Newcastle hold Alex Lowry talks

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Rangers gem Alex Lowry…

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider sources, the Magpies have held talks with the midfielder’s agent ahead of a swoop for him in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Gers have offered him a £5k-per-week contract extension, but the Toon are now leading the race to land him later this year. Lowry is said to be weighing up his options with a decision to come on his future in the coming months.

He’d be a fabulous signing

Journalist Josh Bunting dubbed him as “fabulous” earlier this year and that is exactly what he would be for the Toon in the years to come.

At the age of 18, he would be a signing for the future and an exciting one at that. He has shown huge potential in the infancy of his career at Rangers as he has broken into the first-team set-up under Gio van Bronckhorst this season and impressed.

Lowry has appeared in four senior matches for the Gers this term and made an impact with one goal and one assist from midfield. This shows that he is catching the eye in Scotland as van Bronckhorst has deemed him worthy of involvement in the first-team at such a young age as his team fight with Celtic for multiple trophies.

Graeme Murty, his former coach at Ibrox, recently lavished the talent with praise, saying: “Alex is unlike anyone else at Rangers I would suggest in terms of his technical ability, the range of passing that he sees and executes, his individual ability to go past people and he has a remarkable degree of self-confidence.”These quotes illustrate how highly he is rated north of the border and that is why this can be a fantastic deal for the Magpies. Snapping up a promising young player at his age can be a snip by the club as it can save them millions in the future.

If Lowry is able to fulfil his evident potential and make himself a key first-team option for Newcastle in the coming years then that will mean that Howe will not need to spend big money on another midfield player.

Instead of splashing £50m on an international gem to come in, the Toon can develop the 18-year-old into a £50m player by working with him on the training pitch and offering him first-team opportunities.

New Zealand deprived by rain

Wet conditions meant New Zealand got no practice ahead of their five-match ODI series in Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Oct-2010Wet conditions meant New Zealand got no match practice ahead of their five-match ODI series in Bangladesh. Rain had washed out the first warm-up game on Friday and persistent showers prevented any possibility of the second practice match, scheduled for Sunday between a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI and the visitors. The five ODIs, the first of which is scheduled for October 5, will be held at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Liverpool hit the jackpot with Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez has been a key member of the Liverpool squad ever since signing for the Premier League club in the summer of 2015 from Charlton.

Following his arrival, the 24-year-old has gone on to represent England, as well as winning multiple titles for Liverpool, including a Champions League crown and Premier League title – and he still arguably hasn’t reached his peak years yet.

Gomez has made 139 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, and this is despite suffering major injuries which have ruled him out for significant periods of time – missing practically the whole of the 2015/16 season and undergoing ankle surgery twice.

In his 85 appearances in the Premier League, he has kept 32 clean sheets and has a 73% tackle success rate. Add to this the fact that he hasn’t made an error leading to a goal in these 85 matches and the stats show Liverpool have an extremely solid defender at their disposal.

This even led manager Jurgen Klopp to label him a “sensational footballer” during the side’s title-winning campaign in 2020.

His market value has soared in his seven years as a Liverpool player. The £3.5m signing now has a Transfermarkt value of a whopping £19.8m, showing just how impressive he has been for the team.

In March 2020, as Liverpool stood on the cusp of glory, his value sat at a staggering £37.8m while he was just 22. And, although it has slipped since then – largely due to injuries and Klopp rotating his squad – Gomez is still to enter his peak as a defender.

While Klopp is constantly trying to evolve his side, with his recent recruitment being excellent with attackers such as Luis Diaz and Diego Jota settling in extremely well, he won’t need to sign a centre-back for some time.

The £75k-per-week Gomez is at the perfect team in order to continue developing and you wouldn’t bet on him adding to his 11 England appearances in the near future too.

West Brom update on Matt Clarke move

There has been mounting speculation on the future of Brighton and Hove Albion loanee Matt Clarke at West Bromwich Albion, and there has now been an update on the situation.

What’s the latest?

According to West Brom reporter Steve Madeley (via The Athletic), the 25-year-old centre-back “would be keen” to stay at The Hawthorns this summer.

Madeley wrote:

“Clarke would be keen on a permanent move to The Hawthorns and there are reasons for which a deal would appeal to West Brom as it is likely that any deal would include a low up-front fee and would be weighted towards performance-related add-ons and sell-on clauses.”

Bruce will be buzzing

There is no doubt that Steve Bruce would be buzzing at the idea of the defender wanting to stay at the club after his comments about Clarke in an interview a few weeks ago.

Bruce told Express and Star:

“He has been, arguably, since I’ve walked through the door – he’s been our best player so I’m really, really, happy for him.

“All those conversations – it’s all about the future. What is going to happen in the future is the big thing and we’ll have those talks.”

The Baggies centre-back has featured 32 times in the Championship this season, with his effectiveness and influence in the backline a clear indicator as to why Bruce holds him in such high regard.

Clarke has made 1.9 interceptions, 3.2 clearances and 1.5 tackles on average per game, kept ten clean sheets, won the majority of his duels combined (63%) and has been successful in the majority of his dribbles (63%), proving to be a consistent force for West Brom throughout the season.

West Brom have now squandered their chances of picking up a playoff spot in the Championship this season, but will now need to focus on rebuilding and reflecting on the issues that have presented themselves this season to improve and hit the ground running to earn a place back in the Premier League next season.

Permanently signing Clarke could be a great step in their pursuit to return to top-flight football as he has proven he has what it takes to offer reliability and good fitness in the Championship for them, something many players in the team have struggled with throughout the current campaign.
