Entenda o Caso

Pattinson under back stress cloud

Twenty20 may be removed from James Pattinson’s bowling rehab diet after it emerged that the fast bowler is suffering from a recurrence of back stress injury and has no certain return date for the resumption of his international career

Twenty20 may be removed from James Pattinson’s rehab diet after it emerged that the fast bowler is suffering from a recurrence of back stress trouble and has no certain return date for the resumption of his international career.Among the re-signed pace bowling mentor Craig McDermott’s more pressing assignments is to oversee further work to refine the bowling action of Pattinson, who once again fell prey to back problems following his lively return to the Test team in the deciding Test match of the South Africa series at Newlands in March. While initially Cricket Australia described Pattinson as simply complaining of “lower back soreness”, further examination has revealed evidence of stress on his back. McDermott is adamant that at the age of 24, Pattinson should not be rushed back into service until a sustainable technique can be put into place.”With Patto it’ll depend how he heals, first and foremost. That’s got to improve from a clinical point of view before we get to the path we’ll go down with his technical side of it,” McDermott told ESPNcricinfo. “The timeline on that hasn’t even been determined yet, so we’ll just see how he progresses over the next few months.”I want to make sure we take our time and get it right. He’s obviously having some sort of trouble with his skeletal make up that’s not coping at his age. He’s almost at the age where you’d think he’s not going to get too many more problems, but everyone’s different. Patto does bowl fast, he’s not a 130kph bowler, so we’ve got to make sure we get him right and take our time to bring him back nice and slowly.”Pattinson’s performance in the match was particularly notable considering it was his first red ball fixture of any kind since suffering a stress fracture in the Lord’s Test last year. Unready for the first bracket of Sheffield Shield matches and then in South Africa for the second, Pattinson was compelled to make his return in the Big Bash League with the Melbourne Renegades.Efforts to improve his technique and groove it during long-from cricket were thus frustrated by a format in which pacemen are obliged to bowl at top speed but also change their action on a ball-to-ball basis for slower deliveries, wide yorkers and other variations.”There’s been some discussion about bringing him back through club cricket and formats where he can settle into a rhythm,” McDermott said. “T20 cricket is always difficult to bring blokes back through, because they’re under the pump, bowling different balls all the time.”It’s a yorker, then a slower-ball bouncer, then a good-length ball or a wide yorker. And if they’re getting whacked by the batsmen they’re not going to bowl at 80% and build things up gradually. It’s not in their make-up, and it’s certainly not in Patto’s make-up because he’s such a competitor.”Elsewhere Ryan Harris is continuing his recovery from overdue knee surgery, though McDermott agreed with the 34-year-old paceman that a return in time for Australia’s next Test match assignment against Pakistan in the UAE would be doubtful. More likely is Harris’ participation in the 2015 World Cup, having not played an ODI since 2012 as the selectors sought to preserve his body.”He’s definitely touch and go for Dubai, we’ve just got to see how his knee goes over the next few months. You’ve got to start bowling workloads about six or eight weeks before that to get right for Test match level,” McDermott said. “We’ve just got to monitor him to see how his knee’s coping with his rehabilitation, and see if it’s possible to get him up for there.”I don’t think there’s any point rushing Ryano either, we’ve got a lot of cricket with India, World Cup, West Indies and the Ashes, we’ve got to make sure he’s 100% when he comes back. If he’s fully fit he’s certainly someone who can quite easily play in the one day team. He’s got all the firepower, the variations and he’s very experienced. I’m sure if he’s fit he’ll be certainly looked at.”

Durante a segunda etapa, Jorge Jesus fez mudanças e alterou toda a equipe.

Marcos Braz, Paulo Pelaipe e Rodolfo Landim acompanharam o jogo-treino.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resigned as the Gujarat Cricket Association president, setting up, in effect, his trusted lieutenant Amit Shah to take over the post.Ever since Modi, whose Bharatiya Janata Party swept the general elections, was sworn in as the prime minister on May 26, he was expected to end his five-year regime as the GCA chief. GCA secretary Rajesh Patel confirmed that Modi had stepped down on Friday: “He has submitted his letter today and it has been decided that the GCA special general meeting will decide the new president on June 13.”Though Patel was reluctant to discuss Modi’s replacement, it is believed that Modi is making way for Shah to take charge of GCA. Shah, who has been a GCA vice-president ever since Modi took charge of GCA in September 2009, is expected to be appointed a BCCI vice-president during the BCCI elections in September.

Sri Lanka take big lead despite Amla ton

Hashim Amla made his 22nd Test century to help South Africa avoid the follow-on, but he couldn’t prevent Sri Lanka from taking a 139-run lead

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran26-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
South Africa need only a draw at the SSC to regain the coveted No. 1 Test ranking and they batted as if that was their sole objective. Since the start of the innings midway through the second day, their batsmen have only been bothered about consuming time, deeming run-scoring as an unnecessary frivolity. Hashim Amla ground his way to his 22nd Test century, the first by a South African captain in Sri Lanka, and the second slowest of his career to avert the follow-on but not a 139-run first-innings deficit. The other batsmen didn’t have the runs to match the amounts of time they spent in the middle which meant that Sri Lanka’s spinners were never put under pressure and were allowed to wheel away accurate over after accurate over. The pitch was no minefield, which made the South African strategy even harder to comprehend. There was turn, but nothing alarming. There were no grubbers or high-jumpers. And South Africa have some of the world’s best batsmen against spin.JP Duminy’s 58-ball 3 was the South African innings in microcosm. He wasn’t scoring runs, but he wasn’t getting beaten, nor was he in serious trouble. There was a severe lack of intent though as he blocked or padded away everything that he could. He played 49 consecutive dot balls, before finally missing one and was stumped after the ball deflected off his pad.Dilruwan Perera has two five-fors and two four-fors in his first five Tests•AFP

The day began with Sri Lanka using their only quick to bounce the batsmen from round the wicket, not a tactic that flustered the overnight pair of Amla and AB de Villiers much. Suranga Lakmal overstepped regularly as well and was struck for three fours in an over by de Villiers. That made it five boundaries in seven deliveries as Amla had just put away a wayward Ajantha Mendis for a couple of fours. After dead-batting almost everything on Friday, South Africa started the day with more vigour. However, once Sri Lanka decided to give their two best bowlers, Dilruwan Perera and Rangana Herath, extended spells, the scoring rate went comatose again. South Africa had only made 14 runs in nine overs before Perera made the breakthroughs that derailed them.Perera isn’t a big turner of the ball, but he got it to spin just enough to beat the inside edge as de Villiers looked to defend and got him lbw. Two balls later, he got one to spin just enough again to beat the outside edge of the left-handed Quinton de Kock and take the off stump. In a matter of minutes, South Africa had squandered what they gained over hours of attritional cricket. In football, all-out defence is seen as a safe strategy. Here, South Africa’s all-out defence is a high-risk tactic as that Perera over showed.Still, Amla persevered, solid as ever. He unveiled some breathtaking inside-out drives against the spinners, typical whiplash punches off Lakmal, got both pads in front of the stumps to make an impassable wall if the ball pitched outside leg, and generally hanging on the back foot and trusting himself to adjust well enough to keep out any danger. It was a monumental effort from him, the sixth longest by an overseas batsman in Sri Lanka and he remained unconquered after facing 382 deliveries. He has consumed more than 350 deliveries in an innings five times, and he has remained unbeaten on all those occasions. For a while, it looked as if South Africa might struggle to avoid the follow-on, even with Amla going strong. Their cricketing strategy would have been a complete failure if they had been forced to bat again. That didn’t come to pass, though, as the tail gamely supported Amla. Dale Steyn took up 71 deliveries before holing out going for a third six, Imran Tahir used up an hour after tea before South Africa were bowled out near the close of play.Though Sri Lanka have a sizeable lead, one concern for them is the workload of their main spinners, Herath and Perera. Both have already bowled more than 40 overs in the match, after sharing more than 150 overs in Galle. Mendis is the third specialist spinner but he struggled for line and length, forcing Mathews to give him only short spells. Sri Lanka will need more from him as they press for a series-levelling win over the next two days.

Mid-tour changes 'tough on everyone' – Dravid

Former India captain Rahul Dravid says he would have preferred to wait till the end of India’s tour of England before making changes to the support staff

Gaurav Kalra22-Aug-2014Former India captain Rahul Dravid says he would have preferred to wait till the end of India’s tour of England before making changes to the support staff. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Dravid said taking such a decision in the middle of a tour was “tough on everyone concerned”.”You don’t have problems if people want to make changes, it’s part of professional sport. [But] there’s still not a lot of clarity on whether this is a long term appointment or the changes we have seen are for this series, so there’s a bit of confusion around that,” Dravid said. “Sometimes from a players’ perspective that can be quite hard. I hope that’s something Ravi [Shastri] will handle quite well. All these players also build relationships with support staff and as players you do recognise that at some level you are actually responsible for your own success and failure.”Ravi Shastri was named team director on Tuesday, while Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar were named assistant coaches, sparking off a wave of speculation about Duncan Fletcher’s future as head coach. Dravid is of the view that “it will be up to him” to decide whether he is comfortable in continuing in the role in this “new kind of environment”, wherein he will have to report to someone at the ground.Having worked extensively with Fletcher as a player, as well as team mentor recently, Dravid said he got along well with the players. “If you ask me, I think he’s got a lot of knowledge and I know having been around the team that the team does respect him and a lot of them get along very well with him and do ask him for a lot of technical advice. There is a good rapport between him and Dhoni.”Dravid was also confident that Shastri and Fletcher would ensure they work together in the best interests of the team. “Knowing the kind of people that they are, they would want to ensure that the players see that there is no issue between them,” he said. “Like Ravi says, Duncan will still be the head coach, he will still be running the team meetings and be involved in the selection of the playing eleven. So I hope there is no issue.”Even as the new support staff prepares to take over, Dravid appreciated the work put in by bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding coach Trevor Penney who have been asked to go on leave for the one-day series. According to Dravid both did their jobs “very professionally and tried to do the best they can. Sometimes things don’t work out.”Elaborating his point further, Dravid explained that the role of the support staff is restricted to giving players’ the best environment to succeed in. “The support staff can’t bat, bowl or catch for you. That’s why sometimes being in the support staff or being a coach is a no-win situation because you might be giving the guys the best possible advise and the best possible training facilities but things don’t work in the field. You can still drop catches, you can still have technical issues with the bat. Coaches can’t solve everything and as good players, deep down, you know that. “With virtually an all-Indian support staff now in charge, there has been talk that the BCCI will consider only home-grown coaches going forward. Dravid believes that while Indian coaches are coming up and getting exposure in the IPL, nationality should never be a factor in deciding on the right personnel for the job. “What the team needs at the time they should get,” he said.As a player, Dravid has worked with Shastri before, and said his positive personality should benefit the team. Recalling the period after the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies when he was captain and Shastri came in as interim manager after India’s first-round exit, Dravid said: “I thought Ravi was very good in the time that he was there with the team. He’s obviously got a lot of experience that he has to offer as a player. By personality he’s a very positive, outgoing, upbeat kind of person, which can really help the team. His personality can help a lot of the younger players because they do respect him and what he’s done for the game.”
