Insider loves Minamino to Leeds update

Transfer insider Dean Jones has delivered his verdict on the potential Leeds United pursuit of Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino.

The lowdown: Whites’ interested

This comes following a report from The Times claiming Leeds are among the frontrunners to sign Minamino this summer after the Japan international was made available by Liverpool.

The Whites have been heavily linked with the versatile 27-year-old previously, including under former manager and fan favourite Marcelo Bielsa.

With Jesse Marsch now at the helm in Yorkshire and having worked alongside the mercurial Minamino previously at Red Bull Salzburg, the interest looks set to be ramped up…

The latest: Jones on Minamino

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones suggested having already clinched deals to reunite Rasmus Kristensen and Brenden Aaronson with Marsch, a similar move for the 40-cap Japan starlet would be smart from Victor Orta.

He said: “People like Minamino might be the guys that fit into that.

“They’re not going to sound like world beating signings, but they might just be exactly what Jesse March needs as he kind of transitions his side and adds steps to it.”

The verdict: No brainer

For the reported £17million asking price, signing Minamino would be a superb piece of business as Marsch looks to build a squad to steer way clear of the Premier League drop zone next season.

Despite being somewhat of an also-ran in the major tournaments since arriving in England, the man hailed as a ‘special’ player by former Liverpool forward Luis Garcia has managed 17 direct goal contributions in 54 outings for the Merseyside giants.

During 2021/22, Minamino notched up an impressive ten goals and one assist from just 24 outings, hitting the back of the net four times in five appearances in the Carabao Cup, earning an outstanding 7.38 Sofascore rating whilst taking 3.2 shots on average per game in the process.

Supremely versatile with the capability to play across the frontline and in deeper roles, adding the dynamic attacker to the Elland Road ranks could be considered an Orta masterstroke so long as the fee doesn’t get out of hand.

Wolvrs set to sign Joao Palhinha

Wolves are finally on the cusp of signing Sporting CP midfielder Joao Palhinha, having been linked with him countless times in the past six months.

The Lowdown: Palhinha a long-time target

Wanderers are expected to make a number of new signings in the summer transfer window but no player has been tipped to move to Molineux more often than Palhinha.

Links dating all the way back to last June have suggested that Bruno Lage would make a move for the 26-year-old, eyeing him up as Ruben Neves’ natural replacement in Wolves’ midfield.

Now, the deal looks like it is closer than ever to going through, after transfer reporter Pete O’Rourke confirmed earlier this week the midfielder is a ‘long term target’.

The Latest: Transfer set to go through?

According to Correio da Manha on Thursday evening, Palhinha will be a Wolves player next season, with the transfer on the verge of being completed.

An agreement is believed to have been reached over a €20million (£17m) move, with another €5m (£4.2m) in achievable add-ons.

Wolves have already secured their first summer signing in the permanent capture of Hwang Hee-chan, so Palhinha looks set to become addition number two.

The Verdict: Perfect Neves replacement

Neves is clearly going to leave a gaping hole in Wolves’ team if he goes, but this update is hugely exciting, with Palhinha appearing to be a tailor-made replacement, having been hailed as a ‘very good’ player by Jorge Jesus.

[freshpress-poll id=“399044″]

Classy with the ball at his feet, the Sporting CP man enjoyed an 87.8% pass completion rate this season in both the Primeira Liga last season and in World Cup qualifying for Portugal, which is actually higher than Neves’ in England.

A hugely impressive average of 4.5 tackles per game at Euro 2020 last summer also proves that he is tenacious off the ball, so Wolves are getting themselves a strong all-round package.

Newcastle set for Christian Eriksen talks

A huge Newcastle United claim has emerged on their interest in Christian Eriksen heading into the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

Reporter Jacque Talbot has teased that the Magpies are going to hold discussions with the Denmark international later this month.

He Tweeted: “Some further details on the Christian Eriksen and Newcastle story. Heard a whisper Howe and the player set for talks next week.”

The former Tottenham midfielder joined Brentford on a short-term deal in January and is now a free agent ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Supporters will be excited

Toon supporters will be excited by this claim as Eriksen would be a fantastic addition to Eddie Howe’s midfield options.

The 30-year-old made a stunning comeback to Premier League football after suffering a cardiac arrest at the European Championships last year to lead Brentford to survival this term.

In 11 appearances in the top-flight, he averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.54 as he chipped in with one goal and four assists. The gem produced consistently brilliant performances whilst proving that he can still have a big impact in the final third, particularly when it came to helping his teammates.

He was at his creative best as he provided 2.8 key passes and created five ‘big chances’ in total for the Bees, ending the campaign with 3.73 Expected Assists.

This shows that he is capable of teeing up teammates with opportunities to score on a regular basis. The likes of Chris Wood, Callum Wilson, Allan Saint-Maximin, and any other forward the club may sign will now be salivating at the prospect of being on the end of his passes and crosses.

Meanwhile, Matt Ritchie topped the charts for the Magpies with 1.6 key passes per game – with Saint-Maximin in second with 1.4 – and this suggests that Eriksen would be a huge improvement on Newcastle’s current levels of creativity.

Bringing him in on a free transfer would also be an astute piece of business by Dan Ashworth. Whilst they will still need to afford the wages that he will demand, the club will not have to pay a transfer fee for his services and this can free up funds to be used elsewhere.

Supporters will now be hoping that the ex-Brighton chief and Howe can wrap up a deal for the 30-year-old as they will be excited by the thought of him delivering teasing deliveries into the box at St. James’ Park next season.

Tottenham: Sky Sports reporter shares ‘hopeful’ transfer update

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has now shared a ‘hopeful’ Tottenham Hotspur transfer update for supporters.

The Lowdown: Spurs set for busy summer…

Already bringing in Croatia footballing legend Ivan Perisic on a Bosman deal, Spurs are showing real statements of intent so far as they aim to back manager Antonio Conte.

The Lilywhites’ recently announced a £150 million equity increase which, according to reliable reports, will be used to reinforce the Italian’s options ahead of his first full Premier League season in charge.

Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni, Brentford big name Christian Eriksen and Man City striker Gabriel Jesus are just some of the names on Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s radar.

In what could be a real summer of change, Bridge of Sky Sports has now shared a ‘hopeful’ update after Spurs completed a deal for Perisic.

The Latest: Bridge shares ‘hopeful’ Spurs transfer update…

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Writing on Twitter in the last 48 hours, in reply to a supporter who asked if a right-wing-back and centre-half were next through the door, he explained:

“What I can say now is the club wouldn’t target anyone they thought wouldn’t join the club. That’s why I’m hopeful. I’ve just had to remind myself it’s May 31st.”

That statement is following on from a previous message where he claimed Tottenham want two more additions over the ‘next few weeks’.

The Verdict: Promising?

Tottenham, based off these messages from Bridge, appear to be getting a fair bit of their business done early and are aiming to fulfil Conte’s desires.

That alone is very promising as the club steer away from chairman Daniel Levy’s age-old tactic of doing deals late in the window to pressure clubs into quick-fire cheap sales.

Indeed, it’s safe to say this summer could be the most exciting one at Spurs for some time, given how long supporters have grown frustrated by Levy’s tactics.

Liverpool should sign Nkunku

Liverpool have had a phenomenal season so far winning two trophies and will compete for their third in the Champions League final this weekend, but all the success hasn’t stopped the side from wanting to strengthen their team this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has led his team to three finals this term and took the Premier League title race down to the last day, with the side playing every single game possible in the 2012/22 campaign, however, the age of their key players is clearly an area of attention the club wants to address.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will all be in their 30s by the start of next season and all three only have 12 months left on their contract, so it could now be an opportunity to look at their options for the future of the forward line.

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield this summer is Christopher Nkunku, however, the Kopites have tough competition as both Chelsea and Manchester United are also interested in the RB Leipzig forward, and when you look at his output this season it’s not hard to see why.

In 51 appearances this season for the German club, Nkunku has scored 35 goals and registered 20 assists with a goal involvement every 76 minutes played which is incredibly impressive.

The £64m ace who was hailed “special” by teammate Tyler Adams isn’t just good at finding the back of the net, he has created 16 big chances, wins the majority of his ground and aerial duels combined (51%), produces 1.9 key passes and delivers 1.9 successful dribbles on average per game.

That further proves that he is a complete nightmare for opponents and his worth ethic on the ball is something Liverpool would benefit from.

Last summer the Reds were named as one of the clubs interested in Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-Min who shared the Premier League golden boot this season with Salah, but after signing a new contract with the North London club the interest has cooled off, however, Nkunku could be a great alternative for Klopp.

After all, Nkunku’s most ‘similar’ player on FB Ref is none other than Spurs forward, Son, who bagged 24 goals of his own throughout 2021/22.

With that being said, FSG must work fast if they want to sign the 24-year-old this summer as other clubs are in hot pursuit of the player too and it would be a shame for the club to miss out on another transfer target that could bring a fresh perspective to the famous forward line at Anfield.

Villa suffer big blow ahead of Burnley game

Aston Villa have been dealt a worrying setback ahead of their clash against Premier League relegation battlers Burnley tonight.

What’s the latest?

Villa keeper Emi Martinez picked up a knock in training on Wednesday, which could rule him out of tonight’s game.

As per Birmingham Live, Gerrard said:

“Emi’s a doubt at the moment.

“We’re just analysing the situation that happened today [Wednesday] in training, but I think he’ll play and he’ll be fine.

“It was just a knock in training. We’ll analyse it. I’m confident he’ll be there. If he’s not there, Robin’s champing at the bit. He’s been awesome. He’s trained well and he’s ready and I’ll have no qualms putting Robin [Olsen] in if I have to. If Emi’s fit and he’s fine – we’ll assess him in the next hour or two – then he’ll play.”

A big blow

Despite Gerrard’s comments about back-up keeper Olsen, the loss of Martinez will come as a big blow to the Villans, with Martinez registering 11 clean sheets this season and making an average of 2.6 saves per 90.

Furthermore, he’s also one of the best in his position across the top flight, with journalist Joey D’Urso labelling him “world-class” last term.

Despite these metrics, the Argentine has faltered somewhat in comparison to last campaign, so it will also come as a big blow to a goalkeeper who will have been hoping to end the season in good form, with the idea of starting the next season in the same vein.

Though, with the update from Gerrard, it looks as though Martinez will be touch and go.

Whilst he may sit out tonight’s game, the Villa boss will be hoping he is fit enough to feature in Villa’s final game against Manchester City, with a win over the Citizens almost certainly enough to hand old club Liverpool the Premier League trophy.

Everton plotting bid for Memphis Depay

Frank Lampard is reportedly plotting a move for Barcelona star Memphis Depay in order to bolster Everton’s attacking options ahead of next season.

What’s the word?

According to reports from Spanish outlet Sport, the Toffees are among the clubs who are interested in the 28-year-old, with Arsenal and Newcastle United also keen on securing the services of the Dutchman.

His contract expires at the end of next season, and Lampard could be tempted to lure him to Everton as part of a possible summer rebuild.

However, valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt and with a wage of £158k-p/w, Depay won’t come cheap.

Depay would be a great coup for Everton

Everton narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League with a stunning 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Thursday, but Lampard won’t want to be in that position again, and his squad could be in need of an overhaul during the summer.

Signing Depay would be a solid piece of business, with his first season in Spain seeing him score 13 goals in 37 appearances despite Barcelona experiencing some considerable struggles during the campaign.

With Richarlison (11) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (five) struggling for goals this season in comparison to 2020/21, it’s clear that a new centre-forward is needed to improve the Toffees’ attack for next term.

Over the course of the 2021/22 season, Depay has generated more shot-creating actions (76) in La Liga than both Richarlison (62) and Calvert-Lewin (26) in the English top flight. The Dutchman is also effective from wide areas, putting in 61 crosses, with the Everton duo only managing 31 between them.

This vast skill set would no doubt please Lampard, and with former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman describing Depay as a “joy to watch”, Everton could do a lot worse than bringing the former Manchester United forward back to the Premier League.

Leeds: Is Klich’s time at Elland Road done?

There was a period of time when the mere thought of dropping Mateusz Klich from the Leeds United team was unheard of.

Axing him from the starting XI would have sent shockwaves around Elland Road and it’s clear to see why.

The Poland international was a dedicated and influential figure, one that typified Marcelo Bielsa’s brand of football.

Klich could do it all; defend fiercely but also provide a spark in the final third.

At one stage, he’d started 92 consecutive matches under Bielsa but the brutal cutthroat nature of the Premier League has gobbled him up and spat him back out for the media and supporters to tuck into their own feast of criticism.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

The 31-year-old stands proud at the moment as one of the best players to grace Leeds in recent memory. He is a promotion-winning midfielder and has played for the Whites on 176 occasions, scoring 22 times in the process.

His partnership with Pablo Hernandez was a sight to behold in the second tier and it’s remarkable he even had the chance to establish that connection, let alone become a Premier League regular.

Bought to the club in 2017 as Thomas Christensen’s first signing, he was soon exiled on a temporary basis.

Yet, enter Bielsa, a man who not only transformed Leeds but rescued the career of Klich, a battling technician who was in danger of throwing away his prime years.

The Pole was nearly out the door until a meeting between him and Leeds’ former manager changed things.

Sadly, five Premier League goals later and his career is diminishing again. Many at LS11 can be accused of underperforming this term but Klich is surely one of the chief suspects.

Dubbed “non-existent” by Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison at one point this season, it’s not hard to see why that assessment has been brought into play. Klich has recorded a SofaScore average match rating of just 6.69 which paints a sorry picture.

He has found the net just once all term – a strike against Everton on matchweek 2 – and his performances lead us to believe that he should never be considered to start again by Jesse Marsch.

His display versus Arsenal on Sunday afternoon was particularly ropy too, with the lowlight including a rash and cynical tackle on Granit Xhaka that prompted a yellow card and some minor handbags just inside the hosts’ half.

Substituted during the interval, it was a symbol that even when the going gets tough, Klich cannot be relied upon anymore.

He no longer has Bielsa to comfort and cradle him and in Marsch, perhaps he finally has a coach who can get the best out of Leeds without him.

He lost the ball eight times during his 45 minutes on the field, meaning he lost it every 4.1 touches and 5.6 minutes.

Furthermore, the experienced midfielder completed just a mediocre 79% of his passes and lost a whopping 84% of his defensive battles.

If that wasn’t bad enough, he made only the solitary tackle and played 0 key passes. His influence on the game was significantly less than young Lewis Bate who after being introduced in the second period, added a purpose to the Whites’ play. The highlight was a delightful cross-field ball into open space on the left that picked out the man perfectly. Right there we saw the future of Leeds; not Klich.

With that in mind, Marsch must take the bold decision to keep him from the starting XI between now and the season’s end. It could just keep Leeds in the division.

Leeds: Journalist makes backroom claim

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch could be about to reshuffle the backroom staff at Elland Road, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown: Settling in

The 48-year-old was appointed as the Whites’ boss following the departure of fan favourite Marcelo Bielsa in February and has set about attempting to retain the Yorkshire club’s Premier League status.

Currently just two points clear of the drop zone having played one game more than Everton, things remain precarious for Leeds heading into the final weeks of the 2021/22 campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-2/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite the troubling situation, Marsch could already be looking toward summer changes at Thorp Arch…

The latest: Friends reunited…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has claimed that the American could have one eye on a reunion with current Manchester United assistant manager Chris Armas.

The journalist outlined: “It would be a much better fit for him because, at the moment, it sounds like there’s almost zero respect at Manchester United.

“He needs to work with people that understand what he’s good at and give him the respect that he clearly deserves in his field of work.

“Jesse Marsch is somebody that knows him well, he’s definitely contemplating how his backroom team shapes up for next season and it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if he turned up at Elland Road.”

The verdict: Smart move

Should Marsch stay in situ as expected, regardless of Leeds’ top-flight status, bringing his former assistant from their work together in Major League Soccer for Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls would make plenty of sense.

As Old Trafford prepares for the arrival of Erik ten Hag, Armas appears almost certain to move on, and the Elland Road hierarchy should be primed to bring the 49-year-old New York-born coach to Yorkshire.

Regardless of the Whites’ fate this term, the board backed Marsch with a deal until June 2025 and therefore should be prepared to do so once again over the summer with coaching and player additions.

Rangers must secure new deal for Ryan Kent

As the end of the season approaches, Rangers have a good chance of securing some silverware.

They are through to the Scottish Cup final and have a realistic chance of reaching the Europa League showpiece, despite trailing 1-0 from the first leg of their semi-final tie.

One major problem that Giovanni van Bronckhorst faces, though, is the number of players who are out of contract at the end of next season. The Dutchman faces a big summer ahead, and one such player should be getting tied down to a new deal as soon as possible.

Ryan Kent was arguably Steven Gerrard’s marquee signing when he was in charge of Rangers. Having initially signed on loan in 2018, the winger made the move permanently for £7.5m the following summer and has been a star at Ibrox ever since.

The 25-year-old has played 169 matches for the club, scoring 30 goals and registering 45 assists. That is a very impressive return for a left winger and some of those contributions have been massive, such as his goal in a 2-1 win against Celtic at the end of 2019.

His performances have earned plenty of praise, with pundit Frank McAvennie claiming that the 25-year-old is “irreplaceable” for Rangers and the £52k-p/w maestro should start every game for Van Bronckhorst’s side.

The 47-year-old could build his team around the likes of Kent and Alfredo Morelos if he succeeds in tying them down to long-term deals. Winning a trophy or two this season could also be vital as an incentive to play in the Champions League next term.

The Dutchman will have the summer to rejig the playing squad and stamp his authority on the squad by making his own signings. However, his most important pieces of business of could well be the securing of key Rangers players on new long-term contracts at Ibrox, with Kent being a prime example of that.

If the 25-year-old is allowed to run down his current deal without an extension being agreed, it would be disastrous from the club and would leave the Gers faithful livid.

AND in other news, Wilson masterclass: Rangers must brutally axe 26 y/o dud who’s an “all-round shambles”
