West Ham fans slam Fornals v Southampton

A number of West Ham supporters have criticised Pablo Fornals’ performance in the clash against Southampton on Boxing Day.

The Hammers were back in Premier League action as they sought a return to winning ways after their Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham in midweek.

With teams around them finding form in the top-four battle, it is vital that David Moyes’ men continue to find consistency to avoid falling away in the chase for a Champions League finish.

However, Fornal struggled badly this afternoon against the Saints, so much so that he was substituted at half-time by Moyes with the Irons trailing 0-1.

As per SofaScore, the Spaniard completed only 14 of his 24 passes and won just one duel, while he failed to record any shots or make any defensive contributions other than being dribbled past twice. Giving away possession 12 times summed up a hapless performance from the 25-year-old.

Dion Ebrahim on Zimbabwe A's opening match in Emerging Nations tourney

Zimbabwe A may have messed up on their first match of the Emerging Nations tournament, against Denmark in Harare, but they would have been quite humiliated without a fighting innings of 64 by their number four batsman Dion Ebrahim. Here he talks to John Ward about that match.JW: First of all, Dion, can you describe the match conditions, please.DE: The pitch was fairly bouncy; it gave a lot of steep bounce, and the Danish bowlers used that very well, with a good high action. They moved the ball around well and I think that’s what got our batsmen into a bit of trouble.JW: What was the situation when you went in to bat?DE: We were one run for the loss of two wickets, in the first over.JW: So what was your game plan as you went in to bat?DE: My main aim was just to stay there. Runs weren’t the biggest issue as we had just lost two quick wickets. I just had to stay there, steady the ship and try to calm things down. It got worse and worse with more and more batsmen dropping, so I started very slowly.JW: Did you find it difficult batting out there?DE: I did, with the variable and steep bounce, together with the changes of pace the bowlers used.JW: Did the pitch change as the match went on?DE: Yes, it got less bounce and flattened out towards the end.JW: Which bowlers did you find the most difficult?DE: Their opening left-arm bowler, Thomas Hansen. He varied his pace well and he managed to make the most of the steep bounce because of his height. I think he put all of our batsmen under pressure, in trouble.JW: How did you manage with the others?DE: I coped with the others fairly well, didn’t take any risks. He was the main bowler, and our plan was just to see him through and then pick off the other guys.JW: When did you finally find a partner to stay with you?DE: I got a lot of assistance from Dave Mutendera and Warren Gilmour. I;m not sure how many our partnerships were worth, but they were the steadiest.JW: Did you find the pressure on you seemed to relax as time went on.DE: I felt I was relaxing more towards the end and actually enjoying the challenge. It’s about the third time it’s happened to me, batting at four and coming in in the first over and wickets dropping around me.JW: What shots do you remember the best?DE: There weren’t too many of them; to be honest I can’t remember. I do remember getting my fifty up, a leg glide off a short ball.JW: You did seem to enjoy a couple of narrow escapes during your innings.DE: Well, I felt I needed to get a few more runs on the board. Wickets were dropping so fast that I could see a situation to come where we were left with one wicket in hand and not many runs on the board, so I did occasionally take the initiative and went for some risky shots.JW: How were you out in the end?DE: Caught midwicket, sweeping their left-arm spinner.JW: Fortunately our later batsmen came in and got us some good runs.DE: It’s unfortunate that our top order didn’t do too well.JW: We would have been in a sorry state without your innings, though. Can you go over the Denmark innings now?DE: I think we played well, given that we were a bit unfortunate with some chances not going to hand or going to ground. I did feel that we underestimated them.JW: Do you think perhaps our players were a bit over-confident.DE: Maybe. Maybe, I’m not quite sure.JW: Which of the Danish batsmen impressed you the most?DE: Their opener Pedersen who got a fifty, but then gave it away. He was very strong on the off side.JW: What were relationships like on the field between our team and the Danish players?DE: Very friendly. They were competitive but friendly.JW: What is your overall impression of the Danish team, compared with, say, a Zimbabwe first-league club side?DE: I’d say they would be stronger than a first-league side. They’re strong competitors as well.

Newcastle transfer news on Dusan Vlahovic

Newcastle United are reportedly among seven clubs in the Premier League now eyeing up a transfer move for Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Back of the queue…

It seems like every man and his dog wants to sign the 21-year-old, and the St James’ Park outfit are no exception.

Corriere Fiorentino reported earlier this week (via Sport Witness) that they joined the race to sign the Serbia international, although it will not be easy for them to meet Fiorentina’s demands.

Nonetheless, more clubs seem to be entering the hunt for his signature as the January transfer window draws closer.

The Latest: Premier League interest

As per 90min, Newcastle are one of seven English top-flight clubs now eyeing Vlahovic, with the others being Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Everton, while Juventus are also credited with an interest.

The player’s agents were in England earlier this month to engage in talks with Premier League sides, as their client is likely to be available for around £70m.

A well-placed source told the news outlet that some scouts think he could be a ‘better option’ than Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland, as he is ‘that good’ and ‘really at the top of his game’.

Vlahovic is under contract until 2023 but has rejected an offer to extend it, so Fiorentina now want to cash in and duly maximise the transfer fee they would receive by selling him.

The Verdict: Impossible?

With the sheer amount of competition for his services, coupled with the fact that the Magpies currently find themselves in a relegation scrap, it seems almost impossible that they would be able to attract Vlahovic, even with their new mega-rich owners.

Lauded as an ‘incredible’ striker by Serie A expert Conor Clancy back in June, Vlahovic has scored no fewer than 12 goals in just 14 matches in total across all competitions so far this season, also pitching in with three assists (Transfermarkt).

The 6 foot 3 beast will no doubt have bigger suitors than the Magpies over the next coming months, so it is now up to the new owners to show just how much ambition they have for the long-term project at St James’ Park.

Keenan Carole: Leeds’ next big thing?

Leeds United could have a future star in their youth ranks and his surname could well be familiar to some of the older members of the Elland Road faithful.

Sebastien Carole featured for the Whites in a two-year spell back in 2006 and 2008 before foraging a career in England’s non-league pyramid but his son, Keenan, is setting alight Thorp Arch at just 17.

Earlier in the year, footage of the teenager scoring a sublime solo goal had fans hugely excited over his potential and some were very eager to see him involved more often, and since then, he’s featured twice for the U23 squad.

Meanwhile, predominantly playing as a left-back or a left-winger, Carole has contributed towards nine goals across 33 appearances for the U18s, via Transfermarkt, so he’s certainly catching the eye.

His form for the Whites’ academy setup has caught the eye of a few in and around the game.

“One to watch and a star in the making at Leeds United – Keenan Carole – son of former Leeds attacker Seb Carole,” claimed journalist Pete O’Rourke to social media in November 2020.

Whilst BBC reporter Adam Pope highlighted his pace and acceleration as one encouraging attribute following a starring role from the bench against Tranmere U21s back in September.

“Lots of positives all over the park including the sub Keenan Carole injecting real pace down the left side,” he tweeted.

There are several exciting talents emerging at the Yorkshire giants, including Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Charlie Cresswell, so perhaps the 17-year-old gem could be the next to attract the eye of Marcelo Bielsa.

Given the struggles of Jack Harrison and Dan James this season, the Argentine manager could do little wrong in handing players like Carole an opportunity in the cups in 2022.

If he’s good enough, the young winger could save Andrea Radrizzani several millions in the transfer market. Of course, it’s still early days but the signs are hugely, hugely encouraging.

Southampton handed Armstrong injury worry

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at the weekend in their latest Premier League outing after the latest international break, Southampton have been dealt a worrying injury issue that could impact their team for the next few weeks.

What’s the news?

Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong was not in the squad for the game at Carrow Road after picking up a calf injury before the game according to Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

This will surely be a big blow for the team and a big disappointment for the fans after the Scottish international had only recently recovered from a calf issue and managed to get some Premier League minutes under his belt before his first start of the season in their 1-0 win over Aston Villa earlier in the month.

Since joining the south coast club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Celtic in a deal worth a reported fee of £7m, the 29-year-old has made a total of 109 appearances for Southampton across all competitions in which he has managed to score 14 goals and provide 11 assists in the process.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

Given how Armstrong was just getting back into the swing of things for Southampton and played in both of Scotland’s recent World Cup qualifying matches against Moldova and Denmark, this latest calf issue will surely be a big setback for the player.

His latest appearance for his country against Denmark saw Armstrong come off the substitutes bench and provide an assist for his club teammate Che Adams in their 2-0 win.

Hasenhuttl and everyone else at Southampton will undoubtedly be hoping that the forward will be able to recover from this latest setback as soon as possible and not miss too many games for the Saints. As they approach their winter run of fixtures the manager will want as many options in the squad available to him to help keep his side away from the relegation zone.

If Armstrong does end up spending another significant period of time out injured, Hasenhuttl will have to rely on the likes of Theo Walcott, Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Tella to step up to the plate and provide a suitable attacking threat while Armstrong is out recovering. Given their inconsistent nature, this injury blow will certainly leave their Austrian head coach gutted.

West Ham: Moyes must axe Benrahma vs Genk

West Ham United can put one foot in the knockout stages of the Europa League with another victory against Genk later this evening.

David Moyes’ side travel to Belgium with a 100% record in Group H, where they hold a six-point advantage over all three remaining teams. And they will head into kickoff in inspired form.

The Irons thrashed Aston Villa 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to cement their place inside the Premier League’s top four. They are now level on points with defending champions Manchester City, who they knocked out of the Carabao Cup this time last week.

Moyes will be tasked with the conundrum of resting players, whilst also maintaining their impressive performance levels, so it will be intriguing to see his lineup.

One name that could be facing the axe tonight is Said Benrahma after a mixed showing at Villa Park.

The £22.5m-rated Algerian winger delivered an assist for Declan Rice’s strike but that was more down to the English powerhouse as he drilled a scorcher home from long range.

Aside from that, he offered very little and it’s been a similar case over the last few games as his form has tailed off compared to the way in which he began the 2021/22 campaign.

Benrahma kickstarted the season with two goals and two assists against Newcastle United and Leicester City but in the subsequent eight outings, he has only scored one goal and provided one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

Recently, The West Ham Way’s Dave Walker described the wide man as “most exciting player” the club have had since Dimitri Payet, also dubbing him a “match-winner.”

Elsewhere, the 5 foot 8 wizard was once dubbed a “true magician” by former Nice teammate Lorenzo Vinci.

However, on Sunday, he was hooked after just 68 minutes, having managed only three more touches of the ball (31) than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (28), which goes to show his lack of influence on the game.

Furthermore, the 26-year-old dynamo failed to deliver a single accurate cross, made just one dribble from three attempts (33.3%) and won only three of his eight battles (37.5%), via SofaScore.

This sort of lightweight showing typifies the inconsistencies in his game but that’s understandable as there’s still some element of adapting to the Premier League, as well as other players such as Rice and Jarrod Bowen elevating their games even more.

It could be wise to bench him to spark a reaction and also hand an opportunity to players like Nikola Vlasic, who too need to impress the manager outside of top-flight action.

Moyes must be ruthless and axe Benrahma in Belgium tonight.

Deveria ser o principal jogador de articulação da equipe alvinegra. No entanto, errou praticamente todos os passes que tentou.

4,0
Guilherme
Teve a primeira – e grande – chance do Botafogo.

Man Utd fans slam Shaw vs Man City

Many Manchester United fans have been left slamming the display of Luke Shaw at home to Manchester City in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

The England international left-back endured a torrid first half, as did the whole of United’s defence, as Pep Guardiola’s men went into half-time 2-0 up thanks to an own goal from Eric Bailly and one from Bernardo Silva.

Shaw was guilty of letting Silva ghost in behind him to poke the ball home for the second goal, which then gave the Red Devils an almost impossible battle in the second half.

The former Southampton man lost out on two of his duels, and also failed to record a single dribble or interception in the game, while losing possession of the ball on no fewer than on 12 separate occasions (SofaScore).

He was taken off injured for Alex Telles with around 20 minutes to go in the match, and perhaps may benefit from a spell of rest if that issue rules him out of England duty.

West Ham fans hail Dawson display

As West Ham United breezed past Genk at the London Stadium this evening, taking yet more control of Group H, many Irons supporters were blown away by the performance and contribution of defender Craig Dawson.

David Moyes’ men took a giant leap towards finishing top by beating the Belgian giants this evening.

Indeed, they have gone six points clear with their victory and, as per the new Europa League format, potentially finishing as group victors will guarantee West Ham a spot straight into the last 16.

Moyes rested a fair few first teamers tonight with the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko, Nikola Vlasic, Alphonse Areola and Dawson all coming in after the weekend victory at Everton.

Among all of these fresh faces, it was the latter man who garnered real praise on Twitter for his display – especially considering he opened the floodgates with his towering first half header.

He was also among the highest-rated West Ham players on SofaScore and it’s safe to say his ‘massive’ display didn’t go unnoticed.
