The Premier League ‘Sicknote’ XI

The term ‘Sicknote’ may have been used to describe Spurs’ perennially-crocked former winger Darren Anderton, but it seems as though there are a host of current footballers who are all equally as deserving of this title. Whilst the intense and frenetic nature of the modern game means that the sport is more exciting to watch than ever before, the downside is that the game’s best footballers are increasingly susceptible to injury. The following eleven players seem to be better acquainted with the treatment room than the majority of their peers.

GK – Chris Kirkland – Wigan Athletic

The damning statistics:

213 career appearances since debut in 1999

Missed 15 Premier League games for Wigan Athletic over last two seasons

It has been said by many that Kirkland would’ve been England’s number one had he managed to remain free from injury for a prolonged period of time, but unfortunately the former Liverpool custodian has been dogged by injury for most of his career. Such problems meant that Kirkland was restricted to less than 50 outings in four years at Anfield, with his career marred by knee, finger, wrist and back ailments.

DF – Fabio Aurelio – Free Agent

The damning statistics:

50 Premier League starts for Liverpool in last four seasons (averaging 12.5 starts per season)

Defensively sound and in possession of an excellent left-foot, it is with great sadness that I learned of Fabio Aurelio’s recent exit from Anfield. The fact that manager Rafael Benitez offered him a (subsequently rejected) pay-as-you-play deal is indicative of the injury woes Aurelio has suffered on Merseyside, with Reds fans unaccustomed to seeing the Brazilian in the team for prolonged stretches. Aurelio’s early Anfield career was affected by a torn Achilles tendon, with his latter-day Liverpool absences caused by a torn adductor muscle and a knee injury sustained whilst playing beach football with his children last summer.

DF – Rio Ferdinand – Manchester United

The damning statistics:

36 Premier League starts for Manchester United in last two seasons (averaging 18 starts per season)

Rio Ferdinand’s well-documented back problems of the last two years have been of great concern to both Manchester United and England fans. The chronic nature of the injury suggests that the ailment may be degenerative, thus leading to genuine fears over the England skipper’s long-term future. Thankfully for the Old Trafford faithful, the likes of Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic and Gary Neville have managed to keep United’s rearguard impressively tight in his absence.

DF – Jonathan Woodgate – Tottenham Hotspur

The damning statistics:

Three Premier League starts last season

104 Premier League/La Liga appearances in last five seasons (averaging 20.8 starts per season)

12 appearances for Real Madrid in two seasons in Spain (no appearances in first season at Real Madrid)

The completion of just three Premier League games for Tottenham last season served to re-emphasise the injury-prone nature of Jonathan Woodgate. Regarded as one of England’s finest centre-backs when fit, Woodgate has constantly struggled to retain fitness for long periods of time. Back problems heartbreakingly prevented Woodgate from appearing at the 2006 World Cup, whilst his recent absence from the Spurs first-team has been attributed to a troublesome groin injury. Woodgate’s infamous injury problems whilst playing for Real Madrid even lead to him being voted the ‘worst signing of the 21st century’ by readers of Spain’s leading sports daily Diario Marca.

DF – Ledley King – Tottenham Hotspur

The damning statistics:

94 Premier League starts for Tottenham Hotspur in last five seasons (averaging 18.8 starts per season)

Considered by many to be the finest English defender of his generation, the curious condition suffered by Ledley King has served to hamper what could have been a glorious club and international career. Bereft of knee cartilage, King’s rare problem prevents the player from being able to play more than once a week. This problem has meant that only once in the last five seasons has King been able to feature in more than 25 Premier League games in a season.

MF – Michael Essien – Chelsea

The damning statistics:

25 Premier League starts for Chelsea in last two seasons (averaging 12.5 starts per season)

An integral component of Chelsea’s midfield, Essien’s dynamic, all-action displays appear to have taken their toll upon his body. A regular during his first three seasons at Stamford Bridge, the man known as ‘The Bison’ has suffered a string of serious injuries over the last two seasons which have restricted his first-team involvement. Having sustained anterior ligament damage on international duty, Essien missed 6 months of the 2008/09 season. His 2009/10 season was also affected by injury; a hamstring injury sustained in December against Apoel Nicosia was followed by another knee injury sustained whilst competing in the African Cup of Nations, with this injury unfortunately set to rule him out of the forthcoming World Cup.

MF – Jimmy Bullard – Hull City

The damning statistics:

50 Premier League starts for Hull City and Fulham over last four seasons (averaging 12.5 starts per season)

Fulham’s decision to refuse Bullard a long-term contract is looking more and more like a wise decision now, given the inability of the former Wigan Athletic midfielder to remain fit. One of the most popular players in the modern game, the decorator-turned-professional-footballer has been very unfortunate with the nature of injuries that he has managed to sustain over the last few years. A knee injury sustained in 2006 kept Bullard out of first-team action for nearly 18 months, whilst a recurrence of this injury on his Hull City debut sidelined the tousle-haired midfielder for nearly 10 months. A month and a half after returning to Hull colours, Bullard suffered a knee injury against Aston Villa that kept him out of the game for nearly three months.

MF – Kieron Dyer – West Ham United

The damning statistics:

22 appearances for West Ham United in last three seasons (averaging 7.3 appearances per season)

52 Premier League starts in last five seasons (averaging 10.4 starts per season)

No list of crocked players would be complete without Kieron Dyer. If one were to label him as ‘injury-prone’ prior to his move to Upton Park, one would have to create an entirely new word to describe his level of fitness whilst at West Ham. Dyer’s injury problems at West Ham have been so bad that club-owner David Sullivan suggested that the former Ipswich man should do the decent thing and retire. In fairness to Dyer, he suffered a double fracture of his leg just ten days after making his West Ham debut. Since returning from that injury, Dyer has suffered from a string of hamstring-related niggles.

ST – Robin van Persie – Arsenal

The damning statistics:

81 Premier League appearances for Arsenal over last four seasons (averaging 20.25 appearances per season)

In 6 seasons at Arsenal, never managed more than 28 Premier League appearances in a season

The stop-start nature of van Persie’s Arsenal career inspired me to create this XI in the first place. Blessed with exceptional talent, the Dutchman’s inability to remain injury-free has been cited as one the main reasons behind Arsenal’s failure to win the league in recent seasons. The former Feyenoord man is a rare breed of forward, one equally as adept at creating chances as he is finishing them. Alas, several of van Persie’s seasons at Arsenal have been ended prematurely, having suffered from ankle ligament, hamstring and metatarsal problems.

ST – Louis Saha – Everton

The damning statistics:

120 appearances for Manchester United in four and a half seasons (averaging 26.6 starts per season)

Missed 19 Premier League games for Everton over last two seasons

Undoubtedly a fantastic finisher, Saha’s opportunity to establish himself as a truly world-class player at Manchester United was regrettably destroyed by a string of niggling injuries. Groin, hamstring and knee problems meant that Saha had a disruptive tenure at Old Trafford, with his goalscoring record of 1 in 3 hinting at what could’ve been had he managed to stay fit. Currently contracted to Everton on a pay-as-you-play deal, Saha appears to have put the worst of his injury woes behind, having managed to make 57 Premier League appearances for the Toffees over the last seasons.

ST – Fernando Torres – Liverpool

The damning statistics:

40 Premier League starts for Liverpool in last two seasons (averaging 20 starts per season)

Liverpool’s attacking impotency in the absence of Fernando Torres is testament to the ability of the Spaniard; indeed, in his 40 Premier League starts over the last two seasons, Torres managed to score a phenomenal 32 times. Regarded as one of the world’s finest centre-forwards, Torres has suffered from hamstring problems several times during his stay at Anfield, with staff and fans alike irritated by the injuries sustained by Liverpool’s number nine whilst on international duty. The latter half of last season saw Torres troubled by knee problems, problems which threatened to prevent his involvement in this summer’s upcoming World Cup.

Dzeko apologises to Mancini

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has apologised to manager Roberto Mancini, after he reacted angrily to being substituted against Bayern Munich in midweek.

The Bosnia international was removed by the Italian coach as the Premier League team were 2-0 down, and exchanged words with his boss before marching off.

The reaction was overlooked due to Carlos Tevez’s refusal to come on against the Bundesliga giants, but Dzeko has apologised.

“I know my reaction was bad,” he told Sky Sports.

“I have spoken to the guys and to the coach as well. I have apologised for the reaction and Roberto has accepted it and said that everything is okay and that we have to be positive for the next game.”

“I was unhappy because we were 2-0 down and I wanted to win the game.

“It was something special for me to go back to Germany where I played for a long time. I wanted to do well and wanted the team to do well. Things didn’t go well for us. That is why I was extra frustrated,” he continued.

City travel to take on Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday, and are looking to put their slow European start behind them.

“Everyone has had a sleep and a rest after the Bayern game. We know we could have done better but it is football and you cannot win every game.

“Bayern Munich is behind us, we are feeling positive and looking forward to the next game. That is our new target now,” he concluded.

VIDEO: Saha scoops the performance award

Premier League veteran Frenchman Louis Saha scored four goals for Everton in their incredible 5-3 win over Blackpool, who were up 3-2 until the last 15 minutes of the match.

32-year-old Saha, who could have had five but for the referee’s failure to give Everton the advantage following a foul, had never even scored a hat-trick in England’s top flight before.

Saha has so far scored 8 goals for Everton in all competitions, all of his goals scored in his last six matches, performing as one of the most in-form strikers in England lately.

Saha ended last season with 13 goals for Everton, and was rewarded with a two-year extension to his contract, keeping in him at the Toffees until 2012.

Di Matteo ready to wield the Chelsea axe

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is ready to sell a number of his fringe players before the start of the season, The Sun report.

The Stamford Bridge side have been on a spending spree this summer, with Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Marko Marin already joining and a number of other new faces expected.

However, the Italian manager has stated that Florent Malouda could well be heading out the door, as he looks to trim down his contingent.

“Florent is back with us now and I will have a talk with him this week,” Di Matteo confessed.

“We cannot name more than 25 players in the squad so we will have to make some decisions. Pre-season gives me a great opportunity to look at the new players and see how they develop.

“The final decision on who will go and who will stay will be made at the beginning of August,” he concluded.

Meanwhile it is believed that Yossi Benayoun and Gael Kakuta will also been shown the door from the west London club.

Young Belgian duo Romelu Lukaku and De Bruyne are also facing loan deals as first-team opportunities are expected to be limited.

Blackburn Linked With €5M International Hitman

Italian press are reporting that Blackburn Rovers are in talks to bring Italian striker Vincenzo Laquinta to Ewood Park.

After having failed to convince Spanish legend Raul to join the club, rover’s manager Steve Keane has now turned his attention to the 31 year old world cup winning Italian. The striker currently plies his trade with Juventus and made 22 appearances last season scoring 6 goals, but he is now surplus to requirements at the Azzurri,  former Blackburn favourite Santa Cruz was at loan with Blackburn last season, but he has now returned to Man City after an unsuccessful spell.

Rovers will have to act quickly, as they are facing competition from Spanish side Real Betis, the Blackburn Manager is already under pressure by the Rovers board with 2 games and 2 losses so far.

Scottish Premier League wrap: Hearts close gap

Czech midfielder Rudi Skacel scored the only goal as Hearts beat St Johnstone at Tynecastle on Saturday.

The win enabled the Edinburgh side to close the gap on second-placed Rangers to two points and five behind leaders Celtic.

The home side were in front as early as the third minute after Skacel slid home at the end of a swift breakaway.

Suso Santana, Skacel and Stephen Elliott had chances to give Hearts a more commanding lead.

Steven May had a couple of efforts for St Johnstone, his second forcing a save from Marian Kello late on.

Hearts next face an away match with Rangers on Wednesday, with the Ibrox side having two games in hand over Jim Jefferies’ side.

The Tynecastle side were looking to bounce back from the midweek 4-0 defeat by Celtic and scored with their first attack after goalkeeper Kello collected a St Johnstone corner and released the ball upfield.

Gary Glen flicked the ball on to the overlapping Craig Thomson, who burst down the right flank and crossed low for Skacel to slide in and slam the ball into the net.

Hamilton and Kilmarnock shared the points in a 1-1 draw.

Irish international Connor Sammon, the league’s leading goalscorer, gave the Killies the lead after 15 minutes with his 15th goal of the season.

But Kilmarnock’s win was soured by the sending-off of midfielder Jamie Hamill after 28 minutes for a foul on Flavio Paixao for a second bookable offence,

Mickael Antoine-Curier equalised for the home side in the 79th minute with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Liverpool taking big risk by easing Lemar interest

Liverpool are currently not interested in pursuing a deal for Monaco star Thomas Lemar, according to the Liverpool Echo.

What’s the word?

The Frenchman has regularly been linked with the Merseyside outfit ever since the club’s failed attempt to bring him to Anfield on deadline day last summer.

Following Philippe Coutinho’s switch to Barcelona in January, the rumour mill fired up fresh Lemar rumours, but a replacement for the Brazilian was never recruited.

Now, Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasiley has suggested to Telefoot that any interested party will need to spend big to land the attack-minded player at the end of the season.

However, the Liverpool Echo reports that Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is not actively interested in signing the 22-year-old.

Could Liverpool be making a mistake?

If one were to pick apart Klopp’s team, the one area where many would feel did not need strengthening is the attack.

[ad_pod ]

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are thriving at the moment, and despite losing Coutinho in the summer, the Reds have not looked lost without him.

Lemar can play anywhere across the park in an attacking midfield role, and he can also play centrally and on the left of a midfield.

Liverpool currently have players more than capable of occupying those roles, but the Frenchman would certainly add a new dimension to the attack.

The Liverpool Echo claims that Monaco slapped a £90m price tag on Lemar’s shoulders, and judging by the voices coming out of the club, they will not allow him to leave cheap.

Liverpool should certainly be in the race for the midfielder’s signature, but they should be wary of paying over the odds when he is not necessarily a signing that they need.

Welcome back, Jonas… Liverpool, Celtic… Five other inspiring comebacks

Last night Newcastle fans, and the greater footballing world, enjoyed a truly fine moment as Jonas Gutierrez took to the pitch once again in the black and white shirt.

The Argentine was declared clear of testicular cancer at the back end of last year after a long battle and months of chemotherapy, and a 30 minute stint against Manchester United was his first competitive match action for the North East club for 17 months – he did play briefly for Norwich on loan.

Naturally, Gutierrez received a rapturous welcome from the St James’ Park crowd, and captain Fabricio Coloccini’s decision to hand him the armband was a touching gesture. The 31-year-old is not the only player to have endured a long lay-off though, with numerous players down the years having spent large chunks of time on the sidelines with injuries… and here are FIVE of the finest comebacks…

[interaction ]

Henrik Larsson, October 1999

Despite the Larsson incident having occurred back in the last millennium, any football fan who saw the event will still be able to picture the stricken Swede. The silky striker was involved in a tussle with Lyon’s Serge Blanc in UEFA Cup action, and it’s fair to say the Hoops ace came off worse. Images of the incident were graphic to say the least, with Larsson breaking both his tibia and fibula.

Recovery – Thankfully Larsson made a full recovery and went on to become Celtic’s all-time record goalscorer with a tally of 242. Amazingly, he returned before the end of the same season!

Alan Smith, February 2006

Alex Ferguson himself described the injury as one of the worst he’d ever seen, and with the Scot having been in the game a while, those words carry clout. Smith dived in to block a thunderous shot from Liverpool’s John Arne Riise, and the power of the ball allied to the awkward fall saw the once Leeds prodigy both break his left leg and dislocate his ankle.

Recovery – Smith missed seven months of action, and although he returned, his career never truly got going again.

Djibril Cisse, October 2004

The first of two severe leg breaks Cisse suffered came back in 2004, courtesy of an overzealous challenge from Blackburn’s Jay McEveley. The Frenchman’s lower leg appeared to buckle as both his tibia and fibula snapped due, in part, to his studs catching in the turf.

Recovery – Despite the horrible scenes, only a seven month lay-off awaited Cisse.

Eduardo, September 2008

One of the Premier League’s worst leg breaks came in 2008 as Birmingham’s Martin Taylor lunged in recklessly on Eduardo. The Brazilian-born Croatia international was left with a broken left fibula and a dislocated ankle, and prompted Arsene Wenger to call for the offender to be banned for life.

Recovery – Eduardo spent almost a year out of action and upon his return suffered a hamstring injury!

Petr Cech, October 2006

While the majority of horror injuries in football tend to revolve around the legs, goalkeepers are at risk of a number of other issues. And Cech’s severe head injury in 2006 shows how dangerous it can be to wear the gloves. The stopper came out to claim a loose ball only to be caught on the skull by Reading’s Stephen Hunt’s knee. Cech almost died as a result of the blow.

Recovery – To this day Cech wears a protective skull guard, but he amazingly spent just three months out.

A £22m transfer steal for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s transfer dealings in recent years have quite rightly come under considerable scrutiny. The highly-publicised example has been Andy Carroll, whose £35million move from Newcastle in January 2011 has to no surprise been a huge failure, with the England forward exiled to Upton Park on a season-long loan where his performances have been good but still yet to recapture his successes during the Magpies’ campaign amid their return to the Premier League.

But Carroll’s move was just the tip of the ice-berg during an era of irresponsible spending and contract offers under former Liverpool managers Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish as well as Sporting Director Damien Comolli. The French scout was also responsible for some of the Reds’ worst transfer dealings, including Stewart Downing’s £20million move from Aston Villa, despite just recording just nine goals and ten assists during his time at Villa Park, and failing to score or create a goal in his first 44 Premier League appearances for the Anfield club.

But out of the long list of transfer faux pas at Liverpool, which include Paul Konchesky, Charlie Adam, Joe Cole, Robbie Keane and more recently Fabio Borini and Jordan Henderson, has emerged a rare gem.

Luis Suarez, bought for £22million from Ajax back in 2011 is proving to be the club’s smartest piece of business since the signing of Fernando Torres for a similar price. The Uruguayan international has been setting the Premier League alight this season, with 21 goals and four assists in 27 domestic appearances, and at times he’s been a saving grace for Brendan Rodgers during his inaugural campaign.

At first glance, and certainly at the time, £22million appeared to be a fair price for a striker who had a prolific record in the Eredivise, and had a decent if rather uninspiring goal tally in his first 18 months in England. But this season, upon reflection, the Uruguayan’s price-tag is looking more and more like an absolute steal.

Compare his record with some of the recent deals in the English market, and it becomes obvious of just how solid the £22million investment truly has been. Sergio Aguero for example, cost Manchester City £38million, which broke the club’s record transfer spend back in summer 2011.

Although I would still argue its money well spent, considering the Argentine international helped the club lift the Premier League title in his first season, Liverpool have managed to acquire a striker for £16million less that looks set to match Aguero’s goal tally from last year, if not improve upon it, leading to rumours at the start of the season speculating a move regarding Suarez to the blue side of Manchester. Furthermore, Suarez has the possibility in his next ten games to equal Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler’s record of 28 goals in a single season.

Even looking at less high profile signings, it is clear to see that it was money well spent. Aston Villa forked out £18million for Darren Bent a few years ago, which could potentially rise to £24million, despite the former England international being half the player that Suarez has proven to be.

Similarly, Sunderland had to spend £16million to bring in Steven Fletcher, even though the forward’s final standing for a Premier League season has been just 12 goals. And of course, the move that was the prologue for Suarez’s move to Anfield; the £50million wasted by Chelsea on former Liverpool star Fernando Torres.

The problem I have with the majority of Liverpool’s recent transfers is that compared to their initial fees, the players have no real resale value. I recently wrote an article discussing this issue, which was received by comments arguing the contrary. One Liverpool fan argued that Stewart Downing could be sold on for around £6million, and Andy Carroll £12million -the latter being a rather optimistic estimate in my opinion – but is the collective £18million really an acceptable return on the English pairing that cost an overall of £55million, that have scored just six goals between them in two years at the club?

However, the same cannot be said for Suarez, who is reportedly a transfer target for almost every European elite club, most notably Bayern Munich and Manchester City, with prices ranging from £40million to £50million – not a bad profit for a striker who all in all has had one exceptional season for Liverpool.

And although Liverpool fans may not wish to admit it, selling their controversial figure may become a real possibility in the summer. It is clear to see that Suarez enjoys being at Anfield; he often plays with a cheeky grin as he hassles opposition defenders by nipping at their ankles, and there is no doubt he responds positively to the ever-in-song Kop faithful.

But he is 26 years old and must always have his career in mind. Champions League football is surely his number one priority, and although he will give his all this season to help Liverpool return to the promised land of Europe’s top club competition, should they fail to mount a successful late surge for fourth place he will have some difficult decisions to make in the next transfer window.

However, should the Liverpool talisman leave, the blame should not be placed on him. It would be wrong to brand Suarez as a traitor or a Judas. If the club are forced to sell, should an offer come in that cannot be refused, it will be due to the club’s other poor acquisitions that over time have depreciated the value of the team and lead to the Reds shifting from being outside title contenders and Champions League regulars to a mid-table side.

Although the Uraguayan’s departure would be a tough pill to swallow for Liverpool fans, and it would be a shame to see him move abroad as he has been one of the cornerstones of the Premier League this season, there is a silver lining. His potential £50million fee, of which over half would be no-strings attached profit, could be exactly the type of investment required to return the Anfield club to their past glories.

The Reds have a lot of promising youngsters on their books, and recently signed Daniel Sturridge and Phillipe Coutinho – two rather smart pieces of business. If the Suarez transfer kitty can be put to equally good use, Brendan Rodgers would have the freedom to build on the solid base he has formed this season and further improve upon it by bringing in players that fit the style he wishes to create and institutionalise at Liverpool. Of course, it will be viewed by many as a step in the wrong direction, but sometimes you have to go backwards to go forward.

Rangers fans desperately want to avoid Alan Pardew appointment

With the future of Rangers interim boss Graeme Murty in significant doubt after three consecutive matches without a win, all eyes are on potential replacements this summer should the club decide not to renew his contract.

One man who was previously linked with the role at Ibrox in the wake of Pedro Caixinha’s sacking was Alan Pardew, as reported by The Daily Mail.

He went on to become West Bromwich Albion manager but left the club this week after a dire run of form that has all but confirmed their relegation to the English Championship.

As such, there’s every chance his name will again be linked with the Rangers job, but he’s the last man supporters want to see.

[ad_pod ]

Pardew’s ever-dwindling reputation now precedes him and many Gers fans reckon he would be a poor appointment and are looking for a more exciting choice to lead them forward next season.
