West Ham: Moyes must axe Benrahma vs Genk

West Ham United can put one foot in the knockout stages of the Europa League with another victory against Genk later this evening.

David Moyes’ side travel to Belgium with a 100% record in Group H, where they hold a six-point advantage over all three remaining teams. And they will head into kickoff in inspired form.

The Irons thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to cement their place inside the Premier League’s top four. They are now level on points with defending champions Manchester City, who they knocked out of the Carabao Cup this time last week.

Moyes will be tasked with the conundrum of resting players, whilst also maintaining their impressive performance levels, so it will be intriguing to see his lineup.

One name that could be facing the axe tonight is Said Benrahma after a mixed showing at Villa Park.

The £22.5m-rated Algerian winger delivered an assist for Declan Rice’s strike but that was more down to the English powerhouse as he drilled a scorcher home from long range.

Aside from that, he offered very little and it’s been a similar case over the last few games as his form has tailed off compared to the way in which he began the 2021/22 campaign.

Benrahma kickstarted the season with two goals and two assists against Newcastle United and Leicester City but in the subsequent eight outings, he has only scored one goal and provided one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

Recently, The West Ham Way’s Dave Walker described the wide man as “most exciting player” the club have had since Dimitri Payet, also dubbing him a “match-winner.”

Elsewhere, the 5 foot 8 wizard was once dubbed a “true magician” by former Nice teammate Lorenzo Vinci.

However, on Sunday, he was hooked after just 68 minutes, having managed only three more touches of the ball (31) than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (28), which goes to show his lack of influence on the game.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old dynamo failed to deliver a single accurate cross, made just one dribble from three attempts (33.3%) and won only three of his eight battles (37.5%), via SofaScore.

This sort of lightweight showing typifies the inconsistencies in his game but that’s understandable as there’s still some element of adapting to the Premier League, as well as other players such as Rice and Jarrod Bowen elevating their games even more.

It could be wise to bench him to spark a reaction and also hand an opportunity to players like Nikola Vlasic, who too need to impress the manager outside of top-flight action.

Moyes must be ruthless and axe Benrahma in Belgium tonight.

O time não sentiu a ausência do titular Carli.

5,5
Igor Rabello

5,0
Rodrigo Lindoso

4,0
Guilherme
Teve a primeira – e grande – chance do Botafogo.

Man Utd fans slam Shaw vs Man City

Many Manchester United fans have been left slamming the display of Luke Shaw at home to Manchester City in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

The England international left-back endured a torrid first half, as did the whole of United’s defence, as Pep Guardiola’s men went into half-time 2-0 up thanks to an own goal from Eric Bailly and one from Bernardo Silva.

Shaw was guilty of letting Silva ghost in behind him to poke the ball home for the second goal, which then gave the Red Devils an almost impossible battle in the second half.

The former Southampton man lost out on two of his duels, and also failed to record a single dribble or interception in the game, while losing possession of the ball on no fewer than on 12 separate occasions (SofaScore).

He was taken off injured for Alex Telles with around 20 minutes to go in the match, and perhaps may benefit from a spell of rest if that issue rules him out of England duty.

These MUFC supporters slammed his performance on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he has been ‘awful’ for the last few games:

West Ham fans hail Dawson display

As West Ham United breezed past Genk at the London Stadium this evening, taking yet more control of Group H, many Irons supporters were blown away by the performance and contribution of defender Craig Dawson.

David Moyes’ men took a giant leap towards finishing top by beating the Belgian giants this evening.

Indeed, they have gone six points clear with their victory and, as per the new Europa League format, potentially finishing as group victors will guarantee West Ham a spot straight into the last 16.

Moyes rested a fair few first teamers tonight with the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko, Nikola Vlasic, Alphonse Areola and Dawson all coming in after the weekend victory at Everton.

Among all of these fresh faces, it was the latter man who garnered real praise on Twitter for his display – especially considering he opened the floodgates with his towering first half header.

He was also among the highest-rated West Ham players on SofaScore and it’s safe to say his ‘massive’ display didn’t go unnoticed.

Boon wants fellow selectors to trust current squad

David Boon feels one shouldn’t read too much into Bryce McGain’s performance in Potchefstroom © Getty Images

David Boon, the selector travelling with Australia’s squad in SouthAfrica, believes his panel must show faith in a core group of playersduring Australia’s rebuilding phase. Boon and his fellow selectorshave a few key decisions to make ahead of Thursday’s first Test inJohannesburg, with the make-up of the attack the major issue at avenue that traditionally suits the fast men.Ben Hilfenhaus and Doug Bollinger both bowled well in the tour matchbut unless Australia use a four-man pace attack one is likely to missout, while a call also needs to be made on the squad’s spin stocks.Whatever the selectors come up with, Boon wants the four-man selection panel toshow the same sort of backing that he and his fellow players receivedduring the mid 1980s, when a rebuilding phase led to the discovery ofstars like Steve Waugh and Craig McDermott.”The selectors back then were fantastic,” Boon said in Johannesburg.”When we went through that period they said, ‘right we can’t keepchopping and changing.’ They basically picked 16 or 18 guys and hadthem in their minds and for the next three or four years we all playedand we knew if we missed we weren’t going to be flicked.”It gave Billy [McDermott] the chance to improve as a young19-year-old bowler, Steve was very up and down through those formativeyears, but they stuck with him because everybody knew there was talentthere. We stuck together and I think we are going to do the same here.I firmly believe we have young players who are going to step up to themark and do really well as long as we are patient.”His comments came as Australia built up to the Wanderers match, whichwill be the 15th Test in a row in which they have failed to field thesame side in consecutive Tests. Boon said it was not a venue wherespin was likely to play a major role although he felt Bryce McGain’sstruggles in Potchefstroom, where he took 2 for 126 from 19 overs, should not be held against him.”I don’t think you can take one performance into account,” Boon said.”You look at the balance of the team and how we want to approach thisgame. We’ve seen in our domestic cricket that he’s a really finebowler and on that sort of wicket he might have looked a bit ordinary. It didn’t move too far off the straight and narrow for him and the guy[Imran Tahir] who bowled for them as well, our guys played him prettyeasily so I wouldn’t take too much out of that.”However, Boon was impressed by the efforts of the part-time offspinnerMarcus North, who collected a career-best 6 for 69 in the secondinnings when McGain was off the field with a stomach bug. It will bedifficult for the selectors to leave North out of the first Test aftera performance that also included two half-centuries, but they need todecide if he is capable of being a frontline spin option or simply abackup.”He’s handy, we’ve known that for a long time,” Boon said. “He does arole and he does it well and I thought that even though they werebeing aggressive he landed it well so they didn’t get away with it. Aswe saw with a lot of batters, clearing the pickets wasn’t hard and hemade it hard and took those wickets plus a couple of legit ones.”If North plays at No. 6, it’s difficult to see where Andrew McDonaldcould squeeze into the side despite being the incumbent from theSydney Test. The selectors are unlikely to name a starting XI untilWednesday.

Nayyer Abbas struggled for an hour to make 10 and Mohammad Ayub managed only 4, both batsmen falling to medium-pacer Yasir Ali. Overnight batsman Ayaz Tasawwar resisted with a half-century before being caught behind off Yasir to leave Sialkot at 108 for 6.Haris Sohail, who has been one of Sialkot’s highest run-getters this season, and Bilawal Bhatti however ensured there was no further drama, taking Sialkot through to victory.

Nuno ‘hopeful’ of Son and Bergwijn return

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has provided an update on the fitness of Son Heung-Min and Steven Bergwijn.

The Lowdown: Growing list of absences

Having topped the Premier League table at the end of August after three straight 1-0 victories, Spurs were heavily defeated at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Eric Dier was forced off injured in the first half and Japhet Tanganga was sent off as Palace scored three times in the final 15 minutes to hand Nuno his first league defeat as Spurs manager.

Tottenham were without a bunch of first team players, with Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso, Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon, Son and Bergwijn all missing the trip to Selhurst Park.

The Latest: Nuno hoping to have duo back for Chelsea clash

As per Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, the manager has at least hinted that the Korean and Dutch forwards could feature in next week’s clash at home to in-form Chelsea.

Nuno claimed that the duo will “hopefully improve and be available for the game next week” after the defeat at Palace, whilst Romero, Lo Celso and Sanchez are likely to miss the clash as they are only due to arrive in London on Saturday, just one day before the match.

The Spurs boss also said: “I believe that we have a good squad and enough quality and talent to overcome all the situations.”

The Verdict: Not the time to panic

Tottenham’s defeat at Palace has stopped them in their tracks, but remember that they won their first three league fixtures of the season and have bolstered their squad whilst keeping Harry Kane.

There are certainly areas for improvement for Spurs, but they have still made a good start to the season and having Son and Bergwijn back for the Chelsea game would provide a lift to the squad.

The Dutchman has previous in terms of scoring against elite opposition, memorably netting against Manchester City on his north London debut, while Son had the second-highest tally of goal contributions (27) at the club in 2020/21. Therefore, Nuno’s cautious optimism that the pair might be fine to feature against the Blues is quite pleasing to hear.

Michael Ball urges Everton to win race for Denis Zakaria

Michael Ball has called for Everton for bolster their midfield by winning the race for Denis Zakaria.

Rafa Benitez got his Toffees reign off to the perfect start by securing a 3-1 win over Southampton on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

The ex-Liverpool and Newcastle United chief, who was appointed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor in June, has made three signings since taking charge.

Andros Townsend joined after his Crystal Palace contract expired, while Demarai Gray has returned to his homeland following a stint with Bayer Leverkusen.

Asmir Begovic will provide competition for Jordan Pickford, having moved from Bournemouth, but former Everton left-back Ball feels Benitez must strengthen his midfield options ahead of the transfer window closing at the end of the month.

According to German media outlet Bild, the Toffees are in the running to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defensive midfielder Zakaria, who would add a real presence to their midfield with his 6 ft 3 stature. The report suggests Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also courting the £27m-rated Switzerland international.

The 24-year-old made 32 appearances for the Bundesliga side last term and Ball thinks he would be the perfect signing.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Ball said: “He’s 24 and got good experience in the Bundesliga, which is a good league to learn and develop your abilities.

“If that’s a deal Everton can get over the line, I’m all for it.”

Explosive Campbell thumps Mumbai

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Ryan Campbell blasted an unbeaten 92 from 51 balls to ease Ahmedabad to victory © ICL

The chase was over in a blink. Ryan Campbell hit an explosive half-century in front of a boisterous home crowd to charge the Ahmedabad Rockets to a crushing win over the hapless Mumbai Champs, who had dawdled to 130.”To just get past the first ball was a start for me,” said Campbell, also Man of the Match, after failing in his first two innings. The relief was palpable. And what an innings.Campbell, an explosive batsman from Western Australia, began the carnage after two quiet overs. He slammed Johan van der Wath to fine leg and the extra-cover boundary after fellow opener Parvez Aziz picked up two fours in the same over. Campbell then turned his attention to Michael Kasprowicz, hitting him first over mid-off before clearing long-off. He wasn’t done, yet. In the fifth over, he hit Ranjit Khirid all around the ground in a 15-run over. After five overs the score read 54 for 0 and though Aziz fell just after, slogging across the line, Campbell batted on fluently. He slowed down temporarily, having raced to 46 from 18 balls, but upped the tempo again to finish unbeaten on 92 from 51 balls. Victory was achieved with such ease that Mumbai were again exposed as the weakest team in the tournament.Even in the first game, where Mumbai stretched it to the last over, the quality was below par. It was another average performance from them today. The start set the tone: Robin Morris miscued a pull, Nathan Astle flicked a slower one straight to deep square leg and Raviraj Patil ran himself out. Taufeeq Umar picked up the odd boundary and Hasan Raza dealt in singles but they couldn’t create any momentum. Ahmedabad’s Bhima Rao had a great day in the field, taking four catches and effecting a direct-hit run out. Rao, identified by the ICL’s high performance director Jock Campbell as the fittest player at the preceding physical training camp, lived up to the high praise. It took the entry of van der Wath at the end of the 16th over to breathe some life into the game. In the 18th over, he pulled Heath Streak for two fours and launched one over long-on and really exploded in the last over of the innings against the same bowler. The first one, a full delivery, was dismissed over long-on, the second, a slower one, was carted to cow corner before van der Wath finished off with two more sixes. He finished on 41 from 15 balls, with four sixes. Post van der Wath’s arrival, the score jumped from 79 for 6 to 130 but it was too little. The ICL caravan moved to a new venue today but encountered an old problem. The light towers crashed for the third time in the tournament, holding up play for 45 minutes. Luckily, no overs were lost, and the partisan crowd thoroughly enjoyed their team’s domination.
