Pundit confident Tottenham will sign Cristian Romero - Exclusive

Graham Roberts is confident that Tottenham will complete a deal to sign Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, after it was reported on Wednesday that they’ve agreed a fee for the Argentine.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been desperately trying to add defenders to his squad this summer following Spurs’ difficulties under Jose Mourinho last term.

Tottenham have already moved on both Juan Foyth and Toby Alderweireld, meaning a centre-back is the priority for the Spurs boss, with one of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez also expected to be sold before the window shuts.

With that in mind, Romero has been identified as the club’s number one target, although the deal has ebbed and flowed, with Daniel Levy persistent on getting the right price.

The 23-year-old returned to pre-season training with the Italian outfit on Monday, but there was a growing increase that Romero would become a Tottenham player, according to Alasdair Gold.

And Roberts himself is optimistic that Romero, who was named  Serie A Defender of the Year last season, will become Santo’s third summer addition.

He told The Transfer Tavern:

“I think what they’re looking at the moment is how much they give up front, it’s the minor details. I am quietly confident that will happen, the vibes I am getting are it’s going to happen.”

Disappointed Dyson stands up for his batsmen

The coach John Dyson has rejected suggestions the West Indies batsmen threw their wickets away as they were dismissed for an unsatisfying 216 at Kensington Oval. The hosts were chasing a big first innings after knocking the tourists over for 251 early on the second day, but they could not capitalise and at stumps were 70 runs behind.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was again indestructible, reaching 79 not out, but he was left without major support. “I don’t think the batsmen throw it all away just like that,” Dyson said. “We’re disappointed with the batting effort today and the batsmen would be first to admit that.”I don’t know about there being soft dismissals, it’s a very, very fine line. You want players to be aggressive, particularly on wickets that offer a bit of pace and bounce.”Australia have not been able to remove Chanderpaul since the first Test in Jamaica and he struck 12 fours and a six in his 142-ball stay. “Chanderpaul always does make major contributions, unfortunately so far in this series some of the lesser profile players haven’t made a major contribution to support that,” Dyson said. “We’re not converting our 20s and 30s often enough. Occasionally the execution isn’t spot on and occasionally you get out to a superb catch or superb piece of fielding.”Dyson was pleased with the overall performance of the team in competing throughout the series, and said the match situation was “even”. “We’re going to have to bowl exceptionally well and bat exceptionally well in the final innings,” Dyson said. “I don’t see the wicket breaking up so it will be an interesting game from here on in.”

Law and Di Venuto through to quarters

A round-up of the latest contributions from Australian players in the counties

There were broad smiles back in January when Victoria and Western Australia qualified for the Twenty20 Champions’ League as the thoughts of the $5million-cashpot beckoned. Now, although a pair of Australian players, Stuart Law and Michael Di Venuto, are theoretically one step closer to shooting for the target after reaching the English quarter-finals following this week – they still have no idea whether the counties will be allowed in.Theirs is not to question, however, theirs is just to do. They did – and Di Venuto will now fly the flag with Durham who have a home tie against Yorkshire after topping the North group. Law’s Lancashire will take on Middlesex meaning at least one Australian will feature on finals day. Dirk Nannes, who is in the Middlesex squad, is already through to the Champions’ League with Victoria.Law led well, while his batting contributions were mixed. Against Nottinghamshire, he made 6, one of Darren Pattinson’s two wickets when Lancashire came out the better at Old Trafford. He then needed only to support Lou Vincent’s magnificent hundred, with 19 not out in a nine-wicket stroll against Derbyshire also at Old Trafford.Di Venuto made 17 against Yorkshire in Durham’s eventual D-L win at Chester-le-Street. His duck, and that of his opening partner Phil Mustard didn’t end up costing Durham who snuck a 16-run win D-L win against Derbyshire at Derby.Nannes didn’t play in Middlesex’s past few games, including their final match against Surrey at The Oval, while Matthew Nicholson bowed out after taking part in only one match of his side’s gutless campaign.Ian Harvey and Sean Ervine missed out as Hampshire were pipped at the post. In their final game, Harvey made 17 and Ervine 15 as they slumped to 105 all out in reply to Essex’s 159 in Chelmsford. Ervine’s 28 was part of a tie with Essex at the Rose Bowl. Earlier, Harvey took a wicket and made 34 to beat a sorry Surrey at the Rose Bowl while Ervine managed 4.Justin Langer’s Somerset bowed out after a washout at Northampton ruined their last remaining hopes of qualification. They had to beat Northamptonshire to stand any chance, but when Langer fell to the first ball of the match, their hopes took an early setback. Neither was his 22-ball 44 enough for Somerset when they earlier lost to Warwickshire with two balls remaining at Edgbaston.Of the other state-qualified players, Adam Voges made 10 in the Lancashire match but struck an impressive 59 against Leicestershire, keeping his wicket as all round him were losing theirs, until falling with his side agonisingly close at Grace Road. In his last game, which could be his last until the Champions’ League, he top scored with 39 in a nine-wicket loss against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.Marcus North timed an unbeaten 25 to hunt down the target of 131 against Glamorgan at Bristol, but his Western Australia team-mate Steve Magoffin captured him for 1 as Gloucestershire sank to 93 at Bristol.

Everton target Andre-Frank Zambo-Anguissa

Everton head into their opening Premier League clash of the season next week with a lot of preparation still to undertake.

At the moment, the Toffees don’t look ready for an assault on the top six in the top-flight and could be left behind very quickly by their nearest rivals.

On the chalkboard

Rafa Benitez has had a rather quiet transfer window with just three signings being made in the shape of Asmir Begovic, Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend.

However, there are still plenty of areas in the squad that need to be addressed before the window closes.

Whether James Rodriguez departs is a contentious point of debate but he’s not the only one linked with the exit door.

Andre Gomes could face a departure while Tom Davies has been touted with a move away as well.

Davies has come through the club’s academy and for that, he deserves very special praise. However, if he does go he should be fairly easy to replace.

The solution

If Davies or anyone in the Everton midfield heads for the departure lounge in the remaining weeks of the window, Benitez should move for Andre-Frank Zambo-Anguissa.

The Fulham midfielder could be on the move after the Cottagers were relegated back in May and the Toffees are one of the interested parties.

He’s previously been quoted at £25m which would be a mere snip for such a well-rounded footballer.

Instantly, Benitez would secure an upgrade on Davies who has failed to really take his game to the next level over the last year.

The 23-year-old failed to score all season and put in some rather lightweight performances in the middle of the park. He made just 1.2 tackles per game from a defensive point of view but his offensive play was also lacking.

Davies only registered 0.2 key passes per game and recorded 0.7 dribbles a match.

Zambo-Anguissa, on the other hand, is a monster in several phases. Described as a “machine” by Joachim Andersen, the Cameroon international made a whopping 2.2 successful tackles last season.

What sets him apart from others in his position is mesmeric dribbling. Zambo-Anguissa’s ball carrying is elite, making 2.7 dribbles per outing.

That means that the Fulham star completed 95 dribbles in the Premier League during the 2020/21 campaign, the third-best tally in the entire division behind Allan Saint-Maximin and Adama Traore.

On that evidence, he’d be a fantastic signing from Marcel Brands and co. He is a certified upgrade on others in the Everton squad.

Celtic: Thomas Henry on verge of Gent move

Celtic target Thomas Henry is on the verge of swapping OH Leuven for Gent, according to The Daily Record’s Keith Jackson.

The Lowdown: Henry links

The Hoops were first linked with the 26-year-old last week, with The Scottish Sun suggesting Celtic were on the brink of securing a big-money deal.

Henry was seen as the ideal replacement for Odsonne Edouard, who is still working on a Parkhead exit.

The forward’s agent even revealed on Saturday that Henry wants to join Celtic over Rangers or Gent, but it now seems as if a move to Parkhead will not materialise after all.

The Latest: Gent move

According to Jackson, Henry is on the verge of penning a long-term deal with Gent.

A move is thought to be 95% complete after the two clubs shook hands on a £4.5m agreement last week.

Sources in Belgium expect a deal to go through before the weekend, unless Celtic launch a late counter offer.

The Verdict: Time is running out

Celtic have had all summer to sort out Edouard’s future and replacement, with the Frenchman making it clear he wanted out regardless of who came in as manager back in April.

There are now just weeks remaining in the window, so time is running out.

Henry could well have been a shrewd replacement for Edouard, especially after just coming off the back of his best season in front of goal.

It appears as if he will now move on for under £5m, so Celtic may well look back on this as a missed opportunity to possibly replace Edouard, should he seal a Glasgow exit.

In other news: Leeds keen on another Celtic ace alongside Leo Hjelde.
