– comentou.

Bennett stars as New Zealand crush Kenya

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Hamish Bennett blew away the Kenyan top order•Getty Images

Hamish Bennett led New Zealand’s humiliation of a Kenya outfit clearly out of its depth, attacking the stumps with metronomic accuracy to rip out four quick wickets as the minnows capitulated for just 69 – their lowest World Cup total and the fifth worst overall. Tim Southee helped himself to three cheap wickets, while Jacob Oram also picked up three in three overs before Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum eased their side to an unchallenged 10-wicket win.Kenya’s first showing at this tournament demonstrated both their lack of competency against good, but hardly exceptional, seam bowling and their incomprehension of the review system – borderline decisions were accepted without question and clear cut ones questioned out of sheer desperation.Jimmy Kamande called correctly at the toss and opted to bat on a pitch expected to help slow bowlers, but that was Kenya’s last success of the morning. The new ball barely deviated off the straight for Southee but Kenya’s young opening pair, perhaps over-awed by the occasion, remained nervously rooted to the crease. They had cobbled together just 14 runs – all in singles – when Southee nipped one off the seam to strike Alex Obanda in front of leg stump.Umpire Marais Erasmus’ decision initially looked a good one, but there was a hint that a review might have been in order. The Kenyans were, of course, unfamiliar with the UDRS but that provides no excuse for Obanda’s tame acceptance of his demise as replays showed that the ball would have gone over the top of the stumps by at least an inch or two. With the innings drifting swiftly into mediocrity Collins Obuya got going with a couple of meaty blows off Nathan McCullum, who opened the bowling from the other end, but just as he and Waters were starting to gain momentum Bennett was introduced and soon had the innings in disarray. First, he fired one full and straight at Waters, the ball shooting through at a low shin height to pin the batsman in front of his stumps.

Smart stats

  • Kenya’s total of 69 is by far their lowest in World Cup games – it’s their first sub-100 total in 24 games. They lasted 23.5 overs, which is the lowest for them.

  • It’s also the fifth-lowest total in World Cups. Canada’s 36 against Sri Lanka in 2003 is the lowest.

  • For the first time in a World Cup match, New Zealand dismissed a team for less than 100. The previous lowest against New Zealand in a full 50-over match had been Bangladesh’s 116 in 1999.

  • New Zealand won the match with 252 balls to spare, which is their most comprehensive World Cup win – and the third-best for all teams in World Cups – in terms of balls remaining. In all ODIs, it’s New Zealand’s second-most emphatic win.

  • Hamish Bennett’s 4 for 16 is his best ODI figures, bettering the 4 for 46 he had achieved against Pakistan in his previous ODI.

There would have been high hopes in the Kenyan camp of Steve Tikolo, their veteran batsman, sparking a revival but he was swiftly removed by a searing full delivery that burst through a lazy swish to make a mess of his stumps. With the ball keeping low and starting to nip off the seam Obuya was the next batsman to be rapped on the front pad, right in front of middle. Perhaps out of desperation, a completely superfluous review was called for but there was no second life for Obuya and the innings sank even further when Maurice Ouma was dispatched in identical fashion in Bennett’s next over to leave Kenya staring into the abyss at 49 for 5.That soon become 59 for 6, Jacob Oram finding the edge of Kamande’s bat to end his brief resistance, and with that the fight went from Kenya’s innings. Oram had Thomas Odoyo, who was fending at a rising delivery, easily caught by Jesse Ryder and Southee was on a hat-trick when he removed Nehemiah Odhiambo and Shem Ngoche with the last two balls of his sixth over. There was no second international hat-trick for him, however, with Elijah Otieno flicking Oram straight to midwicket shortly afterwards to end a miserable Kenyan innings.Guptill took the lead as New Zealand completed the formality of the chase in just eight overs, thrashing two enormous sixes and peppering the boundary almost at will in a 32-ball 39. An uninspired McCullum chipped in with a rapid 26 as Kenya at least attempted to remain upbeat in the field despite the futility of their efforts. While New Zealand would have been hoping for a successful start to their campaign, the ease of their win here is hardly the best preparation for sterner challenges ahead against the likes of Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. For Kenya, things can only get better after a day they would dearly like to forget, though their performance won’t have done any favours to the argument that Associate nations deserve to be involved in future World Cups.

West Brom update on Matt Clarke move

There has been mounting speculation on the future of Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Matt Clarke at West Bromwich Albion, and there has now been an update on the situation.

What’s the latest?

According to West Brom reporter Steve Madeley (via The Athletic), the 25-year-old centre-back “would be keen” to stay at The Hawthorns this summer.

Madeley wrote:

“Clarke would be keen on a permanent move to The Hawthorns and there are reasons for which a deal would appeal to West Brom as it is likely that any deal would include a low up-front fee and would be weighted towards performance-related add-ons and sell-on clauses.”

Bruce will be buzzing

There is no doubt that Steve Bruce would be buzzing at the idea of the defender wanting to stay at the club after his comments about Clarke in an interview a few weeks ago.

Bruce told Express and Star:

“He has been, arguably, since I’ve walked through the door – he’s been our best player so I’m really, really, happy for him.

“All those conversations – it’s all about the future. What is going to happen in the future is the big thing and we’ll have those talks.”

The Baggies centre-back has featured 32 times in the Championship this season, with his effectiveness and influence in the backline a clear indicator as to why Bruce holds him in such high regard.

Clarke has made 1.9 interceptions, 3.2 clearances and 1.5 tackles on average per game, kept ten clean sheets, won the majority of his duels combined (63%) and has been successful in the majority of his dribbles (63%), proving to be a consistent force for West Brom throughout the season.

West Brom have now squandered their chances of picking up a playoff spot in the Championship this season, but will now need to focus on rebuilding and reflecting on the issues that have presented themselves this season to improve and hit the ground running to earn a place back in the Premier League next season.

Permanently signing Clarke could be a great step in their pursuit to return to top-flight football as he has proven he has what it takes to offer reliability and good fitness in the Championship for them, something many players in the team have struggled with throughout the current campaign.

Newcastle played a blinder with Todd Cantwell

Newcastle United enjoyed a brilliant January transfer window as they brought in a number of players to bolster their squad heading into the second half of the campaign.

They were struggling in the bottom three of the Premier League just after the turn of the year and PIF backed Eddie Howe by signing the likes of Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Matt Targett.

A few months on and the Magpies are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone with seven games left to play and look set to avoid the drop.

This suggests that PIF played the January window brilliantly as the new signings provided the team with a much-needed lift.

Whilst you can praise the owners for the players they did bring in, you can also appreciate the players that they opted against going for. For example, Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell was linked with a £20m switch to St. James’ Park at the start of the month.

Newcastle were 19th at the time of the report and ultimately avoided paying that sizeable fee for the 23-year-old, with Championship outfit Bournemouth eventually snapping him up on deadline day on loan until the end of the season. The Cherries reportedly have an option to sign him for £11m in the summer, £9m cheaper than what it would have cost the Toon in January.

This means that they saved themselves from making an expensive error as they would have, seemingly, been overpaying for the midfielder. Norwich were willing to settle for £11m in the end and that means that it would have been a blunder from PIF to pay £20m at the start of that month.

His form, or lack thereof, has also shown that they were right not to bring him to the club – for any price. He has been an unused substitute in two of Bournemouth’s last four games and has zero goals and zero assists in his 10 Championship appearances since making the switch.

This comes after he endured a torrid first half of the campaign with Norwich. He was not directly involved in a single Premier League goal for the Canaries in eight outings and Yellows legend Chris Sutton claimed that he was “getting above his station”, which does not suggest that he was/is in the right frame of mind for a relegation scrap.

Therefore, PIF played a masterclass by opting against a deal for the dud in January as they saved themselves a decent chunk of change and avoided signing a player who is desperately out of form.

Rangers vs Livingston team news: Jack

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left lauding some early team news ahead of their game at home to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership tonight.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that Ryan Jack is now available for selection in the squad, as is Scott Arfield.

While having another player in Arfield back is a boost in itself, members of the Ibrox faithful were particularly pleased with the news regarding Jack, who has been victim to too many injury problems during his time at Ibrox.

He has no doubt been a key part of the team over the years, scoring nine goals and supplying a further nine assists in the Scottish Premiership for the Light Blues, while he made 19 appearances in their title-winning season.

Nonetheless, it will be great just to see him out on the pitch again, having missed 64 matches through injury since the beginning of last season.

Everton must finally offload Cenk Tosun

Everton must finally offload Cenk Tosun amid a recent update on his future.

What’s the story?

According to Turkish publication Sabah, Besiktas were hopeful of re-signing their former star last month, but that a deal failed to materialise because Tosun wanted some money from Everton to cut his contract short.

Moshiri’s biggest disaster

It’s fair to say that Farhad Moshiri has had his fair share of transfer disasters during his time at Goodison Park, but Tosun certainly figures high up on that list, if not right at the very top.

Signed for £27m from Besiktas back in January 2018, the 30-year-old was tipped for big things by the man who signed him, Sam Allardyce, who said: “He is Turkey’s No 1 striker and has scored goals in the Champions League and the Turkish League but he is desperate to play here in the Premier League.

“We looked at the qualities of the player, his talent and goal-scoring, and his resilience, too. I do not think you can look any more than we have done and, for the price, he is the best in Europe at the moment.”

A big claim that has come to back-fire spectacularly on the Toffees in the years since.

In 60 games for the club in total, he’s scored just 11 goals and provided only six assists in that time too, meaning he has cost the club more than £1.5m per goal he has scored – it’s no surprise then that he was also shipped out on loan in recent seasons too.

Indeed, according to CIES, his transfer market value now is less than £1m – a real indication of the kind of decline the Turkish ace has endured at Goodison Park in his time at the club.

And, back in December, former Premier League ace Alan Hutton urged then Everton boss Rafa Benitez to have a discussion with Tosun over his Everton future and to try and move him on for the good of the club.

He said: “But I think that the only way you can really move forward and is to try and be open and honest. Have a sit-down with the manager and player.

“Say: ‘Look, you are not in my plans, you’re not going to be involved. You’re not going to be in matchday squads. All you’re going to do is train.’

“I think if you have an open and honest discussion, maybe that will help to move things along. If you don’t have these conversations, you just leave him to think and go in a bad mood. He will get in a huff and go: ‘Well I’ll just sit it out then.”

Given Tosun has not been in the reckoning at Goodison Park for a long while now, new Everton boss Frank Lampard must surely now call time on the striker’s time at the club and acquiesce to the striker’s demands and finally get him out.

Meanwhile, Everton facing a Rafa Benitez-esque howler…
