Gideon Haigh’s examination of one of the finest bowlers to play the game, was named the Cricket Book of the Year at the 11th annual British Sports Book Awards at Lord’s on Monday.Haigh tells the tale of Shane Warne’s scarcely-fathomable talent, his pivotal cricket relationships and noteworthy controversies. He also breaks down Warne’s practically perfect bowling action, each element assessed, and the mental games Warne played, and invariably won, with batsmen. The book was selected from a shortlist which included Chris Waters’ biography of Fred Trueman, Simon Wilde’s and Graeme Swann’s autobiography.”As a cricket lover, I feel very blessed to have lived in Shane Warne’s era; as a journalist, I feel immensely fortunate to have had him as a subject,” Haigh said in a message to the ceremony, having been unable to attend.”Some of his luck now appears to have rubbed off on me. The British Sports Books aren’t quite the Ashes, but for a writer they’re getting close. I won’t be defeatist and say that this is the best cricket result an Australian will obtain this summer. But for me it’s a very happy one.” is now put to an online vote, along with the winners of 10 other categories, to find the Sports Book of the Year. Voting for the award opens on May 22 at www.britishsportsbookawards.co.uk and closes at midnight on June 7 with the winner announced three days later.Christopher Martin-Jenkins was also recognised for his career in a posthumous tribute. His widow Judy and son James were present to accept copies of Wisden signed by Ian Botham for Christopher’s outstanding contribution to sports writing.

Cricket New South Wales chairman Harinath resigns

The summer of change at Cricket New South Wales has continued with the resignation of Harry Harinath as chairman. Harinath will retain his position as a member of the state board and as a director of Cricket Australia but after stepping down as chairman at a Cricket New South Wales board meeting on Tuesday night he was replaced by fellow director John Warn.Already this season the state has lost its head coach Anthony Stuart and the chief executive David Gilbert, while Stuart Clark also resigned as chief executive of the Sydney Sixers Big Bash League team. Cricket New South Wales and in particular Gilbert also came in for stinging criticism from Brett Lee, who in December said that Stuart had been unfairly blamed for problems that had built up over several years.Gilbert stepped down after a special board meeting at the SCG in January and while Harinath’s position was also discussed, he survived until this week’s meeting. Harinath, who has sat on the state board since 2000 and served as chairman since 2008, said he was honoured to have spent nearly five years in the role.”I step down as chairman of the Cricket New South Wales board, knowing what an incredible honour it has been to have been involved with such a great state,” Harinath said. “It felt like the right time to make the decision and to give the organisation the chance to look to the future.”It has been a humbling experience to have been part of so many positive developments in recent years and I leave the role knowing that Cricket New South Wales is in a strong position to move forward. I am also confident in the knowledge that John will bring a strong commercial background, excellent cricket administration skills and a new energy to the role.”Warn, a former first-grade cricketer and administrator with Manly-Warringah, said he was keen to work closely with former players around the state to help return Cricket New South Wales to a position of strength.

Gino Peruzzi, do Boca Juniors, é indicado e Vasco abre conversas

Jurgensen named Bangladesh's interim head coach

Bangladesh have named Shane Jurgensen – their bowling coach – as their interim head coach

Bangladesh will have a training camp ahead of their trip to Zimbabwe for a tri-series•AFP

Bangladesh have named Shane Jurgensen – their bowling coach – as their interim head coach. The decision was made at the board’s cricket operations committee meeting during which the national team’s proposed tours of Zimbabwe and Europe in the next two months and playing a Twenty20 tournament in Trinidad and Tobago later in the year were also discussed.”Our bowling coach Shane Jurgensen will look after the national team as interim head coach until we appoint our next head coach,” Enayet Hossain Siraj, chairman of the cricket operations committee, said.Jurgensen, 36, a former Queensland fast bowler, joined Bangladesh as their bowling coach in October last year. The Bangladesh Cricket Board, though, hopes Richard Pybus joins the team as the full-time head coach; Pybus returned to Cape Town on Friday after a short visit to Bangladesh. “Now we will wait for his (Richard Pybus) confirmation. We will invite the other candidates in the shortlist, if only we ultimately fail to sign the agreement with Pybus,” the BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunis said.Pybus said his visit was a “fact-finding” mission and that he will make his final decision after speaking with his family. The board has also organised a training camp from May 20 to prepare for a tri-series against Zimbabwe and South Africa starting in Harare in late June. At the end of July, Bangladesh are likely to travel to Ireland and Scotland to play some limited-overs matches before to the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September.”We have also decided to give our proposal regarding the Zimbabwe and Ireland trips to the board for their approval,” Siraj said. “We are desperately trying to arrange some international matches for our national team.”

Wade's Test destiny in his own hands

Brad Haddin could be squeezed out of Australia’s Test side if Matthew Wade has an outstanding limited-overs campaign in the West Indies next month, according to the national selector John Inverarity. However, Inverarity said for the time being Haddin remained Australia’s first-choice Test wicketkeeper after an encouraging finish to the recent series against India.Wade and Haddin have both been named in the squad for Australia’s five ODIs in the Caribbean and they will both be part of the group that stays on for the three Tests that follow, although that squad is yet to be confirmed. Wade has overtaken Haddin as Australia’s preferred one-day gloveman thanks to his impressive form in the tri-series and he is also the incumbent in T20s.That gives Wade seven matches in the West Indies, where Haddin will be the backup one-day wicketkeeper, before the longer version begins. Australia’s first Test begins in Barbados on April 7 and Inverarity did not rule out the possibility that Wade could have jumped ahead of Haddin in all forms of the game by then.”There’s the possibility there,” Inverarity said. “At the moment Brad Haddin played in the last Test and we beat India 4-0. Brad had slight fluctuations of form but finished on a high note. At this moment Brad is our Test wicketkeeper. If Matthew does extraordinarily well, of course he comes in to contention there. There’s rivalry in any touring party … there’s nothing new there.”Inverarity said he had been pleased with Haddin’s glovework during his recent Sheffield Shield appearance for New South Wales against Western Australia in Perth, although he made a pair with the bat. And although Wade has become the No.1 in the 50-over format, Inverarity said Haddin was clearly second in line and was needed in the one-day squad in the Caribbean due to the difficulty of sending a replacement from Australia if Wade was injured.”If Matthew Wade had broken a finger, say in ODI four [in the Commonwealth Bank Series], Brad Haddin would have come back into the side,” Inverarity said. “I think they’re both looking forward to and we’re looking forward to it. In competitive sport friendly rivalry pushes each other to greater heights. I think they’ll do that in the West Indies and I think they’re both looking forward to working together.”Wade, 24, said he was looking forward to using the tour to learn from Haddin, who made his international debut 11 years ago. He said there was no reason for either man to feel uncomfortable at the prospect of competing for a spot, and he had enjoyed the opportunities he had already had to ask Haddin about keeping at international level.”I think we can definitely work well together,” Wade said. “I know Brad reasonably well. I spoke to him at the AB Medal at length and he gave me a call when I got picked for the one-dayers. He’s been really giving. Hopefully we can both work well together. I can’t see there being any problem. I’m just starting international cricket and he’s been playing a long time. I’m just going to be looking to learn off him. I’d be stupid not to.”At the moment I’m keeping in the one-dayers and the Twenty20s so most of my attention is going towards that. I haven’t really even thought that far down the track [the West Indies Test series]. I’m involved in a pretty big series here at the moment so I haven’t thought too far down the track. Every time I go out on the cricket pitch I’m looking to play my best.”

Rajasthan seal lead, headed for title

Defending champions Rajasthan have virtually sealed the Ranji Trophy title, after bowling out a Tamil Nadu batting line-up that crumbled under the pressure of big runs

The Report by Nagraj Gollapudi in Chennai22-Jan-2012
ScorecardDinesh Karthik scored 150 but it will most likely be in a losing cause•K Sivaraman

Defending champions Rajasthan have virtually sealed the Ranji Trophy title, and are set to become only the fifth team to win the crown in successive years. They bowled Tamil Nadu out on the third day at Chepauk, securing a massive first-innings lead, which will be enough to see them pronounced winners. Taking advantage of the Tamil Nadu batsmen’s fragile mindsets, over-eagerness to play attacking strokes and false shot selections, Rajasthan bundled out Tamil Nadu in 102.4 overs, less than half the overs the visitors had consumed during their first innings. Sitting on a 326-run lead, Rajasthan did not enforce the follow-on and finished the day 347 runs ahead. The Tamil Nadu batsmen have only themselves to blame for the failure. After their top-order batsmen, M Vijay, Abhinav Mukund and S Badrinath, had perished playing across the line on Saturday, you would expect the rest of the batsmen to learn from those mistakes. They did not. With a midwicket and short midwicket in place, K Vasudevadas decided to play, of all shots, an uppish flick to the leg side off Rituraj Singh. Vasudevadas had walked a yard out of his crease, indicating he had already made up his mind to play a stroke, and Gajendra Singh accepted the catch at midwicket.Dinesh Karthik and R Prasanna stayed positive, taking advantage of the innocuous lines and lengths on offer from Rajasthan’s change bowlers: Sumit Mathur and left-arm spinner Gajendra. Prasanna, who had scored a crucial century in the semi-final against Mumbai, swept Gajendra frequently. He was into the 40s in no time; the run-rate was three runs per over; and the partnership was worth 76.Then, Karthik committed the worse mistake of the match. He pushed Mathur towards mid-on, called for a single and set off quickly; but instead of running straight he ran across the pitch, into Prasanna’s lane. Though the batsmen averted a collision, Prasanna, who did not help himself by ball-watching, had been slowed down. Karthik dived in at the non-striker’s end, but the fielder, Rituraj, had missed the stumps by a long distance, and Dinesh Yagnik collected the wide throw and caught Prasanna short. As he walked back, Prasanna slammed his bat into his pads in disgust. The best batting line-up in domestic cricket, containing several batsmen tipped to be future India players, was crumbling.Karthik somewhat made up for his mistake by top-scoring for Tamil Nadu with 150. Having kept wickets for eight sessions, he knew the pitch was slow and waited for the ball to come on. After lunch, he square drove Pankaj Singh for four, and, when Pankaj went around the wicket and pitched fuller, cover drove for another boundary. Then, he stepped out against Rituraj and sent the ball sailing over long-on for the first six of the Tamil Nadu innings, bringing up 3000 runs in the Ranji Trophy with the shot. A tap behind square in the next over took Karthik to his third century of the season, and his second in a Ranji final.Tamil Nadu lost two more wickets at the other end, and with the match slipping from their grasp, the hosts’ frustration became apparent. Tamil Nadu’s captain L Balaji, who looked solid in a 60-run partnership with Karthik, was adjudged lbw by umpire Vineet Kulkarni when there was a clear inside edge. Balaji was shocked by the decision, showed his bat to Kulkarni to indicate he had got an edge, and then threw his bat and gloves to the ground once he crossed the ropes.Karthik remained unruffled and continued playing his strokes when Rajasthan took the second new ball. He scored most of his runs with aggressive shots through the off side and eventually fell inside edging an attempted drive off Mathur onto his stumps. J Kaushik hooked Mathur down fine-leg’s throat to end the inningsRajasthan, with the title all but secure, decided to bat again, and will tomorrow be able to celebrate having rattled a line-up as strong as Tamil Nadu’s with the weight of big runs.
