Warwickshire held up by rain as Hampshire fight to stave off innings defeat

Rain held up Warwickshire’s charge for a three-day victory. Hampshire were forced to follow-on 285 behind and then slumped to 114 for four before drizzle set in early in the afternoon. They still needed 171 to make Powell’s team bat again and the loss of 60 overs in all probably saved them from a defeat inside three days on their first appearance in the Second Division of the CricInfo Championship.New overseas signing Vasbert Drakes quickly closed down the first innings by taking the last two wickets with a catch by Keith Piper to remove James Hamblin and another at slip by Dominic Ostler to dislodge Neil Johnson for 43.When Hampshire batted again, Piper claimed his fifth dismissal of the match – holding a thin edge from Giles White off Alan Richardson – and Drakes struck again with Ostler’s assistance in grabbing a slip chance from Will Kendall. But Derek Kenway moved to a half-century in 75 balls and put on 75 with Robin Smith before Dougie Brown reinforced Warwickshire’s challenge with wickets in successive overs. Kenway (52) and Johnson (0) were both caught by Ostler at first slip, leaving Smith unbeaten on 41 when the rain arrived.Probably the most cheering news for Hampshire – and they have not had much to shout about so far – was Smith’s return to form. After scoring only two runs in three pre-season matches in South Africa and four in the first innings here, he reached an unbeaten 41 from 78 balls. In the process he picked up five fours and pulled Neil Smith for six.

Spurs eye Dier upgrade who Poch would love

Tottenham Hotspur have made Joachim Andersen their top summer transfer target but only once they resolve their managerial situation…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who dropped a fresh claim on Twitter earlier this week, where he suggested that the Fulham loan star is firmly on Spurs’ radar.

He wrote:

“Tottenham are working to resolve the manager situation then the board will decide on new signings. Joachim Andersen is the main target as centre-back – he wants to stay in Premier League, #THFC want him. Many European clubs are interested too.”

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has also revealed that the Danish defender has “chosen that he would like to come to Spurs” but the North Londoners are yet to open negotiations with his parent club, Lyon.

Andersen is expected to cost around £25m, as per the Telegraph, though as Romano states, there will be stern competition from right across Europe.

Imagine him under Pochettino

This off-season is certainly going to be an interesting one for the Lilywhites as their search for Jose Mourinho’s successor rumbles on. And one claim this week has linked Mauricio Pochettino with a sensation return to the club.

The Argentine was sacked over 18 months ago and is currently at Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, though he’s thought to be open to coming back to the club.

Andersen is the sort of player that Pochettino would love in the heart of defence, especially as that is where Spurs need an overhaul the most.

As explained perfectly by The Athletic earlier this campaign, defensive issues and a lack of cohesion has been the defining theme of Tottenham’s terrible season.

Mourinho couldn’t settle on a backline, using over 16 different combinations, but you can hardly blame him when you’ve got to pick between Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez in the middle.

If Levy does manage to secure the 49-year-old, then he’ll only have the exact same problems, which is why a move for Andersen makes a ton of sense.

Despite being relegated with Fulham, the 24-year-old colossus has impressed massively, leading to praise from those in and around Premier League football.

For instance, ex-Wimbledon star Robbie Earle dubbed him “absolutely sensational” to his ‘The 2 Robbies’ podcast, whilst the Daily Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross hailed him as “magnificent” earlier in the campaign.

When comparing Andersen to Dier, there’s a clear standout, too.

The 6 foot 4 giant vastly outperformed the Spurs defender, yet it is he who tasted relegation. That says more about the Englishman than it does the Lyon loanee.

As per WhoScored, Andersen won more aerial duels (3.2 per game), registered more interceptions (1.4 per game), made more tackles (1.2 per game), and was more successful in finding the opposition offside (1.1x per game) than Dier.

His passing range is phenomenal too, having averaged a whopping 5.8 long balls per game, and that’ll please Pochettino and his system even more.

It means he not only reads the game better than the Spurs star but he also performed better, despite tasting relegation, in comparison to Spurs’ seventh-place finish.

Evidently, the £26m-rated centre-back is a huge upgrade on Dier, who was snubbed from England’s European Championship squad this week.

Levy could begin to turn things around in N17 if he were to land both Pochettino and Andersen as his first two pieces of business this summer. He must get this deal done.

AVFC: Fans react to Jack Grealish’s reported return

A number of Aston Villa supporters have been sharing their delight on social media at Jack Grealish’s expected return.

Dean Smith’s side take on Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at Villa Park on Thursday, looking to complete the double on the Toffees following the 2-1 win at Goodison Park at the beginning of the month.

Grealish has missed the club’s last 12 games with a shin problem, but according to The Athletic’s Villa correspondent Gregg Evans, the 25-year-old is expected to return to the matchday squad.

The club captain, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City during his time on the side line, is in line for his first appearance in three months.

Villa fans react

Evans shared the news on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, and it didn’t take long for plenty of Villa and Everton fans to react to the update.

This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with one describing it as ‘absolutely belting news’.

Spurs: Sanchez transfer value is crashing

Davinson Sanchez was once Tottenham Hotspur’s club-record signing but his value continues to drop under Jose Mourinho.

The Colombian, who is still only 24, was signed from Ajax for £42m in 2017 and was tipped for big things by then-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

“When we knew about the possibility to sign him, it was a massive opportunity because we believe he will be one of the best centre-backs in the world in the future,” claimed Pochettino. “That is why we made the effort to try to sign him.”

Now nearly four years on, Sanchez is at a career crossroad…

Value drop

Heading into the start of 2020, the central defender hit a career-high value of £54m, as per Transfermarkt but now that has dropped dramatically to €30m (£26m), according to CIES Football Observatory.

That’s a decrease of nearly 52% in just four seasons and merely goes to show how big a downfall he’s had under the tutelage of Mourinho.

It’s not too encouraging for a player that should only be rising as he heads towards the peak years of his career.

Current form

A lot of this has surely come down to his disappointing performances on the pitch, a mix of not being played enough and too many mistakes when trusted to feature.

After a three-goal collapse against West Ham earlier in the season, former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara urged the club to get rid of him [and Eric Dier] to talkSPORT.

[snack-amp-story url=https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-recent-gossip” title=”Read this week’s Spurs news, latest transfer rumours and more!]

“The back-four is just an absolute shambles. I don’t know why Jose keeps playing [Davinson] Sanchez and [Eric] Dier because it’s probably one of the worst partnerships in the Premier League!”

And similarly, Curtis Woodhouse blasted Sanchez, claiming he’s “just not a very good defender” because he “probably costs you 20 goals a season.”

The 24-year-old has started only 16 Premier League games this term, and has been snubbed by Mourinho for their last two outings, as per Transfermarkt.

Levy’s wrath

Sanchez is a wanted man this summer, so chairman Daniel Levy may not be best pleased to see a potential asset decrease in value so rapidly.

According to the Express, Sevilla and former club Ajax are keen on signing the £65k-per-week flop, who has also been dubbed a “real liability” in recent weeks by Kenny Cunningham.

Levy will have a hard task of recouping back most of that £42m but if anyone can drive up a hard bargain, it’s the Spurs chairman.

LFC: Journalist claims Konate deal is done

In recent comments made on Twitter, Caught Offside’s Leah Smith claimed that Liverpool have completed the signing of RB Leipzig centre-back, Ibrahima Konate.

So far this season, Liverpool have been extremely unlucky with injuries to their central defenders, with all three of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip being ruled out until the summer.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp brought in both Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in the January transfer window, however, with Kabak struggling for form somewhat – the 21-year-old has averaged a WhoScored match rating of 6.69 over his eight Premier League appearances – and with Ben Davies having yet to make an appearance for the club, it would seem as if greater depth is still required in the position.

And, according to Smith, Liverpool have just secured the addition of RB Leipzig centre-back, Ibrahima Konate, with the journalist stating on Twitter: “MASSIVE! Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool is DONE and will be official on May 1st, 2021! £32m.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Despite having missed a large part of this season due to a number of injuries – something that could be a slight concern for Liverpool – the signing of Konate would certainly appear to be an impressive one for the Reds, with the former RB Leipzig manager, Ralf Rangnick, stating that the 21-year-old is “so good that he could play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.”

Furthermore, if Smith is to be believed, the £32 million fee Liverpool have paid for the France U21 international would seem to be extremely reasonable, as this figure is only slightly higher than his Tranfermarkt valuation of £31.5 million.

Given Konate’s age, assuming his injury woes don’t follow him to Merseyside, this could be a really astute piece of business.

McLeish makes claim on Gers’ Jack

Ibrox legend Alex McLeish has predicted that Glasgow Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack may not be fully fit until the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

McLeish makes worrying Jack claim

The 29-year-old has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign. He was ruled out of nine Premiership matches earlier this season with a knee issue, and he has missed the last three with a calf problem (Transfermarkt).

Speaking to Ibrox News, McLeish has suggested that Jack may not be ready before the next campaign. He said:

“It seems to be an ongoing saga for Ryan over this season.

“In terms of injuries and one particular problem, maybe it is calf or hamstring. He is certainly a player who has progressed under Steven Gerrard.

“As have all the midfielders, I’m not saying they miss Ryan, in certain games they do, but they do have tremendous cover.

“For Ryan’s peace of mind, I think it will be great if he could clear up all of these ongoing injury issues, and maybe that can happen for next season.”

Blow for Gerrard

While Jack has been in and out of the treatment term this season, he has still been an important player for the 55-time Scottish champions. He has played without the 29-year-old in the side.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time he has struggled with injury. As McLeish says, it is a recurring theme with Jack ever since he made the move to Ibrox from Aberdeen. However, when he is fit, he is a force to be reckoned with – Gerrard will be hoping he can get back to his best before July, at least.

Gers’ Helander attracts PL interest

As per Sportbladet, Leicester City are interested in signing Glasgow Rangers defender Filip Helander.

Leicester eye Helander

The Foxes are currently flying in the Premier League – they are third in the table and are in with a very good chance of making the Champions League next term.

In preparation for the next campaign, they are said to be eyeing a move for the £1.8m-valued Sweden international (Transfermarkt). Aston Villa are also believed to be in pursuit.

Must stay at Ibrox

Helander struggled with a foot injury last season that kept him out for much of the campaign (Transfermarkt) and has missed yet to lose a league game with Helander in the side since he made the switch to Glasgow in 2019.

Steven Gerrard’s side have lost just two games in all competitions this campaign – Helander did not play a minute in either of them. The manager is clearly delighted with the former Bologna man, calling him “outstanding” (via The Glasgow Times) earlier this term.

At 27 years of age, he is arguably at his peak and still has a good few years ahead of him. Connor Goldson has received the most praise at centre-back, even being tipped to win the club’s Player of the Year award, but perhaps Helander is the true lynchpin at the heart of the defence. Rangers must make sure he does not leave the club this summer.

In other news, Rangers fans slam this comment from their Supporters Liaison Officer.

Celtic: Is this Tom Rogic’s successor?

This summer could represent a huge upheaval at Celtic. The Bhoys are on the hunt for a new manager after Neil Lennon resigned while there are others who could depart Parkhead.

Peter Lawwell has already announced his decision to retire, with the club set to replace him with Dominic McKay.

The Hoops are on the hunt for a Director of Football and he could have a busy few months with up to 12 players departing Glasgow.

One of those individuals could be Tom Rogic. The Australian nearly left last summer after Celtic accepted a bid for his services.

He ultimately stayed in Scotland but it is thought that clubs in Asia are still interested in securing his services.

Having scored two goals all season, his loss won’t be particularly great to whoever takes on the managerial reins. It will be important to replace him though.

Celtic could save themselves millions in the transfer market by looking towards one of their young players; Scott Robertson.

The 19-year-old has only made one senior outing for the Glaswegians and spent the first part of the current campaign on loan at Gillingham in the English Football League. He is now on loan at Doncaster and like Rogic, has played in a multitude of positions.

Now, it’s important to note that Robertson is more defensive than Rogic. However, he’s played in central midfield and behind the striker at various points this term.

On top of that, he has also played on the wing, another area of the pitch than the Australian is familiar with.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-on-celtics-managerial-vacancy” title=”Check out the latest on Celtic’s managerial vacancy!”]

Robertson’s only appearance in that position for Gillingham garnered an assist during a 4-1 win over Rochdale in December. On that occasion, he recorded four key passes, the second-highest number of anyone on his team.

With that kind of figure in mind, it’s not unreasonable to suggest he could play in forward areas on a regular basis and replace Rogic in the Celtic senior squad.

The Hoops have kept a close eye on his development this season, sending a member of staff to watch him on a weekly basis.

Gills boss Steve Evans noted in November: “I spoke to the people at Celtic and they think he is being educated here, they have sent people to watch him and I talked to them because I said I wasn’t going to include him, they are delighted with his progress.”

Evans continued: “He is simply a wonderful talent.”

The youngster still has plenty to learn but Celtic could do far worse than building their new era around young players, rather than those – including Rogic – that have let them down this term.

AND in other news, Desmond could sway Ajer’s Celtic future by hiring 47 y/o who’d be a “very good fit”…
