Jetro Willems’ form shows he would be an astute permanent signing by Newcastle

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

The summer signing of Jetro Willems went somewhat under the radar, due in part to Allan Saint-Maximin joining at the same time, but he is quickly proving himself to arguably be their best capture of the previous transfer window.

Newcastle spent big on the likes of Saint-Maximin and Joelinton, but loanee Willems has outperformed both and looks natural in the left wing-back role at St James’ Park, making him a valuable asset to Steve Bruce.

The Magpies boss has set-up with the same formation in the majority of the 11 Premier League games he has overseen, and Willems is a commanding figure in the 5-3-2 formation.

His pace and tireless energy allows him to get up and down the flank with great effect, and it hasn’t taken long for him to win over the fans.

An expertly taken goal at Anfield helped with that, but in truth he has been effective in a number of games, and defensively has helped his side keep three clean sheets in the league.

His 2.1 tackles per game, according to WhoScored, have been crucial to that. Only two players in the squad have averaged a higher amount, and considering his usefulness going forward there aren’t many more well-rounded players than him at the club.

The only downside is that he is not yet a permanent Newcastle player, but judging by his stats so far the Magpies should look to meet the €11m (£9.5m) agreed clause with parent club Eintracht Frankfurt.

He has impressed with his close control and clever touches at times, too. He has only averaged one successful dribble per game but he is unpredictable and adept with both feet, and that was what allowed him to get the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold for his Anfield goal.

Willems’ technical ability has been recognised by Guus Hiddink, and the former Chelsea boss previously suggested the Netherlands international could be “as good as Roberto Carlos”.

Though it looks unlikely he will reach such heights, his ten key passes in the league prove that he is deserving of greater praise than what he has received so far, and if he maintains his current level then he should help his team move away from relegation trouble.

To do that he will need to improve his pass accuracy of 77%. It is a poor return and a contributing factor to Newcastle’s terrible average of 38% possession, and if the Magpies are to begin imposing themselves on matches then he will have to perform better.

That being said, £9.5m is still a bit of a bargain in the current transfer climate, and given the dearth of quality in that area of the squad, it is a deal the club should look to get over the line soon.

Crystal Palace fans react to reported interest in Tottenham’s Kyle Walker-Peters

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after The Sun reported that Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters will leave north London on loan in January and the Eagles are interested.

The England U21 full-back has made three Premier League starts so far this season, all coming in the first three league games of the campaign.

Following the 1-0 loss to Newcastle, the 22-year-old was dropped by Mauricio Pochettino in favour of Serge Aurier, who has retained his place in the XI.

Walker-Peters – who came through the Spurs academy – has been tipped to join Palace seemingly as Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s temporary replacement – the Eagles never replaced the right-back after his summer departure to Manchester United, leaving Joel Ward as their only recognised senior option in that department.

Two fans below said that Ward is better than Walker-Peters, whereas another supporter said the youngster would be a good back-up for Ward if he were to get injured.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction, where none of the Selhurst Park faithful seem overly impressed with the links…

Barcelona fans take to Twitter to shower Alex Collado with praise

Barcelona’s La Masia is still very much full of talent.

Nowadays, maybe it’s not as popular as it used to be back when the likes of Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol were around, but their production line never stops.

One of the big talents emerging from the Catalans’ academy is the 20-year-old Alex Collado.

The young talent scored a brilliant back-heeled goal for Barca’s B team recently, in the 89th minute, no less, and he seems to be getting much more attention now.

Or at least, he seems to be rather popular among the Barca fans, who were showering him with all sorts of compliments and praise in reply to his latest Twitter post, both gushing over his goal and his skill in general.

Words like “crack” were thrown around a lot, meaning star in English.

It still remains to be seen whether the 20-year-old will ever reach his potential and earn a promotion into the senior team but at the moment, he already seems to be a fan-favourite.

You can see some of the fans’ reactions and replies in the tweets below:

Tottenham fans react as Troy Parrott scores for Republic of Ireland Under-21s

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur youngster Troy Parrott scored the winner as Republic of Ireland Under-21s recorded a 1-0 victory over Armenia Under-21s on Friday night.

It was actually Parrott’s debut for ROI at that level of football, and the 17-year-old found the back of the net with a cool finish from close range.

The teenager is yet to make a first-team appearance for Spurs this season, but he was heavily involved in their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign.

What’s more, Parrott has netted twice in one Premier League 2 appearance for the club’s Under-23 outfit this term, which is another indication of his talent.

As expected, a number of Tottenham fans took to social media to comment on the forward’s goal, and many have called for head coach Mauricio Pochettino to hand him some first-team action after the international break.

Harry who? How Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu has already filled the big boots of Maguire

[ad_pod ]

When Leicester City signed Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg the summer before last in a deal worth up to £19m barely a ripple was made. The 22-year-old was joining a club whose principle centre-backs were Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire and not many people expected the Turkish international to break that partnership up. This duly came to pass with Soyuncu making only six league appearances last term with a couple of EFL Cup games thrown in.

When Leicester City sold Harry Maguire in early August for a world record fee for a defender an awful lot of ripples were made, but returning to Soyuncu he was now even more off the grid. All the attention beyond the Maguire sale centred on who the Foxes would be bringing in to replace him with Burnley’s James Tarkowski mentioned many times in dispatches along with Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake.

Just one month into the new campaign and they’re talking about Soyuncu a lot now. And so far the reviews have been spectacular.

It all began on the opening day of the season when the floppy-fringed giant put in a formidable performance against Wolves at the King Power Stadium. So impressive was the display he reportedly received a standing ovation from his team-mates post-match and highly deserved it was too. Soyuncu made the second most successful passes and tackles of any Premier League defender that weekend as his unerring reading of danger and whole commitment kept the visitors almost single-handedly at bay at times.

This commanding introduction was followed up by a further three imperious outings – that included a stoic draw at Stamford Bridge – but it is not merely the elite levels shown thus far that is rapidly making him one of the talking points of this Premier League year. With his aforementioned locks and muscular style that could be termed ‘swashbuckling’ if we’re feeling a touch whimsical, Soyuncu has already gained a cult status in the Midlands, so much so that Maguire’s name is a distant memory.

“You sense the supporters are really enjoying watching him play,” Brendan Rodgers said recently, of a role not traditionally regarded as entertaining. “He does a couple of wee maverick things that make you wonder sometimes.”

The defender’s unanticipated rise has also brought into the public domain an interesting insight into his transfer back in 2018 and the reasons behind it. In addition to being naturally attracted to an accomplished centre-back yet to hit his development ceiling the thinking at Leicester was that Soyuncu would prove an able replacement should Maguire depart for Old Trafford. To clarify: this was a decision taken in 2018, well over twelve months ago.

Check out the fan in the video below who thinks he could beat Joey Barton in a fight…

Following a season of adaptation to the demands and pace of English football the Foxes’ long-term thinking looks to now be paying off handsomely and all while saving themselves a fortune in the transfer market.

It is still too premature to be making any heightened claims about a player who is still learning and from that learning will come mistakes. But in ‘super’ Soyuncu there is enough pace, composure and bravery to take risks to know that Leicester’s future looks rock solid at the back.

Leeds fans loved Kalvin Phillips’ performance against Salford

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United booked their spot in the second round of the EFL Cup courtesy of a 3-0 win away to Salford City on Tuesday night.

It was a commanding performance from the Championship outfit, who proved to be far too strong for their League Two hosts.

Eddie Nketiah scoring on his debut will perhaps be the main story from Leeds’ point of view but the performance of Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the park was outstanding.

The 23-year-old was named the Man of the Match for his display, which was not much of a surprise.

And as expected, a number of Leeds fans have taken to social media to lavish praise on the midfielder, who was strongly linked with a move to Aston Villa during the summer.

The Whites managed to keep hold of the academy product, though, and he will be hoping to inspire his team to a successful season.
