Southampton urged to let Ings join Man City

Barry Fry insists that Southampton cannot stand in Danny Ings’ way if Manchester City are legitimately interested in signing the striker in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

Ings has been in exceptional form at times this season, scoring eight Premier League goals.

In his first seven games of the campaign, the 28-year-old scored five goals, and a report from Sky Sports claims that City are interested in signing the forward amid doubts over Sergio Aguero’s future.

Sky have reported that City have identified Ings as a target as they believe Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland would cost over £100m.

Fry, the Director of Football at Peterborough United, believes that Southampton will demand a similar fee for Ings, but he does not believe that the Saints will receive that type of figure.

At the same time, he has hailed Saints’ record in the transfer market, with the club receiving big fees for the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Luke Shaw in recent transfer windows.

He told FFC: “Well, I think because it’s Manchester City, Southampton will ask for £100 million, but they won’t get nowhere near that.

“Southampton have done absolutely amazing in the transfer market when they’ve sold some of their young players, but Ings isn’t young.

“He’s an established player. And, unfortunately, he’s had a few injuries. He’s a great player, he scores great goals, and he works his socks off, no doubt about that. He could contribute to every team in the Premier League.”

Fry, though, is worried that Southampton will stand in Ings’ way and cost him a move to a big Premier League club.

Indeed, he has urged the club to let him go if City do express an interest.

He added: “However, Southampton could ask for more than what Man City is willing to pay. And I hope that doesn’t happen, because he has been a great servant to Southampton. And I think if he’s got a year left, then obviously if he doesn’t sign another contract he can walk out in a year’s time on a free transfer, but that’s a waste of a year.

“It’s a waste of money that Southampton can get, and invest on other players. For what Danny Ings has done for Southampton, he should have the opportunity to move into a top club. They shouldn’t stand in his way. But at the same time, Man City’s got to pay a proper transfer fee.”

Manchester United have to sign Kane

Reports have suggested that Manchester United are unwilling to meet Tottenham Hotspur’s asking price for striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford for a considerable amount of time. With Edinson Cavani quickly approaching the twilight of his career having only signed a one-year deal at Old Trafford, albeit with the option of a second, the Red Devils have to make a move for Kane.

The Tottenham forward’s Premier League record really does speak for itself.

Now rated at £108m and being paid £200k per week at Tottenham, he has plundered an eye-watering 159 goals in 235 league appearances, an astounding record.

He has hit double figures in each of the last seven campaigns, even notching 30 during the 2017/18 season.

This all means that Kane has a strike rate of 0.67 goals per game, which is better than Marcus Rashford’s 0.31, Anthony Martial’s 0.33, Mason Greenwood’s 0.19 and of course Cavani’s record of 0.33.

With the mercurial Bruno Fernandes teeing Kane up with his 2.8 key passes per game, then an extremely fruitful relationship could well be in the offing in the future.

It won’t just be Kane’s goals that United will benefit from though. The 27-year-old’s creativity has improved just this season.

With ten Premier League matches to go in 2020/21, he already has 13 league assists, having added to those in his exhilarating performance in the 4-1 thumping of Crystal Palace.

The positives of Kane’s arrival at Old Trafford do not end there. Near neighbours Manchester City have also been backed to make a move for the Tottenham superstar in the near future.

If United manage to get there first, it could potentially signal a swing in power, not only in Manchester, but also in the Premier League.

So, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly keen to recruit a striker as soon as this summer, no target makes more sense than Harry Kane.

West Ham in three-way fight to sign Derby County’s highly-rated Jason Knight

David Sullivan can seal West Ham United’s next-generation midfield unit with the January transfer of Derby County’s highly-rated talent Jason Knight.

What’s the word?

According to the Irish Mirror, Knight is at the centre of a three-way Premier League battle in the winter sales with Burnley, Crystal Palace and the Irons all serious about striking a deal.

David Moyes and Roy Hodgson each have the 19-year-old high on their shortlists for mid-season reinforcements, while Sean Dyche’s Clarets have already expressed their interest in a move.

Derby would be expecting a bidding war to erupt this month with Knight under contract at Pride Park through to 2023, while his continued rise has seen his stock skyrocket this season with interim head coach Wayne Rooney a huge fan.

Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny also holds Knight in high-regard following his late call-up to the senior squad in October and impressing in clashes with Wales and Bulgaria, despite initially being set for a role in the Under 21s.

Knight has started 21 of his 22 Championship appearances thus far this season and proved to be creative and vastly versatile, with two goals in eight outings in an attacking midfield role alongside minutes on either wing and in a defensive engine room capacity.

Mark Noble 2.0

West Ham winning the emerging race for Knight’s services could see Sullivan secure Moyes his next Mark Noble and seal the Irons’ next-generation midfield unit by tieing the 19-year-old down to a long-term contract at the London Stadium.

Moyes is due to lose Noble this summer when his £50,000-per-week contract expires, and would not appear set for renewed terms with Mr West Ham playing just 223 minutes of Premier League football thus far this season as Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek lock out the deep-lying roles.

But Knight could be the one to arrive and offer the level of competition Noble can no longer bring having displayed incredible potential with Derby, where the teen talent tears around the field intently harrying opponents as a rare bright spot of a torrid Rams season.

Knight’s all-energy approach has seen him earn rave reviews from those in the Derby ranks, including first-team coach Justin Walker who likens the 5 ft 8 maestro to Manchester United great Roy Keane.

“There’s 100 per cent a bit of Roy Keane in him,” Walker told The Athletic. “I started at Forest as a young kid, so I had the first-hand experience of Roy. I watched him develop at a similar age to Jason when he stepped into Forest’s team. It’s not a lazy comparison, there are some comps in there. But it comes down to self-drive and motivation.”

Knight has brought more than just energy to Pride Park this season, with the 19-year-old a box-to-box threat creating 0.6 shots and 0.6 key balls per Championship game this season along with 1.1 successful tackles, 0.8 dribbles and 5.3 duels won, per SofaScore.

AND in other news, David Moyes must consider a drastic U-turn on an £18m-rated West Ham “monster”.

Leeds can find their Pablo Hernandez successor by signing Celtic’s Ryan Christie in January

The day Pablo Hernandez calls time on his long and illustrious career, Leeds United fans will no doubt be in mourning.

The Spanish wizard has been an absolute revelation since joining from Swansea, making well over 150 appearances for the club and scoring 36 goals and providing 41 assists in total.

But with him turning 36 in April, Victor Orta will have to be on the look-out for a potential long-term successor to the veteran, and he could do a lot worse than bringing in Celtic’s Ryan Christie.

According to reports, there is considerable interest in the Scotland international, and that with him currently being unwilling to sign a contract extension at Parkhead, he could be on the move, with Leeds one of the clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.

Able to play anywhere across midfield, but perhaps at his most destructive when in the middle of the pitch, Christie has been an absolute machine when it’s come to driving Celtic’s attacks.

This season alone has seen him already reach double figures in terms of assists with 11, including setting up a goal each in both of Celtic’s Europa League clashes against Serie A giants Milan.

And when you compare his influence in game with Hernandez, Christie goes clear. As per Sofascore, the latter has averaged an impressive 2.4 shots, 2.6 key passes, and 1.9 dribbles per game this season, whilst Leeds’ resident magician has managed just 0.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles.

That’s not to mention the fact Christie is the kind of hard-working team player who Bielsa would surely love to build his team around – he’s averaging close to two tackles per match in the Scottish Premiership.

Bringing Christie in would go a long way to completing Bielsa’s dream Leeds team as he looks to establish the Whites as a Premier League force.

Meanwhile, Leeds could Bielsa’s dream signing in this “unplayable” £40m star.

Raphinha was threatening but wasteful in frustrating Leeds draw vs Arsenal

Leeds were strong enough to keep Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at bay this evening, but didn’t do enough to snatch all three points. However, Marcelo Bielsa cannot sniff at a point against the Gunners, who are pushing to catch up with ‘top six’ rivals Spurs and Chelsea.

Neither team could break the deadlock and spoils were forced to be shared at Elland Road. Patrick Bamford looked the most likely to score during the evening, but the 27-year-old fluffed his lines on several occasions and missed putting his side in front.

However, it wasn’t just Bielsa’s golden boy who struggled in front of goal tonight. New signing Raphinha, who made his first senior start for his new club, really struggled to find his groove and was extremely wasteful in front of goal.

Raphinha vs Arsenal

The Brazilian reportedly completed just 68% of his attempted passes, despite playing the full 90 minutes for Leeds. Despite his 100% cross and long ball success, he failed to register a single shot on goal, pulling the trigger four times during the match and failing to hit the target with any (via Sofascore).

With neither side able to beat the opposition’s goalkeepers, both Leeds and Arsenal settle for the lone point in their returning Premier League match. The Whites will more than likely be pleased with the result, given the fact their previous two appearances saw them suffer back-to-back 4-1 defeats to Leicester and Crystal Palace.

Leeds creep up a spot in the table and remain the two points behind Arsenal, who are also struggling for points this season. But Bielsa must be focusing on the fact that despite his attackers’ best efforts, they just aren’t finding that final spark to tuck their goals away.

Raphinha was extremely wasteful this evening and may have ruined his chance of starting more games. The £60,000 per week forward slotted in to replace Helder Costa, who didn’t make it off the bench. However, with Everton next to play, Bielsa won’t want to risk fielding the 23-year-old if he couldn’t make his first start for the club count with at least a shot on goal.

In other news, Cellino made massive mistake in selling this former Leeds player…

Spurs missed a massive Moura upgrade in Marcus Thuram

On Tuesday evening, some Tottenham Hotspur supporters witnessed a glimpse of what could’ve been and not just because they missed out on Champions League qualification…

What was the word?

One-time transfer target Marcus Thuram lit up the elite stage, bagging a 25-minute brace against Gareth Bale’s parent club, Real Madrid.

The 23-year-old is a unique combination of pace, height and power and that much was displayed playing on the left-flank where, in addition to his double, he recorded two dribbles, one key pass and a 93% pass accuracy. He also won 80% of his duels, per SofaScore.

According to The Sun during the 2019 January transfer window, Spurs were set to battle north London rivals Arsenal and Manchester United for his signature.

It clearly didn’t come to fruition as by the summer, he joined Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach for just €12m (£11m). He has continued to thrive ever since.

One that got away?

Now valued at €40m (£36m) by CIES Football Observatory, Thuram has become one of the Bundesliga’s most exciting forwards – outside the absolute joke of a frontline that Bayern Munich possess.

That brace took his total for Gladbach to 17. He’s also provided 13 assists, meaning he’s contributed to 30 goals in just 47 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

In 31 league matches last term, the Frenchman averaged two dribbles, 1.8 shots and one key pass per game, which is way better than what current Spurs star Lucas Moura has managed this season in the Premier League.

His 0.8 shots, 0.5 dribbles and 0.3 key passes per appearance, via WhoScored, is a shambles in comparison especially as he’s been competing at the top level for a far greater time period.

Despite being the son of legendary France World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, the 23-year-old is quite the opposite and has been likened to Anthony Martial in the past.

Gladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl believes they have a gem on their hands, calling Thuram a “fast, robust and dangerous forward” whilst former Saint-Etienne coach Jean-Louis Gasset dubbed him a “great player” with a “great future”.

For just £11m, you can’t help but feel that Daniel Levy missed a winner here. His ability to play anywhere across the front three could’ve helped solve the back-up striker problem prior to Carlos Vinicius’ arrival too.

AND in other news, Premier League misfit could’ve been the DREAM Eriksen successor…
