Kieran Trippier has admitted he endured a poor run of form at Tottenham Hotspur last season, per BBC Sport.

What’s the word?

The right-back sealed a £20m move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Trippier’s move came about after a difficult season that was categorised by individual mistakes, namely a comical own goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

And he has now admitted that he was distracted by speculation over his future.

He said: “I’m happy it’s gone. I’m happy to talk about it if people want to – but I’m delighted it’s over.

“There’s no excuse for what happened last season.

“Some things happened – nothing bad, it was just injuries and hearing things like I won’t be there next season in the media.

“It was in the back of my mind: ‘Did they want me?’

“It was important to know – that’s why I sat down with the manager (Mauricio Pochettino) in pre-season and asked the question.”

Finally honest

Trippier previously claimed that he left Spurs because of “behind-the-scenes” developments.

Now he has fronted up.

Throughout last season, the England international was so bad he was actually left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Nations League finals.

It is refreshing to see that he has admitted he has no excuse for his appalling performances but perhaps he should not have tried to mask that previously.

Spurs fans will likely forgive him, though, particularly as they don’t have to watch him in 2019/20.

Not many players in the world look capable of challenging Alisson Becker’s position at Liverpool No.1 right now.

The Brazil international – who cost the Reds £66.8m when they signed him from Roma last summer – won the Premier League Golden Glove for his efforts last season, and also recorded the most clean sheets in the Champions League as the Merseysiders won the competition.

Alisson also won the Golden Glove at this summer’s Copa America, again ending the tournament on the winning side.

He seems practically immovable inbetween the sticks right now.

However, he won’t be Liverpool’s No.1 forever. Nor will 31-year-old Simon Mignolet be his backup for much longer given his age.

The Reds will eventually need fresh blood, and 20-year-old Kamil Grabara could well become Alisson’s successor later down the line.

The Poland Under-21 international – who appeared at this summer’s European Championships – recently joined Huddersfield on a season-long loan deal.

Whilst that alone would’ve been an encouraging sign, he looks set to be Jan Siewert’s No.1 for the 2019/20 campaign after first-choice stopper Jonas Lossl joined Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton earlier in the window.

The 6 foot 5 glovesman is expected to start the Terriers’ Monday night curtain-raiser against Derby County, where in doing so, he will be making his senior debut in English football.

Kamara has only ever appeared on the bench for the Liverpool first-team in a competitive fixture, but signed a new long-term contract before being shipped out on loan to the John Smith’s Stadium – the Reds clearly have a lot of faith in him for the future.

The Championship is an extremely tough division consisting of 46 long, gruelling games between a number of committed outfits, so Kamara should learn his trade in the senior game pretty quickly given the circumstances.

Alisson may have the shirt for the next four, five or even six seasons, but Kamara is definitely taking the right steps to put pressure on the Brazilian for his spot a few years down the line.

Celtic are tracking Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling, as Neil Lennon steps up his chase for a Kieran Tierney replacement, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Lennon is looking at potential names as he searches for left-back cover, having sold Tierney to Arsenal for £25m last week. One name that has come up will be familiar to supporters, with Meling impressing against the Celts in the last few years in European competition.

He did well on four occasions against the Hoops and even notched a goal at Parkhead, so it’s little surprise his name has cropped up as Lennon continues the hunt for a new left-back.

The Hoops boss is hopeful of adding cover for new signing Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo before the September 2nd deadline, and The Scottish Sun understands that Meling fits the profile of what the club is looking for.

The Parkhead side will have to fight off competition from Los Angeles FC if they’re to land the 24-year-old this summer, per the report.

The wrong left-back

The Norwegian full-back is an interesting prospect, but at 24 he is the same age as Bolingoli-Mbombo. The Belgian arrived for £3m, so has a reasonable expectation of starting more often than not, and signing a player of the same age might jeopardise this.

Meling isn’t the only left-back the Bhoys have been linked to since Tierney opted for the Premier League though, with Kilmarnock’s Greg Taylor also being touted, per The Daily Record.

In Taylor, you’d have a new arrival that could come in and not derail Bolingoli-Mbombo’s progression and adjustment to life in the Scottish Premiership, instead playing a supporting role to the 24 year-old. Aged just 21, Taylor is also more malleable than Meling, meaning Lennon could shape him into the exact specification of left-back he is looking for.

Taylor also has the added bonus of being a proven Premiership player, something that could be pivotal as Celtic look to start the season quickly, rather than dealing with two left-backs coming to grips with the style of play in Scotland.

Meling has wowed Parkhead before, but Celtic would be wise to look a little closer to home in their search for a Tierney replacement.

Aston Villa didn’t kick off their Premier League return in winning fashion but there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

Beginning your first top-flight campaign in three seasons against the Champions League runners-up, Tottenham Hotspur was never going to be an easy task.

Villa took the lead and looked competent for large periods of the game but it was a mistake from club captain Jack Grealish, who was caught on the ball close to his own box, that cost the Villans a goal.

Following the match, he tweeted his thoughts:

A number of Villa supporters reacted by throwing their weight behind the 23-year-old and the team.

One fan said it was because of him that the club are in the Premier League playing Champions League opposition rather than playing a team of Luton Town’s calibre whilst another added that it was a brilliant effort to keep them at bay for 75 minutes.

Others asked the midfielder to prove people wrong with one supporter claiming that it was a learning curve, using the old cliche that Rome wasn’t built in a day in comparison to Villa’s ambitions.

Wolves boss Nuno Santo rung the changes for their Europa League second leg against Armenian side Pyunik on Thursday night, giving starts to three of Wolves’ four senior summer arrivals.

Pedro Neto and Jesus Vallejo were handed debuts whilst Patrick Cutrone was given a first start after a pair of substitute appearances.

Diogo Jota scored the pick of the bunch with an acrobatic overhead kick in the 87th minute clinching a second 4-0 victory in the space of a week.

Also on the scoresheet was Neto, who provided an assist on his debut for Morgan Gibbs-White’s first-ever goal for the club.

The performance of the young winger has given Nuno plenty of food for thought as Wolves will now face five games in the space of 14 days.

On the Chalkboard

Wolves lacked much squad depth last season having heavily relied on the attacking exploits of both Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota – between them they scored 47% of their Premier League total (22 of 47) with Jimenez netting 13 goals from 38 appearances and Jota scoring nine from 33.

Nuno has taken steps to rectify that this summer through the arrival of four senior squad players as Thursday night marked the first major game time for most of them.

Those measures were a smart move from the Portuguese boss as they face such a hectic schedule after qualifying for the Europa League. Wolves have already played four European games compared to just the one in the Premier League so far.

However, one player who can help them is the 5 foot 8 Neto, an individual who dazzled on debut which could suggest he has more to bring to the team than just a bit-part backup role.

Neto was a regular threat in attacking situations for Wolves on Thursday which should have come as no surprise following remarks made about him when he joined.

Alex Goncalves, a Portuguese football expert, described the attributes of Neto, saying he offers great pace and dribbling, whilst he’s also very confident on the ball.

That appears to be exactly the case after getting his first glimpses in the old gold shirt with Tim Spiers writing that the 19-year-old was Cutrone’s ‘support act’, putting in an all left-footed performance displaying his close control and ability.

It may have been against lowly opposition but you can only play against what is put in front of you and Neto surely ticked all the boxes.

Given how under the radar his acquisition went, this will have been a hugely pleasing performance, especially given how Helder Costa performed last term, scoring just once from a similar role.

Neto has already equalled that and could act as somewhat of a replacement in the future.

وأوضحت أن أي تحرك من قِبل بطل الدوري الفرنسي لضم النجم الإنجليزي يعتمد على مستقبل الثنائي نيمار وكيليان مبابي.

وارتبط كلا اللاعبين بإمكانية الرحيل عن باريس سان جيرمان، حيث يتواجد مبابي على رادار ريال مدريد، بينما تشير تقارير سابقة إلى رغبة برشلونة في استعادة خدمات نيمار.

وأفادت الصحيفة أن بوتشيتينو يتمتع بعلاقة وثيقة مع كين منذ فترة الأرجنتيني في توتنهام.

وأشارت إلى أن الثنائي ما زالا يتبادلان الرسائل عبر تطبيق الواتس آب، كما أن كين هنأ بوتشيتينو بعد أن أصبح الأخير مدربًا لـ باريس سان جيرمان خلفًا لـ توماس توخيل.

ويؤمن بوتشيتينو بأن باريس سان جيرمان سيكون وجهة مثالية لـ كين من أجل منحه فرصة الفوز بالألقاب التي يتوق إليها، حيث إنه لم يحقق أي منها مع الديوك.

أشاد آندريس إنييستا أسطورة نادي برشلونة، بلاعب الفريق الكتالوني الحالي، بيدري جونزاليس، مشيرًا إلى أنه يظهر بمستوى أكبر من عمره.

وأكمل: “مقتنع وأعلم أنه مستعد جيدًا لكل شيء، ويعرف ما يجب عليه فعله، يستمتع بالكرة ولا يبدو أنه يبلغ من العمر 18 عامًا”.

واختتم: “لذلك هذا هو الشيء الأهم، أن يواصل النمو في برشلونة، وبالتأكيد سيكون مستقبل كبير للنادي، وله أيضًا”.
