Alex Telles is the kind of left-back Manchester United have been crying out for

Manchester United fans will be furious after the Red Devils were beaten by Brighton at the weekend.

Three first-half goals from the Seagulls meant Romelu Lukaku’s strike and a late Paul Pogba penalty were little more than a consolation. Jose Mourinho was desperate to bolster his defence in the summer transfer window to have any hopes of catching Manchester City in the title race. He was proved right against Chris Hughton’s men with a number of individual mistakes costing them dearly.

The January transfer window is the perfect opportunity to right the wrongs of the summer. A new centre-back should again be a priority, but a new left-back should also be considered. While Luke Shaw has made a decent start after being given a chance in the first-team, United should be looking to upgrade. Reports suggest United will make a move for Juventus defender, Alex Sandro after Paris St Germain dropped their interest in the Brazilian. Instead, they should target his national counterpart – Alex Telles.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian enjoyed a sensational season in Liga NOS as Porto were crowned champions to deny Benfica their fifth consecutive league trophy. Telles was a crucial player, scoring three and notching an incredible 13 assists from left-back in 30 appearances. He made an excellent start to the new season, scoring and assisting in the 3-2 win over Belenenses.

Telles would be the perfect alternative for Sandro at a fraction of the price. With blistering pace and excellent dribbling skills, the 25-year-old would give Mourinho a massive threat on the left flank as the former Inter Milan defender can also be used as a winger. The addition of Telles would definitely mean even more goals for Lukaku as the defender averaged 3.2 key passes and 3.8 crosses per game last season (WhoScored).

If Mourinho is in the market for a left-back, Telles should be the man he signs.

Manchester United fans, thoughts?

Chelsea fans want to see more from Morata after Watford performance

Chelsea came from behind to pick up a vitally important English Premier League victory on Saturday, eventually overcoming Watford 4-2 in a pulsating match at Stamford Bridge.

After losing their last two league fixtures, today’s match was heading in a similarly disastrous direction for manager Antonio Conte, who saw his side go a goal behind after Abdoulate Doucoure and Roberto Pereyra put the visitors in front, cancelling out an early Pedro opener.

The Italian manager made an important change on the hour mark with Michy Batshuayi coming on for the ineffective Alvaro Morata to bang in a late double, with Cesar Azpilicueta scoring the vital third in between.

It was a win full of spirit that could turn around the recent poor form of the current champions and see them push on in the race for the title.

While fans were obviously pleased with the win, they weren’t pleased with striker Morata, who laboured to do anything in the match at all before he was hauled off for super sub Batshuayi.

The summer signing has scored seven goals since joining the club but has now gone three matches without netting.

Fans are now looking for more from him, believing he wasn’t standing up to the physical challenge of Watford well enough.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance…

Man United fans on Twitter hope Wayne Rooney follows John Terry’s lead

Not long after Manchester United toppled Chelsea at Old Trafford, Blues legend John Terry announced he would be leaving his beloved boyhood charges this summer.

While this may not be the end of Terry’s illustrious playing career, his departure from Stamford Bridge sees the final member of Jose Mourinho’s old guard in SW6 call time on life at the club.

Like him or loathe him, his leaving was likely to provoke reaction from fans all over the Premier League, considering the magnitude of his importance to England’s top division over the years.

Interestingly enough, the reaction of the United fans on Twitter has largely centred around former England teammate Wayne Rooney. Like Terry, the latter is one of the last members of the Three Lions’ ill-fated ‘Golden Generation’ playing today, though his career with the Red Devils looks to be over.

With Terry having set a precedent, United fans online have taken to Twitter to urge Rooney to do the very same.

Why Joe hart is being hung out to dry by Man City’s Pep Guardiola…

Despite his luscious locks still being the envy of people up and down the country – boasting a soft dandruff-free touch – Joe Hart has had a summer to forget between the sticks.

Going into the Euros, he was England’s experienced rock behind a defence that lacked solidity. However, up steps Gareth Bale to spoil the party.

As soon as that forty-yard free kick found its way into the net, Joe Hart’s summer followed the usual pattern of English holidaymakers around the country – it went South. Not only was he the brunt of the age-old football cliché – ‘my nan could’ve stopped that’ – but also, he became an object of ridicule across social media.

Since England’s embarrassing Euro 2016 display, it seems as though Hart’s flaky form has followed him to Manchester. Out to impress his new manager, Pep Guardiola, Hart’s second-half display against Arsenal in a pre-season teaser was one to forget – conceding all three of Arsenal’s goals, including a clanger to gift Chuba Akpom a tap-in.

Unfortunately for Hart, he is quickly falling out of favour with Guardiola. Dropped for Manchester City’s Premier League opener against Sunderland, he could only watch from the sidelines as last season’s number two, Willy Caballero, pulled off some blinding saves to deny the Black Cats a point.

To rub salt in the wounds, Guardiola is now lining up a sweeper-keeper who fits the bill for his famous “style of play”. Fittingly enough, it looks as though City have found their replacement in Barcelona’s Chilean international, Claudio Bravo, in a deal believed to be around the £21m mark.

So, for a number one who once stood ‘his favourite shampoo brand’ above the competitors for the England slot, he is now also more likely to be seen as a Gamble than a Proctor in the eyes of his new England manager, Sam Allardyce, who is lining up Fraser Forster to make a start in goal for his first game in charge against Slovakia next month.

Whatever the future holds for Joe Hart, he certainly needs some reconditioning and an increase in confidence that comes with a flake-free head on his broad shoulders.

A video was posted on social media showing the veteran defender signing jerseys for supporters. However, when one fan asked him to autograph a Madrid shirt, the 37-year-old waved them away, drawing criticism from some corners.

Ramos spent 16 years as a Madrid player and won five La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns, among other trophies, before he left the club to join Paris Saint-Germain. He then returned to his former team Sevilla last summer.

WHAT SERGIO RAMOS SAID

The defender has defended his actions after the video was released. He wrote: "Before that moment I had already signed about 6 [Real Madrid] shirts. And then there are people who auction them or sell them on the internet."

Erik ten Hag wastes Jadon Sancho's resurgence! Winners and losers as Man Utd manager's appalling second-half decisions invite Tottenham comeback

The Manchester United manager made a series of bizarre substitutions which played into Tottenham's hands in Thursday's 2-2 draw

For the second time in a month Manchester United squandered a two-goal lead in a crucial game after Erik ten Hag made questionable substitutions.

Two weeks ago it was Sevilla and here it was Tottenham, who fought back in the second half to draw 2-2, with Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min netting to cancel out goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

Ten Hag's most surprising decision was to take off a resurgent Sancho, who had run Tottenham ragged in the first half and could have had a second goal.

But he also took off Christian Eriksen, whose passing was helping United control the game, and Fred was a serious downgrade.

But credit to Tottenham, who bounced back from their 6-1 thrashing by Newcastle to grab a valuable point and lift their downbeat supporters.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

GettyLOSER: Erik ten Hag

The United manager has a habit of making too many changes and making them too early and this was not the only time his substitutions came back to bite him.

Tottenham's second-half comeback brought memories of the last-gasp capitulation at home to Sevilla flooding back.

But while Ten Hag had his reasons for making those changes against Sevilla, such as Bruno Fernandes and Antony being on yellow cards, most of his substitutions here made very little sense, apart from to rest players against Aston Villa.

Jadon Sancho was enjoying his best performance of the season and while Antony was not causing much of a threat, he was still keeping Tottenham on their toes and linking up well with Rashford.

Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst, the front men brought on, were toothless in attack and the lack of threat encouraged Tottenham to pour forward.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was on a yellow card and that might have been why he too was taken off but bringing on Malacia, who been flimsy against Sevilla, was as risky as leaving the right-back on.

From an ideal position, United contrived to drop two points and are now under extra pressure to beat an in-form Aston Villa side who have won eight of their last 10 matches.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Tottenham's team spirit

For much of the first half this felt like an arduous exercise for Tottenham fans, who were lashing out at their team and raging against chairman Daniel Levy.

Their humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle was obviously fresh on fans' minds and the players also looked to still be reeling from the result.

So for them to come out fighting as they did in the first half said a lot about the team's spirit and caretaker manager Ryan Mason's capacity to get them to believe in themselves, something his predecessors Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini lacked.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Tyrell Malacia

This may be the Dutchman's first season at Manchester United but his recent showings cast doubt on his suitability to play for the club.

When the team needed someone reliable to weather the storm, he again lost concentration, straying out of position and being beaten by Harry Kane to the loose ball.

He is making a worrying habit of switching off in crucial matches.

His lack of awareness against Sevilla to leave the ball and let it drop to Jesus Navas ended up paving the way for the Spaniard's fightback and to United's eventual elimination from the Europa League.

And here his poor positioning cost United two crucial points.

These are huge mistakes to make and unless he can deliver some big performances, his season will be tarnished by them.

(C)Getty ImagesWINNER: Luke Shaw

Harry Maguire's FA Cup semi-final suspension has been a blessing in disguise as it has allowed Shaw another run at centre-back.

He was impressive against Brighton and even better here, even given what happened in the second half.

He was on top of every Spurs attack, making a a number of important blocks and interceptions, such as when he chased down Son Heung-min and cleanly swiped the ball from his feet, halting a dangerous counter.

His passing was impeccable too, and United looked far more confident in possession than with Maguire.

The club captain was absent from the squad and the sad truth for him was United were better without him, even while playing a key player out of position.

Women’s Team of the Decade: Rapinoe and Marta in, Morgan out

As 2020 approaches, Goal picks out an XI of the best players from the women's game over the last 10 years

GettyGK: Hope Solo

Hope Solo divided opinion throughout her career, but never for her talent.

The former United States shot-stopper was named IFFHS’ Best Women’s Goalkeeper for four consecutive years, picked up the Women’s World Cup Golden Glove and Bronze Ball in 2011 and was named in both FIFPRO XIs that were voted on before her retirement in 2016.

After going home with a silver medal in the decade’s first World Cup, the error-free Solo got her hands on the trophy four years later, the highlight of a 16-year international career that brought about 202 caps and Olympic Gold in 2012.

AdvertisementCB: Wendie Renard

Few players have as many accolades to show from this decade than Wendie Renard.

Ten successive Division 1 titles, seven Coupe de France trophies and six Champions League titles show the dominance that Lyon have assumed over the last 10 years.

The towering centre-back has been key to that: helping them be one of the best defensive teams in Europe, while also scoring over 100 goals.

For France, she’s yet to taste the same success, but made the Dream Teams for Euro 2013 and the 2015 World Cup, with a place in every FIFPRO XI so far to boot.

GettyCB: Nilla Fischer

That Nilla Fischer improved European champions Wolfsburg when she arrived in 2014 speaks wonders of her ability.

The commanding centre-back, who can also operate as a defensive midfielder, would eventually become club captain, winning four league titles, five German cups and the Champions League in six years.

The 35-year-old has made the last three FIFPRO XIs, the latest helped by the Women’s World Cup Bronze medal she guided Sweden to this summer.

Add another of those, an Olympic Silver and three titles from her time with Malmo at the beginning of the decade, and it’s been a trophy-laden 10 years.

GettyCB: Becky Sauerbrunn

The United States have long produced reliable, commanding defenders, few better than Becky Sauerbrunn.

The 34-year-old was crucial to Kansas City’s back-to-back NWSL Championships in 2014 and 2015, named Defender of the Year for both campaigns, as well as in 2013. She is also the only player to be named in every NWSL Best XI since the competition’s inception in 2013.

For her country, two World Cups and Olympic Gold are the highlights of a wonderful 11-year international career. For the last three, she has showcased another part of her game, playing a crucial role to help her centre-back partner, Abby Dahlkemper, develop into one of the world’s best.

Najam Sethi pulls out from race for ICC presidency

Najam Sethi has withdrawn his candidature for the ICC presidency, allowing Pakistan Cricket Board to nominate an ex-cricketer instead. He however continues to hold the PCB office as head of powerful executive committee

Najam Sethi has withdrawn his candidature for the ICC presidency, allowing Pakistan Cricket Board to nominate an ex-cricketer instead. He however continues to hold the PCB office as head of powerful executive committee. The PCB has acknowledged Sethi’s decision.Interestingly, the ICC had asked the PCB to nominate an ex-cricketer last year in September but Pakistan came up with Sethi’s name.Sethi, the former chairman of the PCB, was slated to take over from Mustafa Kamal as the ICC president for a period of 12 months from July 1. The ICC after its April board meeting said that they would consider the appointment of Najam Sethi as ICC president during its meeting in Barbados at the end of June. Sethi was also briefed about the role of the ICC president and explained the responsibilities six months ago. With exactly a month to go for the appointment, Sethi made the surprising move. In April, he had offered himself as the interim president after Kamal resigned and was willing to fill in for two months before taking a full-fledged role from July.Sethi’s decision came after the ICC in its previous board meeting, it is understood, discussed encouraging former cricketers for the post from 2016 after what would have been Sethi’s one-year term. The post of the ICC president is merely a ceremonial and ambassadorial one and there was a sense prevailing after Kamal’s fall out that this post should be a held by an iconic cricketer for the image and popularity of the game. Sethi, a senior journalist and former caretaker chief minister of Punjab, is a direct political appointee from the Prime Minister in the PCB.”I am writing to thank you and the other members of the ICC for nominating me as ICC President for 2015-16. It is a great honour that I shall always cherish,” Sethi wrote to the ICC. “However, since the ICC announcement that from next year the post of the ICC president will be open only to iconic Test cricketers nominated by member Boards, I have increasingly felt that it is only fitting that this rule should be implemented straightaway so that one of Pakistan’s great iconic cricketers should be so honoured.”Under the circumstances, I am withdrawing my nomination to ICC Presidency with immediate effect and requesting the Board of Governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board to nominate an great Pakistani ex-Test cricketer in my place.”Kamal’s resignation from the position came after a public falling out with the ICC stemming from the India-Bangladesh quarter-final at the World Cup, when he had strongly criticised the umpires – even questioning their motives – over a dubious no-ball call that went against Bangladesh. Kamal had also protested after he was passed over for the duty of handing out the trophy to the World Cup winners, a decision he said went against his right as ICC president.

Keepers Wallace and O'Brien in record day

Mark Wallace and Niall O’Brien both took county records from a stalemate at Grace Road

Press Association15-Apr-2015Glamorgan 513 for 9 dec (Rudolph 111, Bragg 120) and 227 for 7 (Cooke 81) drew with Leicestershire 435 (Eckersley 147, Robson 83, Carter 4-95) and 141 for 3 (Cosgrove 59*)

Mark Wallace only managed eight runs against Leicestershire at Grace Road, but it was enough to bring up a notable statistical achievement as he became the first Glamorgan wicketkeeper to reach 10,000 first-class runs. There was a Leicestershire record, too. When Ollie Freckingham snared Graham Wagg he gave Niall O’Brien his fifth catch of the innings and ninth of the game.As for the match itself, Glamorgan’s Championship game against Leicestershire ended in a draw as they found the bottom club for the past two seasons in resilient frame of mind.Earlier, Chris Cooke continued his impressive early-season form by adding an unbeaten half-century to his first-innings 48 as Glamorgan batted their way towards a position of safety, allowing them to declare on 227 for 7 and setting the hosts a victory target of 306.At 104 for 5, that security was not entirely assured. Colin Ingram hung his bat out at a wide delivery from Ollie Freckingham and edged a catch behind. Soon afterwards, Wallace, also edged a catch to the wicketkeeper, this time off Ben Raine.Glamorgan’s victory hopes were boosted when Dan Redfern was dismissed without a run on theboard, Graham Wagg having him well caught at second slip by Dean Cosker, before Craig Meschede induced first innings centurion Ned Eckersley to edge an outswinger – again to Cosker.Cosker’s left-arm spin did prise out Angus Robson, the opener leaving a ball that just clipped off-stump, but Neil Pinner impressed his new skipper with an unbeaten 42 before Cosgrove and Rudolph shook hands with a maximum of 12 overs remaining.Cosgrove said: `”Every time we got challenged we fought back, we came up with the goods, and I couldn’t have asked more. We’re going to be aggressive this year and take games on, but from none for two chasing 300 in 50 overs on a last-day track we just had to bat some time, and we did that really well.`”If they’d set us 280 it would have been a reasonable chase – but that’s the way they played all game, a little bit negative.”Glamorgan’s head coach Toby Radford said: “I think over the four days we played some excellent cricket – to get 500 in the first innings was great with two centurions in Jacques Rudolph and Will Bragg. With three wickets down early in their second innings, we thought we had a real sniff.”
