Young guns good for future of Pakistan

Once one had got over the disappointment, a huge disappointment for Pakistan had come tantalisingly close to winning, one felt good for the future of Pakistan cricket. A new generation had arrived, young legs, fresh minds but most of all, self-belief.One had expected something special from Shoaib Akhtar and being the showman that he is, he chose to encapsulate it in one over, the best single over I have seen bowled by a Pakistani fast bowler, Ponting, Mark Waugh and Adam Gilchrist blown away and the Test match turned on its head. But it was Faisal Iqbal who played the shot of the match when he arrived at the wicket in the first innings. He took two steps down the wicket and he hit Shane Warne over the top for a one-bounce four. It was a shot that had pedigree written all over it.One could imagine his uncle, Javed Miandad jumping out of his chair. It was the sort of shot that Miandad himself would have played to scatter the gloom that hung over the Pakistan innings. For too long has Faisal Iqbal carried the baggage of being Miandad’s nephew. It has worked against him. Being cynical and an uncharitable lot, we could not accept that he was an immensely gifted batsman in his own right. He has now broken free and the young lad is here to stay. Had he had someone to partner him after Younis Khan was out, Pakistan might have won the Test. He was my man-of-the-match.The Test match had begun badly for Pakistan because the team selection was flawed. If, for whatever reason, Shahid Afridi was not in Colombo but Danish Kaneria was there. Pakistan was one spinner short and one fast bowler too many.In the end, it did not prove too costly but Australia did look like getting to 600 and Saqlain Mushtaq had to do a dual job, attack as well as contain. Just as well he was on song and he teamed up with Shoaib Akhtar to mop up the tail. But this is now history and we should concentrate on the positives. Pakistan’s problem has been the absence of reliable openers. In the first innings, Imran Nazir and Taufiq Umar were a bundle of nerves and they both failed to get off the mark.In the second innings, it was a different story. Admittedly Imran Nazir had his share of luck. The Australian slip fielders, indeed proved to be good samaritans in both the Pakistan innings. But once he had settled down, Imran Nazir looked good. Taufiq Umar was not just solid but he was, at times, magnificent. He has the making of a fine opener, in both versions of the game.I fail to understand why Abdul Razzaq has to be made a sacrificial lamb. His rightful place in the batting order is in the middle. There is no reason at all why Younis should not be coming at one-down. In that batting line-up, he is the most accomplished. That’s where he should be batting. In the second innings, the openers had given Pakistan an excellent start. Younis should have come in and Razzaq saved to bolster the middle. After such a heartwarming performance, this may seem to be nit-picking. But there are two Test matches still to be played. Pakistan must get the basics right. Pakistan will feel more at home in Sharjah and it’s a happy hunting ground. It will still be hot but the humidity factor will not be that high and it’s not likely to rain. There may even be more people at ground to watch the matches. The Colombo test match deserved a full house. It was a terrific game of cricket and the Australians were certainly surprised how hard a young and inexperienced side fought and come so close to toppling them off the pedestal.Wasim Akram and Saeed Anwar chose not to play in the series against Australia because they needed ‘rest’. I was, therefore, a little surprised to see that both of them had scooted-off to Cardiff to play in an indoor match with some ridiculous format. This would not be my idea of rest. Saeed Anwar may well have lost his place in the team to Taufiq Umar. I cannot say that Wasim Akram too has lost his place but I would certainly like him to be further ‘rested’ when Pakistan tours Zimbabwe next month. There is some disappointment that Misbah-ul-Haq did not make too much of a contribution. But he will have to learn the hard way. He may have tonked Shane Warne for a couple of sixes in Nairobi but that was a one-day game and this was a Test match. But he’s a good player, good enough, one hopes, to learn from his mistakes. The same would apply to Imran Nazir. He should be made to look at the video of the way he got out in both the innings. May be Pybus will have more luck with him than Mudassar Nazar did.

Leeds target Junior Firpo is perfect for Bielsa

Leeds United transfer target Junior Firpo seems like the perfect fit for Marcelo Bielsa amid Fabrizio Romano’s latest update.

What’s the story?

BBC reporter Adam Pope has revealed that the Whites are keen on signing Firpo, with the Spaniard set to cost around €15m (£12.8m).

And now, Romano has claimed that Bielsa’s side are nearing a deal for the left-back.

Via his official Twitter account, the journalist said: “Leeds are set to sign Junior Firpo from Barcelona, confirmed. The agreement will be completed for €15m + add ons, final details then deal done. #LUFC #FCB”

Fans surely buzzing

In the time that the summer transfer window has been often, Leeds fans have seen plenty of names linked with arriving at Elland Road, with the likes of Romain Perraud and Javi Galan, in particular, those who have been mentioned the most.

But a deal for Firpo is a hugely exciting one, especially given the kind of rave reviews he has earned for his ability and athleticism.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Evening Post, player analyst, Josh Hobbs, said: “My feeling is that he’s not great at winning the ball in duels but I don’t think it matters hugely. He is an excellent athlete and in our man-marking system that can cover for a few issues in defensive fundamentals.

“Going forwards, he’s a good dribbler – particularly when he gets up to speed and he can steam past players. He likes to play a pass into midfield and then sprint down the line to receive in behind and get into the box.

“His delivery in wide areas is usually a fizzed low cross, which is dangerous as often if the player at the front post misses it, can be met by somebody running centrally or to the back post.”
While Firpo may not have been a regular starter at the Camp Nou last season – he played just 18 times in all competitions – he is the kind of attacking left-back who seems to be a perfect fit for Bielsa’s Leeds.
In his real breakthrough season with Real Betis during the 2018/2019 campaign, Firpo managed three goals and four assists in La Liga, as well as averaging 0.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game.
The £85k-a-week earning ace’s arrival is sure to have fans buzzing at Elland Road, not least because of his attacking instincts, but also because it brings an end to their long-running pursuit of signing a new first-team left-back.
Meanwhile, Leeds have suffered a major transfer blow…

Everton transfer update on Allan

Many Everton fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged involving Allan.

Speaking on the Radio Goal broadcast on the Kiss Kiss Napoli station (via Area Napoli), journalist Valter De Maggio has shared that the central midfield player has told him that he will be staying at Goodison Park, and that he is ‘very happy’ there.

Allan ahs been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the summer window, to reunite with his former manager Carlo Ancelotti.

However, it seems as if he is set to stay at the Merseyside club, which has come as a welcome relief to several Toffees supporters, given how much of a key player he is for them.

In the 2020/21 season, the Brazilian played in 26 games in total, tending to start more often than not when he was available (Transfermarkt).

Palmer expects Moore to target ex-players

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer expects Darren Moore to target players at his old clubs Doncaster Rovers and West Brom this summer.

This comes after YorkshireLive journalist Dom Howson recently reported that the Owls have genuine interest in Doncaster defender Reece James, though a deal looks unlikely due to the 27-year-old preferring a move to the Championship.

Wednesday’s financial difficulties at the moment will also not help their cause for James or any potential target for that matter.

However, should the situation improve, Palmer thinks Moore could look at some of the Englishman’s Doncaster team-mates, as well as players at West Brom, as he looks to rebuild the Owls’ squad ahead of the new League One campaign.

“I’m sure he’ll look at Doncaster; I’m sure he’ll look at West Brom,” the ex-Wednesday player told TT.

“Whenever you go anywhere as a manager, you always go back to your former club because you know the players inside out and you know what they bring to the table.

“You know what they bring to the dressing room and you know what they’ll bring to the team. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see players coming from Doncaster and players coming from West Brom. I wouldn’t be surprised at all.”

Again, a lot will surely depend on Dejphon Chansiri addressing the current financial issues at the club – such as paying players’ wages. But, ultimately, it would not be a shock to see Moore target more names at Doncaster.

Phillips discusses Bamford’s dip at Leeds

Former England striker Kevin Phillips believes Patrick Bamford’s recent struggles are down to fatigue, with reinforcements needed this summer.

The Lowdown: Bamford experiences dip

Leeds United have had numerous star performers this season, but Bamford has undoubtedly been one of the key men, scoring 14 goals and registering seven assists in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old has suffered a noticeable dip of late, however, not finding the net in his last five appearances – his last goal came at Fulham on March 19th – and lacking his usual all-round influence.

The Latest: Phillips blames fatigue

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips claimed a long season has caught up with Bamford, saying it is why Marcelo Bielsa needs to sign another striker this summer:

“Bamford has played an awful lot of football this season and I think fatigue is setting in. He looks a bit tired to me. He has worked his socks off this season so there is no way I am going to criticise him because he has had a fantastic season.

“As a striker, you need to just keep believing. He will be watching videos and putting extra work in on the training ground.

“It is hard because he was on a hell of a run but the goals can dry up. He needs to keep putting himself in good positions and if he does that the goals will come.

“He has played a lot of football though so I think tiredness and fatigues is kicking in. They need to sign somebody in the summer who can share the burden.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: No worries over Bamford

It is only natural that Bamford has dropped off a little recently, considering the relentless nature of this season and Bielsa’s physical demands of his players.

The Englishman has started all 34 league games, highlighting how much football he has played and why he may now be running on empty, even with Phillips suggesting he may actually be doing extra work on top of all that at Thorp Arch.

Bringing in an extra striker ahead of next season would ease the burden on Bamford, as Phillips alludes to, allowing him more of a breather and keeping him fresh for a whole campaign.

In other news, one Leeds-related transfer deal has reportedly been agreed – find out who the player in question is here.
