Wolves linked with Rangers boss Gerrard

Wolves have been linked with a move for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard recently and it would be a huge blow if the 40-year-old manager were to depart Ibrox this summer.

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, whilst Wolves are close to appointing Benfica boss Bruno Lage as their successor to Nuno Espirito Santo, there are still doubts over whether he will be eligible for a work permit, whilst Gerrard and Frank Lampard have both been considered as options by the Molineux outfit.

Fortunately for Rangers fans, it is claimed that Gerrard has not been formally approached by Wolves about their vacant manager position but if the appointment of Lage falls through, it would not be a surprise if they do act on their reported interest in the Liverpool legend.

Could Gerrard be lured away from Rangers by Wolves?

Wolves have established themselves as a Premier League force to be reckoned with since their promotion to the top-flight in 2018, as they have secured seventh, seventh and 13th placed finishes in their three seasons back in the Premier League.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Whilst this season was something of a struggle for the Midlands club, they were without star striker Raul Jimenez for much of the campaign after his fractured skull injury, whilst fellow forward Diogo Jota joined Liverpool last summer.

The Old Gold have a recent European campaign under their belt, as they reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, so certainly have the potential to challenge both domestically and in Europe in the near future.

Although the “amazing” Gerrard has just won the title at Rangers and is undoubtedly looking forward to his side playing in the Champions League next season, Wolves would offer him a chance to test himself in the Premier League at an established club, which might just be enough to lure him away from Ibrox.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Certainly, when you consider the impact he has had during his time at Ibrox, it would be a massive blow to Rangers chairman Douglas Park if he were to leave the club this summer, so Gers fans will be desperate for Lage’s work permit to be approved so that he can take over at Molineux.

Forget Kane: Levy set for Spurs disaster

Daniel Levy could be about to make a massive mistake at Tottenham Hotspur…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Spurs are planning to sell midfielder Dele Alli despite him featuring in the final five matches of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

A source told the website that the North London outfit will still listen to offers for the £26m-rated star this summer.

Ex-manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sell the 25-year-0ld in the last transfer window but a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain was blocked by Levy – now he appears to have changed his stance.

Huge mistake

A lot is likely to happen at Spurs this summer, not at least because they need to find their next manager, first and foremost. He should then probably be the one to make the decision on Alli, not Levy or anyone else in the club’s hierarchy.

Alli showed glimpses of life in these final few matches and that should not result in him being put in the shop window.

Given the situation surrounding his teammate Harry Kane, he’s likely to be very much needed next season as Spurs cannot afford to lose all of their top talents.

It’s thought that the 27-year-old is pushing to leave the club after another season ended without silverware, with both Manchester clubs – who are in each of the European finals – mooted with interest, as per Sky Sports.

Without their leading talisman, Spurs are a far weaker prospect and are less attractive to any new manager – take out Alli, who still is nowhere near reaching his peak, then there aren’t many pegs to build a team around.

He was once lauded as a “freak of a talent” having pocketed a second successive Young PFA Player of the Year award and scored a whopping 18 goals from midfield during the 2016/17 season.

And interim head coach Ryan Mason found a way to reintegrate him after Mourinho left him as an outcast for the majority of the season.

Alli started their last five games for the very first time this season and even provided an assist. He had only started twice before that, as per Transfermarkt.

You can’t help but feel that Kane’s future is out of Levy’s hands right now, so he really needs to be keeping around players like Alli for the new manager.

To sell a player before the new manager has had a chance to look at him and speak with him would be a disastrous decision by Levy and is one that he should not make.

Liverpool fans hail Thiago’s performance

A number of Liverpool supporters have been lauding Thiago’s performance in the Reds’ exceptional 4-2 win away to Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp’s picked up a memorable victory at Old Trafford on Thursday night, potentially putting destiny in their own hands in the Premier League top-four battle.

Having fallen behind, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino turned the game on its head before half-time, before the Brazilian struck again after the interval.

Marcus Rashford’s goal made for a nervy ending, before Mohamed Salah put the icing on the cake in the dying seconds.

It was one of Liverpool’s most important wins of the season, with numerous players standing out, not least the superb Trent Alexander-Arnold.

One individual who really caught the eye was Thiago though, who shone in the middle of the park, both in terms of his quality on the ball and work-rate off it.

Wolves fans on Patricio transfer update

Some Wolves fans have been left to fume as a transfer update emerged on Rui Patricio.

As per Calciomercato, Jose Mourinho wants to bring an experienced goalkeeper with him to AS Roma, and at 33 years of age and a full Portugal international, Patricio fits that mould.

He has been named as one of the ‘keepers that the Serie A club may target in the summer window, and could well be available for as little as €8-10m (£6.9-£8.6m).

This has not been deemed to be enough in the eyes of some members of the Molineux faithful for a regular starter, who has not missed a single minute in the Premier League so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, without a suitable replacement lined up, it would be silly for the Midlands club to let go of one of their key players for such a small fee.

These WWFC supporters fumed as the update was shared on Twitter, with one fan even going as far as to claim that the reported price was a ‘joke’:

Allardyce will walk if not backed

Former West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he expects Sam Allardyce to walk away from his old club if he is not offered financial reassurances.

Talks with the board over his future are imminent following West Brom’s relegation from the Premier League, with a clause in his contract allowing either party to end things now that it has been confirmed that the Baggies will play in the Championship next season.

Having won promotion from English football’s second division in the past, keeping Allardyce on from a West Brom perspective looks a no-brainer.

However, Palmer is convinced the 66-year-old will only stay at the Hawthorns if he is given the tools to bring the Midlands outfit back up at the first time of asking.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about Big Sam’s future, the ex-West Brom player said:

“I think the main thing will be, I think they will want to keep Sam Allardyce, for sure. He’s proven that he can do that before, get teams back at the first attempt. But obviously now they’ve got relegated, it will be a case of what the situation is financially.

“If they’re going to cut back massively financially because they’ve gone and Sam doesn’t believe that he’s got a chance to bring them back at the first attempt, he won’t stay.”

According to Sky Sports, if Allardyce does end up departing, then the Baggies could turn to former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder.

Hasenhuttl should unleash Salisu vs LFC

Southampton travel to Anfield on Saturday night looking to complete a historic double against Liverpool, and Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl should unleash Mohammed Salisu in order to give his team the best chance of victory against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Ghanaian produced arguably his best display in a Southampton shirt in their 1-1 draw with Leicester City last time out, as he came on as an early substitute for Nathan Tella following Jannik Vestergaard’s red card and was vital in Hasenhuttl’s side earning a point, making a whopping 11 clearances.

Although the Denmark international has subsequently had his red card overturned, meaning he will be available for the game at Anfield tonight, Salisu’s performance still warrants him a start against the Reds, even if he is deployed at left-back.

Following the game against Leicester, Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach was full of praise for the 2020 signing, saying: “He was heroic tonight. He steps up explosively, getting out and to the ball with unrivaled enthusiasm. He is a monster in one-on-one situations and is, in all honesty, one of the fastest defenders ever to wear Southampton colours.”

Ryan Bertrand’s absence through injury means that the 22-year-old is a likely candidate to start at left-back and he could prove to be a key factor in the result, as he will most likely be up against Liverpool’s danger man Mohamed Salah.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-southampton-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=” Latest Southampton news, transfer rumours and more!”]

The Egyptian has been one consistent performer in a disappointing campaign for the Merseyside club, which sees them battling for a top four spot after winning the title so comfortably last season.

Salah has 20 Premier League goals this season and will be a huge threat down the right-hand side with his pace and dribbling, so it would make more sense to go with Salisu there than Jack Stephens, who started in that unfamiliar position against Leicester.

The Englishman is not blessed with pace and is naturally right-footed, so he would likely struggle up against against Salah if Hasenhuttl keeps his faith in him at left-back at Anfield.

Therefore, after his superb performance last time out, Hasenhuttl should definitely start Salisu on Saturday night. If he can keep Salah quiet, then the Saints have a decent chance of earning three points which would secure their Premier League status for next season.

West Ham preparing Edouard swoop

According to a report by Football Insider, GSB have ‘made progress behind the scenes’ in recent days as they look to sign Celtic star Odsonne Edouard – with West Ham United now climbing into pole position.

GSB making progress for Edouard

The Frenchman has bagged an impressive 20 goals in all competitions for the Hoops and continues to attract serious interest as a result, including from GSB and West Ham.

Edouard has been scoring goals prolifically north of the border for many seasons, totalling 57 SPFL strikes since the 2017/2018 campaign – as well as assisting his teammates 25 times (Transfermarkt).

His form at Parkhead has prompted West Ham to prepare a swoop as they lay the groundwork and enter pole position, according to Football Insider, and the outlet even claim he could leave for as little as £8 million.

As explained, GSB have allegedly ‘made progress behind the scenes’ as they hope to get a deal in place before the window opens.

Transfer Tavern take

Former boss Neil Lennon, often blown away by Edouard’s performances before his dismissal, most recently called him ‘magnificent’ after a wonderful outing away to Hamilton (Glasgow Live).

And we believe the striker definitely has what it takes to be a success in the English top flight judging by his consistent goal return over the last few seasons.

If Football Insider’s information on the ridiculously cheap price tag of £8m comes to fruition, signing Edouard seems like a real no brainer for West Ham and manager David Moyes – even if he didn’t step up to the plate in England, there is little risk involved.

Arguably, going by this fresh update, Edouard should even be up there with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney as a priority Hammers striker target.

Bruce grants players multiple days off

Newcastle players have been granted a raft of days off despite their dismal defeat at Brighton, with players left stunned that Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley have not dismissed Steve Bruce.

A Daily Mail exclusive from Craig Hope claims that the Toon Army will report to Darsley Park on Tuesday for the first time since that 3-0 loss at the Amex.

That will kick-off a period of three days’ training, but there are then no sessions pencilled in between Friday and Monday.

The report says that players have become ‘increasingly concerned’ at the amount of time off they have been given in the midst of their battle to stay in the Premier League.

Hope also claims that parts of the squad are ‘shocked’ Ashley and Charnley haven’t pulled the trigger on Bruce after the loss to Brighton, with this latest raft of days off only adding to the sense of bemusement.

A club source defended the plan, citing the ‘mental and physical wellbeing’ of the squad. The hope is that it will ease the feeling of the pressure ahead of the run-in.

Six senior players are currently away on international duty – Martin Dubravka, Emil Krafth, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser.

Transfer Tavern verdict

If you were a Newcastle fan, you would probably want to see your players on as strict a regime as possible over this break.

After all, there were signs in that Brighton game that certain players’ focus had wavered, and that is unacceptable in these circumstances.

It feels like the last thing this squad needs is more time for their focus to shift away from what really matters, which is likely what these increased days off will do.

In other news, Graeme Souness offered a bleak warning in the wake of Saturday’s game.
