In-form Durham aim to secure title at home

Durham will retain the County Championship title – and collect £500,000 – if they gain 11 points from their match against Nottinghamshire which starts at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday. Nottinghamshire, and mathematically Somerset, are the only sides with an outside chance of overhauling the reigning champions, but it would take a monumental turnaround to deny Durham even if they don’t secure the prize this week.A draw over the next four days at Chester-le-Street along with seven bonus points (which can be gathered by dismissing Nottinghamshire inside 120 overs then scoring 350) would be enough to put Durham out of reach with two rounds still remaining. And this time the financial rewards are five times greater than in 2008 after the ECB increased the prize money to ensure the Championship remained the No. 1 trophy ahead of Twenty20.Unlike last year, when the title race entered a gripping final week with Durham ultimately stealing the title as Nottinghamshire threw it away, this season has been a one-horse race since the start. However, Durham are not putting the champagne on ice yet and Geoff Cook, the coach, knows it’s important to treat this match like any other.”I think you’ve got to, you can’t be looking anywhere else other than the start of the game and the first session,” he told Cricinfo. “That’s been how we’ve done it throughout the season, you try to be as competitive as you can right from ball one and hopefully the team will be able to take that with them into this match.”Durham have managed seven Championship victories so far this season – no mean feat during a damp summer – four more than the next best, and there has often been daylight between the quality of cricket played. Their success is based around a potent pace attack which includes Steve Harmison, Graham Onions and Liam Plunkett alongside the more unheralded Mark Davies, Mitchell Claydon and Callum Thorp. It has allowed them to speed matches forward and take weather out of the equation. The depth in Durham’s ranks will be tested again, though, with Thorp ruled out after picking up a back injury against Somerset, while Onions will miss the title run-in after being called into England’s one-day squad. “It’s nice for him to get further international recognition, but it’s disappointing for us at this particular time when we are looking to be firing on all cylinders that we don’t have his services,” Cook saidOnions burst out of the blocks to give Durham a head start before his form earned him a Test place and he ends the season with 45 wickets at 15.28, while Harmison has 46 scalps at 19.19. The England pair are second and third in the Division One wicket-takers list, so Durham’s success is no surprise.”Our team has played some pretty strong cricket when it has mattered and the victories have been the result of some really top-class, competitive cricket,” Cook said. “Graham got a terrific start the season, getting to 40 wickets very quickly, then he was absent and Steve Harmison picked up the mantle and he has been well supported by the other group of bowlers and they’ve very well as a unit.”However, while pace has been central to Durham’s success their all-round strength has increased this season with the performances of Ian Blackwell, who moved north from Somerset in search of a new challenge, and responded with 707 runs at 41.58 and 31 wickets at 19.40, including an extraordinary 5 for 7 against his former club last week.Like Nottinghamshire’s Samit Patel, Blackwell doesn’t fit the England mould, but he has shown this season that he shouldn’t be forgotten. “He’s been vital, both in four-day and one-day cricket,” Cook said. “He’s enjoyed the fresh environment and I think his performances so far reflect that.”Last season Durham beat Kent on the final day of the season to secure their maiden title, but had to wait until Nottinghamshire’s demise against Hampshire for it to be officially confirmed, and celebrated on their long coach journey back from the South East. Their final two games this season are also away from home, so they have a chance to wrap up the title in front of home support this week, which would be fitting for the new power-house of Championship cricket.

Southampton handed Armstrong injury worry

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at the weekend in their latest Premier League outing after the latest international break, Southampton have been dealt a worrying injury issue that could impact their team for the next few weeks.

What’s the news?

Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong was not in the squad for the game at Carrow Road after picking up a calf injury before the game according to Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

This will surely be a big blow for the team and a big disappointment for the fans after the Scottish international had only recently recovered from a calf issue and managed to get some Premier League minutes under his belt before his first start of the season in their 1-0 win over Aston Villa earlier in the month.

Since joining the south coast club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Celtic in a deal worth a reported fee of £7m, the 29-year-old has made a total of 109 appearances for Southampton across all competitions in which he has managed to score 14 goals and provide 11 assists in the process.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

Given how Armstrong was just getting back into the swing of things for Southampton and played in both of Scotland’s recent World Cup qualifying matches against Moldova and Denmark, this latest calf issue will surely be a big setback for the player.

His latest appearance for his country against Denmark saw Armstrong come off the substitutes bench and provide an assist for his club teammate Che Adams in their 2-0 win.

Hasenhuttl and everyone else at Southampton will undoubtedly be hoping that the forward will be able to recover from this latest setback as soon as possible and not miss too many games for the Saints. As they approach their winter run of fixtures the manager will want as many options in the squad available to him to help keep his side away from the relegation zone.

If Armstrong does end up spending another significant period of time out injured, Hasenhuttl will have to rely on the likes of Theo Walcott, Moussa Djenepo and Nathan Tella to step up to the plate and provide a suitable attacking threat while Armstrong is out recovering. Given their inconsistent nature, this injury blow will certainly leave their Austrian head coach gutted.

Flower admits Pietersen concern

Andy Flower, the England coach, has admitted that Kevin Pietersen may not return from injury in time for the tour of South Africa

Andy Flower, the England coach, has admitted that Kevin Pietersen may not return from injury in time for the tour of South Africa. Pietersen is making slow progress following the Achilles surgery he had after the second Test against Australia and his recovery has been hampered by an infection.England name their squad for the South Africa trip after the Champions Trophy with the one-day series starting in November followed by the Tests either side of Christmas. There had already been concerns that Pietersen was struggling to make the one-day series and Flower isn’t sure of his participation.”We’re still taking that day by day. We’re still not sure whether he’s going to be fit or not,” Flower told reporters. “The infection that he got initially and the subsequent lack of healing that’s taken place since then [has set back his recovery]. He had quite a horrible wound after the infection took hold.”I’m not sure exactly of what he’s able to do at the moment, the medical people have been handling that. I would have wanted him back at the start of this one-day tournament.”Jonathan Trott’s debut century against Australia ensured Pietersen’s loss for the final three Ashes Tests wasn’t terminal, but the one-day side has struggled hugely in his absence. Without Pietersen, who has scored two of the three ODI hundreds England have managed since the start of 2008, the middle order lacked any presence against Australia. While Pietersen may yet recover in time for the tour of his homeland, one man who won’t be there in any capacity is Andrew Flintoff. He was already ruled out following his knee surgery and last week he turned down the offer of an incremental contract from the ECB, so he can take up a series of lucrative Twenty20 and TV opportunities, but Flower said he wasn’t too shocked at Flintoff’s decision.”I wasn’t overly surprised he turned down his incremental contract because it is not a lot of money,” he said. “I haven’t chatted to him just recently, but let’s wait and see how fit he gets and when he comes back first.”Fred [Flintoff] has made himself available for one-day international and Twenty20 cricket. So I’ll take him on his word that he’s going to be available. As far as I understand it he wants to play for England again in one-day internationals and Twenty20 cricket and I look forward to having him back and I’m sure he’ll be fully committed when he comes back.”

Time carioca perdeu a chance de entrar no G4 do Campeonato Brasileiro neste sábado.

A zaga do Flamengo estava perdida no primeiro tempo.

Berg and Junker back on Celtic’s radar

Celtic are once again looking at moves for Bodø/Glimt midfielder Patrick Berg and Urawa Red Diamonds forward Kasper Junker ahead of the January window, according to Celtic Underground.

The Lowdown: Summer links

As we know, the Hoops were extremely busy over the summer in terms of incomings and outgoings, with attackers Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota starring in Glasgow.

However, Celtic’s only senior midfield addition, James McCarthy, has struggled for game-time under Ange Postecoglou, whereas Giorgos Giakoumakis has had his fitness and injury issues.

Two men who were linked with a Parkhead switch over the last 12 months are Berg and Junker, and it seems as if they could be on the Hoops’ radar once again ahead of the winter window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-16/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: ‘Apparently’…

Celtic Underground took to Twitter late on Tuesday evening, claiming that Berg and Junker are two players being looked at once again. They tweeted: “Patrick Berg and Kasper Junker being looked at again apparently.”

Norway international Berg has played primarily as a defensive midfielder this season, whereas Junker has already scored 16 goals for his new club after only moving to Japan in April in a deal worth £1.89m, with both players out of contract in December 2022.

The Verdict: Interesting…

You’d expect that interim Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson will know all about the pair following their respective transfer links over the summer, so this latest update is certainly an interesting one.

Kieran Devlin claimed earlier this month that he believes the boat may have been missed in regards to a move for Berg following an impressive performance against AS Roma in the Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, Junker has only just changed clubs, so it may come as a real shock if the Hoops manage to sign the pair during January.

It appears as if transfer business will materialise at Parkhead during the winter window, but whether that will involve Berg or Junker remains to be seen. Still, Celtic could try their luck.

Leeds: Whites linked with Facundo Medina

Leeds United are looking into a deal for RC Lens defender Facundo Medina, according to Homme du Match.

The Lowdown: Medina profiled

Medina is a left-footed centre-back who can also play at left-back and has three caps to his name for Argentina.

He has only been with Lens for 18 months but has already been linked with a move to Manchester United following his impressive start to life in France.

The 22-year-old appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation of £9m, and it seems as if Medina is another player on Victor Orta’s radar at Elland Road.

The Latest: Leeds set their sights

Homme du Match shared a story on Wednesday and led with a title suggesting that the Whites have set their sights on a move for Medina.

He’s a player who is being closely followed by Leeds, with the report believing that he would fit perfectly into Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play.

The Verdict: Avoid for now?

Although Medina appears to be catching the eye over in France and can play in more than one position, perhaps Leeds need to look at alternative areas if they are to add to their squad in January.

Bielsa has just four senior midfield options at this moment in time, so there’s an argument that another would be needed before bringing in what would be a sixth centre-back.

It could be wise for Leeds to keep monitoring Medina’s progress, and who knows, a move may end up making sense further down the line.

Asif ruled out of New Zealand series

The PCB clarified that Mohammad Asif will not be travelling with the team to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for the series against New Zealand in November

Mohammad Asif is not allowed to go to the UAE•AFP

Mohammad Asif’s return to international cricket will be temporarily derailed as the Pakistan board clarified that he will not be travelling with the team to Abu Dhabi and Dubai for the ODI and Twenty20 series against New Zealand in November.Asif was deported from the UAE last year, having spent 19 days in detention at Dubai Airport, after he was found to be in possession of a small amount of opium. Though criminal charges were not pressed – reportedly after high-level contacts between the government of Pakistan and the UAE monarchy – the court order called for his immediate deportation and banned him from entering the UAE until further notice. The PCB had been trying to clarify what the situation was now that Asif is once again available for selection – following completion of a year-long ban for another doping offense last year – but has been told by authorities that he is not allowed back in. “Asif cannot play in the UAE,” Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said. “We checked with authorities in UAE what his position was and we can confirm that he cannot play there. If he goes there he will be arrested.”The situation leaves Pakistan in a quandary: following terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team in March this year, international cricket is unlikely to return to Pakistan till 2011. Till that time, it is likely Pakistan will play a number of ‘home’ series at neutral venues in the UAE. For the time being, however, they will have to make do without the services of one of their leading fast bowlers.
