Scorecard
Left-arm fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar routed Sri Lanka, taking 5 for 26 to lead India to a thumping ten-wicket win in Johannesburg. India, who won their second consecutive game, justified their decision to field by picking up early wickets. The first four Sri Lankan wickets fell for just nine runs, with Netravalkar doing the bulk of the damage. He was supported by his new-ball partner Sandeep Sharma, who grabbed 3 for 26, as India allowed just two Sri Lankan batsmen to reach double-figures. Sri Lanka only managed 52, and the Indian openers, Lokesh Rahul and Mayank Agarwal, required just 9.1 overs to complete the victory.

Swann takes five on day of toil

Graeme Swann chiselled away with skill and diligence to claim a richly deserved five-wicket haul, but South Africa’s lower-order took the honours on an attritional second day at Centurion

Graeme Swann chiselled away with skill and diligence to claim a richly deserved five-wicket haul, but South Africa’s lower-order took the honours on an attritional second day at Centurion. They made light of the early loss of their overnight stalwarts, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy, to grind out a competitive first-innings 418 on a pitch that offered little of the spice it had promised in the build-up to this match. By the close, England had overcome a jittery new-ball spell to reach 88 for 1 in reply, with Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott unbeaten in an 63-run stand for the second wicket. It was a day of frustration for England, who once again felt that they had got the rough end of the referral system, and that was before South Africa’s last four wickets kept them baking in the outfield for 45 overs while adding 102 precious runs. But it was a day that culminated in emotion for the South Africans, most particularly when Makhaya Ntini – in his 100th Test – and Friedel de Wet – in his first – came together to share the new ball in a testing final session.Ntini might have struck in the very first over of England’s reply, when Alastair Cook poked at a sizzler outside off stump and sent a head-high chance bursting through AB de Villiers’ fingers at third slip, but instead it was de Wet who claimed the first breakthrough of the innings. Having launched his career with an ugly wide long-hop that passed harmlessly down the leg side, he settled quickly into a bustling wicket-to-wicket rhythm, and got his reward when Cook snicked a thin edge through to the keeper, Mark Boucher. With adrenalin pumping at both ends, England were ripe for a plucking at 25 for 1, but Strauss kept his cool outside off stump while cutting and pulling anything loose, while Trott – making his overseas debut at No. 3 in the country of his birth – survived a referred lbw decision from Paul Harris when he had made 12. Replays showed that while the ball might have clipped leg stump, umpire Davis’s original decision was to be upheld. Trott brushed off that near-miss, and reached the close well set on 18.Such an arduous day’s work did not appear to be on the cards for England after a successful first hour of play. England’s seamers were a chastised unit after their wayward fare on the first day, and James Anderson got his reward for a determined off-stump line when Kallis nicked a low edge to Paul Collingwood at second slip, having added just eight runs to his overnight 112. Swann then entered the attack to nail Duminy for 56 with his fifth delivery of the morning – a near-replica of the third-ball offbreak that did for his fellow left-hander, Ashwell Prince, in his opening spell of the match – and at 316 for 6, a swift denouement was not out of the question.Instead England were thwarted by that perpetual nuisance, Boucher, who fell one short of his half-century after a two-and-a-half-hour stay, and the unlikelier impediments of Paul Harris and the debutant Friedel de Wet, who bashed and blocked their way through 17 overs in a gritty ninth-wicket stand of 37. Morne Morkel also hung around for an hour in making 13, although England had been understandably aggrieved on the stroke of lunch when Swann believed he had extracted him lbw for 8, only for the decision to be overturned on review. It was the fifth intervention in a row that had gone against England – after Prince’s lbw reprieve on the first day had been followed by England’s two naive rolls of the dice – and though there was no quibbling with the verdicts that had been returned on each occasion, the clear sense of irritation was quickly exacerbated as Boucher got on with what he does best. His refusal to yield rubbed off on a succession of partners, starting with Morkel, whose hour-long stay only came to an end after Onions had roughed him up with a bouncer that crashed into his jaw, before another back-of-a-length delivery was flapped to the keeper.Harris was greeted by a barrage of short balls, particularly from England’s designated enforcer, Broad, but by hanging back in his crease he bought himself time to gauge the pace of the pitch, and by tea he was entrenched on 33 not out from 80 balls, with four fours to his name including a rare lofted drive to keep Swann on his toes. Neither patience nor aggression could make any impression on a pitch that was starting to look flatter than anyone could have predicted. As a consequence, Swann was once again England’s stand-out performer. He whirled away through a further 21.2 overs – in addition to his 24 from the first day – and it was his ability to make breakthroughs from standing starts that eventually did for Boucher, whose first ball after the afternoon drinks break tweaked off the inside-edge and into the grateful hands of Cook at short leg. But, before he could get too carried away with his celebrations, Swann was pummelled for a brace of fours in the same over by the debutant de Wet, whose calmly compiled 20 was an impressive introduction to the fray.Graham Onions denied Harris his maiden Test fifty by bowling him via an inside-edge following an untimely attack of cramp in his thumb, whereupon Swann extracted de Wet lbw to complete his third five-wicket haul. Appropriately, his celebrations had to be interrupted as the decision was sent to review, but this time there was no question about the validity of the call. That left England with 23 overs to negotiate before the close, but despite the early excitement, Strauss and Trott ensured that the long haul to parity was launched in a diligent fashion.

Tottenham gifted chance to sign Coutinho

According to reports by The Sunday Mirror (via HITC), Barcelona have offered Philippe Coutinho to both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – but the Brazilian is not interested in a move to St James’ Park.

The Lowdown: Barcelona trying to offload Coutinho

Since leaving Liverpool for the Spanish giants in 2018 in a deal worth a staggering £142m, the attacking midfielder has not hit the heights he reached whilst playing under Jürgen Klopp at Anfield.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 29-year-old has made 12 appearances this season in LaLiga, scoring twice and failing to supply an assist. However, each of those games has involved a substitution, as the Brazilian is yet to play a full 90-minute league match this season.

The Latest: Spurs gifted chance to sign Coutinho

According to reports by The Sunday Mirror (via HITC), Barcelona are keen to offload Coutinho on a permanent deal, and they have offered the player to both Newcastle and Tottenham in a bid to push him away from the club. However, it is believed that the midfielder is reluctant to make the move to Tyneside.

Barcelona are desperately trying to sell some players to fund a move for Manchester City attacker Ferran Torres. Coutinho’s massive wages are proving to be a barrier in this pursuit, though, as AS have reported that the Brazilian earns around €20m (£17.07m) per season, which equates to roughly £325,000 per week.

The Verdict: Wages likely too high

With Coutinho reluctant to join Newcastle, Barcelona will continue to push Spurs into a move for the player.

The 29-year-old could prove to be a fantastic addition to Antonio Conte’s side due to his vast experience in the Premier League, where he played 152 games for Liverpool and once made the PFA Team of the Season. Former Reds teammate and international colleague Roberto Firmino has previously described the Brazilian as ‘phenomenal’, claiming that he has ‘magical powers’.

Despite such praise, it seems unlikely that Spurs will pursue a move for the player, as his enormous wages could prove to be too much for the north London club, whose top earner is Harry Kane on £200,000 per week.

Mykolenko to earn dizzying sum at Everton

Everton will be expected to go into the transfer window with conviction over the next couple of weeks, as they have been, surprisingly, one of the most underperforming teams in the Premier League with only five wins and five draws from their last 17 fixtures this season so far.

The Toffees have been linked to a number of players over the last few months, but there was one signing in particular that was picked up by transfer insider, Fabrizio Romano, and the deal seems to be almost done.

What’s the word?

Ukrainian left back, Vitaliy Mykolenko is set to join Everton in January according to Fabrizio Romano, who tweeted out a transfer claim two weeks ago.

“EXCL: Ukraine left back Vitaliy Mykolenko is currently undergoing his medical as new Everton player, here we go! #EFC”

“He’s set to join Everton from Dynamo Kiev on a permanent move, final price around €21/23m. Personal terms agreed.”

Now Russian news outlet, YHAH, has claimed the full back is set to earn a ‘dizzying sum’ to join the Toffees on Merseyside in the New Year, with the report stating that the Dynamo Kyiv star will earn seven times his current salary at the Ukrainian club.

The report suggests that Mykolenko earns $50K a month currently, with a move to Everton improving his financial situation astronomically, as it is reported he will earn around £58K per week when and if he joins in the next few weeks.

Former Ukraine head coach Myron Markevych has heaped praised on the 22 year old speaking on the defender’s “desire to improve” in an interview quoted by the Liverpool Echo;

“By his dedication, his desire to improve, Vitaliy Mykolenko deserved such a challenge in his career. It’s really a real challenge for the 22-year-old, who has proven with his quality play recently at all levels that he is ready to test his capabilities in the world’s strongest soccer league.”

Bye Bye Digne

The signing of the Ukrainian international would only confirm further that Rafa Benitez has plans for current left back, Lucas Digne, to leave the club during the upcoming transfer window, with rumours already linking the Frenchman away from the club.

It would appear that making such a signing, with such a generous wage offering would only mean that the Spanish manager feel his differences with Digne as irreparable, which would surely leave fans gutted to see the Everton star leave after over three years and 127 appearances for the club.

It would clearly be an unpopular decision to let go of the full back, however, Benitez has come good with his signings so far for the Toffees, with both Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray joining the club during the manager’s reign, who also both happen to be the joint top goal scorers for the club right now.

Mahmudul targets last four finish at U-19 World Cup

Bangladesh Under-19 captain Mahmudul Hasan has set his sights on a last four finish at the World Cup, beginning in New Zealand from January 15. “You can’t go into a mission without setting a target,” he said. “Our target is to make it to the last four in the World Cup, which we are capable of.”Mahmudul said the main difference between the previous U-19 squad and the present one was that there wasn’t a visible age gap between players, with the current team comprising players all around the same age. “We have been given the opportunity to grow as a team and therefore the team spirit is excellent,” he said. “We know each other really well and there is great camaraderie.”We have a strong fielding side. The batting has come together nicely. If I have to comment on the weaknesses, I guess we have a lot of room for improvement in the pace bowling area.”The Bangladesh U-19 managed impressive performances in 2009, winning home series against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and England and clinching the ODI series against England in July. Coach Minhajul Abedin believed even though they were unfamiliar with conditions in New Zealand, the trip to England should hold them in good stead.”For the last one month or so the conditions at home have been similar,” Abedin said. “It has been chilly and the teams have struggled with dew in the ongoing tri-nation tournament. In the last tournament we played in Sri Lanka, the wickets had grass although the weather was really humid and sultry.”Our goal is to reach the last four. We have not managed to do that in past events and therefore it is not a bad target to set and something we can achieve. I say this because from what I have seen so far we are probably at the standard of the top four teams in terms of strength. There is not a big difference.”He picked out Mahmudul, opener Anamul Haque and legspinner Shabbir Rahman as the key performers, who could help them book a semi-final berth. “The three will do well at any level. I am also excited with the fact that we are taking two specialist legspinners to New Zealand (Shabbir and Nur Hossain). As a part of the strategy, we may even open the bowling in New Zealand a la Dipak Patel in 1992. I have a lot of faith in this team.”The core group has remained together and we have had some very impressive performances along the way. If I have to be critical then I would say that we are 90% there.”Bangladesh will look to improve on their U-19 World Cup record, having finished Plate winners in 1997-98 and 2003-04. They have been paired alongside Papua New Guinea (PNG), Pakistan and West indies in Group D, and begin their campaign against PNG on January 16 in Palmerston North.
