Celtic and Rangers fans react to Bobby Madden appointment

We’re rapidly approaching another high stakes match-up between Celtic and Rangers with the two teams set to go to battle on Sunday at Celtic Park.

With the Hoops holding the upper hand in contests between the two clubs so far this season, the Gers have never been more keen to gain a victory.

Brendan Rodgers team are seemingly unstoppable though having not lost a domestic match all season, winning every single one since September. It’s been an incredible run but you know what they say about derbies like this, form doesn’t matter.

Perhaps the only certainty heading into Sunday’s game is that the referee will be at the heart of the action. Often contested with, shall we say, ‘robust’ challenges in front of one of the most passionate crowds around, the derby is surely one of the toughest to call in world football.

As reported by STV, the man tasked with controlling the 22 players this weekend is Bobby Madden, taking charge of his first clash between the two sides this season.

Scottish refereeing isn’t held in the highest regard by supporters, least of all Celtic fans, so news such as this often gets tongues wagging.

Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the appointment…

Advantage Man City? Marriner appointment may be bad news for Arsenal

While Saturday’s Merseyside Derby may be seen as the game of the weekend by many, Arsenal hosting Manchester City on Sunday afternoon has the potential to be the match of gameweek 30. With top four ambitions having replaced title charges in both camps, neither can afford to slip up at the Emirates Stadium, especially the hosts, who have fallen to sixth in the Premier League.

So Andre Marriner’s appointment is sure to have been one that’s worried Arsene Wenger, with the 46-year-old’s 38.1% away win record this season the third-highest across the division…

A home victory percentage of 42.9 does hint that there remains a good chance the Gunners will get over the line, while even a 19% chance of a draw will appeal to some north Londoners given the club’s recent slide.

Interestingly, Marriner’s 20.3 fouls given-per-game is the lowest of any official in the division this season, suggesting the game will be allowed to flow, while 78 yellow cards and just one red hint that the match will be managed without much fuss.

In Focus: Keane return costly for United, but a price worth paying

As reported by The Daily Mail, Manchester United are planning on bolstering their defensive options with a move for former player and currently Burnley star Michael Keane.

What’s the story?

Keane played just five matches for the Red Devils before permanently moving to Burnley in 2015 following a loan spell, but now he could be set for a sensational return to Old Trafford.

That’s what The Mail reckon anyway, and they say United are so intent on securing their man that they’re willing to pay a massive 10 times the amount he initially left for.

According to the paper Keane joined Burnley for a fee of £2.5m, a fraction of the £25m it could take to bring him back to the club where he started his career.

However, with Liverpool and Chelsea reportedly also monitoring his situation, it may not be so easy to land their man.

Worth it?

Manchester United are of course no strangers to shelling out for former youth prospects having paid mega-money for former academy player Paul Pogba last year.

While the money talked about with regards to Michael Keane is nowhere near that level, it’s still not a good look to so regularly back pedal on players you initially had on your books.

Having recently made his England debut, Keane’s stock has never been higher and at the age of just 24 has plenty of time left to become an icon at Old Trafford.

In that respect the reported £25m isn’t too large a fee, especially as he has shown impressive consistency in the Premier League for Burnley. He’s made over 100 appearances for the club and has been one of their top performers this season.

Finally putting their faith in the Englishman could pay off big for Jose Mourinho, despite the large fee.

Man United fans on Twitter hope Wayne Rooney follows John Terry’s lead

Not long after Manchester United toppled Chelsea at Old Trafford, Blues legend John Terry announced he would be leaving his beloved boyhood charges this summer.

While this may not be the end of Terry’s illustrious playing career, his departure from Stamford Bridge sees the final member of Jose Mourinho’s old guard in SW6 call time on life at the club.

Like him or loathe him, his leaving was likely to provoke reaction from fans all over the Premier League, considering the magnitude of his importance to England’s top division over the years.

Interestingly enough, the reaction of the United fans on Twitter has largely centred around former England teammate Wayne Rooney. Like Terry, the latter is one of the last members of the Three Lions’ ill-fated ‘Golden Generation’ playing today, though his career with the Red Devils looks to be over.

With Terry having set a precedent, United fans online have taken to Twitter to urge Rooney to do the very same.

Aston Villa fans want Sam Johnstone back, but only for the right price

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that he has spoken to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho about the prospect of bringing goalkeeper Sam Johnstone to the club permanently.

The Red Devils allowed the 24-year-old stopper to move to the Championship outfit on loan until the end of the season in January, and now Bruce is keen to bring him to the Midlands on a permanent basis after he impressed between the sticks.

Johnstone only extended his contract for another two years with United in October, suggesting that Mourinho believes he has a future at Old Trafford.

It could mean that Villa will have to pay a sizeable fee if they are to convince the Portuguese boss to sell this summer.

Aston Villa were quick to give their thoughts on their Bruce’s comments via social media and while they are keen for Johnstone to come back, others believe that he isn’t worth more than £5m.

Newcastle fans react to shock Brighton defeat

Brighton & Hove Albion suffered a shock defeat at home to Bristol City on Saturday, throwing the race to win the Championship wide open. Their neck and neck race with Newcastle United will go down to the last day of the season.

It was a Josh Brownhill effort which provided the win for Bristol, with Chris Hughton’s men unable to find a reply.  The result followed a Magpies win away to Cardiff City on Friday, meaning Rafa Benitez’s side are now just a point behind the Seagulls.

With the margins so close, you’d give Newcastle a very good chance of finishing top of the tree come the final whistle next week. They’re at home to Barnsley while Brighton have a tricky trip away to Aston Villa.

Brighton have now lost two games on the spin and after having had such a good few months, their dreams the division win may be coming off the rails.

Of course, both teams have been automatically promoted, but the bragging rights and momentum finishing first would bring could be vital heading into the summer.

Newcastle fans were loving the result and took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Everton fans think Barkley is staying after he features in new kit reveal

Evertonrevealed the club’s new 2017/18 Umbro home shirt on Tuesday night, and there was a slightly surprising prominent role for midfielder Ross Barkley.

The Toffees star is continuing to be linked with a move away from Goodison Park after so far failing to extend his current contract which runs out next summer, with manager Ronald Koeman stating last week that he has until the end of this week to decide whether he is going to sign a new deal or not.

If he doesn’t the Merseyside outfit will sell him at the end of the season, but according to reports in The Telegraph on Wednesday they will demand a £50m fee if they are to sell the England international.

Everton supporters were quick to have their say on the images and video via social media, with many believing it would be strange to include him in a ‘TogetherBlue’ campaign if they knew he was leaving.

Spurs are missing a trick selling Birthday boy Walker for his best years

Amid an era in which transfer rumours have become the page-view-churning, money-making bread and butter for the British sporting press, and in the of a time of year when the imaginations of supporters can be easily captured as they look ahead to 2017/18, Kyle Walker’s nine-post Instagram message has been interpreted in the extremist terms possible.

Of course, the England international could simply be thanking Tottenham fans for the support they’ve shown him this season, which has produced arguably the best form of his career.

But placed in the context of understudy Kieran Trippier starting four of Spurs’ last five Premier League fixtures, not to mention the FA Cup semi-final, Manchester City releasing two of their right-backs and Mirror Football not only linking Walker with the Citizens and Premier League champions Chelsea but further claiming the Lilywhites are looking to sell at £40million, the right-back’s latest social media venture inevitably points towards a departure.

The allegation that Spurs are prepared to cash in certainly makes interesting reading and according to our recent poll, a significant section of supporters would back that decision. Indeed, although Walker claimed a place in the PFA Team of the Season and has been up there with the best attacking full-backs in Europe over the last two campaigns, some of the White Hart Lane faithful have never quite warmed to him.

Whereas others see a penetrative, adventurous Dani Alves-esque menace overlapping down the right-hand side, a significant section of Spurs fans are more focused on Walker’s inconsistent final ball and questionable quality at the other end of the pitch, a recurring source of frustration. The fact Trippier has shown himself more than capable of filling the void when given chances in small doses since his arrival from Burnley in summer 2015 has only added weight to the argument that the north London club can afford to sell.

No doubt, Walker has his flaws. He still relies on burning pace to compensate for questionable positioning, often committing fouls to get himself out of trouble, and his quality on the ball varies over a disturbingly wide spectrum. One game, he can provide the verve and delivery of a top-quality winger; the next, he’s heavy-footed, cumbersome and his crosses can’t beat the first man. He’s actually produced the same number of accurate crosses as Crystal Palace’s Joel Ward this term, hardly a stellar talent on the ball, and just one more than West Brom’s centre-half-thrust-in-at-No.2, Craig Dawson.

Yet, many of those defensive failings are imposed upon Walker by the role he plays, as a member of the flying full-back breed that has taken world football by storm over the last few seasons. He’s encouraged to push up, to the extent he’s often wider and further forward than his according attacking midfielder, and thus gaps inevitably open on the counter – obliging him to stop anyone galloping into the space he’s left behind by hook or by crook. In many ways, it’s impressive he actually has the legs to get back and make any kind of challenge.

Likewise, although his end product may often leave Spurs fans infuriated, Walker’s attacking contributions have been up there with the very best in Europe this season, ranking in the top ten right-backs and right wing-backs for assists, key passes, successful dribbles and passes across Europe’s five leading top flights. Likewise, comparatively, his number of unsuccessful touches is relatively insignificant for a player who so regularly receives the ball and so often attempts to do something positive with it.

If Spurs fans want another attacking right-back to replace Walker, they’ll be hard-pressed to find one equally as talented available this summer. Suddenly, it’s all shaping up to be a case of the grass not always being greener, but more than simply Spurs deciding to cash in on a player who has received arguably undue criticism, offloading to a divisional rival could prove to be horrendously short-sighted.

After all, Walker is nothing not a by-product of the direction modern football has taken full-backs in recent years and at this point, they’ve become amongst the most important players on the pitch – often defining their team’s philosophies through their own style and balance between defence and attack.

It’s no coincidence the second-best team in the Premier League this season had the best full-backs and the best understudy full-backs, whilst the wing-backs of the reigning champions contributed to 14 league goals. In contrast, Manchester City fell short in the title race with their ageing clan, Liverpool could only just about cling onto fourth with a midfielder at No.3 and Manchester United, who used five different players at left-back throughout their league campaign, ended up in sixth. Top quality full-backs or wing-backs are more vital than they’ve ever been, yet Spurs are potentially about to hand one to a title rival.

Perhaps more significantly, Tottenham are passing Walker on at the age of 27, celebrating his birthday today. That’s premium years for any footballer, especially those who depend on stamina as much as Walker, and verging upon absolute peak years for a defender. As much as Walker may frustrate Spurs fans defensively, logic suggests experience will see those mistakes naturally disappear over the course of the next few seasons.

So Spurs are not only axing one of the best right-backs in Europe, not only reducing their quality in one of the most important positions of the modern game, not only seemingly selling to a divisional rival, but are also doing so ahead of what should be the best years of Walker’s career.

Why put up with all that inconsistency during Walker’s development, only to surrender him once he’s finally matured into a top-class talent in his position? It just doesn’t make sense and over the course of the next few seasons, as the competition at the top of the Premier League only further increases, it could come back to really hurt Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Tottenham fans react as club decides against bringing N’Jie back

According to reports in L’Equipe, via Get French Football News, Tottenham Hotspur have decided against activating a clause that would have allowed them to bring Clinton N’Jie back to the club this summer.

Spurs signed the forward for around £8.3m on a five-year deal from Lyon in August 2015 but after struggling to impress in his debut season in the Premier League – making 14 appearances in all competitions and failing to find the net – the Cameroon international was shipped out on a season-long loan deal to Marseille last summer.

The move included a clause for the Ligue 1 giants to buy him permanently but also allowed Mauricio Pochettino to bring him back to north London if he impressed this term, but the Argentine has reportedly decided against it and N’Jie looks set to stay in the south of France.

Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the story via social media. Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

In Focus: Rangers not ready to sell Tavernier on the cheap

As reported by The Scotsman, Rangers have rejected an advance from Nottingham Forest for their star right-back James Tavernier.

What’s the story?

The story of Ranger’s summer transfer wise has been all about bringing players into the club with Pedro Caixinha making a raft of signings from Scotland, Portugal and Mexico so far.

However, the likelihood is that plenty will be shown the door at Ibrox this summer too.

One of those players whose future is in doubt is James Tavernier. The Scotsman say that former boss Mark Warburton wants to bring the defender to Nottingham Forest, even lodging a formal offer with the Light Blues.

However, Rangers aren’t willing to say goodbye to the player on the cheap and have rejected Warburton’s initial advance, according the report. The paper does go on to say that a second bid is expected.

Should Pedro Caixinha let him go?

Time to leave?

James Tavernier had a fantastic first season for Rangers but that came in the Scottish Championship and he’s found it difficult it adjust to top-flight football over the last 12 months.

There’s no doubt about his ability to get himself forward at Scottish Premiership level but his defensive positioning is hugely lacking and he left his teammates high and dry more than a few times last season.

If Pedro Caixinha has other options in mind in the position then there’s little point in having him hang around and it seems a matter of when, not if, he leaves the Ibrox club this summer.
