All-round Mota puts Tripura on top

A round-up of the first day’s play of the second-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Plate League 2009-10

Cricinfo staff10-Nov-2009The first day’s play of three games – between Goa and Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana, and Jharkhand and Vidarbha – was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Group A

Scorecard
A Wilkin Mota-inspired Tripura gained the upper hand against Rajasthan in Agartala. Mota grabbed a career-best 6 for 22 to help Tripura skittle out the opposition for 102; only three Rajasthan batsmen reached double-digits. Mota again stood out in the reply, making an unbeaten 38 to steer his team to 73 for 3 at stumps.

Group B

Scorecard
Only 30 overs were possible on the opening day of the fixture between Madhya Pradesh and Kerala in Indore. MP scored at a brisk pace, with Naman Ojha and Hrishikesh Kanitkar scoring half-centuries. Both were unbeaten after adding 120 for the second wicket, as MP finished the rain-affected day on 134 for 1.

Newcastle eyeing Lille’s Sven Botman

An exciting Newcastle United transfer update has emerged, regarding Lille centre-back Sven Botman…

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Magpies are ‘exploring’ the possibility of a deal and the Ligue 1 outfit could be tempted to cash in on him the January window.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle United exploring possibility of signing Sven Botman from Lille in Jan. #LOSC want to keep defender until summer but may consider sale if exceptional offer arrives. 21yo among leading #NUFC targets but would take big fee + salary.”

Excitement

Newcastle fans will surely be excited by this update as it shows the club are serious about going out and signing a top defender to bolster the squad.

Whether or not they will be able to get the deal done or not remains to be seen, but this update – at the very least – shows that PIF mean business and are prepared to pursue high-end players in January.

Botman falls under this category due to the nature of his performances for Lille in the last 18 months and the potential he still has. Last season, he averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.08 as they won the Ligue 1 title and he played in 37 of their 38 league matches.

This term, he has averaged a score of 6.93 in ten appearances while winning an impressive 68% of his duels and completing 86% of his passes. These statistics from the last two campaigns show that he has been a consistent performer at the back and been able to maintain a high level in the French top-flight, suggesting that he has the ability to come across to the Premier League and succeed if he can adjust to English football.

At the age of just 21, he also has plenty of room left for growth and development. He has time on his side to improve as a player and reach the very top of the game, having already achieved plenty before turning 22 – winning a league title and becoming a regular for Lille.

This is why Newcastle fans will be beaming with excitement that the club are targeting him. He could be a superb addition to Eddie Howe’s squad in the short-term, given his performances in France, and long-term, because of his potential. Thus, PIF must work hard to get a deal over the line in January.

Rangers could save millions with Simpson

Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst has enjoyed a sublime start to life in Glasgow with five wins and one draw in his first six games.

The Gers boss is picking up the results on the pitch but could now start to deal with off-field matters as the transfer window gets closer to reopening next month.

He could have a few decisions to make when it comes to the players who are out of contract at the end of the campaign, with centre-backs Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun both set to be free agents next summer as it stands.

Save millions

It remains to be seen whether or not either of them will be at Ibrox next season and there are questions marks over other players at the club, with Filip Helander currently injured and Nikola Katic out on loan.

This leaves Jack Simpson and Calvin Bassey (a left-back by trade) as the only fit centre-backs currently at the club who are contracted beyond the end of this term.

The issue for van Bronckhorst now is that the former is now attracting interest from south of the border. According to The Telegraph, QPR, Swansea and Middlesbrough are all interested in signing him in January to bolster their squads ahead of the second half of the Championship season in England.

However, with the issues Rangers have in terms of the make-up of their centre-back options heading into next season, they could need Ross Wilson to splash the cash to restock in that position. This means that allowing Simpson to leave whilst also losing Balogun and Goldson could cost the club millions.

The gem has won 83% of his aerial battles this season and averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.83 in three Premiership appearances this term and his ex-boss, Eddie Howe, described him both as a “lovely footballer” and a player who’s got “everything.”

This suggests that he has the potential to be a reliable option when called upon, which is why van Bronckhorst could save the club money by offering him more minutes in the first-team instead of allowing him to join Middlesbrough, Swansea or QPR.

The 6 foot 3 titan could prevent Wilson from needing to spend millions in the market on another centre-back to fill up a position in the squad, which is why this could be a key decision from the Dutch head coach heading into January.

At the age of 24, the £3.1k-per-week earner has the scope to develop further and it could be a worthwhile effort to offer him more game time to see if he is able to improve whilst playing in the team.

Central Districts knock aside Canterbury

A review of the fourth round of games in the 2009-10 Plunket Shield

Cricinfo staff06-Dec-2009Central Districts beat Canterbury with a day to spare to get their first success of the Plunket Shield in Rangiora. Having enforced the follow-on, CD bowled Canterbury out for 180, a lead of 26, and knocked off the runs without fuss. The openers Peter Ingram and Jamie How needed just 3.5 overs to chase down the required 27.The win was put in motion by a first-innings score of 325, aided by How’s 90 and 50 from Mathew Sinclair. Sinclair followed that fine innings by taking a career-best 3 for 29 in Canterbury’s first innings and added another on the final day of the match. Michael Mason wrecked Canterbury in their second innings, taking 5 for 42 to make it seven for the game. Ewen Thompson and Seth Rance took five and four wickets in the match respectively. Canterbury’s failure to notch up significant partnerships in either innings hurt them.Dermot Reeve, CD’s coach, was very pleased after the win. “We did well to get over 300 runs and we took all our catches. It was pleasing to see the fielders backing up the bowlers,” he told NZPA. “Mathew’s under-rated with the ball, he bowls a nagging line and length and hits the seam and on certain pitches he can do a good job with the ball.”Otago surged to their first win of the tournament with a nine-wicket win over Wellington in Queenstown. Wellington took early control of the match by declaring at 391 for 6, thanks largely to Stewart Rhodes’ unbeaten 142 on debut, but centuries from Neil Broom and Sam Wells carried the hosts to 471 for 9. After that dominant batting force, Otago’s bowlers bowled Wellington out for 203 in 62.2 overs. Only the opener Josh Brodie, who followed his first-innings 76 with 70, and Lance Woodcock (47) did much in the second innings. Set a target of 124, Otago eased home by nine wickets. The captain Craig Cumming hit an unbeaten 53 and was partnered to victory by Shaun Haig, who made 52 from 65 balls. With this win, Otago took maximum points and joined Central Districts on 10 points in fourth place.A rain-affected affair at Colin Maiden Park went Northern Districts’ way after they beat hosts Auckland by 55 runs. Two and a half days of play were lost to rain and the two captains, James Marshall and Gareth Hopkins, tried force a result. Resuming their first innings at 82 for 0 on the fourth morning, ND quickly posted 290 for 3 before declaring. Hopkins forfeited Auckland’s first innings and Marshall reciprocated by forfeiting his side’s second innings, leaving Auckland 291 to achieve their first win. It was not to be, with Graeme Aldridge (4 for 67) and Brent Arnel (3 for 52) running through the line-up. Hopkins’ 22nd first-class half-century was snapped when he went lbw to Arnel, and with that went Auckland’s chances at winning.ND’s attempt at racking up quick runs were aided by BJ Watling’s 136 off 169 balls. He and Brad Wilson (47) put on 101 runs for the first wicket, after which Marshall came to the middle and helped add 50 in 51 balls. This was ND’s third of the season and kept them on top of the standings with 26 points, 12 ahead of Wellington in second with six rounds to go.

Elano me deu a chance e eu estou muito feliz – disse.

GVB drops Helander injury latest

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that defender Filip Helander should be able to return to training after the winter break.

What’s the story?

Helander has been sidelined since early September after suffering a knee injury against St. Johnstone earlier in the season, but could return to training after the winter break, according to the Gers manager

On the 28-year-old’s status, van Bronckhorst said: “Filip has been out on the pitch for a couple of weeks individually so hopefully, he can join us after the break in training sessions.

“We have to build up his stamina and his training time with the team so hopefully, he will be able to join the team as normal, I don’t think straight after the winter break but hopefully soon.”

Rangers fans will be buzzing

The Sweden international was an important player last season as Rangers won their first league title in ten years, making 31 appearances in all competitions, as well as six this season before his injury, so to have him back will be an enormous boost.

With a second consecutive league title in sight, the Gers will require as many options as possible as van Bronckhorst’s side enter the second half of their Scottish Premiership campaign.

Rangers are currently six points clear of their fierce rivals Celtic at the summit of the table and will be looking to extend that advantage in the coming weeks.

The Gers faithful will be particularly fond of the Swede after he scored the winning goal against Celtic in August’s 1-0 Old Firm triumph. However, since then, he’s rarely been seen at Ibrox.

Having started 20 of the Glaswegian club’s 32 league games last year on route to the title, the return of Helander will certainly be welcome and will provide the Dutchman with another option as well as add quality to his squad as Rangers look to further boost their title credentials.

On that evidence, this news should leave supporters and everyone associated with Ibrox buzzing.
