Revealed: 69% of fans feel Chelsea benefit most from Martial and Willian swap

Willian was the only Chelsea player who maintained his standards during the disastrous 2015/16 season that saw Jose Mourinho sacked before Christmas and Manchester United’s long-running interest in the Brazilian winger suggests that the Portuguese has not forgotten that in a hurry.

Barcelona’s signing of Malcom from under the noses of Roma has reportedly left the coast clear for Mourinho to reunite with his former charge at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial is reportedly surplus to requirements at United since Alexis Sanchez came in mid-season and shunted him down the pecking order.

Furthermore, he is apparently willing to defy Mourinho’s wishes to sell him to a foreign club by remaining in the Premier League, which serves to offer the Blues encouragement.

So, we suggested that a straight swap deal between the two widemen would make sense but asked which club would benefit the most from that arrangement.

69 per cent of those who responded said that it would be a better deal for Maurizio Sarri than Mourinho, as shown by the full results below…

Three last-minute signings Man United could still make this week

Manchester United have had a worrying pre-season campaign so far and fans of the Old Trafford outfit will be hoping their club brings in players this week.

Jose Mourinho has seemed disgruntled during the entirety of the summer. He seems to lack belief his side can compete with their rivals and his relationship with the board seems to be at an all-time low. Perhaps, some optimism could be injected into the Portuguese manager by the way of some new talent entering Old Trafford before Thursday’s transfer window deadline.

Last season will have been a disappointment for Mourinho, with the Red Devils not securing a single trophy. The January transfer deal to bring in Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal could also been seen as a disappointment, but United fans will be hoping for a much better campaign this time out.

With Liverpool and Arsenal strengthening in particular, the Red Devils need to ensure they are in the best possible shape to compete before the season begins.

With that in mind, here are three signings Mourinho could still make this week…

One of the stars of England’s World Cup campaign in Russia, Harry Maguire is a talent in demand.

Although Leicester City are trying to keep hold of their star defender, United continue to trail Maguire. His confidence on the ball would make him a valuable asset to Mourinho’s side, as United’s defence has lacked something ever since Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic retired. Maguire will make surging runs forward, helping to overload a team setting up to defend against the Red Devils.

Maguire is valued at £31.5million by Transfermarkt.

This will be a huge deal if United can wrap up the English star.

Another player who had a fantastic World Cup and is reportedly the number one target for United this summer.

The Croatia international helped his country to a World Cup final. Despite Perisic scoring with an excellent effort against France, Croatia eventually lost 4-2 to the Blues.

The attacking midfielder is a ket part of Inter Milan’s team; his skill and game intelligence would be a major benefit to United next season, and so would the goals and assists the 29-year-old could provide.

The Tottenham centre-back has been linked with United for a large portion of the summer. Man United and Tottenham have failed to reach common ground over the value of the experienced centre-back.

The Belgium international has been a key part of Tottenham’s defence for many seasons, so their reluctance to see the player go is unsurprising.

This deal could still get done within the week, but Ed Woodward is going to have to splash the cash if he wants to bring Alderweireld to Old Trafford.

Match Preview: Arsenal vs Man City

The Premier League has returned and the fixture-makers have given us a fascinating game to end the opening weekend on, as reigning champions Manchester City travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Unai Emery’s new-look Arsenal side. It’s hard to tell exactly what we should expect from the Gunners as they embark on a new era, or for that matter a City team that has squandered every Premier League title defence they’ve staged before. But hoping to shed some light on how this one will pan out, our match preview includes everything you need to know ahead of Sunday’s 4pm kickoff…

What History Tells Us

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Arsenal have traditionally held the upper hand in this fixture – in fact, it actually took until 2006 for Manchester City to beat the Gunners in the Premier League, losing all but three of their first 18 meetings. Accordingly, Arsenal lead the way in terms of goals and clean sheets but this clash has balanced out somewhat since City’s Sheik takeover. Its now the Citizens who have lost just two of the last 12 encounters, their last defeat to the Gunners coming all the way back in 2015.

//fixtureinfocus.podiant.co/latest/embed/

City have never fared too well on Arsenal’s patch though – last season’s victory at the Emirates Stadium was their first since 2012 – and for those looking to take something off the bookies this weekend, a flutter on a red card could well pay off.

Managerial Head-to-Head

Duelling with Guardiola is nothing new for the Arsenal boss – Emery’s faced him ten times before from their days in La Liga. All of those clashes were between Valencia and Barcelona and while Emery was often praised for how his side could make things difficult for the Nou Camp outfit, they never actually beat the current Spanish champions with Guardiola winning six and drawing four.

The last meeting, however, was all the way back in 2012 and quite a lot has changed since then. First and foremost, Emery’s gone on to win eight trophies with Sevilla and PSG and will accordingly feel he’s a more even adversary of Guardiola’s at this moment in time. That said, some things stay the same – Emery’s game-plan still centres around that 4-2-3-1 formation, while Guardiola’s City side line up in his Barcelona-inspired 4-3-3.

Referee Influence – Michael Oliver

At first glance, Michael Oliver’s strict refereeing style benefits attacking teams, simply because of how quick he is to award fouls, penalties and even red cards, which would play straight into Manchester City’s hands this weekend.

But actually, the potential is there for Arsenal to really take advantage of Oliver’s approach, especially bearing in mind that he comparatively ranked much lower for yellow cards per game from the 21 referees to work in the Premier League last season.

After all, City look to break down teams by keeping the ball in play as much as possible and eventually wearing them out with their immaculate passing game. But Oliver’s whistle-happy approach gives the Gunners grounds to really disrupt the rhythm of City’s possession-based philosophy without fearing the consequences too much.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278388″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The Accy Show Premier League double and Weekend Banker”]

In fact, even if Arsenal do give fouls away in dangerous areas, City only scored from five free kicks throughout the whole of last season – a decent if somewhat unspectacular return considering they bagged over 100 goals in total.

That being said, both teams must be wary of Oliver’s high ranking for red cards, especially considering – as previously mentioned – the number City have already suffered in this fixture down the years.

Team News

We’re still operating within the realms of guesswork at this point as Emery doesn’t seem too settled on his strongest starting XI just yet after a pre-season of continuous changes in both shape and personnel. But he’s tested ways to get Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the same starting XI, and we’re tipping both to start on Sunday with the latter moving out wide to accommodate the former up top.

Another recurring theme of pre-season was 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi, who impressed so much over the summer that he may have just weaved his way into Arsenal’s midfield alongside signing Lucas Torreira, who should give the Gunners some much-needed grit at the base of the engine room. Another youngster in Ainsley Maitland-Niles, aged 20, should start as well with fellow left-back options Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac expected to miss out through injury.

Guardiola’s biggest selection headache this weekend, aside from the fact Manchester City boast quality in depth in pretty much every position, is navigating a number of late returns from the World Cup. Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne have only started training this week and although Guardiola described them as being in ‘perfect condition’ it seems unlikely either will start in what’s actually quite an important away game for the reigning champions.

However, we are expecting David Silva to make the cut. He’s recently suffered a knock but has been in training a little longer and could partner Bernardo Silva in central midfield after the Portuguese impressed so much there in the 2-0 win over Chelsea. The other potential change from the starting XI fielded at Wembley is at the back – Aymeric Laporte should be clear to play, but Guardiola may elect against risking the youngster bearing in mind the wealth of alternatives he has at the heart of defence.

Player Ratings: Man City fans vote Bernardo Silva MOTM vs Arsenal

Manchester City kicked off their Premier League campaign this Sunday in the same manner they finished the last, calmly dispensing of Arsenal in a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

There were moments when it appeared the home side would get back into the match but City’s quality eventually told on the opening day of the season against Unai Emery’s new-look Gunners team.

Following the final whistle, we asked Manchester City fans to issue player ratings for each of those involved in the victory. Here’s a quick rundown of the three players who received the highest average scores, including the Man of the Match…

Benjamin Mendy – 8.1: After missing pretty much the whole of last season Mendy is already looking like a new signing for City, bringing an extra element of sheer brawn and offensive flair to their attack when powering forward on the overlap. That was the direct source of both goals on Sunday, as Mendy played a cute square ball across the edge of the box for the opener before cutting back from closer to the byline for City’s second. Pep Guardiola’s clearly keen to keep the Frenchman’s feet on the ground with some harsh words post-match, but Mendy could be a real asset for City this term.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278881″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Kane’s Kryptonite & London’s Biggest Losers”]

Raheem Sterling – 8.2: Silencing the critics once again, it was Sterling who broke the deadlock at the Emirates Stadium with a powerful finish from the peripheries of the Arsenal box. He was involved in most of what City did going forward, and could have opened his account for the season much earlier had it not been for a smart save from Petr Cech. Sterling faces extra competition this season following the arrival of Riyad Mahrez but already appears to be embracing it.

Bernardo Silva (MOTM) – 8.8: Silva put the icing on the cake with City’s second goal, a fantastic conversion of Mendy’s pull-back, but perhaps a rating of 8.8 is a little generous. After all, Silva completed just 70% of his passes, didn’t make a single tackle or interception and failed to create any chances. Then again, statistics don’t always tell the whole story and it’s clear City supporters are chuffed with the 30-cap Portugal international’s performance on Sunday.

Wolves simply have to add a quality striker to their squad, and this is the man they should sign

Wolves got a taste of what Premier League football is all about this weekend as former champions Leicester dispatched the newly promoted Molineux club 2-0 at the King Power.

Nuno Santo’s men have been tipped to perform well in the top flight, but were undone by some experience and guile this weekend, and it really does highlight the need for the club to go out and buy a top class striker in either this or the next window.

One player we at the Transfer Tavern think should be on their radar is Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga.

The former Nottingham Forest man simply oozes goals at Championship level, and with his speed, power, and finishing ability, there is little to doubt that he could well flourish in the Premier League if given the chance.

Assombalonga himself would no doubt relish the crack at the top flight, and would fancy himself to knock in the goals in a team like Wolves have.

While Leo Bonatini and Raul Jimenez offer something, Wolves lack a direct threat through the middle in terms of pace and deadly finishing, and Assombalonga offers just that.

If they can convince Middlesbrough to sell, then Wolves could well be getting just the man they need to complete the jigsaw this season.

Wolves fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Alex Telles is the kind of left-back Manchester United have been crying out for

Manchester United fans will be furious after the Red Devils were beaten by Brighton at the weekend.

Three first-half goals from the Seagulls meant Romelu Lukaku’s strike and a late Paul Pogba penalty were little more than a consolation. Jose Mourinho was desperate to bolster his defence in the summer transfer window to have any hopes of catching Manchester City in the title race. He was proved right against Chris Hughton’s men with a number of individual mistakes costing them dearly.

The January transfer window is the perfect opportunity to right the wrongs of the summer. A new centre-back should again be a priority, but a new left-back should also be considered. While Luke Shaw has made a decent start after being given a chance in the first-team, United should be looking to upgrade. Reports suggest United will make a move for Juventus defender, Alex Sandro after Paris St Germain dropped their interest in the Brazilian. Instead, they should target his national counterpart – Alex Telles.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian enjoyed a sensational season in Liga NOS as Porto were crowned champions to deny Benfica their fifth consecutive league trophy. Telles was a crucial player, scoring three and notching an incredible 13 assists from left-back in 30 appearances. He made an excellent start to the new season, scoring and assisting in the 3-2 win over Belenenses.

Telles would be the perfect alternative for Sandro at a fraction of the price. With blistering pace and excellent dribbling skills, the 25-year-old would give Mourinho a massive threat on the left flank as the former Inter Milan defender can also be used as a winger. The addition of Telles would definitely mean even more goals for Lukaku as the defender averaged 3.2 key passes and 3.8 crosses per game last season (WhoScored).

If Mourinho is in the market for a left-back, Telles should be the man he signs.

Watford fans make predictions for showdown against Crystal Palace

Watford v Crystal Palace may not be the biggest Premier League game of the weekend, but it is a crucial clash for the clubs involved.

Even though we are only in the third round of top-flight matches, this particular encounter is telling as both Watford and Palace are likely to be fighting at the same level this season.

The Hornets have started the season well having earned a 2-0 victory over Brighton on the opening weekend and a 3-1 triumph over Burnley in their last outing.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”280645″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Dodgy De Gea & Arsenal’s MiniRevolution”]

For Palace, there has been a mixed bag as Roy Hodgson’s team kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 win over promoted side Fulham.

The Eagles battled against Liverpool in their next fixture, but in the end they were beaten 2-0 at Selhurst Park.

Ahead of Sunday’s match, a rivalry seems to be brewing between Hodgson and Watford’s mascot ‘Harry the Hornet’.

While speaking to the media, the Palace boss described the mascot as “disgraceful” for diving in front of Wilfried Zaha during a match in 2016.

On Reddit, some Watford supporters have posted their match predictions.

Liverpool need Fabinho in the team more than ever

Liverpool extended their unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a narrow victory against Leicester.

Jurgen Klopp dropped Naby Keita for the trip to the King Power with captain Jordan Henderson taking his place in the midfield three. The Reds got off to the best possible start when Sadio Mane netted his fourth goal of the season, and Roberto Firmino headed home from a corner. An error from Alisson allowed Rachid Ghezzal to score, but Liverpool managed to hang on for all three points.

Despite four wins from four games, Liverpool look nothing like the side they were last season. Their attackers have struggled to find a rhythm thus far while the performance of Henderson was also concerning. The skipper won just two out of five tackles and failed to keep James Maddison quiet. His dreadful pass to Virgil van Dijk led to another poor ball back to the ‘keeper which resulted in Liverpool conceding their first goal of the season.

His performance proved that Liverpool need to get £40m signing Fabinho into the side as quick as possible. The Brazilian was on the bench for the opening day of the season against West Ham but has failed to make the matchday squad since. Jurgen Klopp admitted it would take a while for the midfielder to adapt to life in England and his presence was sorely missed against the Foxes.

The 24-year-old averaged 3.3 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game for Monaco last season (WhoScored), and Liverpool needed his defensive abilities after conceding. When Henderson departed, Liverpool regained control of the game and Fabinho is the perfect player to dictate the tempo as well as protecting the defence.

The sooner Klopp can get him in the team, the better.

Tottenham fans regret not swapping Rose for Shaw

Loads of Tottenham fans have been sharing their thoughts on England’s defeat to Spain, and they’re wishing they had swapped Danny Rose for Luke Shaw in the summer.

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans were adamant they must keep Rose when rumours emerged of a possible swap deal with Manchester United this summer, but they’re changing their minds after Shaw’s incredible assist vs Spain.

The 23 year-old slid a wonderful pass behind the Spain defence to set up Marcus Rashford, adding to the goal and assist he has already racked up for the Red Devils this season.

Unfortunately for Shaw, the young left back suffered a worrying injury in the second half after a clash with Dani Carvajal, though the extent of the injury is not yet known.

Mauricio Pochettino has a knack of developing young players, and Spurs fans are regretting not letting the boss work his magic on Shaw.

Revealed: 36% of these Manchester United fans consider Fellaini a massive flop signing

Marouane Fellaini joined Manchester United on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2013, reuniting with former Everton boss David Moyes at Old Trafford in the process. Moyes didn’t last the season, but five years on and the 6’4” Belgian remains a Red Devil.

Over the years, the midfielder has proved a useful squad member and has become a particular favourite of current boss Jose Mourinho. Earlier this summer, Fellaini signed a new contract with the club that will keep him in Manchester until 2020.

[ad_pod ]

The 30-year-old’s status in the squad even appears to be growing. Having spent much of his United career to date as a bench option, this season Fellaini has started two of the five Premier League games played so far.

Despite all this though, a surprisingly high 36% of the United fans we polled consider Fellaini to be a massive flop, indicative of the decline in standards at the club that has taken place since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. See the full results below.
