The appeals of Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir against the provisional suspensions imposed on them by the ICC for alleged involvement in the spot-fixing controversy were heard in Dubai on Saturday. The hearings, chaired by Michael Beloff, the chairman of the ICC’s code of conduct commission, will continue tomorrow when a verdict is expected. The proceedings were long and neither the players nor the ICC addressed the media. Fast bowler Mohammad Asif had also been provisionally suspended but he withdrew his appeal earlier this month.”The hearings went on all day,” Butt’s lawyer, Khalid Ranjha, told reporters after the eight-hour session. “It will continue tomorrow. I can’t say anything more about the discussions today.”The three players, prior to the suspensions, were charged with various offences under Article 2 of the ICC’s anti-corruption code. The suspensions came after the tabloid claimed to have exposed a scam in which deliberate, planned no-balls would be bowled by Amir and Asif during the Lord’s Test against England, with the involvement of Butt, who was then captain. The hearings will only concern themselves with the matter of the provisional suspensions and whether or not the ICC followed the correct procedures in taking that action. The matter of the players’ innocence or guilt and the actual charges against them will not be heard. Thus, even if the suspensions are lifted and the players allowed to return to cricket, a full hearing into the case will still take place later to determine their innocence or guilt in the matter.Butt is represented in Dubai by his lawyer Aftab Gul, a former Test cricketer, and Ranjha, a former law minister. Butt has spoken to the press, saying he is determined to prove his innocence and questioning the reliability of the sting conducted by . Amir, who has not made a statement throughout this time, said on departure that he hoped he could return to the side. He will be represented by Shahid Karim, the lawyer who defended Asif in a doping case in October 2006.

Man City eyeing Pau Torres transfer move

Manchester City have not been shy when it comes to buying players from Spanish clubs over recent years such as Ferran Torres, Rodri and Aymeric Laporte among others.

Looking ahead to the next summer transfer window, it seems as though the Manchester club have set their sights on securing another one of La Liga’s star figures.

What’s the news?

According to a recent Twitter post from journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, City are “interested” in signing Villarreal defender Pau Torres this summer.

As a product of Villarreal’s youth system, the centre-back has made a combined total of 194 appearances for their senior and youth teams, prior to their Champions League semi-final clash against Liverpool this evening.

In those appearances, the 25-year-old has chipped in with 12 goals and four assists along the way.

In terms of his defensive capabilities, the Spaniard has the second-highest number of interceptions (39) and clearances (103) out of anyone in Unai Emery’s squad for this La Liga campaign.

Also, with a combined number of 57 tackles and blocks, Torres is clearly a very capable defensive figure.

Supporters will be thrilled

Having been described as a player that “fits perfectly in teams which want to play out from the back, with coaches who think that way,” by Paco Lopez, this would make the Spain international a seemingly good fit for Pep Guardiola’s side.

To put that into perspective, only nine other players in La Liga have completed more passes than the Villarreal centre-back this season (1562).

Taking into account how three of the Premier League’s top five passers this season are City defenders, this shows just how suitable a player like Torres could be for the reigning league champions at the back.

With that in mind, it would surely be a massive positive for the City fans to hear that Guardiola has his eyes on bringing another defender that can play his type of football to the Etihad Stadium.

Moving forward, securing a deal for the Spaniard this summer could be a great bit of business from the Manchester club and further strengthen what is already a rather strong defence.

Dravid hails 'fantastic' innings

A violent last-hour surge from Harbhajan Singh gave India an 86-run advantage over New Zealand at stumps on the third day and Rahul Dravid said they would look to bat on for as long as possible on the fourth

A violent last-hour surge from Harbhajan Singh gave India an 86-run advantage over New Zealand at stumps on the third day and Rahul Dravid said they would look to bat on for as long as possible on the fourth because there was a “lot of time left in the game”.India lost wickets regularly as they approached New Zealand’s first-innings total of 350 but Harbhajan, who entered at 326 for 6, launched a jaw-dropping counterattack completely at odds with the nature of play in the previous five hours. He plundered 85 off the 110 runs scored while he was at the crease and is poised to reach his second century in successive Tests. At present, he has 269 runs from three innings, one short of the series’ top-scorer Virender Sehwag.”It was a fantastic innings. He has been batting brilliantly for us,” Dravid said of Harbhajan. “In the last game, he played superbly to save the Test match. Today was a really good attacking innings and a really good partnership with Sreesanth, which means we are slightly ahead in the game.”When asked if India were entertaining thoughts of an overnight declaration, so that their refreshed bowlers could get stuck into New Zealand’s batsmen early morning in a push for victory, Dravid said that was unlikely. He hoped that the last-wicket partnership between Harbhajan and Sreesanth could add a few more runs.”We would like to get as many runs as we can. Hopefully, Harbhajan can go on to get another hundred,” Dravid said. “Sreesanth has been batting really well and supporting him. The more runs we can put on the board, the more pressure will be on New Zealand.”The plan for India is to stretch their lead as much as possible and give New Zealand a sizeable deficit to erase. Dravid wasn’t worried out of running out of time to take 10 wickets and then pursue a target.”I think there is a lot of time left in the game,” he said. “Specially in India, we know that on the fourth and fifth days, the game starts moving very quickly. A lot starts happening on Indian wickets on the fourth and fifth day.”If we can get a few early wickets, then we can put them under pressure. Batting does get more difficult as the game goes on. We are hoping that there will be some bounce and turn tomorrow.”

Everton transfer news on Pickford

Frank Lampard is reportedly now contemplating selling Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the summer.

The Lowdown: Chelsea masterclass

Pickford is coming off the back of an absolute masterclass in their 1-0 win against Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon, as he was largely credited with keeping their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League very much alive.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This is not the first time that he has been hailed for his saves this season, as Lampard himself dubbed his saving ability as ‘world-class‘ after the Merseyside club narrowly lost 1-0 at home to reigning champions Manchester City back in March.

If they were to stay up, then Pickford’s form would be a key reason in doing that.

The Latest: To be sold?

Surprisingly after those heroics, talkSPORT journalist and transfer insider Alex Crook has revealed that Lampard is now ‘contemplating’ selling Pickford this summer, in order to help fund a rebuild on Merseyside.

The club are ‘ready to listen to offers’ for the England international, and he will ‘push’ for a move if they end up relegated.

Tottenham and Hotspur and Newcastle United are thought to be ‘monitoring’ his situation at the moment.

The Verdict: Keep!

Pickford has already shown how important he can be to the team with some of his outrageous saves this campaign, and so the Toffees should be looking to keep him at all costs.

Of course, this would be very difficult if they did go down, but should they stay up, then they should be trying to fend off interest for their number one.

Nonetheless, the 28-year-old would be very difficult to replace, as Trevor Sinclair believes that he is ‘one of the best’ goalkeepers in the world on his day, and so the Blues should be doing everything in their power to keep him at the club.

Eagles soar to trophy in thrilling one-run win

Mashonaland Eagles were crowned domestic Twenty20 champions after a thrilling one-run win over Mid West Rhinos in the tournament final at a packed Harare Sports Club

Mashonaland Eagles were crowned domestic Twenty20 champions after a thrilling one-run win over Mid West Rhinos in the tournament final at a packed Harare Sports Club. Eagles, who were thankful for Nick Compton’s well-paced half-century as they reached 167 for 7 after winning the toss, appeared to be out of the running in the midst of Vusi Sibanda and Lou Vincent’s 62-run stand. But they fought back valiantly, Ray Price bowling an unhittable spell at the death and Man of the Match Andrew Hall showing the immeasurable value of experience as he bowled a nerveless final over, with seven runs needed, to seal the title for the Eagles. The tournament final was watched by a boisterous crowd of several thousand in a noisy, carnival atmosphere. The wail of vuvuzelas was almost constant, and music, along with booming updates delivered over the PA – not to mention a riveting day’s cricket – held their interest throughout. This was a home final for Eagles, and after the win had been completed their captain, Grant Flower, led the team on a victory lap of the field, the crowd cheering their approval.Though he didn’t make a contribution with the bat, Flower marshalled his troops admirably in the field and was a particularly strong presence in the covers as the match headed towards its thrilling denouement. With Vincent and Rhinos captain Sibanda in cruise control, echoing their match-winning partnership against Southern Rocks on Saturday, and the result seemingly sealed, Flower turned to his spinners – Price and Greg Lamb – with almost immediate results.Sibanda, whose form has picked up as the tournament has progressed, couldn’t quite get to the pitch of a flighted offspinner from Lamb and chipped to deep square leg to be out for 46 in the 15th over and Eagles sensed their chance. Price, sporting a severe black eye and playing the part of the pugilist, proved almost impossible to get away and wasn’t afraid to let the batsmen know what he thought of their efforts. The pressure soon told on Solomon Mire, as he aimed a wild heave as Price came over the wicket and was bowled for 2. When Riki Wessels was run out looking for a non-existent single from the very next ball, Eagles were right back in the match. The decisive moment came in the 19th over, with Rhinos needing 10 runs, when Vincent – again opting to use a Mongoose bat – cracked a full ball from Ryan ten Doeschate towards long-off where Ryan Butterworth sprinted 10 metres in from the boundary and dived full length to cling on to the chance. Flower kept Hall for the final over, and in an electric atmosphere the former South Africa allrounder responded with a succession of pinpoint yorkers. With four runs needed from the final ball, Malcolm Waller slapped another full ball out to deep cover but just two runs resulted, and the Eagles were ecstatic.Their win owed a lot to Compton’s effort with the bat. He and Prince Masvaure weathered the early loss of Cephas Zhuwawo with a second-wicket stand of 85. Though a brief middle-order stutter followed, Compton had taken Eagles to the relative safety of 116 for 6 at the beginning of the 17th over when he departed for 74. He finished as the tournament’s leading runscorer with 233 runs, including three half-centuries, at a strike-rate of 128.02.Once he had departed, Hall showed his allround value as he muscled his way to a 17-ball 39 that included four fours and two sixes and boosted Eagles’ score beyond the reach of the Rhinos. After falling short in the tournament final last year, Eagles scrapped their way to the title this time round and celebrated their win in front of an enthusiastic home crowd in a fitting end to what has been, by all accounts, a successful and well-organised tournament.

PCB bars players from using Facebook and Twitter

The PCB has barred its contracted players from using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter during series in the aftermath of the Zulqarnain Haider controversy. The Pakistan wicketkeeper fled the UAE, where his team was involved in a series against South Africa, to seek asylum in the UK last month and, though largely untraceable, kept the public informed of his news through updates on his Facebook page.”The measure is for the players’ safety. They are prone to danger if the wrong person gets access to their information, whereabouts and so on,” team manager Intikhab Alam was quoted as saying by Pakistan’s . “Therefore, the PCB has finalised the policy and banned the use of all social networking websites during ongoing series, while also advising them to keep their activity minimum when they are not playing.”The PCB said the measure had been incorporated in its revised code of conduct for players. “There is a clause in their contracts which states clearly that they can’t use these social network sites or discuss cricket issues while under contract. It is for their own good, so that they don’t get entangled into controversies.”The board also threatened legal action against those putting up fake accounts of players on social networking websites. “There are many accounts that are not operated by the players,” the PCB’s legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi said. “Fake ones operated by other people are a hazard. These people are liable to face charges of cyber crime and fraud. So my advice to them is to be careful, otherwise they can be prosecuted.”Concern over the use of such websites by players has not been confined to the PCB. Kevin Pietersen’s outburst on Twitter over his exclusion from the limited-overs side in August resulted in the ECB introducing specific regulations for micro-blogging. And Allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas was banned by the ECB for two weeks following his foul-mouthed messages against national selector Geoff Miller.
