Leeds: Frank McAvennie makes Patrick Bamford claim

Frank McAvennie has become the latest pundit to have a say on Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford and his ongoing injury issues, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Bamford’s foot problem

Bamford was involved in Jesse Marsch’s first four matchday squads as Whites boss, starting in wins over Norwich City and Wolves.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 28-year-old unfortunately suffered another foot problem at Molineux on March 18 which is set to keep him out for at least six weeks.

The striker did recently admit that he would look to return for the final two games of the season, should Leeds still find themselves in a relegation battle.

The Latest: McAvennie’s comments

McAvennie, talking to FI regarding Bamford, believes the Whites have a ‘real problem’ when it comes to the forward and urged the club to leave him out for the rest of the campaign.

“I think Leeds have a real problem with Bamford.

“He’s barely played this season. I think there is a problem there. He has got the summer to get over this.

“He needs that. Leeds need to draw a line under him and say ‘you’re done for the season’.

“If they rush him back and he plays the last few games of the season, that won’t help him.

“With an injury like this, you need a long uninterrupted recovery period. He shouldn’t rush back, that’s wrong.

“So he’s out for the season, for me. I think Leeds are safe so that’s not too bad news but he definitely think he has a real problem that the club need to fix.”

The Verdict: One more win…

Leeds have picked up on the pitch in recent weeks, taking 10 points from a possible 12 to leave them nine points clear of the drop.

They now sit on 33 points with six games remaining, so you’d like to think that one more win would all but guarantee a third season of Premier League football.

They face Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea before their final two games against Brighton and Brentford, so hopefully, Marsch can guide his club to one more win before the last two to avoid potentially relying on Bamford.

Kevin Pietersen snubbed by Hampshire

Hampshire have refused to include Kevin Pietersen for their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Kent on Sunday

Hampshire have refused to include Kevin Pietersen for their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Kent on Sunday despite a request from Andy Flower, the England coach, to allow him some cricket before the Test series against Pakistan.Last month Pietersen announced he would be leaving the county to move closer to his home in London. Now Hampshire have responded by opting to stick with their young players rather than risk breaking up a team purely for the sake of Pietersen’s match practice. It also means should Hampshire make Twenty20 finals day, which is being held at the Rose Bowl, that Pietersen won’t play even if freed from national duty for the showpiece occasion.Although the club insist Flower is comfortable with the decision – and it is debatable how much value a one-off 40-over hit would have been for Pietersen – it is a rare example of a county going against the ECB’s wishes. It leaves Pietersen, who has been low on form this season, as the only England player not to have any cricket before the first Test against Pakistan, at Trent Bridge, on July 29.”I would like to express my thanks to Andy Flower for agreeing to this sensible decision and wish him, Kevin and the rest of the England team the very best for their forthcoming internationals,” said Rod Bransgrove, the Hampshire chairman.”We have some excellent England aspirants here at Hampshire, including batsmen Michael Carberry, Jimmy Adams, Michael Lumb, Liam Dawson and James Vince. Whilst at different stages of their development, each of them have provided recent evidence of their ability to progress to represent England. It is our wish and responsibility to give them every possible opportunity to fulfil that potential.”Pietersen suffered a thigh strain during the final one-dayer against Australia but would have been rested anyway under England’s rotation policy. However, it means he won’t have batted in the middle for nearly a month when he faces a strong Pakistan attack including Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer at Trent Bridge. His form this season, since returning from the World Twenty20 where was Man of the Tournament, has been disappointing with poor returns against Bangladesh and Australia. However, the England captain Andrew Strauss, speaking before the Hampshire decision was made, remained confident Pietersen would return to his best.”Kevin has just turned 30 but he has got a lot of cricket left in him,” he said. “He has had a tough time, there is no doubt about that. He has not scored as many runs as he has done in the past. But he is a high-quality cricketer and he will come back and play match-winning innings for us.”There was a precedence for Hampshire’s move after Ian Bell was left out of a Friends Provident Trophy semi-final in 2007, ironically against Hampshire in a match where Pietersen did appear.

We should score over 550 to exert pressure – Dilshan

Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan feels that Sri Lanka will be able to exert pressure on India if they score over 550 in the first innings on the placid SSC wicket

Sa'adi Thawfeeq at the SSC26-Jul-2010Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan feels that Sri Lanka will be able to exert pressure on India if they score over 550 in the first innings on the placid SSC wicket. The hosts ended the opening day on a strong 312 for 2, with Tharanga Paranavitana and Kumar Sangakkara tormenting India with centuries yet again.”The second day is the best day to bat on the SSC pitch and we have our two most experienced batsmen at the crease – Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene,” Dilshan said. “If we score over 550 on this wicket we can put pressure on India and get a decision in our favour.”It is a superb wicket to bat on and I am disappointed I got out for 54. Tharanga and Sanga (Sangakkara) batted without taking any risks. We didn’t experience any problem batting on this wicket. After the first 3-4 overs the wicket favoured the batsmen. It is not an easy wicket for the fast bowlers.”Dilshan and Paranavitana shared an attacking opening stand of 99 in 18.1 overs after winning the toss to set Sri Lanka to a big score. Dilshan, who was out trying to force the pace off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha by giving a catch to short extra cover, said he had no plan to change his approach to batting.”I don’t plan to change the way I am playing now. I have scored 11 Test centuries batting in this manner. This is my seventh Test as an opener and I am averaging 63 (sic. 67). This is the way I bat but sometimes I think if I can slow myself down a little bit it would be better,” he said.Commenting on the match, Dilshan was confident that by the third and fourth days the two spinners, Ajantha Menis and Suraj Randiv, will come in to play.”We have confidence in the two quicks Dammika Prasad and Dilhara Fernando. They can bowl more than 140-plus (kph) and they can get some bounce and pace off this wicket. By the third and fourth days I am sure the spinners should do the job for us. We have confidence in these four bowlers,” Dilshan said.”It’s a big loss without Lasith [Malinga] who took seven wickets in the last Test, but Dilhara and Prasad have got an opportunity to cement their places in the team. I hope they make use of that advantage.”

AVFC must complete Neil transfer

Aston Villa have not been shy when it comes to identifying and signing players that they feel will improve their side, either as immediate first-team figures such as Danny Ings or young prospects that could work their way into becoming regular senior players in the future such as Louie Barry and Kerr Smith.

With a few days left until deadline day arrives, one fairly young player that Villa have been linked with that could come in and start making a claim to become a regular figure in Steven Gerrard’s team is Sunderland’s 20-year-old midfielder Dan Neil.

As a product of the Wearside club’s youth system, the midfielder has made a total of 42 appearances for Lee Johnson’s first team across all competitions, chipping in with three goals and eight assists along the way.

This season has seen the youngster play in all but one of Sunderland’s league games, highlighting how critical he is to the team.

As well as his goals and assists from midfield, Neil’s overall performances have also been note-worthy with WhoScored listing the Englishman as the fifth-highest rated Sunderland player to have played more than one league game so far this season with a rating of 6.86/10.

Despite it still being early days in his playing career, the Sunderland maestro has already been likened to a young version of Premier League legend Michael Carrick by talkSPORT commentator Ian Danter, which is a massive compliment given how highly regarded the former Manchester United midfielder is.

With that in mind, the opportunity to unearth the next Carrick at Villa should be a very exciting prospect for Gerrard and therefore persuade the Midlands club to launch a move to sign the Sunderland starlet, who has been labelled as a “diamond” by Phil Parkinson in the past.

Given how important he is to Johnson’s side, who are pushing for promotion back to the Championship, Villa may struggle getting them to agree a deal for Neil to leave before the end of the month.

However, with the lure of potentially playing in the Premier League with a big club like Villa under the management of one of the best midfield players of all time, this could be a very tempting next step for the Sunderland star should he feel like he’s ready to start a new chapter in his career.

Dejan Kulusevski: Spurs eye Alli successor

Dele Alli’s time at Tottenham Hotspur could soon be coming to an end after the club were linked with a move for a new attacking midfielder…

What’s the word?

According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia), Spurs will battle their north London rivals Arsenal to sign the Juventus outcast during the January transfer window.

It was the Lilywhites’ sporting director Fabio Paratici who signed him for the Serie A giants, so they could well be leading the race to seal his signature, in which Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich are also keen.

The Bianconeri appear to be willing to sell the 20-cap Sweden international for a minimum of €35m (£30m) to €40m (£34m) next month.

Bye-bye Alli?

The 21-year-old dynamo, who is capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, has dropped down the pecking order at the Allianz Stadium under Massimiliano Allegri this season.

Just four of his 21 appearances this term have been starts, whilst he has provided one goal and four assists from just 724 minutes of action, per Transfermarkt.

Last season, he enjoyed a lot of success as he delivered 14 direct goal contributions across 47 matches. What made that even more impressive was the fact that he did so whilst playing in at least seven different roles. A very versatile talent, indeed.

If that isn’t enough to suggest that he’s a perfect fit for Antonio Conte and his system, then perhaps praise from others in and around the game is.

“Kulusevski is an explosive player who likes to challenge his direct opponent,” once claimed ex-Sweden striker Marcus Allback to The Sun. “He likes to dribble with the ball, play the short passes and he is very good on the through balls. He’s quick and would cause a lot of trouble for most of the teams he plays.”

Whilst experienced Italian coach Pierpaolo Bisoli believes there are shades of Mohamed Salah about him “He has incredible physical strength. He reminds me of a young Salah for the way he shakes off opponents in the first ten metres,” he said.

On the above evidence, the fact that he is versatile and hugely dynamic, Kulusevski could well be a better fit for Conte at Spurs than Alli, whose best position is still undetermined.

Furthermore, there have been reports suggesting that Tottenham could finally be open to selling the 25-year-old amid his long-term struggles on the pitch.

Once dubbed a “freak of a talent” by former Lilywhites star Darren Anderton, Alli has failed to hit the heights of his past glory, managing only one goal and one assist this season.

Therefore, the £27m-rated dynamo could offer Conte and co a lot more than the Englishman, so if they are able to secure a move for him in January, then the club absolutely must do all they can to pull it over the line.

Spurs’ new boss could finally bin Alli with a move for the exciting Swedish sensation.

SNGPL thrash Stallions to take title

Scorecard
The victorious SNGPL side strike a pose after winning the final•Pakistan Cricket Board

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited humbled Sialkot Stallions by 132 runs in an extremely one-sided RBS Cup final at the Gaddafi Stadium. The allround effort began the moment SNGPL won the toss and decided to make first use of the conditions. Ali Waqas and Raza Ali Dar could not convert their starts into significant contributions, but Naeemuddin and Misbah-ul-Haq faced no such problems.Their 111-run stand made light of the relatively early losses and set the tone for a big score. Naeemuddin dropped anchor with a 105-ball 84, giving Misbah the license to punish the bowling. Misbah exacted full toll on the Stallions’ attack, with Nayyer Abbas and Adeel Malik suffering the most. The SNGPL captain remained unbeaten on 119, off 109 balls with nine fours and a six, as the innings closed at a strong 284.The Stallions’ chase never took flight, and the loss of wickets at regular intervals did their cause no good. Kamran Younis and Majid Jahangir were the only batsmen to cross 30 in their hapless effort. In the event, the SNGPL bowlers filled their boots, and Imran Ali emerged the pick of the lot, with 3 for 28 before it all ended in the 40th over.

Everton linked with Kieran Trippier move

Everton reportedly have their eye on signing a player in the upcoming January transfer window who could help them to both strengthen at the back and provide a greater attacking threat.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from 90min, the Toffees are one of the Premier League clubs alongside Newcastle United, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa interested in signing Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier in January.

Throughout his career, the Englishman has made a total of 426 senior appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 78 assists with clubs such as Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur, Barnsley and Atletico across all competitions, highlighting his attacking and creative abilities on the pitch.

On the international stage, the 31-year-old – who is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt – has made 35 appearances for England.

Last season saw Trippier prove to be a crucial figure for Diego Simeone’s side in their title-winning La Liga campaign by averaging 1.3 key passes, 2.2 tackles, 1.7 clearances and 1.4 interceptions per game, highlighting his ability to create chances going forward and be a tough defensive opponent.

In terms of a potential move to Everton, with suggestions that Lucas Digne could be on his way out of the club in January after a reported falling out with Benitez, Trippier could be a suitable replacement for the Frenchman given that he has played several times for England at left-back and could bring a lot of top-level experience and talent to the team.

Labelled as a player with “outstanding quality” on the pitch by England manager Gareth Southgate, Trippier could help Farhad Moshiri to fix a potentially big issue at Everton if Digne does leave in January as a result of his apparent spat with Benitez and decides that he doesn’t want to continue playing for the Toffees.

Watson claims Gayle 'baited me'

Shane Watson has justified his exuberant celebration of Chris Gayle’s dismissal in Perth by saying he was baited by the captain. Watson was fined 15% of his match fee for his roaring celebration in the second-innings on Saturday and has been criticised for his behaviour, with Geoff Lawson likening it to a four-year-old’s tantrum.”There was a bit of build up to it, so it’s always nice to get Chris Gayle out, he’s obviously one of the most devastating batsmen in the world at the moment,” Watson told AAP. “He definitely let me know that he was keen for me to come on to bowl leading up to that, so it was very nice to get him out first ball.”That was the catalyst for me celebrating the way I did … I know there’s a line and I was extremely happy to get him out, I normally don’t celebrate to that extent when I get someone out. But when he baits me, talking about wanting me to come on to bowl to be able to take me down, it’s always very nice to get the upper hand.”Gayle said Watson over-reacted but was happy “to move on and let bygones be bygones”. “Watson didn’t actually say anything to me,” Gayle wrote in his Daily Telegraph column. “He just kept screaming in my direction.”He has a bit of a temper and is pretty emotional so he was probably just letting it all out. Each player is different and getting me out came at a crucial time in an important Test match. There is no doubt he over-reacted but I am prepared to move on and let bygones be bygones.”Watson did admit his antics were over the top and they added to a busy Test for the match referee Chris Broad. Sulieman Benn, the left-arm spinner, was banned for two ODIs for his exchanges with the fined Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin during Australia’s first innings.

Paul Collingwood 50-50 for Newlands – Andy Flower

Paul Collingwood is rated 50-50 to be fit for the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town

Andrew McGlashan in Cape Town01-Jan-2010Paul Collingwood is rated 50-50 to be fit for the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town, after testing out his injured left index finger for the first time since he dislocated it during practice prior to the fourth day’s play at Durban. If Collingwood doesn’t recover in time Michael Carberry, the Hampshire left-hander, is the likely replacement and would make his debut just four days after arriving from the UK. However, England coach Andy Flower remains optimistic that Collingwood will be available after he managed a more extensive work-out than had been planned during the nets session at Newlands.”He did more today than I thought he’d do,” Flower said. “I told him to take it easy, and we’d test it out properly tomorrow. He had a net, did some fielding and a bit of slip-catching and his finger felt better than he thought it might. That’s positive news, but we’ll do a final fitness test on him tomorrow. I’d say at the moment it’s probably 50-50.”Collingwood has been one of England’s in-form players throughout the tour and was named Man of the Series for the one-day internationals. In the Tests he made 91 at Durban to follow his match-saving 26 off 99 balls at Centurion, where he also contributed 50 in the first innings. After a poor finish to the Ashes series, Collingwood’s place was coming under scrutiny, but the management forced him to rest for a couple of ODIs against Australia and he returned revived. He was outstanding during the Champions Trophy, proving a revelation with his previously unseen powers of six-hitting in the middle order, and has since carried that form forward. He will be tough to replace.”What Collingwood has done recently is he’s used to good effect some of the vast amount of experience he’s got over the last six or seven years,” Flower said. “He’s repaying England for all that investment in him. If he goes out, we’ll lose some of that experience.”But you gain in another way if the debutant comes in and kicks off his international career. We’re not worried. If he can’t play, he can’t play. We’ll get on with it.Carberry was part of the England Performance Programme based in Pretoria until shortly before Christmas where he scored a hundred against a Gauteng team. There also remains the option of drafting in Luke Wright, but he has slipped down the pecking order after England’s successful policy of playing six frontline batsmen.”He’s [Carberry] been scoring runs out here in South Africa, so we’re quite comfortable with that situation,” Flower said. “The way he batted in the nets this morning, I’d feel very confident when he strode out to the middle. The allrounder option is always there, has been for the first two Tests and is again for this one.Flower’s opposite number, Mickey Arthur, has been doing some hasty research on Carberry in case he makes his debut on Sunday but added Collingwood will be tough to replace. “I’ve done my homework on Carberry last night,” he said. “If he plays we have had a look at him. He looks a very good player, very leg side and tries to score there a lot.”Collingwood has been instrumental, he has played unbelievably well through the whole tour. He’s almost the heartbeat in the middle order and it will be a loss. But England have played some very good cricket so I’m sure they are comfortable that they won’t weaken their team.”Although England’s starting XI remains uncertain, one message coming from Flower is crystal clear. The team won’t be getting carried away after Durban. It’s the message he – and Andrew Strauss – preached after the Ashes and despite the crushing nature of the victory two days ago nothing has changed.”It was a confidence-building performance in Durban,” Flower said in typically understated fashion. “Our bowlers did a good job again. It was nice to see some of the batsmen go on to substantial scores. That changed the momentum of the game.”All round, it was a great performance from our side. We’re one up – a great position to be in – but we’re only halfway through a Test series. That means there’s a lot of hard work to do in this Cape Town Test. But I know that our guys are looking forward to the challenge of taking South Africa on here.”I think the guys’ feet are firmly on the ground. We reflected well on the Durban victory, but now they’ve drawn a line under that.”
