Explosive Campbell thumps Mumbai

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

The chase was over in a blink. Ryan Campbell hit an explosive half-century in front of a boisterous home crowd to charge the Ahmedabad Rockets to a crushing win over the hapless Mumbai Champs, who had dawdled to 130.”To just get past the first ball was a start for me,” said Campbell, also Man of the Match, after failing in his first two innings. The relief was palpable. And what an innings.Campbell, an explosive batsman from Western Australia, began the carnage after two quiet overs. He slammed Johan van der Wath to fine leg and the extra-cover boundary after fellow opener Parvez Aziz picked up two fours in the same over. Campbell then turned his attention to Michael Kasprowicz, hitting him first over mid-off before clearing long-off. He wasn’t done, yet. In the fifth over, he hit Ranjit Khirid all around the ground in a 15-run over. After five overs the score read 54 for 0 and though Aziz fell just after, slogging across the line, Campbell batted on fluently. He slowed down temporarily, having raced to 46 from 18 balls, but upped the tempo again to finish unbeaten on 92 from 51 balls. Victory was achieved with such ease that Mumbai were again exposed as the weakest team in the tournament.Even in the first game, where Mumbai stretched it to the last over, the quality was below par. It was another average performance from them today. The start set the tone: Robin Morris miscued a pull, Nathan Astle flicked a slower one straight to deep square leg and Raviraj Patil ran himself out. Taufeeq Umar picked up the odd boundary and Hasan Raza dealt in singles but they couldn’t create any momentum. Ahmedabad’s Bhima Rao had a great day in the field, taking four catches and effecting a direct-hit run out. Rao, identified by the ICL’s high performance director Jock Campbell as the fittest player at the preceding physical training camp, lived up to the high praise. It took the entry of van der Wath at the end of the 16th over to breathe some life into the game. In the 18th over, he pulled Heath Streak for two fours and launched one over long-on and really exploded in the last over of the innings against the same bowler. The first one, a full delivery, was dismissed over long-on, the second, a slower one, was carted to cow corner before van der Wath finished off with two more sixes. He finished on 41 from 15 balls, with four sixes. Post van der Wath’s arrival, the score jumped from 79 for 6 to 130 but it was too little. The ICL caravan moved to a new venue today but encountered an old problem. The light towers crashed for the third time in the tournament, holding up play for 45 minutes. Luckily, no overs were lost, and the partisan crowd thoroughly enjoyed their team’s domination.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Will Hughes update

Aston Villa target Will Hughes is training with Watford’s Under-23’s, according to The Athletic, cited by Birmingham Live.

And a number of Villa fans have been having their say on a possible Midlands move following the latest development.

Hughes was again linked with a move to Villa Park last week, with reports suggesting Dean Smith is keen on the central midfielder.

Hornets goalkeeper Ben Foster urged the 26-year-old to stay at Vicarage Road and snub a move to Villa in a YouTube video at the beginning of the month.

The Athletic suggest that Hughes, who has 12 months remaining on his contract, will now train with Watford’s U23’s until his future is resolved one way or the other.

Villa fans react

@AVFC_News shared the update on Hughes training with the U23’s, asking fans if he would fit the bill at Villa Park.

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many against any possible move for the midfielder and one describing it as ‘strange’.

“NOOOOOOOO. Not what we’re after. Plus I would rather keep Hourihane!”Credit: @8Tsang”With all due respect it seems a waste of a squad position when we already have better in McGinn, Luiz and Nakamba with uncertainty still over Hourihane. Not that Hughes is a bad player but hardly what’s needed to push us to the next level.”Credit: @JamesCourten”Would have a couple of years ago. Seems a strange move now.”Credit: @SteveSomewhere”No a few years back at Derby he was on the upgrade, career has gone backwards since.”Credit: @sparkym5″Ward Prowse please Sir”Credit: @feed_me_sport”This transfer has Steve Bruce or Sean Dyche written all over it”Credit: @MrWayneGarton

Saints eye Adarabioyo

According to The Daily Express, Southampton are interested in signing Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham this summer.

The Lowdown: Saints eye Vestergaard replacement

The Saints have already been busy during this transfer window, making five signings in Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com), Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com), Valentino Livramento, Armando Broja and Adam Armstrong.

However, the departure of Jannik Vestergaard to Leicester City (lcfc.com) means the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit could do without another centre-back.

The Latest: Saints eye Adarabioyo

Now, it seems Southampton are interested in signing Adarabioyo.

As per the report, the 23-year-old has a £10m release his contract at Craven Cottage, while Norwich City are also believed to be interested in his services.

The Verdict: Solid option

The Saints have been looking to bring in young players during this transfer window – they have not signed anyone over the age of 25 – and Adarabioyo certainly fits that billing.

Former Blackburn defender Darren Lenihan called him “exceptional” (Goal.com), while Pep Guardiola even had praise for the defender (allnigeriasoccer.com).

He also has 33 Premier League appearances (Transfermarkt), showing he has already held his own at the highest level. £10m for a player of the former England U19 international’s man potential is hardly a huge fee – Ralph Hasenhuttl and co should make their move quick to make sure they get their man.

In other news, Southampton fans want to sign this four-time league winner.

Roma set to target Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City could face a battle to keep Kelechi Iheanacho at the club this summer after reports revealed that AS Roma are considering making an offer for the 24-year-old.

What’s the story?

According to Sky Sports, the Italian outfit are contemplating tabling a bid for the Nigeria international if they fail to sign Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham.

The report states: “Abraham is currently weighing up his Stamford Bridge future after the Serie A side agreed a £34m deal to sign the striker. The 23-year-old [sic] has asked for time to consider the offer from the Italian club, who are managed by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, with Roma general manager Tiago Pinto meeting Abraham for talks in London on Thursday.”

If the Serie A giants do make a move for Iheanacho and are successful in their attempts to secure his signature, it would leave Leicester extremely light at the top end of the pitch with very little time to find an adequate replacement.

Leicester City fans will be gutted

Although Iheanacho’s potential exit is far from guaranteed, a large section of Leicester supporters will likely still be gutted to hear that one of their star players is on the wish list of a prominent club like Roma.

The appeal of playing in the Italian capital for the decorated Jose Mourinho would be enough to turn many players’ heads, but Foxes fans will be desperate for the youngster to stay for the foreseeable future.

Iheanacho hit top form last season, bagging 19 goals and providing seven assists in 39 appearances for Leicester, helping them claim their maiden FA Cup crown.

He has continued in the same vein at the start of the new season, scoring the winner from the penalty spot as Leicester saw off Manchester City in the Community Shield last Saturday.

Although the addition of former RB Salzburg hitman Patson Daka has significantly strengthened Brendan Rodgers’ forward line, the loss of Iheanacho – especially so close to the end of the current transfer window – would be a bitter blow.

Leicester fans will surely be hoping that Abraham agrees a deal to move to the Stadio Olimpico, leaving them free to enjoy the quality of Iheanacho a little while longer.

Yorkshire end Cidermen's dream of retaining the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy

The Somerset dream of retaining the Cheltenham and Gloucester trophy to salvage something from their disappointing season was ended when they were beaten by Yorkshire in the final at Lord’s

Richard Walsh31-Aug-2002The Somerset dream of retaining the Cheltenham and Gloucester trophy to salvage something from their disappointing season was ended when they were beaten by Yorkshire in the final at Lord’s.The Yorkshire victory was founded upon a five wicket haul from Matthew Hoggard and an unbeaten century from Man of the Match winner Matt Elliott. After winning the toss the Somerset innings got off to a bright start with openers Marcus Trescothick and Peter Bowler putting on 41 in quicktime before the returning Trescothick was out for 27 the victim of a spectacular catch by Michael Vaughan.Bowler was then joined by Jamie Cox, and together they gave Somerset a solid platform on which to build, adding 81 for the second wicket in 15.3 overs until Cox fell LBW to McGrath after making 34.With the score on 122 Mike Burns, whose selection was in some doubt beforehand after he suffered a knee problem at Blackpool joined the veteran Bowler who two overs later reached his fifty. With the score on 159 Hoggard changed to the Nursery End, and with his first ball tempted Bowler who gave a catch to wicket-keeper Richard Blakey. Bowler had batted for just over two hours and faced 89 balls for his 67 runs.Burns(21) was next man out with the score on 171. Somerset’s new England man Ian Blackwell was warmly applauded to the wicket, but on this occasion failed to deliver and was comprehensively bowled by Ryan Sidebottom. With ten overs left and the score on 191 for 5, two of last years batting heroes Keith Parsons and Rob Turner came together at the wicket . The pair brought up the Somersret 200, but after pushing the score along Turner gave a simple catch to Craig White at short mid wicket and the Cidermen were 230 for 6.The overs were running out and quick runs were needed so Richard Johnson was promoted ahead of his former Middlesex team mate Keith Dutch and was lucky to survive a run out. With Somerset still chasing runs, shortly afterwards Johnson swung hard at Hoggard and turned to see his stumps upended. With Somerset on 233 for 7 Dutch joined Parsons and brought a real cheer from the Somerset fans with first the boundary for a while, and when Parsons brought up the 250 in the last over there was even more to cheer about. But the cheering was short lived when he was caught by Sidebottom at long on from the next ball for 41.Dutch brought the innings to a close with a blistering cover drive to the boundary but the Somerset total of 256 for 8 seemed short of what was promised earlier on, with only eight boundaries in the last twenty overs, during which only 108 runs had been scored.Dangerman Craig White got the Yorkshire reply off to a very positive start when he dispatched Andrew Caddick’s second ball to the cover boundary, but his threat was short lived as in the third over he edged Johnson to wicket-keeper Turner, and Yorkshire were 19 for 1.Three balls later the Somerset fans had even more to cheer about when Johnson struck again as he clean bowled Chris Silverwood.Aussie Matt Elliott brought up the fifty and along with Matt Wood looked well set. However with the score on 64 Wood chopped a slower ball from Johnson onto his stumps and once again the Cider fans and something to cheer about. The demise of Wood brought England batsman Michael Vaughan to the wicket, and the longer he stayed with Elliott, the Yorkshire cause appeared to gather momentum. A classic off drive from Elliott brought up the hundred, and Somerset were in desperate need of a wicket. The Aussie moved past his half century in the twenty fourth over to put further pressure on Somerset.By the halfway stage of their innings the White Rose county had scored 116 for 3, and seemed to be cruising, that was until Steffan Jones returned at the Pavilion End.With the second ball of his second over the Welshman trapped Vaughan LBW after he had put on 93 in twenty overs, but his departure on 157 had brought Somerset back into the game.Elliott had other ideas and gradually moved his side towards their target, bringing up his century in the 44th over, having faced 110 balls.Elliott remained at the wicket until the end and hit the winning runs to see his side home to a six wicket victory with 12 balls to spare and remained unbeaten on 128.Whilst the Yorkshire players were celebrating with their trophy the Somerset players sat on the grass looking disappointed and thinking about what might have been, as were their fans who started to drift away for the long return journey home.At the end of the match Jamie Cox said: "Of course we are bitterly disappointed because today was the basket that we put all of our eggs in and we lost. Now we really have to have a good three weeks and move heaven and earth to try to survive in the county championship which is hugely important to us."He continued: "This competition has been a great run for us during my time at the club. We are going places and I want to be part of it so will be back next season. I always said that I wanted to be here five years, and I have one more year to go."

Lincolnshire fail to take final wickets at Grantham

Lincolnshire failed to take the last two wickets which would have completed victory over Buckinghamshire at Grantham after making the visitors follow on.Chasing Lincs’ first innings score of 373 for seven – in which Richard Howitt was unbeaten on 153 – Bucks were bowled out for 165 and finished the second day on 41 for two in their second innings.Looking for early wickets on the morning of the third day, the Lincs bowlers were defied by Locke and Atkins who both hit half centuries and took the score to 145 for two at lunch. But in the second session, the introduction of Howitt to the attack brought immediate success with three wickets falling to the part-time bowler for just 11 runs.Bucks again dug in, Batty and Ward – playing in his first Minor Counties game – adding 71 before Howitt stuck again to dismiss Batty for 39. Two wickets for David Pipes brought hopes of a Lincs victory but Ward went on to make 63 not out and help Bucks to 298 for eight at the close of the match, giving the home side 12 points and the visitors seven.Howitt finished with four for 60 off 26 overs while Pipes took three for 73 off 18.
