Shitanshu Kotak, the veteran Saurashtra batsman, will end his two-decade long first-class career after his side’s Ranji Trophy opener against Rajasthan on his home ground in Rajkot later this month

Shitanshu Kotak, the veteran Saurashtra batsman, will end his two-decade long first-class career after his side’s Ranji Trophy opener against Rajasthan on his home ground in Rajkot later this month. Kotak, who turns 41 on Saturday, will call time on a career that began against Bombay in December 1992. He has played 129 matches so far and is four short of 8000 first-class runs with an average of 41.64 and 15 centuries.Kotak told ESPNcricinfo he had thought of retirement after Saurashtra’s run to the Ranji final last season but postponed it in the emotion of the moment. “I felt the team had done so well to reach the final,” he said. “It was a superb achievement and I did not want to take away from it with talk of my retirement.”But now I feel the time has come to make way for someone young. It is a good time to go. There are so many youngsters around to take the team ahead. I would like to thank the Saurashtra Cricket Association and Mr Niranjan Shah for all the support throughout my career. To have played for so long and not be dropped, I could not have asked for more. I would like to remain associated with the game in whatever manner possible after retirement. I will have a chat with Mr Shah and my association and plan the way forward. I would also like to thank my employers, Bharat Petroleum, for allowing me so much flexibility to play domestic cricket, even when it clashed with corporate matches.”Many veteran first-class cricketers move on from their home states to play for other sides as professionals, but Kotak said he could somehow never bring himself to take that path. “I would not say I didn’t think about it. In fact, there were some offers as well. I have nothing against those who play as professionals. It means a lot of money and respect. But I have played for Saurashtra for so long that I could not imagine myself playing for some other team. I have played for the same company and the same club as well for close to 20 years. “Saurashtra’s entry into the Ranji final last season is one of Kotak’s most cherished memories. “There are so many things to remember. Last year’s final is of course one of them. Also, Saurashtra winning the domestic one-day championship (in 2007-08) and qualifying for the Elite League from the Plate League.”When asked if there was any temptation to play one more season after seeing Saurashtra fall at the last hurdle previous season, Kotak said that would always be the case. “That feeling will be there,” he said. “But some day I had to take the call. Some day, it had to come to an end. I will still play for Bharat Petroleum in the Times Shield and league cricket in England. But this is it as far as first-class cricket goes.”Not being able to play for India wasn’t a regret, Kotak said, although he would have loved to have won the Ranji Trophy. “Every player wants to play for his country. That could not happen for me, but that is not a regret. Maybe I was not destined to. We played the Ranji final last year against a better team (Mumbai). Had we played in Rajkot, it could have been a different game. But even then, I would say the better team won on the day.”Known for his ability to bat for long periods and stonewall bowling attacks, Kotak was part of Saurashtra’s transformation from a weak side to a unit that is now a force in domestic cricket. He said he had seen the team change completely in the previous two decades. “To think that we now have as many as three people playing for India (Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja and Jaydev Unadkat). It is a tremendous achievement. We have come a long way.”Kotak said first-class cricket in India had changed for the better, chiefly in terms of money and exposure. “It is possible now for a domestic cricketer to settle himself somewhat financially over a career of say, ten years. More than money, I think there has been a drastic improvement in the exposure domestic cricketers get. Earlier, even if you did well, people would talk about it for two-three days, and then forget about you, especially if you played for a smaller team. Now, it is not possible for people to ignore you if you do well. Performances get noticed.”While Kotak will miss the Saurashtra dressing room, he will get more time to play with his son. Kotak giving throwdowns to the 12-year old was a common sight after the end of a day’s play in Rajkot. “That is definitely a positive outcome. Otherwise, he would have complained I was never able to give him enough time.”

Steve Massiah, the former USA captain, will not be traveling with the team to UAE for the ICC World T20 Qualifiers, as he was unable to get time off work. Massiah, 34, was officially announced as part of USA’s squad when the ICC unveiled the tournament rosters last week , but a USACA spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that he had been replaced by the uncapped 21-year-old batsman Fahad Babar.Babar was originally in USA’s 15-man squad to tour the UAE next month, but USACA had made a request to the ICC after the October 15 submission deadline to have both Babar and wicketkeeper Ritesh Kadu replaced by Imran Awan and Barrington Bartley. The squad shuffling has, in part, spurred Andy Pick to resign as USACA High Performance Manager.”It was hard. I was kind of disappointed,” Babar told ESPNcricinfo, describing his emotions after he was told last week that he would no longer be traveling to the UAE. “It was a little depressing but then I got a call yesterday saying I was going so now I’m really happy.”Babar scored an unbeaten 45-ball 58 in the first of three T20 trial matches against Bermuda on October 18, before getting out first ball in the third match two days later. He formerly represented the USA Under-19 team in 2011 at the ICC Americas U-19 Division One tournament in Florida.USA are scheduled to depart for the UAE on November 9. They have been placed in Group A, and their first match of the World T20 qualifiers is against Canada in Abu Dhabi on November 15.

Mitchell Johnson admitted he had doubts about his own consistency after blowing England away in their first innings in Adelaide
Daniel Brettig at Adelaide Oval07-Dec-20130:00
‘Emotional and special performance’ – Johnson
Mitchell Johnson doubted his ability to follow up on Brisbane as much as anyone.Having shattered any notions of his former inconsistency by delivering a spell for the ages at Adelaide Oval to push the Test and Ashes series firmly Australia’s way, Johnson admitted his rich relief at finally putting two such performances together.”For me to be able to back up a performance like Brisbane and do it here it is a really nice feeling for me,” Johnson said after scooping 7 for 40, twice reaching the verge of a hat-trick. “There’s been talk in the past, I can have those performances where I can blow a team away and then the next one not turn up. For me I think that was why it was a bit more emotional and special, because I was able to stick to my plans and go through.”The ball came out of my hand exactly how I wanted it to. There was a bit of talk about me not hitting the stumps much in Brisbane, but I was excited about the variable bounce and the reverse swing Adelaide provides, so it was really nice today, a really nice feeling, backed up by all the bowlers. There was a period there where the ball wasn’t really doing a lot, but we stuck to our plans and got a little reverse there.”England were put on notice that Johnsons had maintained his speed and rhythm when he bowled Alastair Cook with a fiendish delivery on the second evening, but his most memorable impact was to be had after lunch on day three. After defeating Ben Stokes and the completely out-of-sorts Matt Prior, a now trademark piece of gamesmanship by Stuart Broad allowed Johnson to regather himself and inflict further damage.”It was quite good that Broady stopped me and held up the game for a little bit, because you can get overexcited,” Johnson said. “It was actually a good time for me to relax and think about what I was doing, because you can get too involved in how the crowd is reacting and start thinking about going for the jugular when you should just keep bowling those good areas.Mitchell Johnson followed up nine wickets at the Gabba with another match-turning performance•AFP
“I think it’s something I’ve really improved on, I guess it’s just come with maturity and knowing my game a lot better. I definitely felt I was in one of those zones where nothing’s really going on in your mind.”Johnson’s appearances in this series were his first since a single Test on the abortive tour to India. He had earlier missed near enough to the whole of 2011-12 with a toe injury at a time when his desire to play the game had been sliding. He said the time away had been a great help in allowing him to focus on finding the consistency he had always lacked despite passing 200 Test wickets.”I didn’t doubt I could get back into the Australian team,” he said. “I knew if I worked hard, gave myself every chance, through my toe injury I made sure I did everything right whereas in the past when I first had my stress fractures I rushed back. I really worked on what I needed to work on, met some really positive people along the way, which have been a big help, but having that belief in myself has been the biggest thing.”I was definitely nervous at the start of the series, hadn’t played a Test in a long while, and what England have done to us in the past was on my mind, but I was able to push that aside and bowl the way I wanted to bowl.”As for the Mephistophelian moustache that has seemingly added to his menace this series, Johnson has committed to keeping it until the Ashes are won. But no further. “Some have called it a magical mo, and it’s going okay at the moment,” he said. “But once the series is over I’ll end it…”
