All aboard the ‘let’s-get-carried-away’ train. We’re six games into the new Premier League season, and already pundits and players alike are beginning to spout the usual ‘do-or-die’ drivel.

Just before the clash against Brighton, Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles came out and declared the game was a “six-pointer”. Naturally, the comment didn’t go down too well with Magpies fans.

Now, Garth Crooks has joined in on the act by delivering an incredibly hyperbolic assessment of a key incident during the game.

Brighton forward Aaron Connolly thought he had sealed all three points for the Seagulls with a late effort, but saw his chip cleared off the line in dramatic fashion by Fabian Schar. Prompt ‘Mystic Garth’.

“The chip by Aaron Connolly was a certain goal and it needed something very special from a defender to clear the danger. That moment of magic came from Fabian Schar whose clearance off the line was nothing short of amazing. The clearance off the line by Schar could, come the end of the season, be Newcastle and Steve Bruce’s lifeline.”

Lifeline? Really? To put things into context at just how early things are at the moment, Newcastle find themselves three points off bottom, but also three points away from seventh.

Even if the Magpies had lost against Brighton, there are still 96 points left to be won in the season. Granted, Bruce’s side probably won’t be getting even half of that, but the age-old cliche of there still being a lot of football to play stands.

Perhaps Crooks simply wanted to highlight the torrent of ill-feeling that would have come Bruce’s way had the Tyneside club slipped to a home defeat. But even still, after getting rid of Rafa Benitez and installing his own man in charge, there is no way Mike Ashley would be looking to throw the towel in just yet. The Newcastle owner would gladly watch the Magpies’ suffering last even longer.

How football changes. After enjoying a barn-storming start to his managerial reign at Manchester United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has well and truly hit a rough patch.

The Red Devils have endured a difficult opening to the current campaign, and appear to have particular trouble in picking up wins away from home. Last time out in the Premier League, United were handed a 2-0 defeat by West Ham.

Now, a rather alarming stat has come to light surrounding the side’s results in away games under Solskjaer. In the Norwegian’s first nine fixtures away from Old Trafford, the Red Devils rattled off nine victories, scoring 23 goals in the process.

In contrast, United’s last nine games has seen them go winless, with just five goals scored and a staggering 18 conceded – essentially, two a game.

After hearing about the side’s worrying turn of fortune, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their concerns about the situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side seemed to think it is the final straw with Solskjaer, with one fan in particular urging the club to sack him in light of the record.

Some fans just revealed their shock at seeing the numbers laid bare, and wondered how on earth it happened.

وأضاف: “كانت مباراة متقاربة هناك، ستكون مهمة صعبة، سنحاول أن نبذل قصارى جهدنا للفوز”.

وأتم نوير تصريحاته: “الأمر سيعتمد على ظروف اليوم بالإضافة إلى الموقف والإعداد للمواجهة بشكل صحيح”.

Unai Emery had a big announcement to make last week.

Many Arsenal fans had been waiting to see who would be given the captaincy officially, and they were finally put out of their misery as all was revealed by the former Sevilla boss. Once they found out who had been given the responsibility of leading the team, though, they may have wished they hadn’t been told at all.

Emery reportedly decided to bestow the armband on Granit Xhaka following a secret ballot amongst his teammates. The midfielder is one of the more senior players at the Emirates Stadium, having joined in 2016 from Borussia Monchengladbach, and he has experience as a leader, having captained his country, Switzerland.

However, his display against Manchester United showed that it may be all a bit too much for him at club level. The 27-year-old put in a disappointing performance, ducking out of the way of Scott McTominay’s shot before it nestled into the back of Bernd Leno’s net. A skipper should be putting his body on the line, not trying to get out of the way when the ball is coming in his direction.

Of course, it is all well and good saying that someone shouldn’t have been given the captaincy, but it is pointless without suggesting an alternative. As such, there is a strong case to be made that Matteo Guendouzi should have been chosen instead.

Yes, he is just 20 years of age, but the commanding performances he has put in so far this season show that he can deal with the responsibility of being one of the first names on the teamsheet.

He has started in all seven Premier League matches, playing the full 90 minutes in all but one game. Even at such a young age, he is already receiving big praise from some of the sport’s legends, such as Cesc Fabregas. On his Twitter page after the clash against Manchester United, the World Cup winner said, “gotta love Guendouzi. Can play good or not so good but always shows up in difficult moments at such a young age. Big future ahead of him at Arsenal”.

That is exactly why he should have been appointed. Very rarely does a game go by when the France U21 international is not involved in the action or does not have an impact on his team. Unfortunately for Xhaka, those occasions come too often.

There is one overriding factor as to why the former Bundesliga player is not the right choice though: his popularity. A captain is meant to lead his team, which doesn’t only mean the players on the pitch, but also the club’s fans. How can that be done effectively when the supporters don’t trust or like you? Guendouzi is already a player who has been suggested as a potential captain by the Emirates Stadium faithful. For Xhaka, it is quite the opposite, with one fan even claiming it was a “nonsense decision”.

Guendouzi has his whole career ahead of him, and appointing him would have sent a message to the players and the supporters that they are planning for the future.

Xhaka seems like a safe option, but, such is his relationship with the fans, it seems like it could all end in tears.

وأدى ذلك إلى إصدار الاتحاد الهولندي بيانًا أعلن فيه أنهم لن يقاطعو النهائيات لأن ذلك لن يفيد العمال، ونتج عن ذلك تعرض الاتحاد لانتقادات شديدة.

وقال فينالدوم في المؤتمر الذي نشرته صحيفة “ميرور” الإنجليزية: “إنه موضوع كبير، لقد تحدثنا نحن اللاعبون عن ذلك بالطبع، وكذلك مع الاتحاد الهولندي ومنظمة العفو الدولية”.

وأضاف: “نعتقد أنه ينبغي أن نشارك في البطولة لإحداث تأثير أكبر، ثم يمكننا أن يكون لنا تأثير أكبر من أجل التغيير، إذا وضعنا خطة مع دول أخرى للاهتمام بهذا الأمر، فهذا أفضل، الآن لا يزال من الصعب تحديد كيفية القيام بذلك”.

وأردف: “لا يزال يتعين علينا التأهل، مع اقتراب كأس العالم سيصبح ذلك أكثر وضوحًا”.

واستكمل: “كما هو الحال مع العنصرية، يجب علينا جميعًا أن نفعل شيئًا حيال ذلك (الانتهاكات ضد العمال)، لكن نحن لم نختر أيضًا إقامة كأس العالم في قطر”.

وأوضح: “أعتقد أن الكثير من الناس لم يكونوا دائمًا على دراية بالوضع في قطر، لم أسمع هذه القصص حقًا إلا عندما ذهبت للعب كأس العالم للأندية هناك مع ليفربول، لم أكن أعرف عدد الوفيات (6500)، لم أكن أعلم ذلك، أعتقد أن هذا ينطبق على الكثير من اللاعبين”.

وأبدى فينالدوم غضبه في نهاية المؤتمر، حيث التفت إلى الصحفي الذي بدأ معه الأسئلة حول إجراء هولندا تجاه الانتهاكات في قطر، وقال له: “هل لي أن أقول شيئًا آخر؟!”.

وتابع: “كنت أفكر في السؤال الذي طرحته عن العنصرية وقطر، هل تفهم حقًا ما تفعله؟ أنت تحاول أن تخبرني إننا لا نستطيع الدفاع عن أولئك الذين يتعرضون للعنصرية لمجرد أننا سنلعب في قطر، هذا أمر خاطىء جدًا”.

واستمر: “أنت الآن تقول في الواقع أنه إذا تم معاملتك على أساس عنصري، فلا يُسمح لك بالدفاع عن نفسك، لا يمكن إجراء مقارنة بهذا الشكل، قصة العنصرية صعبة للغاية، أعتقد أننا لعبنا مع هولندا في جنوب إفريقيا والبرازيل، ليس كل شيء يسير على ما يرام هناك”.

واختتم: “لقد كنت أفكر في الأمر وأعتقد أنه غريب، أعتقد في الواقع أنك تقول إنه إذا حدث ذلك وقمت بذلك (مناهضة العنصرية) فعليك فعل ذلك هنا أيضًا (تجنب اللعب في قطر بسبب الانتهاكات)”.

ومن جانبه، رد الصحفي المذكور بأنه لم يكن يرغب في المقارنة بين الموقفين.

The young talent scored a brilliant back-heeled goal for Barca’s B team recently, in the 89th minute, no less, and he seems to be getting much more attention now.

Or at least, he seems to be rather popular among the Barca fans, who were showering him with all sorts of compliments and praise in reply to his latest Twitter post, both gushing over his goal and his skill in general.

Words like “crack” were thrown around a lot, meaning star in English.

It still remains to be seen whether the 20-year-old will ever reach his potential and earn a promotion into the senior team but at the moment, he already seems to be a fan-favourite.

Newcastle earned a 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, and Martin Keown was full of praise for Premier League debutant and matchwinner Matty Longstaff.

What did he say?

It was a historic day for the Longstaff brothers Matty and Sean as they partnered each other in the Magpies midfield, and it was made even sweeter by a valuable victory over the Red Devils.

The result should also relieve some pressure on Steve Bruce after a 5-0 loss to Leicester the week before. He too was full of praise for the young midfielder and that means he could become a permanent fixture in the side.

His performance wasn’t lost on Martin Keown, either, who featured alongside Alan Shearer as a pundit on Match of the Day.

He said, as reported by The Mag: “He made more passes, he covered more distance, he really put in a performance. It was almost to say to the boss, ‘Hey, look at me, you have overlooked me for too long.’

“It was like a Paul Scholes.

“I know that’s big praise and they are big boots for him to copy, but him and his brother – Carrick, Scholes…you know, they did very well.”

It is certainly big praise for the 19-year-old considering he only has two senior appearances for Newcastle, but he covered ground well throughout and acted as the perfect partner for his brother, culminating in him being named Man of the Match.

Not only did he cap off his Premier League debut with a great goal, but Longstaff performed well in a number of areas that meant he was crucial to his side’s win, and led his manager to describe his display as one of the greatest debuts he’d seen.

Similarly to his brother, Matty looked to get involved in all aspects of play when he could.

He struck the bar with a brilliant dipping effort in the first half and constantly looked to get the Magpies on the front foot, playing seven long balls to try and advance his team up the pitch, five of which were successful.

Off the ball he was effective, too, managing one tackle and two interceptions he helped to disrupt Man United’s play and that meant they were limited to just three shots on target.

If he can continue to perform at that standard and increase his pass accuracy of only 73%, then he could secure that place alongside his brother and ensure that 2019/20 is his breakthrough season.
