Zimbabwe cruise to six-wicket win in third one-dayer at Kochi

After a commanding performance at Mohali that saw India’s batsmen notch up 320 in 50 overs, the same line-up of batsmen slumped to 191 all out at Kochi

Anand Vasu13-Mar-2002After a commanding performance at Mohali that saw India’s batsmen notch up 319 in 50 overs, the same line-up of batsmen slumped to 191 all out at Kochi. If the last game was a demonstration of how to bat the opposition out of a game, the third one-dayer was an example of how to shoot oneself in the foot.Electing to bat first, a series of loose strokes at the top of the order saw India relinquish the advantage to a disciplined, determined Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe applied themselves during their batting display as well, winning the encounter by six wickets and taking a valuable 2-1 lead in this five-match series.Things began to go wrong for India when Dinesh Mongia was dismissed in just the fourth over of the day. It would be fair, however, to say that Mongia was unlucky to be adjudged lbw to medium-pacer Douglas Hondo. Mongia (4) looked disappointed, and replays suggested that the ball may have pitched outside the leg-stump.VVS Laxman breezed in and out of the middle. Cover-driving as though it were the easiest task in the world, Laxman got the Kochi crowd on their feet and cheering. But, as it often is with things of exceptional beauty or grace, the joy was only fleeting. After making 20 in 24 balls with three fours, Laxman slashed a wide one from Hondo through to keeper Tatenda Taibu.Just when consolidation was the order of the day, with India struggling on 38/2, Sourav Ganguly came down the wicket and attempted to deposit a Hondo delivery into the nearby Arabian sea. Ganguly missed, Hondo hit, and India were in strife at 49/3 in the 12th over.Rahul Dravid, often the man to take India out of the woods, was tempted into playing a late cut off Mpumelelo Mbangwa. The ball slid off the face of the bat and appeared to be beating Craig Wishart at a deep slip position. Out flashed the hands, late, quick and in perfect place to snap up a brilliant catch. Dravid (6) had to shake his head in amazement as he walked back to the pavilion.Mohammad Kaif has waited a long while to get an extended run in the Indian team, all the while working hard on his fitness and battling on the domestic circuit. He showed at Kochi that he is a valuable component of this Indian team. Batting with great application and determination, Kaif compiled 56 (78 balls, 2 fours, 1 six), leading India to a score of 191 – something that looked extremely unlikely earlier in the day. After failing with the bat in the first two games of this series and scoring a total of zero runs from three balls in two innings, Sanjay Bangar (36 runs, 67 balls 3 fours) was under some pressure to come good. The all-rounder was shaping to make a serious contribution when he came down the track and hit a Douglas Marillier full-toss straight down the throat of Hondo on the mid-wicket fence. When Bangar was dismissed, with 137 on the board, wickets began to fall with alarming regularity. After the fall of Kaif, just 34 runs were added as India set Zimbabwe a target of 192 for victory. Hondo (4/32) will remember this day for many years to come, and rightly so. The medium-pacer, playing his first game of this series, bowled with good control and troubled batsmen consistently, earning his Man of the Match award.India began well enough in defence of a virtually indefensible score. Ajit Agarkar and Zaheer Khan bowled with pace, zip and accuracy to remove the first two wickets with just 39 runs on the board. But those were really the last moments of cheer for the home side.Alistair Campbell, content to seal up one end, batted with common sense, while Grant Flower was the ideal foil in the middle overs. Even the introduction of Harbhajan Singh did not faze the pair. Campbell, setting his stalls out for a long knock, did not mind biding his time.Grant Flower, almost permanently in the shadow of his brother, is really an underrated cricketer. With Andy Flower absent, brother Grant was promoted up the order, and he shouldered the responsibility admirably. Using his feet well, Grant Flower worked the ball away into the gaps on the leg-side with ease, going for the big hit every now and then. After reaching his half-century, Campbell seemed to open up a bit more, playing some exquisite strokes through the on-side. A cover drive off Sarandeep Singh stood out, with Campbell leaning well into the off-side to execute the stroke perfectly. It was, however, the same man who brought about Campbell’s dismissal. How many times do we see a batsman do all the hard work in setting up a team victory before throwing it away just when the job was near completion? Campbell deserved a century, if not at least a big unbeaten fifty, but he fell on 71 (119 balls, 7 fours) as he paved the way for a six-wicket Zimbabwe win at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. In the 34th over of the innings, Campbell jumped down the track to Sarandeep and was beaten both in the flight and off the wicket. He could only look back in dismay as Ajay Ratra whipped off the bails.By the time Campbell was dismissed, Zimbabwe had reached 144/3 and needed only a further 48 runs for victory. But Campbell did enter an exclusive club during his innings – he became just the third Zimbabwean to score 5000 one-day runs when he heaved Dinesh Mongia into the mid-wicket stands.Grant Flower, not looking for anything beyond a safe ride home for Zimbabwe, motored along to 49 (88 balls, 7 fours) before nicking one from Agarkar through to keeper Ajay Ratra. He was unlucky to miss a half-century, but that will not fuss Grant Flower too much.Eventually, Craig Wishart (17) clattered two sixes, and Zimbabwe clinched victory by six wickets in 44.2 overs, taking a vital 2-1 lead and ensuring that the next one-dayer – at Hyderabad – will see India under immense pressure to win and stay alive in the series.

West Ham enquiry made for Dragowski

According to a report by Viola News, West Ham United have ‘asked for information’ over recent weeks in an enquiry to sign colossal Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski.

The Lowdown: Hammers searching for a shot stopper?

Despite reports indicating that manager David Moyes’ summer priorities are a new striker, new centre-half and permanent deal for Lingard (Claret & Hugh), West Ham have also been touted to bolster other positions.

One of those is in between the sticks, with current number one Lukasz Fabianski arguably approaching the end of his West Ham career despite recently signing a one-year extension in east London.

The Hammers could be on the lookout for a new shot stopper as his possible heir this summer and the club have already been linked to the likes of Sam Johnstone.

The Latest: West Ham enquiry now made for Dragowski

As per local Florence outlet Viola News, the Irons have now made an enquiry to sign Dragowski amid the search for a possible new keeper.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, West Ham have apparently asked for information in recent weeks but are not the only club looking into a possible deal for the 23-year-old.

They face stiff competition from the Premier League with Tottenham, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers all placing Dragowski on their radar.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse started 36 matches for Fiorentina over the 2020/2021 Serie A campaign, keeping eight clean sheets in that time (Transfermarkt).

The Verdict: Promising but not a priority…

Drawgowski comes as a decent prospect in the goalkeeping department, having made his international debut already at just 23 and playing at a consistently in a top league throughout 20/21.

However, given West Ham’s considerable lack of depth going forward, with star striker Michail Antonio in and out of the side due to reoccurring fitness issues, the Irons have bigger priorities.

A permanent deal for Lingard and new centre-forward should sit top of the pile when it comes to West Ham’s transfer agenda.

The east Londoners should also be monitoring new centre-backs ahead of new keepers, especially given the club’s decision not to renew Fabian Balbuena’s current deal.

Fabianski’s extended stay means West Ham can bide their time in search of a new keeper, but the same cannot be said for other positions in Moyes’ squad.

Warwickshire give Pollock Sundays off; Razzaq misses Australia to stay with Middlesex

As an indication of the problem facing English county clubs with the hiring of overseas players, Warwickshire have come to an agreement with the United Cricket Board of South Africa that Shaun Pollock will not play in Norwich Union League matches for

Ralph Dellor03-Apr-2002As an indication of the problem facing English county clubs with the hiring of overseas players, Warwickshire have come to an agreement with the United Cricket Board of South Africa that Shaun Pollock will not play in Norwich Union League matches for the county this season.Originally, the UCB had favoured their captain taking the whole of the period of the English summer off so that he could conserve his energies for the World Cup, scheduled to be played in South Africa in 2003. However, Warwickshire have managed to arrive at a suitable compromise with the UCB that will satisfy everyone.Warwickshire coach, Bob Woolmer, who used to be in charge of the South African national side, had already resigned himself to losing Pollock for the end of the season, when he would be required for national duty during a limited-overs series in Morocco and then the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. The announcement that Australia will be playing against Pakistan in June with three one-day internationals in a week will cause additional concern to counties as international commitments encroach further into the English season. With the Tangier tournament likely to involve South Africa, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and Pakistan now going to Australia, several counties are likely to be without their overseas players for a significant period of the summer.Middlesex, for example, will be without Abdur Razzaq until after the re-arranged series in Pakistan against New Zealand until May 20th, and then will find him packing his bags early to go to Morocco and on to the Champions Trophy. However, they will not be losing him for the Australian trip.A spokesman said: “When we signed Razzaq we thought it was a real coup because Pakistan had nothing arranged at the time. Then, all of a sudden, we heard that he would not be arriving until May 20th.”But we have got him from then until the middle of August, because we understand from the Pakistan Cricket Board that he will not be required to go to Australia in June. We don’t know why that is, but we’re more than happy to go along with it.”In Razzaq’s absence until the end of May, Middlesex have signed Australian pace bowler Ashley Noffke, who toured England last summer as a replacement for the injured Nathan Bracken. Not surprisingly, Middlesex is fully behind the proposal to allow two overseas players to be signed by each county when the matter is discussed by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Estamos trabalhando – sintetiza o satisfeito comandante.

Bull wants Bruno Lage to keep Adama Traore at Wolves - Exclusive

Wolves fans were often bored watching their team last season with a lack of threat in the final third, so Bruno Lage must implement an attacking style of play as he did at Benfica. To do that, he’s got to keep Adama Traore according to Wolves legend, Steve Bull.

Lage has been well known for his attacking style of play which saw his Benfica side score a mesmerising 85 goals in just 27 matches, winning 18 of their 19 league fixtues as they romped to the Liga Nos title. Someone who could help implement that at Molineux is Traore, but Lage could have a battle on his hands to keep the linked-away winger.

The former assistant coach at both Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday is sure to bring about a more front-foot approach, something that would appear to suit Wolves as they boast attacking options such as Pedro Neto, Traore, Daniel Podence and Raul Jimenez, although those four players only managed to score a combined total of 14 goals in the Premier League last season.

If Wolves are to play a more attacking style of football going forward then Traore must be part of it with his raw pace and strength a huge asset to Lage, if he wishes to start the winger or bring him on as an impact sub, something Bull spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern about:

“If Lage wants to play 4-4-2 then he should keep Traore and put him on the right or the left and have one of Podence or Neto on the other side of Jimenez and that would be a good front three.

“I think if he wants to play attacking football then he’s got to keep him.”

Traore is by far and away one of the most difficult players to come up against as he is relentless and last season was no different as he attempted 214 dribbles in the league which was 50 more than Sadio Mane who attempted the second-most so, Lage would be mad to try and move him on and not to deploy him in a more attacking system.

Aston Villa given transfer boost over Axel Tuanzebe

Aston Villa have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Manchester United centre-back Axel Tuanzebe.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that Dean Smith’s side have got their sights set on bringing the English defender back to Villa Park for a second spell at the club, and now, Football Insider have delivered an update on the situation.

It said: “The Midlands giants are front of the queue to make a move for the versatile 23-year-old after registering their interest in a deal.

“A Villa source has told Football Insider that the club have been given encouragement that United are planning to let Tuanzebe go in the current window. The 20-times champions have been sounded out by Villa over a potential deal and they will listen to offers if they can secure a replacement.”Dean Smith wants an athletic centre-back with Premier League experience to provide cover and competition for first-choice duo Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa. Tuanzebe has been targeted as he fits the profile of the recruitment team and has the potential to develop.” Dean Smith will be buzzing

In a highly successful first loan spell at Villa Park, Tuanzebe played 35 times for Villa during the 2018/2019 campaign, helping to secure promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs.

And then, speaking ahead of Villa’s clash with United back in 2019, Smith himself said: “He is a terrific guy. He’s got a terrific attitude, that is the thing which will stand him in good stead with his career. I can’t speak highly enough of him.

“He was a big part of why we got promoted last season. I loved working with him, and I would like to think I helped in a small part in his development. I look forward to seeing him, but hopefully he doesn’t play too well against us.”

So, it’s no surprise that Villa are targeting a move for Tuanzebe, and given this latest transfer update on their pursuit of the centre-back, there’s no questioning Smith will be buzzing at the prospect of joining forces with him once again.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa have been handed an encouraging transfer update…
