up to the national team, and will leave for Sri Lanka on Wednesday. “Yes, I got a call to join the team for the Sri Lanka series and I’m leaving day after,” he told Cricinfo. Badrinath said though the Muttiah Muralitharan-Ajantha Mendis spin combination was a testing one, he had the advantage of having faced Murali at the Chennai Super Kings nets during the Indian Premier League earlier this year.”The injury to Tendulkar is sad and it is very hard to step into his shoes,” Badrinath told the . “I am looking forward to the challenge of playing to the best of my ability. I have worked on my strokes, the innovations over the years. I have picked wickets for my club Jolly Rovers in the TNCA first division league with my off spin. Fielding and fitness are always high on my priority list.”The five-match series will be played from August 18-29.

Wednesday dealt Bannan transfer blow

Sheffield Wednesday have been dealt a major blow in their bid to keep Barry Bannan at Hillsborough this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that the Premier League trio of Burnley, Crystal Palace and Watford are all monitoring the situation of the Owls midfielder ahead of a potential swoop in what remains of the summer transfer window.

In comments made earlier this month, the 31-year-old stated his belief that he would still be a Wednesday player beyond transfer deadline day, as well as claiming that he wants to help get the club back to the Championship this season.

Moore will be gutted

While Bannan’s comments about his future may well have been sincere, considering the Scotland international’s age, should a Premier League side firm up their interest in the midfielder with an acceptable offer, it is an extremely difficult scenario to imagine that the 31-year-old would turn down the opportunity to play top flight football.

And, should one of Burnley, Palace or Watford ultimately secure a deal for Bannan, it would undoubtedly leave Darren Moore gutted, as the former Aston Villa man is quite clearly a very important part of the 47-year-old’s Owls side.

Indeed, over his three League One appearances so far this season, the £1.6m-rated club captain has scored one goal, as well as taking an average of 2.3 shots and making one key pass per game.

These returns have seen the man Moore dubbed an “important” player earn a highly impressive average SofaScore match rating of 7.43, ranking him as Wednesday’s second-best performer in the third tier of English football.

Furthermore, Pep Guardiola’s glowing endorsement of the Scottish maestro highlights just how much quality he possesses. After the Owls met Man City in the FA Cup in 2019/20, the Spaniard described him as an “incredible player.”

As such, it is clear that losing the services of Bannan would come as a huge blow to the former West Bromwich Albion and Doncaster Rovers manager, who will undoubtedly be keeping his fingers crossed that none of the interested parties come forward with a decent offer for the £27k-per-week midfielder in the coming days.

Estamos precisando disso.
