Gers fans rage as video emerges

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy with a video of Scotland fans singing an anti-England song and the lack of response from the Scottish government.

The Gers ended the season by beating Aberdeen 4-0 at Ibrox on the final day of the campaign. On that day, they also received the Premiership trophy at Ibrox, which lead to celebrations from both the players at the ground and the fans in the streets of Glasgow.

A video emerged in the aftermath of the match, with there being suggestions the Rangers players had been singing offensive songs. Those claims were soon disproven (via The Daily Mail), but that did not stop Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf demanding players be sacked if they were found guilty within hours of the clip emerging (Yahoo).

In this case, there appears to have been no such rush from Yousaf.

The video was shared on Twitter by @AgentP22, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the Rangers fans had to say about the video below

Rangers fans love Edmiston House reveal

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been reacting after the club unveiled the rebuilt Edmiston House on Monday morning.

The season is now over and the Gers can look back with plenty of pride. They won the Premiership, their first major trophy in 10 years, and they even managed to go the entire league campaign unbeaten (BBC). In all competitions, they lost on just three occasions (Sky Sports) and reached the Europa League round of 16 for a second successive year.

It is a good time to be a Rangers fan on the pitch, and things are also going well off it as well. The club has unveiled the new Edmiston House, a place where supporters can enjoy matchdays both before and after the game.

The new building was unveiled on the club’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from Gers supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the Edmiston House unveiling

Watford interested in Robbie Brady

Watford are considering a move to bring Robbie Brady to Vicarage Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Mirror (via Football League World), who claim that the Hornets could make a move for the Burnley midfielder in the coming weeks, as the 29-year-old is set to leave Turf Moor at the end of his current contract – which expires next month.

It is also reported that Crystal Palace and Southampton are keen on the Republic of Ireland international, as well as Scottish Premiership side Celtic.

Giaretta should not move

Having joined Burnley from Norwich City in what was a club record £13m deal back in 2017, it would be fair to say that Brady has not quite lived up his price tag over his four years with Sean Dyche’s side.

This season, the £33k-per-week left midfielder made 19 Premier League appearances for the Clarets, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating two big chances, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making just 12.8 passes per game.

These metrics saw the 29-year-old earn a disappointing seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.66, ranking him as the club’s 13th-best performer in the top flight.

And, while the man Joe Dudgeon claimed has “something special” can also operate from left-back, a position in which Watford will be looking to strengthen this summer following the departure of Achraf Lazaar, his returns for Burnley, in addition to a quite frankly shocking injury record, would seem to indicate that a move for the midfielder would not be worthwhile for Cristiano Giaretta to get over the line in the coming weeks, even on a free transfer.

Indeed, when taking into account his hefty weekly wage, poor fitness history and disappointing performances, there would very much appear to be better a great many better options for the Watford sporting director to target this summer, as he looks to build a side capable of retaining their status in the top flight come the end of next season.

Newcastle eye Will Vaulks transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer transfer move for Will Vaulks, according to Wales Online.

The Lowdown: Newcastle need Willock back-up

Given that Joe Willock signing from Arsenal on a permanent deal is not guaranteed after his loan spell ends, the St. James’ Park faithful may be looking at alternative options in the centre of midfield, potentially at a cheaper price.

Jonjo Shelvey has often been criticised this term and will turn 30 next season, while neither of the Longstaff brothers have really kicked on, so midfield reinforcements could be necessary.

The Latest: Newcastle eye Vaulks

As per Wales Online, the Tyneside club are eyeing a potential move for Vaulks to swap Cardiff City for the North East.

Valued at £7m by the Bluebirds, he could be a cheaper alternative to that of Willock, should Steve Bruce’s team fail to sign him permanently.

The news outlet highlights one of his ‘trademark’ skills that the Magpies may be interested in, a long throw-in that has been a ‘potent weapon’ for the EFL Championship side.

The Verdict: Newcastle should not sleep on Vaulks

The Toon should certainly not sleep on a potential move for Vaulks, especially if a deal for Willock fails to go through.

His manager Mick McCarthy, who is also very experienced in the Premier League, described him as a ‘brilliant’ player and a ‘leader’ back in February (Wales Online), the latter being a quality that can be very useful not just on the pitch but off of it as well.

Nonetheless, considering the financial impact of the global pandemic, £7m could be a snip for the 27-year-old as he enters his prime.

Celtic: Alan Nixon shares Eddie Howe latest

Alan Nixon has shared a quite cynical update on Celtic’s pursuit of Eddie Howe.

The Lowdown: Howe closing in on Hoops switch

The 43-year-old is thought to be closing in on a move to Parkhead to become Neil Lennon’s permanent successor.

Howe has been out of management since August after he left Bournemouth, and his previous employers are currently involved in the Championship playoffs.

Reports have suggested that Howe has agreed to move to Glasgow and will take some members of staff from the south coast with him, with many now wondering when a deal could be announced.

The Latest: Nixon’s comments

Nixon, who writes for The Sun, was asked by a Hoops fan on Twitter on Tuesday evening if Howe could be announced in 2-3 days time.

He replied, admitting he’s heard that timeframe ‘a few times’.

“We have heard ‘two or three days’ a few times.”

The Verdict: When could he be announced?

Not knowing when a deal will be announced may not be ideal for some supporters, but, in our view, we can’t see Howe being officially unveiled by the Bhoys until the Cherries complete their season.

They defeated Brentford 1-0 in the first leg of their semi-final on Monday and will look to book a spot in the final on the weekend.

Should they get to Wembley, that could keep some members of staff Howe wants busy until the end of the month.

It’s not ideal, but it seems as if Howe is the man Celtic want, so they may have to wait a little longer until they can show off their new boss.

Newcastle may let Jacob Murphy leave

Steve Bruce must block Jacob Murphy from leaving Newcastle United at the end of the season amid doubts about the winger’s long-term future.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Murphy is not expected to become a free agent this June as he actually has another year reaming on his current contract.

But that is not a guarantee the 26-year-old will be at St. James’ Park next season, as Magpies chiefs are yet to decide on if he will stay at the club once the transfer window opens.

Murphy has been expected to become a free agent in June with it thought that his £25,000-per-week deal expires this summer.

Reports by Chronicle Live earlier this month also claimed that Newcastle are in active talks with Murphy over new terms, in an attempt to avoid losing the winger for no compensation.

Toon boss Steve Bruce has even remarked on Murphy’s impending status as a free agent, noting via quotes by The Shields Gazette: “I sincerely hope that we tie Jacob Murphy down.”

Should Newcastle retain Murphy?

It seems unlikely that Murphy would be under contract at Newcastle through to 2022 rather this summer with Bruce openly discussing his desires for new terms, but the doubt over the forward’s long-term future would remain either way.

Bruce must therefore lobby the Magpies hierarchy to retain Murphy, as the £3m-rated dynamo has proven to be a crucial player at St. James’ Park this season despite rarely starting Premier League games.

Murphy has only opened 10 of his 19 top-flight appearances this term and been left on the bench (7) or omitted from the squad (5) more often than introduced as a substitute (9), but he has shown to be capable of delivering a game-changing impact.

Bruce hailed the former Norwich City forward for his dramatic equaliser and claimed “he was arguably our best player” against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in October, when Murphy fired home a late free-kick to snatch a point.

It failed to see Murphy become one of the first names on the teamsheet, yet Bruce acknowledges the “big part” he has played this season and praises the forward for ticking all he boxes as he’s “young, hungry [and] determined to do well.”

That hunger led to telling contributions from the bench when Wolves visited Tyneside in February, setting up the equaliser in stoppage-time against Aston Villa in March, running himself into the ground against Tottenham Hotspur and earning praise from Alan Shearer after scoring Newcastle’s first at Burnley last weekend.

His performances against Spurs and the Clarets this month each came at full-back while his displays against Wolves and Aston Villa showed the offensive creativity he can offer, and why Bruce must block Newcastle from letting Murphy leave this summer.

LFC must sign Suarez instead of Vlahovic

Liverpool certainly need to sign a striker in the summer if they are to bounce back from their dreadful title defence this season.

As it stands, the Reds are set to score approximately 20 goals fewer in the Premier League than last season, with centre-forward Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino having netted just seven goals between them in all competitions.

Two potential arrivals with whom Jurgen Klopp’s troops have already been linked are strikers at opposite ends of the age spectrum; Atletico Madrid’s Luis Suarez and Dusan Vlahovic of Fiorentina.

According to Calciomercato, the former Reds predator is eyeing a move back to Anfield, whilst Milan Live has suggested that Klopp could also be interested in a move for the 21-year-old Serbian.

Whilst Suarez is by far the older of the two forwards, he should certainly be the striker the Reds recruit in the summer. Not only has he found the net more often this season – 19 to Vlahovic’s 15 in Serie A – the Uruguayan’s statistics continue to see him outperform the younger marksman.

According to WhoScored, the 34-year-old attempts more shots per game than the current Fiorentina man with 3.2 compared to 2.4. Meanwhile, Suarez is far more of a creative influence on his side, averaging 0.8 key passes per 90 minutes, Vlahovic can only average 0.4.

The former Liverpool forward’s form has often seen him praised by his team-mates. Atletico winger Angel Correa has labelled the Uruguayan a “great forward” with “excellent” characteristics.

Furthermore, Suarez’s return to Anfield would be much more affordable for Liverpool. Rated by Transfermarkt at £13.5m, it is reported that he could leave his current employers on a free transfer. On the other hand, it is suggested that Fiorentina have slapped a €40m (£35m) fee on their Serbian forward.

This would leave the Reds with far more to spend on other areas of the squad, a huge benefit in a window which is surely set to be affected by the financial impacts of the global pandemic.

Whilst both strikers would be excellent signings for Klopp as he attempts to rectify the club’s lack of goals, Suarez should certainly be the preferred option for the club in the summer transfer window if they can only obtain one.

Gers’ Helander attracts PL interest

As per Sportbladet, Leicester City are interested in signing Glasgow Rangers defender Filip Helander.

Leicester eye Helander

The Foxes are currently flying in the Premier League – they are third in the table and are in with a very good chance of making the Champions League next term.

In preparation for the next campaign, they are said to be eyeing a move for the £1.8m-valued Sweden international (Transfermarkt). Aston Villa are also believed to be in pursuit.

Must stay at Ibrox

Helander struggled with a foot injury last season that kept him out for much of the campaign (Transfermarkt) and has missed yet to lose a league game with Helander in the side since he made the switch to Glasgow in 2019.

Steven Gerrard’s side have lost just two games in all competitions this campaign – Helander did not play a minute in either of them. The manager is clearly delighted with the former Bologna man, calling him “outstanding” (via The Glasgow Times) earlier this term.

At 27 years of age, he is arguably at his peak and still has a good few years ahead of him. Connor Goldson has received the most praise at centre-back, even being tipped to win the club’s Player of the Year award, but perhaps Helander is the true lynchpin at the heart of the defence. Rangers must make sure he does not leave the club this summer.

Celtic: Howe update will delight Desmond

Celtic have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Eddie Howe this week…

What’s the word?

According to The Scottish Sun, the incoming Hoops boss has already started work on summer transfer targets, with the 43-year-old making Joshua King one of his first signings.

The pair were together at AFC Bournemouth and it is thought that Howe sees his former talisman as an ideal successor to Odsonne Edouard, who is unlikely to stick around at Parkhead past the current campaign.

King has struggled for game time at Everton since his January deadline day move, failing to start a single match and could well depart at the end of his £45k-per-week contract, opening the door for a reunion in Glasgow.

Source of encouragement

Howe is yet to be confirmed as Neil Lennon’s successor but is expected to be announced as early as next week, though he may not take the helm until the summer.

The former Cherries genius has a huge rebuild on his hands – long-serving skipper Scott Brown is following CEO Peter Lawwell out the door, four loan players are set to return to their parent clubs and several key stars are either entering the final 12 months of their contracts or are wanted by other teams.

So it’s hugely encouraging that he’s already ‘working flat out behind the scenes,’ as per the aforementioned report. This will please majority shareholder Dermot Desmond immensely, especially after the mooted setback earlier this week.

It suggests that Howe is set on taking the job, and that means Desmond has got his man, barring that official announcement, having been questioned over his own status recently.

He won’t be selling his shares as he’s clearly wanting to be a big part of this new era that Celtic Park is about to embark on.

Incoming CEO Dominic McKay will be taking up his role three months earlier than expected, so it’s now a case of getting Howe through the door sooner rather than later.

But the fact that the ex-Bournemouth manager is already eyeing up a target in King will prove to be music to the ears of many. It’s hugely encouraging and surely means the deal is all but done.

He’ll need to hit the ground running this summer and getting ahead now could be a masterstroke in the long run.

AND in other news, Howe and McKay could instantly save Celtic millions this summer…

West Ham land Ogbonna injury boost

David Moyes is hopeful that West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna will step up his recovery from injury with a view to returning after the March international break.

The Italian has missed his side’s last four Premier League games after sustaining a high ankle sprain during the first half of last month’s FA Cup fifth round defeat to Manchester United.

Ogbonna had played all bar 27 minutes of the Irons’ top-flight campaign before missing the 3-0 win over Sheffield United, having been a staple of the backline at the London Stadium with 23 starts.

West Ham visit Manchester United on Sunday with Ogbonna now one of several potential absentees, with Moyes alert to “a couple of slight doubts” after a slew of minor injuries.

Ogbonna was required to wear a protective boot on his left ankle to protect the 13-cap international from any further damage, but is making good progress towards an April return.

“Angelo is doing great,” Moyes said on Friday. “He’s back in the gym regularly. He’s out of his boot and we’re expecting him to start some running on the AlterG, which is the machine that takes a bit of your body weight off.

“He’s coming along and I’m hoping that, maybe by the end of the international break, we might have him back on the grass in some capacity. There are signs that we’re getting him back.”

Moyes has also welcomed Arthur Masuaku back to training this week, having been without the DR Congo international since Manchester United visited West Ham on December 5 after undergoing career-saving knee surgery.

“Arthur’s trained two or three days this week with the U23s and trained with me for a couple of days now, so Arthur’s getting much closer to match fitness and all-round fitness generally,” the Hammers boss added.

Moyes having Ogbonna back after the March international break will come as a huge boost for West Ham in the London Stadium natives’ push for a top four finish, with Champions League football a distinct possibility for a club who narrowly staved off the threat of relegation just last season.

The Hammers enter the weekend only two points behind Chelsea in the last of the Premier League’s qualifying places, albeit with a game in hand over the Stamford Bridge outfit, who visit Leeds United in the early Saturday afternoon kick-off.

Having a game in hand could prove crucial with West Ham facing a difficult end-of-season run, with matches against fellow European football hopefuls Arsenal, Leicester City, Chelsea and Everton to come after visiting Manchester United on Sunday.

Moyes will no doubt be keen to have Ogbonna back available for those games, with the centre-half able to have a big say in proceedings, having lauded the £4.5m-rated enforcer as a “magnificent” and “really important” leader last month.

Ogbonna had also begun to build a promising relationship with Watford loanee Craig Dawson, which former England international Steve Howey believes had allowed the pair to get the most out of one another.

“It’s always good when you’ve got that good understanding and a bond in a relationship with your partner back there,” he told Football FanCast. “You can understand what he’s really strong at, what he’s kind of a little bit susceptible to, you can kind of read each other’s minds a little bit.”

AND in other news, West Ham are keen to sign a “special talent” who his manager feels “privileged” to have in his squad…
