Newcastle fans react to shock Brighton defeat

Brighton & Hove Albion suffered a shock defeat at home to Bristol City on Saturday, throwing the race to win the Championship wide open. Their neck and neck race with Newcastle United will go down to the last day of the season.

It was a Josh Brownhill effort which provided the win for Bristol, with Chris Hughton’s men unable to find a reply.  The result followed a Magpies win away to Cardiff City on Friday, meaning Rafa Benitez’s side are now just a point behind the Seagulls.

With the margins so close, you’d give Newcastle a very good chance of finishing top of the tree come the final whistle next week. They’re at home to Barnsley while Brighton have a tricky trip away to Aston Villa.

Brighton have now lost two games on the spin and after having had such a good few months, their dreams the division win may be coming off the rails.

Of course, both teams have been automatically promoted, but the bragging rights and momentum finishing first would bring could be vital heading into the summer.

Newcastle fans were loving the result and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Four statistics that prove Sadio Mane is the signing of the summer

It was a crazy summer for the Premier League, with the division as a whole outspending the vast majority of Europe single-handedly with an outlay in excess of £1billion and smashing countless records in the process.

Indeed, 13 top flight sides set new record transfer fees during the summer window and although Liverpool’s swoop for Sadio Mane didn’t officially break theirs (however, it could go on to with future add-ons), his initial £34million price-tag certainly raised a few eyebrows.

But considering midfielders who haven’t even established themselves as definitively the world’s best can now claim £89million fees, naming no names (Paul Pogba), we at FootballFanCast think the Reds’ costly investment in Mane was actually a shrewd bit of business – especially considering he’s already helped propel Jurgen Klopp’s boys into the top four.

In fact, we’re billing him as the signing of the summer – and here are FOUR stats from around the web to prove it!

No new signing has performed better this season

According to stat enthusiasts Whoscored, Mane has been the third-best performer in the Premier League so far this season, with a contribution of three goals and one assist in six appearances. Only trumped by Son Heung-min and Kevin De Bruyne, he’s actually the division’s best performing new signing, featuring nine places above Manchester United’s world-record acquisition Paul Pogba.

He’s the fifth-best dribbler in the Premier League

According to Squawka, the Senegal star has completed the fifth-most dribbles (aka take-ons) of any player in the Premier League this season – just eight less than dribble king Eden Hazard in fewer appearances. That ability to beat defenders has been fundamental to Klopp’s high-octane counter-attacking philosophy and it’s also worth nothing Mane ranks fifth throughout the Premier League once again for successful duels overall – also including tackles and aerial challenges.

Transfer Record vs League Position

Our mates at Transfermarkt have come up with a very curious calculation, comparing clubs’ rankings in terms of net spend during the summer transfer window with their current position in the Premier League table. As you can see, Liverpool boast the strongest difference in this regard, exceeding their net spend ranking by a whopping 13 places, and much of that surplus has to be credited to Mane – the Reds’ most expensive summer signing by around £10million. If he hadn’t proved to be such an effective addition, the Anfield outfit would likely be much further down this list.

Premier League’s best performer at home

Granted we’re working on a two-game sample, in this instance including 4-1 and 5-1 batterings of Leicester City and Hull City respectively – which explains why the Reds have three players in the top five of Whoscored’s tally of the Premier League’s best performers at home this season. Nonetheless, it remains incredibly telling that Mane is the only new signing in the top five and one of just three in the top ten, alongside Pogba and Burnley’s Steven Defour. If Liverpool are to launch a title challenge this season, they’ll need to make Anfield a fortress – and it appears Mane is ready to play a huge part in that mission.

Kings XI seek revival against settled Pune

Rising Pune Supergiants may be the visitors, but they enter this clash as favourites against an underperforming Kings XI Punjab

The Preview by Sirish Raghavan16-Apr-2016Match factsSunday, April 17, 2016
Start time: 1600 local (1030 GMT)Big Picture”Played two, lost two” only scratches at the surface of Kings XI Punjab’s corpus of worries as they head into their third match of the season. The manner of their defeat against Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla was particularly disconcerting. The middle order looked shaky and David Miller and Glenn Maxwell – on whom the team strongly depends – appeared badly out of form. Chaotic running between the wickets and missed chances in the field rounded off an all-round shambolic performance. Hence, even as they return to Mohali, Kings XI may be forgiven for feeling like they have strayed up a beanstalk and need to steal a win from Rising Pune Supergiants.Supergiants, for their part, will seek momentum with their settled side. Notwithstanding their defeat at the hands of Gujarat Lions, they have most bases covered. The top order is firing, the spinners are playing their part, and captain MS Dhoni played a fine cameo when he got the chance, against Lions. Though Rajat Bhatia and Mitchell Marsh had a poor match against the Lions, they bowled economical spells in the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians. RP Singh and Ishant Sharma may be more of a concern, though, particularly in relation to their struggles when bowling in the end overs.Ultimately, Supergiants seem to have more options and more ways to win a match than Kings XI. The hosts will need a disciplined and gutsy effort with contributions from their key players to register their first win of IPL 2016.In the spotlightMuch attention has been paid to Kings XI’s underperforming big-ticket overseas players, but in the meanwhile, Manan Vohra has scored good-looking, quickfire thirties in both their matches this season. After a quiet 2015, the 22-year-old looks in fine form at the moment and, with many of his team-mates struggling, might be the man to produce a standout performance. In the spotlight for Supergiants will be Ashwin. Both of them. M Ashwin, the young legspinner, has done a good job in the two matches so far and clearly has his captain’s backing. What was particularly noticeable in the opening match was how R Ashwin, senior offspinner and fellow Tamil Nadu player, was guiding the youngster through his spell, even as he himself got just the one over. In the last match, the two Ashwins bowled out their quotas and were their team’s best bowlers. After Kings XI’s capitulation to Amit Mishra on Friday, the Ashwins might have their work cut out.Team newsDespite the batting collapse of the last match, Kings XI might well be tempted to give the top seven another chance. On the bowling front, though, Mitchell Johnson has looked out of sorts, which could leave the door open for Kyle Abbott or Marcus Stoinis.Kings XI Punjab (probable) 1 M Vijay, 2 Manan Vohra, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 David Miller (capt), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Axar Patel, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Mitchell Johnson/Kyle Abbott/Marcus Stoinis, 9 Mohit Sharma, 10 Pardeep Sahu, 11 Sandeep SharmaDhoni is known for his aversion to tinkering with his team, but as he strives to hit upon his best XI, he may make an exception. Albie Morkel might be considered in place of Mitchell Marsh, while RP Singh could well make way for Ishwar Pandey or Jaskaran Singh.Rising Pune Supergiants (probable) 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Steven Smith, 5 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 6 Mitchell Marsh/Albie Morkel, 7 Rajat Bhatia, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 M Ashwin, 11 RP Singh/Ishwar Pandey/Jaskaran SinghPitch and conditionsThe Mohali pitch is generally good for batting, though Lions’ Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja showed that quality bowling can reap rewards too. Big boundaries, especially square of the wicket, will test the teams’ running between the wickets and fielding. That test will be all the greater in an afternoon match, with a forecast high of 38 degrees.Stats and trivia Kings XI have a win-loss record of 1-4 in their last five matches in Mohali. Prior to that, they had won six consecutive matches at the venue Kevin Pietersen has two fifty-plus IPL scores in Mohali, in as many matches

Brooks and Patterson set up three-day win

ScorecardJack Brooks collected his best match figures of 9 for 84•Getty Images

Yorkshire’s travelling supporters at Championship matches are a pleasant bunch of people. One might even call them the low-sodium salt of the earth. It is unthinkable that they would ever break into a chant as charmless as: “That’s why we’re champions.” Then again, on the third day of this match at New Road, Alex Lees’s players needed no one to trumpet their merits; they did the job perfectly themselves.Having conceded a first-innings lead of four runs and handicapped by the absence of Ryan Sidebottom with a calf injury, Yorkshire’s seamers performed as well as ever they did in their title-winning summer. On a pitch offering nothing but a pinch of assistance to the quicker bowlers, Jack Brooks and Tim Bresnan wrecked Worcestershire’s top order in just eight Test-class overs to leave Daryl Mitchell’s side languishing on 21 for 4.An hour’s determined resistance from flatmates Tom Fell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore and a few late blows from the tail elicited stoic cheers from home supporters but they did nothing whatever to colour the ultimate outcome. Steven Patterson rumbled in from the New Road End to remove Fell and Ben Cox in the same over just before lunch and then bowled meanly and straight after the resumption. One or two of Worcestershire’s lower-order batsmen may not be too happy with their choice of stroke but Patterson was cheerily content with their selections. The tall medium-pacer claimed career-best figures of 5 for 11, and while Jack Shantry whacked Bresnan for three off-side boundaries late in proceedings, last September’s hero could do nothing to rescue his side. All this took place on an April afternoon when Worcestershire’s demise offered a curious contrast to the almost magical portents of spring on the horse chestnut and copper beech. The many delights girding New Road deserved more than a three-day finish.Needing 105, Yorkshire completed their ten-wicket victory with dreamy ease in 17 overs at 3.42 pm and collected 22 points for their labours. Stand-in skipper Lees made an unbeaten 52 on his 22nd birthday; he may have better days in his career but few prouder ones. His opening partner Will Rhodes contributed a quietly impressive 45 not out on his Championship debut. The lazy-thinking critics of Division Two cricket will probably be quick to point their fingers at the failings of promoted Worcestershire’s batsmen when they study this game’s scorecard. This would be unfair on both sets of players. It is far too early to reach a judgement on the batsmen, one of whom, Tom Fell, scored a fine century in this match. Much more importantly, though, it would belittle the achievement of Brooks, whose second-innings 4 for 28 completed a career-best match return of 9 for 84, with seven of his victims top-six batsmen.Bowling with good pace and the sort of discipline a Calvinist might envy, Brooks first removed Moeen Ali when the England batsman could only edge a fine delivery to Jack Leaning at second slip; he then accounted for Mitchell with a brutal lifter which was fended to Lees at first slip; finally, he made Alex Gidman’s Worcestershire debut a miserable affair when he had the county’s new signing caught behind for 4.All this came on top of Bresnan’s removal of Richard Oliver in the third over when the opener shouldered arms to a ball that dipped in to him. Just after Gidman trooped up the steps of the pavilion, the bells of the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary began to toll for noon. Those who saw a deeper omen in the tintinnabulations were not far wrong. Brooks and Bresnan had barely bowled a bad ball in 13 overs.”There were a couple of little periods in the first innings when we let Worcestershire off the hook but Jack was fantastic today,” Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie said. “Tim was excellent and then Steve Patterson just did his thing. He has that ability to hit that shoebox on a good length and ask questions of the batsman.”They took all our players away and banned our captain and we still came away with a ten-wicket victory,” continued Gillespie, referring to Andrew Gale’s enforced absence. “It’s one of the best wins I’ve been involved with in cricket.”For his part, Worcestershire coach Steve Rhodes paid justified tribute to the quality of the Yorkshire attack. “That first session really cost us but sometimes you just have to take your hat off to the opposition,” he said. “It was world-class Test-match bowling from Bresnan and Brooks and that could have destroyed a lot of batting line-ups. We’ll learn a lot from that, not just our batsmen, but our bowlers, too.”
