Hampshire have refused to include Kevin Pietersen for their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Kent on Sunday despite a request from Andy Flower, the England coach, to allow him some cricket before the Test series against Pakistan.Last month Pietersen announced he would be leaving the county to move closer to his home in London. Now Hampshire have responded by opting to stick with their young players rather than risk breaking up a team purely for the sake of Pietersen’s match practice. It also means should Hampshire make Twenty20 finals day, which is being held at the Rose Bowl, that Pietersen won’t play even if freed from national duty for the showpiece occasion.Although the club insist Flower is comfortable with the decision – and it is debatable how much value a one-off 40-over hit would have been for Pietersen – it is a rare example of a county going against the ECB’s wishes. It leaves Pietersen, who has been low on form this season, as the only England player not to have any cricket before the first Test against Pakistan, at Trent Bridge, on July 29.”I would like to express my thanks to Andy Flower for agreeing to this sensible decision and wish him, Kevin and the rest of the England team the very best for their forthcoming internationals,” said Rod Bransgrove, the Hampshire chairman.”We have some excellent England aspirants here at Hampshire, including batsmen Michael Carberry, Jimmy Adams, Michael Lumb, Liam Dawson and James Vince. However, it means he won’t have batted in the middle for nearly a month when he faces a strong Pakistan attack including Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer at Trent Bridge.His form this season, since returning from the World Twenty20 where was Man of the Tournament, has been disappointing with poor returns against Bangladesh and Australia. However, the England captain Andrew Strauss, speaking before the Hampshire decision was made, remained confident Pietersen would return to his best.”Kevin has just turned 30 but he has got a lot of cricket left in him,” he said. “He has had a tough time, there is no doubt about that. He has not scored as many runs as he has done in the past. But he is a high-quality cricketer and he will come back and play match-winning innings for us.”There was a precedence for Hampshire’s move after Ian Bell was left out of a Friends Provident Trophy semi-final in 2007, ironically against Hampshire in a match where Pietersen did appear.

Jaykishan Kolsawala made an unbeaten century in the second innings as the Baroda Cricket Association XI drew their opening tour game against Kenya. The visitors batted first and posted 308, set up by half-centuries from openers Anupam Gupta and Kedar Devdhar. Captain Pinal Shah then contributed 53 while Yusuf Pathan chipped in with a quickfire 35 off 26 deliveries. Quick bowler Nehemiah Odhiambo was the best Kenyan bowler on display, taking four wickets, although he was somewhat expensive, going at almost four an over.Kenya replied with 327, but were in trouble at 103 for 6 before Odoyo and Odhiambo stitched together a 148-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Odoyo eventually fell to Ajitesh Argal, who finished with 3 for 55, as Kenya took a 19-run lead.Baroda lost opener Devdhar before a run had been scored in their second innings but Kolsawala and Shah added 101 for the third wicket to make sure a draw was the only possible result.This was the first match of Baroda’s tour of Kenya. Next up is a one-dayer against the home side on July 27.

Celtic are set to be boosted by the return of full-back Josip Juranovic for Thursday’s European clash with FK Bodo/Glimt, according to Kieran Devlin of The Athletic.

The Hoops are due to welcome the team from Norway for the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off round tie. The winner will earn a place in the round of 16, while the loser will see their continental campaign come to an end.

The journalist replied that the Croatian was ruled out with an ‘illness’ but assured readers that the £16,000-per-week defender ‘will be available for Thursday’.

The verdict

Juranovic’s return is important news for Ange Postecoglou and Celtic.

The 56-year-old clearly views him as an important player, having selected him for three of the four Europa League group stage matches for which he was available, in addition to 17 league fixtures.

Furthermore, if you look at those who have played at least 10 top-flight matches for Celtic this season, he ranks as the fifth-best performer with an average SofaScore rating of 7.25/10. A return of four goals from his full-back position isn’t to be dismissed, either.

Indeed, Alan Hutton described him as the best full-back at the club following an ‘excellent’ Old Firm performance earlier this month, so it is reassuring to hear Devlin saying that Juranovic will be good to go for the visit of Bodo/Glimt.

– No primeiro tempo acho que a dificuldade não foi de um ou outro: foi de todo mundo. Primeiro tempo foi horrível. A realidade é essa. Foi muito ruim. The result was rarely in doubt after the Unicorns made just 166 for 9.Trescothick was bowled by an inswinger from Neil Saker for a duck, but the ex-Surrey seamer’s opening partner Jonathan Miles then received some punishment from Kieswetter and Compton as they took advantage of the powerplay.Kieswetter eventually pulled medium-pacer Glenn Querl to deep backward square-leg and Devon star Neil Hancock forced Zander de Bruyn to play on in the next over. Compton reached his 50 from 66 balls with four fours and one six, a lofted cover drive off Miles. Paul Robinson has been left lauding the news that Abdoulaye Doucoure could now be fit enough to play for Everton when they play Manchester City on Saturday evening.

The Lowdown: ‘Close’

As quoted by The Liverpool Echo, Frank Lampard revealed over the weekend that Doucoure could now be ‘close’ to being fit for the Premier League game over the weekend, after missing their last four matches in all competitions.

He struggled with injury earlier on this season, with a stress fracture leaving him out of four matches in the top flight between October and November, in which the Goodison Park faithful gained just one point and conceded 10 goals (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, it is good to hear that he seems to be nearing a full recovery.

The Latest: Robinson reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham Hotspur and England international goalkeeper Robinson, who regularly features on Sky Sports, has now claimed that it is a ‘huge boost’ to have Doucoure returning to fitness ahead of the match against the Sky Blues:

“Firstly, it’s a huge boost to have Doucoure back.

“He’s so important to how they play.

“I think Lampard changes the formation against Man City. I think he plays a three in midfield with Doucoure, Allan and Van de Beek in there. On paper, wow, that is a top, top midfield three.

“If you play the three of them in the middle you can bring Dele Alli into a role as well. He can potentially play in behind Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“Alli is in desperate need of game time and I think Doucoure’s involvement gives Lampard the option of playing a more narrow 4-3-1-2. Dele could go into that number 10 role that he is so effective in.”

The Verdict: Relief

After his previous injury, it will certainly come as a relief to both Lampard and the Merseyside club that Doucoure is nearing full fitness again, especially if he is able to play against Pep Guardiola’s men.

To have any chance against the reigning champions, Lampard will need all of his best players fit, and the Frenchman is certainly one of them.

Doucoure currently ranks as the Toffees’ third-best player so far this season, having made a team-high four assists in the Premier League, while he also ranks highly in terms of average tackles, shots, dribbles, passes and through balls per game (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, MCFC will look to dominate the midfield, and the 29-year-old will be key in making sure that that does not happen.
