Basnahira North looked to be in trouble at 87 for 4 in their second innings – with an overall lead of only 169. But they were rescued by an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 205 between wicketkeeper Kaushal Silva and allrounder Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, both of whom hit centuries. Pushpakumara went on to grab four wickets with his offbreaks in the Ruhuna second innings, three of the victims being top-order batsmen. The blows took the wind out of Ruhuna’s sails as they folded for 179 after being set a target of 431. Sri Lanka’s former Under-19 World Cup captain Ashan Priyanjan narrowly missed out on a maiden first-class hundred, getting out on 99 in Ruhuna’s first innings.Kandurata bounced back from the defeat against Basnahira North in the opening weekend, by recording a ten-wicket win inside three days against Basnahira South in Dambulla. A well-paced century from Nadeera Nawala, supported by half-centuries from Sajith Fernando and captain Kaushal Weeraratne, helped Kandurata reach 370 after choosing to bat first. Fernando, a prolific run-getter in domestic competitions passed 10,000 runs in first-class cricket during his 72. With Dilruwan Perera unable to bat in both innings after breaking a finger while fielding, Basnahira South collapsed dramatically for 123 in their first-innings. Asked to follow on they showed more fight, reaching 226 for 4 before losing their last five wickets for 41 to a fine combined bowling effort by Kandurata. The up-and-coming Gihan Rupasinghe, with fifties in each innings, provided the only joy for Basnahira South, helping them avert an innings defeat. Kandurata polished off the 21 runs needed for victory inside four overs.

Everton are ‘prepared to make a winter swoop’ for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles, as per TRANSFERmarketWEB. 

The lowdown

Everton tried to arrange a loan with an option to buy in the final stages of the summer transfer window, but Arsenal blocked the move.

Maitland-Niles was keen on joining the Blues and took to Instagram to publicly express his frustration (via The Athletic).

Having been told he was part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for the season ahead, he’s featured in four of the Gunners’ six Premier League matches, starting once.

The 24-year-old has two years left on his Arsenal contract and is valued at £14.4million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The report says that Maitland-Niles very much remains on Everton’s radar.

Intriguingly, the report says Rafael Benitez likely views him not as a midfielder but as ‘a possible successor for Seamus Coleman’ at right-back.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Arsenal will be willing to sanction his departure this time around. They’ve already let Hector Bellerin join Real Betis on a season-long loan.

The verdict

Everton’s failure to sign a right-back in the summer has already hurt them in the early weeks of the season. With Coleman sustaining an injury, Ben Godfrey has had to fill in, and he doesn’t look entirely comfortable in the role.

It’s important that they do get a deal done in January, but it’s hard to see Arsenal agreeing to part with a valuable squad option midway through the campaign.

The IPL drug tribunal has rejected the PCB’s request to revise the ban imposed on Mohammad Asif. Last week, the Pakistan board had asked the IPL to move the start of the ban from September 2008 to last July. Asif was banned for one year recently by the IPL’s drug tribunal for testing positive for nandrolone, a banned anabolic steroid, during the tournament last year.The Pakistan board had wanted the ban to be in effect from July 15 2008, the date the PCB had banned Asif, and not September 23 as decided by the IPL’s drug tribunal. But Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, insisted the September date was taken into account because that was date the IPL passed the suspension order after Asif’s second sample had tested positive.”We cannot accept the PCB letter to reduce the ban. As far as we are concerned Asif asked for the B sample to be tested and from that date the ban was imposed,” Modi said.Asked if the IPL had the powers to tell the tribunal to reconsider the decision, Modi responded in the negative. “We as IPL do not have the discretion to change the decision of the tribunal.” This means Asif has no chance of being part of Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka, which begins in July.Asif’s doctor Michael Graham said the fast bowler should now wait for his ban to end so that he could resume his international career. “The timing of the appeal against the ban has lapsed and the chapter is now closed,” Graham said. “It was an unintentional mistake and the tribunal should have given him the benefit of doubt. Now he must wait for the ban to end on September 23 so that he can resume his international career.”

Everton have been the epitome of frustration as far as a football club is concerned for a number of years now.

While many supporters would love to have the financial backing that the Goodison Park side have received in recent years, none would wish for their hierarchy to flutter away such vast sums so frivolously.

The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Davy Klaassen and Alex Iwobi have all arrived on Merseyside in big-money deals but ultimately failed to live up to expectations.

However, arguably none of the Toffees recent flops have left a bigger sense of frustration and disappointment lingering around Merseyside as Yannick Bolasie.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international joined Everton from fellow Premier League rivals Crystal Palace for a whopping £26m during the summer of 2016 after showing flashes of brilliance for the capital club.

During 2014/15, the tricky winger scored four goals and provided a hugely impressive 11 top-flight assists for a mediocre Palace side, highlighting his top-class potential.

Nevertheless, his purchase still represented a substantial risk for the Everton chiefs. While Bolasie clearly had the talent to become a more efficient forward, he had only scored 13 goals in 144 appearances for Palace prior to his sale.

The now 32-year-old made a fast start to life in his new surroundings, though, scoring one goal and laying on four assists for his teammates in his first 15 outings for the Blues in all competitions.

But then he suffered a devastating cruciate ligament injury which heavily impacted the future fortunes of his career. Bolasie only scored once more for Everton before embarking on a series of loan spells with varying degrees of success.

Short-term stints at the likes of Sporting Lisbon, Middlesbrough and Anderlecht failed to reignite his career, and he’s now plying his trade with Turkish outfit Caykur Rizespor.

Bolasie’s dramatic drop-off in form and fitness struggles saw him finally released on a free transfer this summer after a nightmarish five-year spell at the club. Sadly, both Everton and the player will be left wondering ‘what if’ for many years to come.
