Phillips, Keita and six players who could leave Liverpool in the January transfer window

The Reds have already added Cody Gakpo to their ranks, but who could be on their way out of Anfield this month?

With one signing already completed, Liverpool’s January transfer business is well underway. Cody Gakpo’s £44 million ($52m) switch from PSV caught many fans by surprise, as the Reds added yet another young, promising attacker to their ranks.

It remains to be seen whether that is the last of the incomings at Anfield in the winter window, with the club’s need for a midfield refresh becoming more apparent with each game.

In terms of outgoings, however, we should expect some movement between now and January 31.

GOAL runs through some of the players who could be on their way out this winter…

    Nat Phillips

Liverpool have done pretty well moving on fringe players in recent years, raising money through the sales of players such as Neco Williams, Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Phillips, though, has been retained, partly out of necessity and partly because the Reds have been unable to find a club willing to pay their asking price.

At 25, the centre-back is surely ready to go and play regular football, and though he is adored by Jurgen Klopp, his staff and his team-mates, there is an acceptance within Liverpool that he is worth more than being merely a fifth-choice option.

Whether he moves on this month will depend on what kind of offers materialise. He is valued at £10m ($12m) and has had interest from the likes of Bournemouth and Fulham in the past.

A loan move, with an option to buy, is the likeliest outcome.

    Naby Keita

Are these the final months of Keita’s Liverpool career? As of January 1, the Guinea international is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club, with the Reds unable to agree an extension with the 27-year-old.

Keita has recently returned to first-team action after a lengthy injury lay-off, and with Liverpool’s midfield looking weak all season, he could well find himself back in the team before too long.

It seems unlikely, then, that he would be sold in this window, especially with interested clubs knowing they could land him for free in a few months’ time. The transfer market, however, can be a strange place, and desperation can make clubs do strange things.

If an offer arrived, Liverpool would have to consider it.

    Caoimhin Kelleher

Klopp believes Kelleher is “the best No.2 goalie in the world”, but what happens if somebody wants to make him their No.1?

At 24, the Ireland international has made fewer than 30 senior professional appearances, and though he can hardly argue at being deputy to Alisson Becker, he probably is one of the few genuinely saleable assets within Liverpool’s squad at present.

It would be surprising if he were sold in January, but it would certainly not be surprising if he looked to move on in the summer. And he should have no shortage of suitors if so.

    Jake Cain

Liverpool managed to get a couple of young midfielders out on loan in the summer, with Tyler Morton joining Blackburn Rovers and Leighton Clarkson moving to Aberdeen.

Both have done well, but left behind was Cain, a 21-year-old who has been forced to content himself with Under-23s football after a successful spell in League Two with Newport County last season.

He won’t ever become a first-team regular at Anfield, but the versatile, left-footed schemer is good enough to have a Football League career, and it would be a surprise if he did not move on in January, most likely on loan.

South Africa domestic structure to be examined

A committee tasked with undertaking a comprehensive review of South Africa’s domestic cricket structures will not look into the Ram Slam T20 competition, which will undergo a separate analysis in the hope of increasing its commercial appeal. The committee’s focus, therefore, will be more intensely trained on the second-tier provincial semi-professional competitions, which are believed to have been neglected in recent seasons.South Africa’s domestic structure is split into two sections: the professional franchise structure which consists of six teams and a semi-professional tournament which includes 13 provincial teams and Namibia. Both divisions play a first-class, List A and 20-over competition although the franchise’s first-class fixtures are held over four days and the provincial teams play over three.”This is something that has been a serious concern for people involved in management, because we lose a lot of players who don’t want to play in the semi-professional structures,” an insider told ESPNcricinfo. “From the time players finish school to the time they get franchise contracts, they can be in limbo. We want to look at how we can incorporate those players.”Both sections will be reviewed by a different team to the one that has been appointed to conduct an investigation into the national sides which is much smaller. While the national teams committee is a four-person panel, the domestic review team includes 14 people, headed by the director of strategy at auditing firm EY, Michael Lalor. It includes CSA’s national academy coach, Shukri Conrad, two franchise coaches, Warriors’ Malibongwe Maketa and Titans’ Rob Walter, two national selectors Ashwell Prince and Hussein Manack, one franchise captain Omphile Ramela, a selection of commentators and a journalist.”Nobody really knows how they came up with this group, but we are all waiting to see what they come up with,” the source said. While CSA has not put a time frame on the review, the panel are expected to reveal their findings by mid-year and it is expected to focus heavily on the provincial structures.”One idea that has already come up is that the provinces play less 50-over cricket and more T20s. There is also some talk of increasing the number of teams and the number of contracted semi-professional players,” the insider said.Currently, the provincial sides play 10 first-class, six 50-over matches a season and four T20s a season and the imbalance could be corrected with this review. Provincial teams contract seven players but the number could increase to 10.A franchise expansion from six to eight teams has also been mooted although if that was to be approved it would only happen in the 2017-18 season and not next summer. Kimberley, East London and Potchefstroom are believed to be in the running as franchise bases.Instead, next season will be the one in which CSA hopes to increase the impact of their T20 tournament, which lags behind some of the other global leagues. The Ram Slam has routinely struggled to attract big names both because of the weakening Rand and the scheduling – it often clashes with South Africa’s own international fixtures.Next season, CSA will make national players available for the tournament and have moved a home Test against Sri Lanka from December to January to accommodate for this. They are also looking to sign several international stars and “find ways to commercialise the competition, because it can’t be done in any other format.”

Lot of fun and joy – Ronchi

The game-changing 267-run stand that sent records tumbling was born of enjoyment and good vibes, protagonists Luke Ronchi and Grant Elliott said, after the pair was instrumental in earning New Zealand a 3-1 lead in the series against Sri Lanka

‘Just couldn’t get the strike off Ronchi’ – Elliott

The game-changing 267-run stand that sent records tumbling was born of enjoyment and good vibes, protagonists Luke Ronchi and Grant Elliott said, after the pair was instrumental in earning New Zealand a 3-1 lead in the series against Sri Lanka. The team was on track for a mediocre score, at 93 for 5, when the pair came together, but they both scored quickly, then began to launch a sustained attack that transformed the outlook of the innings.Ronchi hit his maiden international ton and finished on 170 not out from 99 balls, while Elliott scored his second ODI ton, to remain unbeaten on 104 from 96.”It was really fun to be out there with Ronchs. I was sitting at the non-striker’s trying to get the strike off him, but I couldn’t – he kept hitting fours and sixes all the time,” Elliott said. “I really enjoyed watching his innings, and it was great to have a fellow Wellingtonian there to celebrate the hundred with me, and also to celebrate his first hundred.”Ronchi said the pair did not put pressure on themselves, despite the dire match situation when they came together. That manifested in a faster scoring rate than is common in such a situation, and an eventual total that was highly unlikely to be reeled in.”When we first started the innings we thought we’d just bat for a while and get through that little period when the ball was still doing a bit,” Ronchi said. “After that we were pretty relaxed about the whole situation and enjoyed the position we were in. Both of us were scoring quite freely and getting what we wanted out of the bowlers.”You start playing shots and things happen without you even thinking of it, and then you know you’re flowing nicely and in the zone. We were both definitely in that zone at some stage and continued on. It was a lot of fun in the whole situation. There was a lot of joy in getting the hundred and pushing on and winning.”Elliott was the more measured of the two batsmen, often choosing to rotate the strike, rather than match Ronchi stroke for stroke. He has played in a similar vein for New Zealand in the past, and suggested he would continue to shelve his more aggressive domestic avatar away in national colours, at least until the last few overs of the innings.”I think I was very fortunate with the way Ronchs was playing. I could just stay on my end and push ones and get us into a good position. That’s my role – to build a foundation from where we can strike. We were fortunate enough to get into a position when we could say: ‘Let’s both have a go now.’ Ronchs was having a go from ball one anyway.”I’ve been playing a different sort of role for Wellington, where I come in at the end and give it a whack. It seems like whenever I play for the Black Caps, my role is to come in and rotate the strike and strike as close to a 100 as I can, especially if we’ve lost three quick ones. In Nelson I probably gave it away, but I was there for the fun bit today with Ronchs at the end, and that’s where you want to be. Hitting a few boundaries was satisfying.”The unbeaten stand was a world record for the sixth wicket, and second highest for any wicket for New Zealand. Elliott said it was precisely the collective focus on the needs of the team, rather than personal milestones, that has allowed New Zealand to make such major strides in their cricket.”We didn’t even know what the world record is,” he said. “I thought I was on 98 when Luke came to me and told me I only needed a single to get a hundred. I think that that’s an indication of what the team environment is like. It’s not about the milestones for individuals out there. It’s about getting as many runs as we can get as a team. At the end of it, we’ve got some accolades which is great. We’ll share some beers tonight and look at the world record – whatever it may be, and be pretty proud that it’s contributed to a win.”

Auckland battle to win bowler-dominated contest

The bowlers held sway at Cobham Oval, where neither team passed 300 in four innings and Auckland chased a target of 211 on the final day

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Oct-2014
ScorecardThe bowlers held sway at Cobham Oval in Whangarei, where neither team passed 300 in four innings and Auckland chased a target of 211 on the final day to beat a depleted Northern Districts by five wickets.Northern Districts were missing fast bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee, and batsman Dean Brownlie, all of whom were on New Zealand duty against South Africa. They were also without Kane Williamson, who is recovering from an injured wrist, and they struggled after choosing to bat. Auckland reduced them to 82 for 5 before half-centuries from Mitchell Santner and Scott Kuggeleijn lifted the score past 200. Northern Districts were dismissed for 253 in 83 overs early on the second day.Auckland also struggled at the start of their first innings, losing three wickets cheaply before four batsmen – Anaru Kitchen, Colin Munro, Brad Cachopa and Donovan Grobbelaar – made half-centuries to give their side the lead. None of them were able to kick on and make a hundred though. Auckland had first slipped from 147 for 3 to 149 for 6, and then they went from 261 for 6 to 284 all out. Graeme Aldridge claimed the last three wickets in hurry to limit Auckland’s lead to 31 and finish with a five-wicket haul.Northern Districts made a bright start to their second innings on the third day. Their openers wiped out the deficit during a partnership of 90, with Anton Devcich going on to make 64. And then the collapse came. Northern Districts lost four wickets to slip to 144 for 4, and after a brace of 40s from Bharat Popli and BJ Watling, they crumbled again – from 212 for 5 to 241 all out – setting Auckland a target of 211.Auckland lost their captain Rob Nicol early in the chase but a 90 from opener Jeet Raval and a half-century from No. 3 Carl Cachopa put the innings firmly on track for victory.

Pacemen put Yorkshire on the brink

It is probably fitting that Yorkshire should have been made to work for the win that will seal their 32nd Championship title

George Dobell at Trent Bridge11-Sep-2014
ScorecardRyan Sidebottom took a wicket with the first ball of Nottinghamshire’s second innings•Getty ImagesIt is probably fitting that Yorkshire should have been made to work for the win that will seal their 32nd Championship title. This competition is a test of stamina, resilience and squad depth as much as it is skill and, on another painfully slow Trent Bridge surface, Yorkshire were obliged to display all those qualities against a Nottinghamshire side that has, belatedly, shown a bit of fight. They will go into the final day of this game requiring five more wickets to secure the trophy.Few will begrudge Yorkshire this success. They are, without much doubt, the finest first-class side in the domestic game and they continue to play a significant role in the development of England players. Nine of the 11 representing them in this game developed through the club’s system and the two who did not – Gary Ballance and Jack Brooks – have improved substantially since joining them.It will be a victory for some of those behind the scenes as much as those on the pitch, though. Jason Gillespie, who arrived in 2011 and has seen his side lose only three Championship games in that period, is one notable contributor, while Martyn Moxon, the director of cricket who continues to coach the batsmen, is another and so to Andrew Gale, the club captain who is absent from this game through suspension. But equally the likes of Colin Graves, the executive chairman who has kept the club afloat through bank rolling them to the tune of £10m, and Ian Dews, the academy coach who has worked with many of this team in their developmental years, should share in this triumph while Kevin Sharp, now with Worcestershire, and Paul Farbrace, now with England, deserve credit. It is a club that, in development terms at least, offers a template for others to follow. For a while it seemed the title would be decided on the third day. By the time Nottinghamshire subsided to 140 for 9 in their first innings, it appeared they would offer no resistance at all. If Michael Lumb, adjudged leg before to one that looked high and wide, was unfortunate, the likes of Riki Wessels, prodding at one he could easily have left, were far more culpable. Luke Fletcher and Gary Keedy both fell to reckless slogs. It was soft cricket. But Chris Read is made of sterner stuff. And, with the ball soft and the pitch slow, he helped add 63 for the 10th wicket with Harry Gurney, forcing Brooks back into the attack and showing that, had Nottinghamshire’s top-order showed just a bit more fight, they might have been able to secure a draw. As we have seen rather often in recent months, even tailenders can be hard to dismiss at Trent Bridge once the pitch has lost all its life.Still, Joe Root had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on and, with his attack armed with a new ball, they soon made inroads into the Nottinghamshire second innings. Steven Mullaney was leg before first ball, playing for inswing that was not there, before Lumb prodded half-forward to one angled across him on off stump.Had Adam Lyth and then Ballance held on to outside edges offered by Alex Hales (on four) and James Taylor (on one), both of whom were guilty of driving at balls they could, and should, have left well alone, the match could have finished in a rush.Read compares stumping to mankading

Chris Read, the Nottinghamshire captain, was left unimpressed after Samit Patel was victim of an unusual stumping.

Patel was dismissed after Yorkshire keeper Jonny Bairstow, standing up to the medium-pace of Steven Patterson, dislodged the bails at least a second or two after taking the ball. Noticing that Patel might lift his back leg, Bairstow waited for him to do so and then pounced to complete the stumping.

But the move left Read, the most experienced keeper on the domestic circuit, underwhelmed.

“It’s not something I’ve ever done in 16 years of first-class cricket,” Read said. “I wouldn’t necessarily be too comfortable with it. But each to their own, it’s certainly within the Laws of the game. But it’s always a questionable one. How long should you hold the ball before it’s dead?

“Samit will learn from that and make sure his foot is always planted in the crease. You can probably liken it to the whole mankading situation. It’s within the Laws of the game, but people have a different opinion on it, it’s pretty subjective.”

Instead they engineered a recovery of sorts and, even though Hales fell to a sharp return catch, Wessels played all around a straight one and Samit Patel dozily lifted his back leg and allowed himself to be stumped, Taylor at least saw his side into the final day of the match. He will know though, that a terrific season is in danger of ending in disappointment, with Warwickshire all but certain to go into the final round of games above them in the race for second place. The unfortunate bowler for both the drops was Ryan Sidebottom. While Brooks is the leading wicket-taker in the division and deserves great credit for his wonderfully accurate bowling, Sidebottom’s contribution extends beyond his left-arm swing. In a dressing room full of young, talented players on the cusp of exciting careers, the 36-year-old’s experience has proved an invaluable asset.Enticed back to the club after what he calls “seven wonderful years” at Trent Bridge, Sidebottom now stands on the brink of his fourth Championship title. While the first came with Yorkshire in 2001, there were two with Nottinghamshire in 2005 and 2010.”I’ve had a special career and achieved a lot more than I ever expected of myself,” Sidebottom said. “To win three Championships is really special.”This one maybe means more to me, because I suppose I’m coming to the twilight of my career. I’m coming to the end. Not just yet, I hope. I came back to the club not to ease up but to give it everything and try and win some more trophies for Yorkshire.”Martyn Moxon sold me a dream when I came back to Yorkshire. He said we had some young, talented players at the club that are improving year by year and are going to go from strength to strength. They wanted me to pass on a bit of my knowledge and a little bit of experience to come into the team. There are a lot of young internationals at the club and they’re doing really well. The club is going in the right direction.”How long can I go on? I get looked after by the coaches. I do a lot of yoga, a lot of weights in the off season and since I’ve got past 30, I’m probably bowling as well as I ever have done. I’d like two or three more years if I can. If I’m bowling and contributing, I’ll carry on.”If there was a shadow over the day, it was the news that Liam Plunkett had broken down while representing the second XI. Plunkett was coming back from an injury to his left ankle, but has sustained a new injury to his right Achilles. He will rest prior to a training trip to South Africa before Christmas with several other fast bowlers on the England radar.

Changes in resolution forced PCB, SLC to abstain

The Pakistan Cricket Board and Sri Lanka Cricket, the only Full Members to abstain from voting in the ICC Board meeting on Saturday, said that they had done so due to changes in the “comprehensive resolution” that required the approval of their respective governing boards and stakeholders. Their decision to abstain from voting, however, did not stop the ICC Board from approving a large number of changes affecting the governance and structure of international cricket. In the lead-up to the meeting, the PCB, SLC and Cricket South Africa had been vocal in their opposition of the proposed changes to the ICC. Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, however, said that the resolution presented to the Full Members for a vote on Saturday was a revised one that differed from the earlier draft. CSA’s decision to vote in favour of the proposal also affected the other two boards.”They got the revised proposal with many things toned down,” Ashraf told ESPNcricinfo, without getting into the details. “Now we need to take our governing board into confidence before returning in April. We had a mandate to oppose the revamp but we were forced to rethink after the present situation and after South Africa opted to vote. Maybe they saw things differently and in their interest.”SLC clarified that the revised resolution presented to the board required a fresh mandate from its executive committee and stakeholders, which the board was unable to obtain at the last minute.”At the ICC Board meeting … the revised resolution relating to the governance, competition and financial models of ICC was presented,” a release from SLC said. “The scope of the resolutions presently proposed was substantially changed, for which SLC required a fresh mandate from the executive committee and stakeholders.”As this was intimated to SLC this morning, the SLC representative at the ICC Board meeting abstained from voting as SLC were unable to obtain such mandate today, and would therefore have to go back to the executive committee and stakeholders before voting on the resolutions. We will seek to obtain a fresh mandate based on the above in order to express SLC’s stance at the next ICC Board meeting scheduled in April.”Ashraf stressed that the move to abstain would not have an adverse impact on the PCB and had bought the board some time to think over the proposals before the next ICC Board meeting in April.”We are not a loser in all of this,” Ashraf said. “We and Sri Lanka stood on our principle stance but it’s important to mention that we are not against any board. We want to address the concerns before reaching a consensus. We understand there is a need for change in the ICC structure but it has to be on an equity basis. India is already not playing Pakistan and there is no remedy if any board pulls out of its commitment. There should be a legal course we can pursue being an aggrieved party if any board deviates from their commitment until the new FTP comes into being.”The ICC paved the way for the end of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) in its current form, with future tours being dependent on “contractually binding” negotiations between boards. The governing body, in its release, also urged members to enter into bilateral agreements “as a matter of urgency” to confirm a schedule of the matches between 2015 and 2023. The ICC Board also approved the “contribution cost” model of revenue distribution and said that Full Members would gain greater financial recognition based on “the contribution they have made to the game, particularly in terms of finance, their ICC history and their on-field performances in the three formats.”Ashraf said the Pakistan board did not object to the financial model and said the ICC had promised a financial value that would not fluctuate from the present revenue Pakistan was getting.”They didn’t give us a precise figure but asked us to trust them,” Ashraf said. “We are not worried about any repercussion as we are still financially sound, if not the strongest without playing India, as other boards are fulfilling their commitment. Despite the fact that no international cricket is being played in Pakistan, we are not in deficit or debt.”
