Latif targets Tests for Afghanistan

Rashid Latif has explained that his aim during his tenure as Afghanistan’s coach will be to take the national team towards Test status “within the next two years”. Latif’s turbulent relationship with Afghanistan cricket took a new twist after he returned to a coaching role with the national team days after stepping down as the Pakistan national academy’s wicketkeeping coach, and barely a month after resigning as Afghanistan’s batting coach.”Cricket is now more popular than the bullet in Afghanistan and I am moved by the interest and the available talent in Afghanistan,” Latif told AFP after confirming that discussions with the Afghan cricket authorities had led to his coaching placement. “Some of the Afghanistan players are so talented that they can break into any international team and my target will be to guide them to Test status within the next two years.”Latif resigned as the PCB’s wicketkeeping coach after being issued a showcause notice by the board for remarks the former captain made about the ongoing spot-fixing scandal on a TV show. Latif had also worked with the Afghanistan national side as batting coach but he stepped down after a month in the post in August following coach Kabir Khan’s sacking, citing irreconcilable differences with officials in the Afghan board.”They are an exciting team and my thinking and mentality, as a straightforward person, matches that of the Afghan players. They, like me, cannot tolerate wrongdoing. I will leave if my chemistry doesn’t work there.”Afghanistan needs cricket to heal the scars of more than 30 years at war. It is my experience that with more and more cricket, the scars of war will be healed. A lot of people tried to dissuade me from travelling to Afghanistan but it is just like Karachi and I had no fear in Kabul or Jalalabad.”

Poor batting cost us the Test – Sangakkara

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara admitted that poor batting yesterday cost his team the third and final Test against India at the P Sara Oval

Sa'adi Thawfeeq at the P Sara Oval07-Aug-2010Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has admitted that poor batting on the fourth day cost his team the third and final Test against India at the P Sara Oval.”On the fourth morning I thought in the first session if we had just tried to bat till lunch the ball would have got softer and we could have scored a lot more runs. But unfortunately, we played some poor strokes,” Sangakkara said. “We were a bit too tentative at times and the batting in the second innings by the seven batsmen, except for Thilan (Samaraweera) was probably the main cause for us getting only 267. Otherwise we could have batted out the day and put the heavy roller on today and declared.”We had a couple of chances today with Sachin (Tendulkar) and Suresh Raina. That would have made the match a lot more interesting. But the way they batted was excellent. They played positively and kept scoring runs. Unfortunately, apart from Suraj (Randiv) and Lasith (Malinga) we weren’t able to exert pressure from the other end, either to take wickets or cut down the runs.”Sangakkara stated he would have liked to have got close to 300 but added that, “given the situation we were in, it was a great effort by Ajantha (Mendis) and Thilan to get us to 267. Again you know a few chances went begging, which would have allowed us to get another 50 runs lead in the first innings.”Unfortunately, it’s been like that in the last two Tests. A few chances here and there and they ended up crucial.”Sangakkara pointed out the dropped catch by Tillakaratne Dilshan off Sachin Tendulkar as one of those key chances.”It would have been nice to get Sachin out with something like 110 runs to play with, 120 runs at that time. Those things happen in cricket, no one wants to miss a catch at this level when you are playing with so much at stake. The chances we put down in this Test and the last one, proved to be crucial and costly. We have to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.As far the bowlers were concerned, he praised the bowling effort of Randiv who took five wickets in the Indian second innings and nine in the match.”Suraj’s greatest asset has been his confidence and self belief. He’s got great bounce and he will have to improve on his control a bit more to ensure he keeps building the pressure with dot balls and wicket-taking balls. Once he gets that done, I think he will be even better than what we see him now as.”Sangakkara denied that the defeat had given India a moral victory. “Not really, one all is one all. It’s neither here nor there. I thought right throughout the Test we took more wickets and scored more runs. We created a lot more opportunities as well. But converting those opportunities in these two Tests wasn’t there. It was the only window India had to come back into this series.”

A dream come true for debutant Arnel

Brent Arnel couldn’t have wished for a more immediate impact on Test cricket. On debut, Arnel picked up his first wicket with his fifth ball, when Phillip Hughes edged to slip. The only problem is that half his family and friends were in the air, on their way from Hamilton thanks to his late call-up.”A lot of people were waiting to see if I was in, they were jumping on the quickest flight,” Arnel said. “Hopefully my wife is here. I haven’t actually seen if she is. I know my mother and stepfather is, and my dad was coming down.”I was ecstatic [with the wicket]. Dream come true, especially to get it so early. It was probably more a batsman error than my bowling, but I’ll take it. [Daniel Vettori] showed his faith in me and I was quite happy to get the ball quite early. He just said after Timmy [Tim Southee] had bowled two, he said BA you’re down that end, and just gave me a little smile.”Vettori’s smile grew when Arnel returned for a later spell and collected the vital wicket of Simon Katich, who was anchoring Australia’s innings with 79. Katich was trapped lbw to Arnel, who enjoyed nibbling the ball around off the green-tinged Wellington pitch and finished with the best figures of 2 for 70.The Katich dismissal left Australia at 176 for 4 but by stumps they had reached 316 for 4, guided by a 140-run stand from Michael Clarke and Marcus North. Arnel said it was a disappointing end to the day after a positive start that featured a sharp run-out from BJ Watling to remove RIcky Ponting.”We let ourselves down quite a lot,” he said. “We knew going in to the third session what we had to do and we didn’t execute the plans. We needed to put the pressure on and Clarke and North came out quite positive. They wanted momentum before the next new ball and they got it.”

Spurs team news ahead of Liverpool clash

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte will have a plethora of players back available for Sunday’s game against Liverpool after respective spells on the sidelines.

What’s the latest?

The Lilywhites haven’t played in two weeks after their Europa Conference League clash against Rennes was postponed following a viral outbreak at the north London club, before Premier League matches against Brighton and Leicester also postponed.

However, the likes of Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp and Lucas Moura could all be available after testing positive for the virus. As per Sky Sports, several of the nine players who reported positive tests are expected to be involved for the visit of the Reds this weekend.

Moreover, Spurs could also be able to welcome back Sergio Reguilon after the Spaniard suffered an injury in the win over Norwich at the beginning of December.

On the left-back, Conte said: “Sergio until today trained apart but he’s ready to have the training session with us tomorrow. The player is comfortable to be back in training with us. I hope that tomorrow he’s totally recovered but today Sergio was happy. His feeling was good.”

Tottenham could also have midfielder Giovani Lo Celso back. The Argentine hasn’t played since the goalless draw at Everton in early November after sustaining a knee injury but is reportedly back fit.

Spurs fans will be buzzing

After two weeks without their team playing following the viral outbreak at N17, Tottenham fans will surely be delighted at the prospect of watching Spurs play once again, especially with many key players set to return to the fold.

Facing title contenders Liverpool will arguably be Antonio Conte’s toughest test yet since taking charge of the north London club, although the Lilywhites had won three league games in a row before seeing the last three fixtures postponed.

It will be a tall order to get a result against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who sit second in the league and have won their last eight matches in all competitions.

However, after having a refreshed squad and a much cleaner bill of health than was the case a few weeks ago, Antonio Conte should certainly be more encouraged regarding his team’s chances of ending Liverpool’s enviable winning run.

Mykolenko to earn dizzying sum at Everton

Everton will be expected to go into the transfer window with conviction over the next couple of weeks, as they have been, surprisingly, one of the most underperforming teams in the Premier League with only five wins and five draws from their last 17 fixtures this season so far.

The Toffees have been linked to a number of players over the last few months, but there was one signing in particular that was picked up by transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, and the deal seems to be almost done.

What’s the word?

Ukrainian left back, Vitaliy Mykolenko is set to join Everton in January according to Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted out a transfer claim two weeks ago.

“EXCL: Ukraine left back Vitaliy Mykolenko is currently undergoing his medical as new Everton player, here we go! #EFC”

“He’s set to join Everton from Dynamo Kiev on a permanent move, final price around €21/23m. Personal terms agreed.”

Now Russian news outlet, YHAH, has claimed the full back is set to earn a ‘dizzying sum’ to join the Toffees on Merseyside in the New Year, with the report stating that the Dynamo Kyiv star will earn seven times his current salary at the Ukrainian club.

The report suggests that Mykolenko earns $50K a month currently, with a move to Everton improving his financial situation astronomically, as it is reported he will earn around £58K per week when and if he joins in the next few weeks.

Former Ukraine head coach Myron Markevych has heaped praised on the 22 year old speaking on the defender’s “desire to improve” in an interview quoted by the Liverpool Echo;

“By his dedication, his desire to improve, Vitaliy Mykolenko deserved such a challenge in his career. It’s really a real challenge for the 22-year-old, who has proven with his quality play recently at all levels that he is ready to test his capabilities in the world’s strongest soccer league.”

Bye Bye Digne

The signing of the Ukrainian international would only confirm further that Rafa Benitez has plans for current left back, Lucas Digne, to leave the club during the upcoming transfer window, with rumours already linking the Frenchman away from the club.

It would appear that making such a signing, with such a generous wage offering would only mean that the Spanish manager feel his differences with Digne as irreparable, which would surely leave fans gutted to see the Everton star leave after over three years and 127 appearances for the club.

It would clearly be an unpopular decision to let go of the full back, however, Benitez has come good with his signings so far for the Toffees, with both Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray joining the club during the manager’s reign, who also both happen to be the joint top goal scorers for the club right now.

Man Utd: Fans urge Anthony Martial to leave

A number of Manchester United fans have urged out-of-favour Anthony Martial to leave the club, following an update on his future by Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman’s Old Trafford career has never quite taken off in the manner that many predicted back in 2015 when he made a big-money move from Monaco. Martial famously scored on his debut against Liverpool but he has flattered to deceive too often since, despite his tally of 79 goals in 268 appearances for the club.

[freshpress-poll id=“378953″]

The 26-year-old has fallen increasingly out of favour at United, starting just two Premier League games this season, and a January exit could be on the cards.

According to Romano on Twitter on Monday, Sevilla are keen on signing Martial after he informed Ralf Rangnick that he wants to leave next month, although his salary is proving to be an issue. The Red Devils interim boss has reportedly said: “I understand him but it should not only be in the interest of the player, it should also be in the interest of the club”.

Man United fans call for Martial to leave

These United fans reacted to the update on Twitter, with many keen to see the back of the enigmatic 26-year-old, who has netted just eight times in all competitions since the start of last season.
