Serie A expert backs Fonseca to do well at Everton - Exclusive

Everton are diving through their list of potential managers following the swift departure of Carlo Ancelotti back to Real Madrid and Forza Italian Football editor in chief Conor Clancy has backed Paulo Fonseca to do well at Goodison Park if given the chance.

The Toffees will need to get this appointment spot on as they have spent far too much money over the last few years to be languishing in mid-table, and Fonseca has been tipped as a contender to take up the hot seat at Everton by The Athletic.

Fonseca was the man who guided Roma to the Europa League semi-final which they ultimately lost against Manchester United because of their defensive frailties, however they showed glimpses of real quality especially on the counter-attack and from set-pieces.

Everton have hired and sacked their fair share of managers recently with the likes of Marco Silva, Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce the most recent examples, but Clancy has backed Fonseca to be the man to get it right at Everton, as he told Football FanCast exclusively:

“He got Roma to the semi-final of the Europa League which they shouldn’t have been anywhere near, and I know they got hammered in the end by Man United but that was just a 15-minute collapse.

“I quite like Fonseca and I do think that level of job just below the very top tier is one that he would do really well at and I think if he got the Everton job then I’d back him to do a very decent bit of work there.”

Everton started the season brightly, however, once their form fell off a cliff in 2021 their hopes of a European spot were dashed and considering they lost to the likes of Sheffield United and Newcastle United at home, fans must have expected that outcome.

The Toffees may struggle to keep some of their top players such as James Rodriguez and Richarlison now that Ancelotti’s has left as he appeared to be the glue keeping them all together after several poor seasons at Everton.

Ele vai saber colocar a equipe no devido lugar.

Norris tips Portsmouth to re-sign Harvey White from Tottenham

David Norris believes it would be great business should Portsmouth re-sign Harvey White for next season.

The 19-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan from Tottenham and featured heavily under both Kenny Jackett and then Danny Cowley.

Whilst starts were few and far between, White made 21 League One appearances and scored his first professional goal in the victory at Oxford in February.

And with just two senior appearances under his belt at Spurs, the teenager is a certainty to be loaned out once again.

White recently said that he loved his time at Fratton Park, meaning a return could be on the cards, and it’s a deal that former midfielder Norris would like to see happen.

“If they could get him that would be a good signing,” he told The Transfer Tavern. “The couple of speak I spoke to said he looks hungry and wants to improve.

“And that is right up the Cowleys’ street, so I think that would be a very good signing, especially based on what he’s done so far.”

With Tottenham having an abundance of quality midfielders at the club, White is going to need further experience before he’s able to challenge for a regular first-team place.

And having made great strides at Pompey already, there’s perhaps no better place for him to continue his development.

Waugh's Aussies make it sweet sixteen

It was a day Sourav Ganguly would love to forget and Steve Waugh would remember for a long time to come

Anand Vasu01-Mar-2001It was a day Sourav Ganguly would love to forget and Steve Waugh would remember for a long time to come. While Waugh led the rampaging Aussies to a crushing ten wicket victory over India in the first Test at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai in under three days, his counterpart could contribute little in terms of captaincy and less with the bat. The contrast in styles of leadership and indeed approach and ability were glaring in the whitewash. Waugh juggled his bowlers well, giving them the fields they wanted and kept up the pressure incessantly. Ganguly in turn failed to rise to the occasion and could do little but watch helplessly even as the Australians took a 1-0 lead in the threeTest series.Beginning the day on 58/2, India needed to bat positively, yet solidly, to bring the momentum back in their favour. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid had their task cut out for them. Starting off well, Dravid and Tendulkar seemed to know exactly what was required of them. Stonewalling against some hostile fast bowling from Jason Gillespie in particular, the pair defied the Australians. Going through to lunch at 116/2 the two might well have been pleased with their efforts. If they were, it was premature. The post lunch session started with a bang. Tendulkar helped himself to a couple of sizzling boundaries and set the pulses of the crowd racing. However, it was not to last long enough to get India out of the woods. Tendulkar, pulling a Mark Waugh long hop hard, found Justin Langer’s shoulder at forward short leg. The ball ballooned up in the air towards no man’s land. No man’s land? Not really. Ricky Ponting, searing across the turf at midwicket, leapt full length and perfectly parallel to the ground at full stretch and pulled off a sensational catch. It was exactly the inspirational effort Australia needed.Tendulkar made 65 (107 balls, 11 fours) in addition to his first innings 76. A lone hand it was from the man from Mumbai. At 154/3 India were still in a position from which they could have at least given the Aussies a run for their money. Unfortunately a string of low scores – Ganguly (1), Laxman (12), Agarkar (0) put paid to any such hopes. Ganguly needlessly ran himself out, a nervous Laxman edged to the keeper and Agarkar picked up his seventh consecutive duck against the Aussies. Dravid, who toiled hard, made things out to be a bit more difficult than they actually were. Painfully compiling runs, the Karnataka middle order bat played all over a Shane Warne legspinner wide outside the leg stump and was bowled around the legs. Dravid made 39 off 196 balls. At that stage it was all over, with the Aussies moving in for the kill. Javagal Srinath batting one handed provided some comic relief but served no real purpose. All out for 219, India set Australia a paltry target of 47 for victory. Matthew Hayden (28, 21 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) and Michael Slater (19, 21 balls, 4 fours) knocked off the required runs in just seven overs. The elation in the Australian dressing room was plain for all to see. Man of the match Adam Gilchrist ran from captain to coach giving them high fives andembraces. And why not? It was after all the vice captain’s quickfire 122 that set up a memorable Australian victory. This win makes it sixteen in a row for the Australians. When the winning streak is finally broken, it will be a formidable figure. The first Test match was one of those games where not a moment went by without something exciting happening. There was never a dull moment. Perhaps an avoidable moment or two however. When Dravid pulled a short ball from Fleming in the direction of Slater at square leg things came to a boil. Diving low, Slater scooped the ball up and claimed the catch. Umpire Venkataraghavan was not convinced about the legality of the catch and referred the matter to the third umpire. Television replays suggested that the ball had come off the turf. Ruled not out by the third umpire, Dravid watched in shock as Slater went over to umpire Venkat and exchanged words with him. The New South Welshman appeared to be less than impressed with the decision. If that was not enough, Slater went across to Dravid and gave him a piece of his mind. Unfortunately, the things he said are probably not the kind that any editor would allow to go to print. Suffice it to say that Slater overstepped the line. Match referee, Cammie Smith of the West Indies looked into the matter and let off Slater with a warning. It remains to be seen whether the Australian Cricket Board will take any action on their own.

Ipswich miss out on Power deal

A major update has emerged on Ipswich Town target Max Power, regarding where he will be playing his football next season.

What’s the talk?

Ipswich Town target Max Power has officially signed for League One rivals Wigan Athletic. Power has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Wigan and will link up with his new teammates at the start of next month upon the expiry of his deal at Sunderland.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported earlier this month that Ipswich manager Paul Cook was keen on a reunion with Power after working with the midfielder earlier in his career. Ipswich have now missed out on a deal for Power, with Wigan swooping in to secure a deal with the Sunderland man.

Wigan manager Leam Richardson hailed the “fantastic” midfielder upon his arrival at the club. He told Wigan’s official website:

“Max is a great lad who I really enjoyed working with the first time around. He is fantastic in the dressing room, and a great character to have around the place.

“He still has a lot to offer, he can play a number of different positions as he did during his last spell, and we are delighted to have him back at Wigan Athletic.”

Cook will be devastated

Ipswich manager Cook will be devastated by this update as he has missed out on landing a familiar face ahead of next season. Cook managed Power during their previous spells at Wigan together, which means that the 27-year-old would likely not have needed the adaptation period other signings may need to adjust to Cook and his management style.

Power could have been an excellent addition to Cook’s squad too. He enjoyed a solid season with Sunderland in League One as he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.74, producing five goals and three assists, across 44 appearances.

He could have added additional, proven, quality to Cook’s options, whilst also being able to play in a variety of positions. The £3.9k-per-week dynamo was deployed as a defensive midfielder, right-back, centre-back and central midfielder in League One for Sunderland last season.

Cook will not be best pleased with Wigan securing Power’s services ahead of Ipswich. CEO Mark Ashton will now need to work hard to source alternative targets in the coming weeks to make sure that Cook has enough quality to mount a promotion push next season.
