Pakistan two wickets from victory

Pakistan on the brink of victory

Misbah-ul-Haq was poised to overtake Imran Khan and Javed Miandad as Pakistan’s most successful Test captain, after his team played the perfect game to finish the fourth day on the verge of victory in Abu Dhabi. Mohammad Hafeez’s brisk century – his first in more than two years – allowed Misbah to declare in the first half of the day, giving Pakistan’s bowlers at least 144 overs to dismiss New Zealand. They took eight wickets in 54.New Zealand’s task was enormous. The target of 480 was more than they had ever scored in the the final innings of a Test, and to secure a draw they had to play their third-longest fourth innings. The visitors made a bright start, with Brendon McCullum and Tom Latham scoring swiftly against the Pakistan fast bowlers to achieve New Zealand’s first half-century opening stand in 16 innings. The introduction of spin changed everything, though. Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah slowed down the scoring and took three wickets in 21 balls to put the magnitude of New Zealand’s task back in perspective.Babar had bowled a few economical overs when Latham, looking for release, attempted a sweep but top-edged to Yasir running in from deep backward square leg. Yasir then got rid of New Zealand’s most experienced batsmen, trapping both McCullum and Ross Taylor lbw with googlies. McCullum’s stayed low but Taylor simply plonked his foot in front of the stumps and played the wrong line. New Zealand had gone from 57 for 0 to 69 for 3 by tea.Kane Williamson and Corey Anderson were steady for a while in the final session, against Babar and Yasir, so Misbah turned to Hafeez and Rahat. The results came quickly. From round the wicket, Hafeez slid the ball across the advancing Williamson, leaving Sarfraz Ahmed with a straightforward stumping to end the partnership on 42.The possibility of Pakistan wrapping up the Test with a day to spare increased when Rahat struck off successive deliveries. His late movement drew the edge from Jimmy Neesham, who made a two-ball duck, and BJ Watling was bowled after the ball deviated significantly because it hit the under side of his thigh pad.Anderson became Imran Khan’s first wicket after he shouldered arms to a straight delivery. The batsman chose not to review despite replays indicated the ball had pitched fractionally outside leg. Tim Southee departed quickly too, but the ninth-wicket pair of Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig stubbornly resisted for 89 deliveries to take the game into the final day. That New Zealand had such a long haul ahead of them was down to how quickly Pakistan scored on the fourth morning. Hafeez had said after play on day three that they wanted 160 more runs, and Pakistan scored exactly that many in 32.2 overs.Hafeez’s timing was impeccable from the start, cutting and driving the seamers when given width, and capitalising on Sodhi’s poor lengths by using his feet to take the ball on the full and drive through cover. When Sodhi got his legbreaks to pitch right, they spun viciously to beat the bat several times, foreboding signs for the New Zealand batsmen. He dismissed Azhar for the second time in the match, lbw while playing the sweep, and later picked up Younis Khan in similar fashion. The good balls from Sodhi were interspersed by several bad ones, though, and Hafeez pulled a long hop to bring up his half-century.He continued batting aggressively after lunch and launched Sodhi over long-on to move on to 97. His century – his first against New Zealand – came off only 130 deliveries and Misbah called his men in 27 minutes into the second session. It was his fifth consecutive declaration and it put him on the brink of a historic win.

Argentina: Diego Vilner é torcedor do Boca Juniors.

Durante a segunda etapa, Jorge Jesus fez mudanças e alterou toda a equipe.

Marcos Braz, Paulo Pelaipe e Rodolfo Landim acompanharam o jogo-treino.

A classic semi-final with roles reversed

Match facts

Friday, April 4, 2014
Start time 1900 local (13.00 GMT)

Big Picture

It’s a world-tournament semi-final. One of the teams has been super smooth, stream-rolling opponents and making for boring efficient one-sided cricket. They have been unbeaten and without a bother in the world. The other has been almost dysfunctional, sorting out batting orders on the fly, relying on a crazy fast bowler with crazy eyes, a wristspinner, and jailbreaks even against minnows. South Africa against a subcontinent nation, then. Except that it is all inverted. India have played like South Africa usually do, probably their smoothest world tournament ever, but they also have the experience of going further: they are the current holders of the World Cup and Champions Trophy, and are gunning for this to complete the set. South Africa have played like a team from Asia, a bit like Pakistan, coming into the tournament uncertain, playing under different captains, somehow finding momentum when it has begun to matter.South Africa have made four world-tournament semi-finals before this without progressing further. Overall they have made 10 tournament semi-finals, and have progressed only once. Almost every time they have brought to the semi-final the form their opponents have brought to this one. They will be hoping the mad scrambling this time brings them better luck. And, by the way, the only time they won the semi-final, they went on to win the tournament, the 1998 Champions Trophy, coincidentally in Bangladesh. This classical tournament semi-final duel, albeit with roles inverted, is also a last opportunity for India to get one back over their tormentors from the South African season. South Africa will want to continue their domination of India, albeit in much more challenging conditions, after they were unbeaten on the tour. If India can win this, it will give them a measure of satisfaction after they came close to pulling off a great upset in Johannesburg. No team has been able to play its natural game against India so far in this tournament. Pakistan came unstuck against discipline, West Indies were not allowed to hit the sixes they like, Bangladesh never really turned up, and by the time Australia came up against them they were already a demoralised side. This is where South Africa’s unpredictability, even though this will be their first match at what has been India’s base, will provide India a challenge. It’s not often that you don’t know what to except of South Africa, but this tournament has not been about the expected.

Team news

Yuvraj Singh, who missed a training session two days before the match because of a knock he sustained playing barefoot football, is expected to play, said India’s media manager. The two other decisions to make for India are between Mohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami and between Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan.India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ajinkya Rahane/ Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohit Sharma/ Mohammed ShamiMany, including India, are expecting Aaron Phangiso to play for South Africa, but du Plessis said they will make the decision only after watching the women’s game before the men’s semi-final. Du Plessis’ comeback over Farhan Behardien is the natural change now that the over-rate ban has been served.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis (capt.), 4 AB de Villiers, 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Albie Morkel, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Beuran Hendricks/ Aaron Phangiso, 11 Imran Tahir

Pitch and conditions

The pitches are getting more and more tired, which is making chasing difficult, but there is some rain forecast for Friday, which could make matters interesting.

Stat and trivia

  • At six matches, this is India’s longest winning streak in T20 internationals. If India win this tournament, they will have equalled the longest overall streak, which belongs to England and Ireland.
  • India have never lost a semi-final under Dhoni.
  • AB de Villiers is three short of becoming the 16th man to 1000 Twenty20 international runs.

Quotes

“They’ll have to use it for themselves for our advantage. We are not looking at things like that or what happened in the past. If they want to do it, it’s their problem.”
“Obviously, the wicket in Dhaka is completely different to Chittagong. We played all our games there, and India has played all their game here. Definitely from a conditions point of view, they are more used to it than we are.”

Steyn 'looking good' for Tests – Donald

Allan Donald, South Africa’s bowling coach, has warned Australia to expect a fully-firing Dale Steyn from the first morning of the first Test of the upcoming series

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg05-Feb-2014Allan Donald, South Africa’s bowling coach, has warned Australia to expect a fully-firing Dale Steyn from the first morning of the first Test of the upcoming series. Although Steyn has not bowled for five weeks, in which he was given extended rest to recover from a rib injury, Donald insisted Steyn would not require any additional time to get back into the swing things.”We cant afford for him to ease into it. Graeme wants him to be full tilt right from the start,” Donald said, after the second day’s play in the tour match. Steyn bowled 8.5 overs to follow up from the three he delivered on Tuesday and came off a slightly longer run-up than the one he used on day one. Quinton de Kock, who faced Steyn early on, said initially “there was no pace there, he was just working on his areas” but Donald noted Steyn got quicker as the day went on.Steyn got rid of the Composite XI’s tail to finish with three wickets and show heartening signs that his self-belief is ballooning. “The biggest thing when you are coming back from a rib injury is confidence,” Donald said. “You do feel hesitant at first. You need to get back that confidence in getting through your action. But for a guy who hasn’t bowled a ball in a month, Dale is looking good.”Although Donald called Steyn a “freakish sort of guy” who can “slot straight back in” after a layoff, he also said Steyn, like any other bowler, needs to work his way back by slowly increasing his load. “Every day he needs to build,” he said. The comeback should be declared complete on Thursday. Donald said Steyn will have one more spell and promised it will be a nasty one. “He will be bowling quicker, running in harder off a nice long run up with full momentum,” he said. “That will give him that confidence and form that you take into a massive series.”South Africa need Steyn at his best because he will be the spearhead in what has been dubbed a battle of the bowlers, which Donald expects to be as explosive as it sounds. “Michael Clarke has every right to say he rates his attack No.1 because what a hell of a performance over five Tests,” he said, referring to Australia’s Ashes triumph.”They’re a good attack, they showed that against England. They have got variation in their attack and so have we. That’s where it will be fantastic viewing from the side to see how these guys match up against each other.”Steyn’s direct competitor, especially where pace and the label leader of the attack lies, is Mitchell Johnson, who will enjoy the knowledge that four of South Africa’s Test batsmen, including Alviro Petersen and Graeme Smith twice, were dismissed by left-armers in the ongoing warm-up match. Donald called Johnson’s recent form the “best I have seen him bowl in a very long time”.Donald was particularly impressed with the combination Johnson’s speed and control. “He never gave England a sniff, he was so tight with the channels he bowled and his pace through the air,” Donald said. “He softened them up with very good short balls and his follow-up balls were the ones that were very quick through the air. His overall control was the best I’ve seen for a while.”That type of discipline is something Donald was hoping from Wayne Parnell and he believes there was a glimpse of it in South Africa’s second innings. “He showed a lot of intent. There was presence in his run up, which is important,” Donald said. “I thought that stood out today, he had good pace and good control.” Parnell appears the frontrunner to slot into South Africa’s Test XI, which would add another speedster into what is already a cauldron of quicks. With so much fire and brimstone in the lead-up to the series, it is easy to get carried away but Donald said South Africa are aiming for the same kind of calm they achieved when they prepared to take the Test mace off England in 2012. “There is no point jumping in with both feet down people’s throats,” he said, the mixed metaphor only emphasising the point. “This team doesn’t stand for that. We built up very calmly towards England. And it feels exactly the same. It feel eerily the same.”Then, South Africa took a trip to Switzerland in the lead-up to the tour where they spent time with explorer Mike Horn. This time, they will spend two days in Hoedspruit, a town close to the Kruger National Park, where they will assist Mark Boucher in his mission to save the rhino. The getaway is aimed to give them perspective and when they return to fine-tune for the Test, Donald expects them, and the attack specifically, to be more than ready.”This South African attack – from where we started our journey against England almost two years ago, to where we are now – we’ve got what it takes to deliver. We know what we stand for, we know what to expect from each other and whenever there has been big questions asked of us in the past, someone, or the whole attack, has stepped up.” Donald believes it will be more of the same again.

Match even though Gambhir and Sehwag fail

ScorecardFile photo: Gautam Gambhir was dismissed for 31•Associated Press

The failures of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir had left Delhi in a precarious position in Surat but Mithun Manhas and Manan Sharma thwarted Gujarat’s probing bowling on a testing pitch. Their unbroken 146-run stand gave Delhi a chance to pull close to Gujarat’s first-innings total of 320 after they had been reduced to 49 for 4 in the 30th over. The morning session had been all about the anticipation to see Sehwag bat, as several people leaned on the railings in the stands to see who was opening, but were disappointed as soon as they realised it was Unmukt Chand with Gambhir.Less than an hour later, they leaned again to see if it was Sehwag walking up to the middle after Chand’s off stump was pegged back by Akshar Patel, but it was Puneet Bisht instead who took to the field.Sehwag did however come in to bat soon, as Delhi lost Bisht 15 minutes before lunch. The stand behind the dressing room reverberated with the chants of “Viru Viru”, and was accompanied by claps, whistles and cameras, but for the business-oriented populace of Surat, that was one investment that was about to go sour.Sehwag didn’t show the patience to wait till lunch, and charged offspinner Jesal Karia in the fourth delivery he faced, aiming for the long-on boundary. The mishit, though, went only as far as mid-on, where Akshar nervously wobbled under the skier for a few seconds, before sending the whole Gujarat team into frenzy. With that, any hopes that Sehwag may have harboured of making a comeback into the Test team, were further shrouded in thick mist.Gambhir was prepared to show more respect to the bowlers on a pitch that displayed enough mood swings. It was a typically western Indian red-soil pitch that afforded good bounce to the seamers, but with a number of deliveries misbehaving from time to time, the batsmen had to stay watchful all day.Gambhir survived against a couple that stayed low, but was dismissed with one that bounced a touch extra and caught the inside edge on its way to the short-leg fielder. The Gujarat bowlers, on their part, used the conditions to their advantage by bowling on the stumps. Akshar, who came into bowl as early as the sixth over, hardly erred in line or length, bowling a miserly spell of 27-14-24-3. “I was told by the captain about not to worry about the batsmen and bowl accurately,” Akshar said. “Had I tried too many things, it would have helped the batsmen. The pitch had enough, so I just stuck to my lines.”Wth Delhi’s seemingly powerful top-order all flattering to deceive, It was left to the old pro Mithun Manhas and the young Manan Sharma to drop down the anchor. Manhas, a veteran with more than 8000 first-class runs, tackled the spinners by using his feet, playing late, and by doing what he has always done in the absence of Delhi’s stars for the past few seasons – solidly defend. The seamers troubled him – he was twice struck on the box – but he hung on to score his 44th half-century. There were plenty of deft touches and back-foot punches, as he hit 11 fours in his innings. He also smashed two sixes by driving one over long-on, and the other over long-off.Manan followed a similar template by waiting for the odd loose ball to score, eventually hitting a six to arrive at his first half-century in first-class cricket. Manhas praised the resolve the young batsmen showed. “Manan is a rookie, he doesn’t think about the pitch or the spin,” Manhas said. “His head is clear; if there is a ball to be hit, he hits it.”The two fought together for 46.4 overs to slowly push Delhi towards 200.

O clube acatará as decisões tomadas.
