Zé Roberto foi acompanhado por Mattos e pelo presidente Maurício Galiotte na entrevista desta terça, na Academia de Futebol. Depois do anúncio de sua nova função, o ex-camisa 11 fez agradecimentos a todos os clubes que jogou, à sua família e, em especial, ao Palmeiras.

– Essa manhã está sendo muito difícil. Ontem (segunda) chegou o momento que eu sempre procurei e tentei postergar, mas sabia que um dia iria chegar. Chegou ontem. Hoje estou aqui para agradecer aos clubes que defendi e ao Palmeiras, clube que escolhi para encerrar a carreira. Sem sombra de dúvidas, fiz a escolha certa. Conquistei meus objetivos, consegui os triunfos que almejei desde o meu primeiro momento aqui. Com certeza fiz minha melhor escolha – afirmou Zé.

Contratado pelo Verdão em 2015, já aos 40 anos, Zé Roberto fez 133 jogos pelo clube e conquistou dois títulos nacionais: a Copa do Brasil e o Brasileiro, taças que ainda faltavam em sua carreira. Segundo Mattos, o ex-lateral foi o “norte” para a reformulação que o clube viveu em 2014.

– Antes de assinar o contrato, eu liguei para o Alexandre: ‘estou assinando. Aquilo que você me passou é realmente verdade?’. Eu não o conhecia e acreditei no projeto. O momento do clube não condizia muito com a história da minha carreira. Sempre projetei jogar em clubes que iriam agregar à minha carreira. Quando o Alexandre e o Cícero me passaram que o Palmeiras estava reformulando e queria fazer um time competitivo, eu acreditei no projeto. Sem sombra de dúvida, tudo aquilo que o Alexandre me falou foi colocado em prática – citou Zé.

– Tudo aquilo que projetamos e sonhamos, hoje é realidade. Por isso aceitei o convite do presidente, do Alexandre, para dar continuidade a esse projeto vitorioso (agora na diretoria). Mesmo sem conversar com a minha família estou aceitando esse convite, por acreditar nesse projeto. Tenho certeza que vai dar muito certo – encerrou.

Hyderabad, home to the Deccan Chargers, will not host any IPL matches in the third season of the tournament following a decision of the league to shift all matches scheduled to be held in the state. However, the decision – a response to a separatist movement in Andhra Pradesh that has seen sporadic violence – has sparked outrage in the state and in Hyderabad, the capital, with the regional government demanding a rethink.Deccan’s first game, the tournament opener, had already been shifted to Mumbai on the grounds that it needed extra preparation. The six remaining games – four in Hyderabad and two in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam – have been distributed between Mumbai and Nagpur, Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, confirmed on his Twitter page.Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium will host Deccan’s tournament opener on March 12. The next three, in March 19, 21 and 28, will be played at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur and the last three back at the DY Patil Stadium on April 5, 10 and 12.Modi’s announcement was followed almost immediately by furious reactions in Hyderabad. The state sports minister, K Venkata Reddy, said the IPL had a 24-hour deadline to reverse its decision; he also repeated an earlier call to the Deccan Chargers to boycott the tournament if the decision stayed.G Vinod, president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association – a full member of the BCCI board – said it had not been consulted by either the IPL or the Indian board about the move. “We are yet to understand why Hyderabad is out of the IPL,” he told reporters. “I request Mr Modi to reconsider his decision.” He said he agreed with the minister that the decision was an “insult” to the people of the state.This past week had seen several reports of IPL matches being moved out of Hyderabad. Concerns over the political situation in Andhra Pradesh have already resulted in the shifting of an ODI between India and Sri Lanka from Visakhapatnam last December, and two ODIs scheduled for Hyderabad, during England women’s tour of India in February-March, have now been split between Bangalore and Mumbai. Also, spectators were barred from entering the stadium for the first two days of the Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone in Hyderabad because of a perceived security threat.Deccan are the defending champions, having beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final in South Africa last year. The result was a total turnaround from their last-placed finish in the inaugural edition in 2008.

Everton have already signed two players in the first week of the January transfer window, and could be set to make their third signing, but not on manager Rafa Benitez’s terms, if rumours are to believed.

What’s the story?

According to ESPN, Everton are in talks to sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona with Premier League clubs interested in the Brazilian attacking midfielder.

However, the report suggests that there is an internal debate at the club as whilst Farhad Moshiri is keen to do a deal for the player, Rafa Benitez is not on board with the signing.

Coutinho has failed to impress at Barcelona and has been heavily linked to many clubs across the Premier League and Europe, however according to Sky Sports, just two clubs remain in the race to secure the signature of the £380k-per-week player.

Disasterclass

If Moshiri wasn’t able to convince Benitez about a move for Coutinho but signed him anyway, the owner could fracture his relationship with the Spanish manager, and it never ends well when Rafa is involved.

Mike Ashley allegedly felt the wrath of the former Newcastle United head coach when the ex-Magpies owner refused to back him in the January transfer window of 2017, with The Express reporting that the Spaniard demanded answers from Ashley.

The relationship between the pair never repaired, and the problems only escalated behind the scenes until Benitez’s contract expired in 2019.

Sadly, Moshiri could be set for a similar situation if he was to blow the budget on the £16.2m-rated star hailed a “magician” by former Liverpool team mate and Aston Villa manager, Steven Gerrard.

There are many key areas of concern that Everton need to focus on, as well as finding a solution for the ongoing issues with Lucas Digne during the four-week window, and Benitez will want to avoid adding to the reckless spending habits of the past that the club has become famous for since Moshiri landed at Goodison Park.

The owner has signed 43 players and spent over £500 million over the last five years, not including the two additions this week, with little return of investment considering the club have not won a single trophy in that time and sit 15th in the Premier League currently.

Benitez has clearly attempted to adopt a different direction when it comes to signing transfer targets, just judging by his signings of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend in the summer, with Gray costing just £1.7m and Townsend joining on a free transfer.

It will be interesting to see if Everton continue their pursuit of Coutinho if the owner and manager cannot agree on the signing, and if he does go to Everton, it will only add to speculation that Benitez’s time at the club is slowly but surely coming to an end.

Aston Villa defender Kortney Hause is interested in returning to West Ham in the January transfer window, according to a transfer claim.

The Lowdown: Hause’s West Ham previous

The 26-year-old spent much of his youth career with the Hammers, with a spell in east London between 2003 and 2011, but he never made a first-team appearance for the Irons.

Hause ended up moving to Villa in 2019 after playing for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Wolves, with 54 appearances to date for the 1982 European Cup winners.

Minutes have been tough to come by this season, though, with just four Premier League starts coming his way, so a January exit could make sense.

The Latest: Hause wants West Ham return

According to Football Insider, a source close to Hause has informed them that the defender is ‘keen’ on going back to West Ham this month.

His current Villa deal expires at the end of this season, but the report stated that his club have the option of extending that by 12 months.

The Verdict: Good squad signing

Hause might not be the big-name addition that some West Ham fans might crave in January but he is someone who could add strong squad depth in the long-term injury absence of Angelo Ogbonna.

He won 10 caps for England’s under-21s in the past, highlighting his pedigree, and he has averaged 4.4 successful headers per game across all competitions so far this season. He also earned glowing praise from Aston Villa journalist Pat Rowe, who said last September: “He always looks so assured now this season, and physically, he just dominates players, he’s got the pace.”

At 26, Hause is at a point in his career where he has plenty of experience but should just be about to enter his peak footballing years, further showing why it could be an astute piece of business for West Ham to bring him back to east London.
