A first half penalty from James Ward-Prowse and a rocket from Che Adams sealed the deal for the visitors, which eased the woes of Danny Ings leaving the field injured before the 20-minute mark.

Bednarek, who has deputised at right-back on three occasions recently, was back in his natural position and shone for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side from a defensive point of view.

Per Sofascore, the Polish defender made seven clearances, four interceptions and three tackles as Southampton successfully kept a clean sheet in south Yorkshire.

Unsurprisingly, many supporters were pleased with Bednarek’s “immense” performance and were reassured to see him excel when back in his natural position. One fan said the 27-year-old was “solid as usual”, a fair comment as the Pole has made more interceptions per game and won the second-most aerial duels of any Saints player this season, per WhoScored:

According to reports, Aston Villa are one of a number of Premier League sides interested in signing Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Despite signing Morgan Sanson back in January from Ligue 1 side Marseille, it appears Dean Smith isn’t done with reinforcing Villa’s midfield options ahead of next season.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that the Midlands club have got their sights set on Brownhill, with the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Wolves also having scouted him over the past few months.

The report adds that Burnley are facing a battle to keep hold of the 25-year-old after a “hugely impressive campaign”.

He silenced Jack Grealish

Having only joined Burnley last year, Brownhill has already established himself as a key part of Sean Dyche’s side, making 23 appearances in the Premier League already.

One of his best performances in a Clarets shirt came in a 0-0 draw against Villa back in December, with the 25-year-old just overpowering Jack Grealish on the day – the Villa talisman lined up in the number ten role, with Brownhill part of the Burnley engine room.

While Grealish still tried to work his magic, the Burnley man looked to get tight to him all the time, making the contest as physical as possible.

The £17m-rated Brownhill made a mammoth five interceptions, which was comfortably more than any other player on the pitch, and double that of his impressive season average of 2.4 per game in the Premier League.

As well as constantly trying to stop Grealish getting the ball in dangerous areas, Brownhill was also strong in the challenge, winning seven of his 11 total duels – he’s won 4.9 per match this season.

It was no surprise then that Grealish ended up losing the ball on 11 occasions, while none of his six attempts on goal found the target. Brownhill was an absolute machine in the middle of the park for Burnley and completely silenced Villa’s main man.

If Johan Lange was watching the midfielder, it’s no surprise that he appears to be interested in making a move for him in the summer.

According to John Percy’s report for The Telegraph, should West Brom – who currently occupy 19th place in the Premier League table, eight points from safety – suffer relegation this season, some of the Baggies’ highest earners will face “wage cuts of up to 50 per cent,” while other players will see “pay reductions of 40 per cent” as well as a “number of departures” being anticipated – if the club do indeed drop down to the Championship.

After Percy relayed his report on Twitter, fans of West Brom flocked to have their say on the matter, with many suggesting that the club’s wage structure altering in the result of relegation is the sign of the club being well run, while other stated their belief that, following the performances of many of their players this season, they deserve a drop in pay.

Apesar de contar apenas com treino dos reservas, a manhã desta quinta-feira foi agitada no São Paulo. O CT da Barra Funda recebeu a visita de Milton Cruz, demitido na semana passada e que foi ao local para se despedir dos ex-colegas. Enquanto isso, Edgardo Bauza pôde celebrar a reintegração ao grupo de Wesley e Wilder, recuperados de problemas musculares.

A dupla já havia feito atividades com bola nos outros dias desta semana, mas sempre acompanhada do preparador físico Bruno Militano. Nesta quinta, os dois participaram normalmente de treino técnico em campo reduzido e duas equipes de sete atletas. Wesley, inclusive, se destacou com boa movimentação e bonitos gols. Kelvin, autor do gol salvador no 1 a 1 com o Linense na última quarta-feira, foi outro com desempenho a ser exaltado.

Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Danny Mills has sent a warning to David Moyes and West Ham United over interest from other clubs in midfielder Tomas Soucek, coming after a development that GSB look set to offer him a new deal to ward off suitors.

Indeed, the same outlet recently reported that Soucek is set to be given a bumper new contract ahead of the summer window, with Mills sending a warning that they may need to tie him down as soon as possible.

The pundit hinted that Soucek would have no loyalty to stay at the London Stadium should a club come in with larger wages on offer, suggesting that the Czech sensation needs to be offered a new deal as a ‘very good idea’ in order to fend off other clubs who could ‘come sniffing’.

Mills sends Soucek warning

“I’m not sure a new contract would put him up there with the top earners and the likes of Declan Rice and Michail Antonio,” explained Mills.

“Of course, West Ham now know other teams are going to come sniffing. Let’s just say he’s on £40,000-a-week which is good money and all of a sudden a big club comes in and says ‘You know what, we want him for £60,000-a-week’. Should he have a huge degree of loyalty to West Ham? Probably not, is the answer.

“Then you’ve got to pay whatever to replace him plus wages. It’s good business, he’s a good player and he’s proven that.

“To keep him at the football club would be a very good idea.”

Transfer Tavern take

Time will tell whether Soucek is offered a new contract before the summer, but Mills has warned West Ham they could lose the 25-year-old if action isn’t taken.

Given how influential he has been for the Irons this season (top league goalscorer, second-best performer as per WhoScored), it should come as no surprise if other clubs begin testing the Hammers’ resolve regarding the Czech midfielder.
