'Why cannot it be March?' – Rohit questions WTC final scheduling and venue

India captain also added his voice to calls for the final to be played as a best-of-three series

What’s ailing India’s batters?

After a second successive loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, India captain Rohit Sharma has said future finals should be played outside England, and not necessarily be scheduled for June.Asked whether a WTC final will always be trickier to handle because it takes place after the IPL, Rohit said it didn’t have to be that way.”Why after the IPL final? Why cannot it be March? June is not the only month we should play the final,” Rohit said. “It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world, not just in England, it can be played anywhere in the world.”Rohit was speaking after his side lost the final at The Oval to Australia by 209 runs. Two years ago, in June 2021, they were beaten by New Zealand by eight wickets in a rain-hit final played at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. The 2025 final is also scheduled to be played at Lord’s.Related

Kohli calls for best-of-three finals to decide future WTC winners

Warner on the WTC final: 'It should be at least a three-game series'

India had little time to acclimatise in England this time round, having arrived straight off the IPL – and in talking about his bowlers, Rohit spoke specifically of needing greater time to prepare, to transition from T20 to Test cricket. In 2021 they arrived earlier and fresher, but only because the IPL that year was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, stopping in early May before resuming in the UAE in September.Rohit even linked the kind of team that he would like to build for the next cycle at least in part to where the final might be played. Responding to an earlier question, he said, “I want to see where the next WTC final is being played as well. That depends where we play, based on that we will decide what sort of players we want to get ready and what kind of cricket we want to play.”Rohit Sharma also added his voice to calls for the final to be played as a best-of-three series•Getty Images

The question of where and when the WTC final is held if not England is, of course, trickier in a calendar that is stretched to breaking point at the moment. The addition of three new domestic T20 leagues in the UAE, South Africa and – next month – in the US means international cricket is facing a squeeze like never before.A move away from June would require not only finding another window, but also, potentially, a rejig of the international cycle as agreed upon in the Future Tours Programme (FTP) last year. The next eight-year cycle of international cricket sees four WTC finals, in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031. The venues for the finals – barring the 2025 WTC final – have not been decided yet and though England is not locked in as a venue, it has thus far been seen among full members and the ICC as a natural choice of location. The northern hemisphere summer offers an ideal endpoint to a two-year cycle and in England there is the guarantee of strong crowds.”The way the cycle is set up we are always going to be playing it in the northern hemisphere summer,” ICC’s general manager Wasim Khan had said, speaking before the final.”Southampton initially, then we looked at everything from making sure we provide diverse venues as it stands within England. Lord’s was considered but the decision was made on The Oval for this. In terms of where they get played, in terms of the final right now, the UK suits the set-up of the tournament itself. It falls in line with northern hemisphere.”Rohit also added his voice to calls for the final to be played as a best-of-three series, echoing the view of Virat Kohli, the defeated India captain in the last final as well, more recently, as David Warner.”I would love that [a three-match final],” Rohit said. “But is there a time? That’s the big question. Honestly, in a big event like this you need to have fair opportunities for both the teams.”A three-match series would be nice but it’s about finding that window, where it can fit in. An event like this you work hard for two years and then you only have one shot at it. It’s not really – you cannot get into that momentum that you need in Test cricket. Test cricket is all about finding that rhythm, finding that momentum as well. I think yeah, if in the next cycle if it is possible, three-match series would be ideal.”Unsurprisingly, the winning captain was happy with the concept as it stands.”I think it’s fine,” Pat Cummins said. “No qualms. I think ideally you’d have 50-match series but the Olympics have come down to one race to win a gold medal. AFL, NRL seasons have finals. That’s sport.”

West Indies steady after Kohli's first away Test ton in five years

Jadeja and Ashwin also scored fifties to take India past 400

Deivarayan Muthu21-Jul-20231:17

Dasgupta: Kohli wants to prove certain things to himself

Virat Kohli made his first away Test century in almost five years, and Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin helped themselves to half-centuries, as India piled up 438 in Port-of-Spain. In reply, West Indies started slowly but solidly, with captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul responsible for the hosts’ first half-century partnership in the series. But Jadeja struck 20 minutes before stumps to have Chanderpaul carving a catch to Ashwin. Brathwaite and debutant Kirk McKenzie, who is playing only his tenth first-class game, then safely negotiated a tricky passage of play, with West Indies still 352 runs behind.Earlier, Kohli looked like converting his hundred into a big one until Alzarri Joseph’s athletic intervention ran him out for 121. Jadeja looked set for a hundred of his own, but Kemar Roach removed him for 61. Both overnight batters fell in a space of six overs, but Ashwin marshalled the tail and pushed India towards 450.Related

A Kohli hundred that felt like a new beginning

Jadeja dismissal: right decision made despite DRS 'glitch'

The Queen’s Park Oval pitch – and the outfield – had slowed down even further on day two but that didn’t prevent Kohli from pinging the boundary with his punchy drives. One of those drives, which was crunched behind point off Shannon Gabriel, brought Kohli his 76th hundred in his 500th international match. Three balls later, Jadeja reached his fifty and celebrated it with his signature sword dance.Another Kohli drive, this time off Jason Holder in the 92nd over, was among the contenders for the shot of the match. When Holder served up a half-volley on the stumps, Kohli had originally shaped to flick it away through midwicket, but he ended up half-flicking and half-driving it past mid-off with great authority. There was another drive that he drilled so straight that it knocked out the middle stump at the non-striker’s end.R Ashwin plays a ramp shot on his way to a half-century•AFP/Getty Images

Jadeja was more circumspect, but he combined well with Kohli to steal singles and doubles from right under the noses of the West Indian fielders. However, the 159-run fifth-wicket stand ended when an uncharacteristic moment of hesitation between the wickets resulted in Kohli getting run out. Joseph swooped on the ball from square leg and capitalised on the chance. Soon after, Roach dangled out a wide ball and had Jadeja edging a drive behind.Jadeja was originally given not out by the on-field umpire, but West Indies overturned the decision on review. The replay that came up, however, for the TV umpire was of a different ball. During the tea analysis show, the broadcast commentators clarified that the correct decision was made despite the “glitch”.Kishan, who had spent 19 balls on zero on Test debut in Dominica, started with more attacking intent in Port-of-Spain, advancing at left-arm fingerspinner Jomel Warrican and flaying the ball past him for four. After lunch, Kishan got a life when McKenzie dropped him after mistiming his jump at short midwicket. That error cost West Indies only four runs as Holder had Kishan wafting behind the very next ball for 25.Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul added 71 for the first wicket•AFP/Getty Images

After Ashwin had bedded in with back-to-back drives off Gabriel, West Indies’ quicks peppered him with short balls. But Ashwin used the bounce to his advantage and created scoring opportunities. When Roach kept banging it short – but not short enough – outside off, Ashwin leant back and ramped him over slip for a pair of fours. He then brought up his fifty with a slapped four off a similar short ball from Roach. With No. 11 Mukesh Kumar for company, Ashwin backed away and tried to rustle up more boundaries, but Roach knocked him over with his slower variation. Roach and Warrican finished with three wickets each before West Indies’ openers settled in.Chanderpaul, in particular, had to grind for his runs in the early exchanges. He took 58 balls to score his first boundary and move into double figures. When Ashwin erred down the leg side, Chanderpaul put him away with the sweep. He then countered Mohammed Siraj’s bouncers with the hook. Both Chanderpaul and Brathwaite were happy to leave anything wide of off stump on a track that didn’t offer much assistance to seamers or spinners. Brathwaite had glanced Siraj and whipped Jadeja for fours but wasn’t as assured against Ashwin who got one to drift past his outside edge from over the wicket. It was Jadeja who produced the breakthrough in the 35th over. After bowling 36 balls on the trot to Brathwaite, Jadeja had a crack at Chanderpaul and with his second ball to the left-hander, he drew a thick edge that looped to backward point. McKenzie announced himself in Test cricket with a six down the ground off Ashwin and then caressed Jadeja through extra cover for four to help West Indies end the day in a confident manner.

Grand old Duke of York clinches one-wicket win with nerveless 93*

Together with No. 11 Dominic Leech, young keeper digs deep for Yorkshire’s second win of the One-Day Cup

Last-wicket pair Harry Duke and Dom Leech achieved the 32 runs required as Yorkshire claimed a thrilling one-wicket win over Surrey at York to boost their hopes of knockout qualification in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.Chasing 242, Duke, who narrowly missed out on a deserved century with 93 not out off 132 balls, saw wickets fall at the other end as the Vikings slipped from 141 for 3 to 210 for 9.But the wicketkeeper-batter held his nerve with the help of new-ball seamer Leech, who finished 18 not out and hit the winning boundary off Ryan Patel’s medium pace with nine balls remaining.Leg-spinning allrounder Cameron Steel claimed 3 for 49 for Surrey to underpin the Yorkshire collapse. Surrey fought hard to engineer a fantastic finish, both with bat and then ball given they were also nought for two having been inserted.Surrey were depleted by unavailability and injury and were only able to field two frontline seamers in Conor McKerr and Luke Griffiths added to three spinners at Clifton Park. Ben Geddes hit an excellent List A career-best 92 off 90 balls to recover Surrey to 241 all out inside 48 overs batting first.Ben Geddes hit a List A-best 92•Getty Images

Yorkshire won for the second time in five group games to put them on course for a top-three finish and knockout cricket with three games remaining. Surrey, missing 12 players because of the Hundreds added to further injury issues, lost their second game in five and have it all to do to qualify.Ben Mike claimed a career-best 4 for 40 from 7.5 overs for Yorkshire, who struck twice in the second over of a Clifton Park contest played in front of a 3,000-strong crowd. Leech struck twice with the new ball in his first over, getting Surrey opener Patel caught at point off a leading edge and Rory Burns caught at second slip on the drive.Matthew Revis then struck with his first ball as Surrey slipped to 79 for five in the 21st over, with skittish opener Dom Sibley caught at mid-on off a top edge for 30. Ben Foakes took treatment for a twisted ankle before being trapped lbw by George Hill, and he later did not take the wicketkeeping gloves.Thankfully for Surrey, it was his fellow Ben, Geddes, who steered their recovery. Geddes, 22, shared 45 for the sixth wicket with Josh Blake, who made 25 and took the wicketkeeping gloves, and then 94 for the seventh wicket with McKerr, who added a career best 32 from 124 for six in the 31st over.Yorkshire went short at Geddes for a time, but he pulled three sixes added to 10 fours, including one into the adjoining gardens over midwicket at the City End of this sun-kissed venue.Geddes was later bowled by Mike, who also had McKerr the same way. The former Leicestershire quick claimed all four of his wickets inside the final seven overs of the innings as Yorkshire limited the fightback in front of a 3,000-strong crowd. The Vikings then reached 80 for 3 after 12 overs of their reply, losing opener Fin Bean bowled by McKerr on his home ground and captain Shan Masood the same way by offspinner Amar Virdi. George Hill later followed caught behind off Griffiths for 30.Virdi was one of three spinners in Surrey’s bowling attack. McKerr even left the field briefly at one stage to tend to a hand injury. Duke kept Yorkshire ahead with a busy half-century, reached off 59 balls. At that point, the hosts were cruising at 138 for three in the 23rd over. However, the game was about to change.Duke and Will Fraine (32) had shared 61 for the fourth wicket, but the latter’s departure was the first of four wickets to fall for 22 runs – two to Steel’s leg-spin and two stumped by deputy keeper Blake – as the score fell to 163 for seven in the 31st over.Steel had Mike stumped, Revis caught and bowled and, as the score later fell to 197 for eight in the 35th over, Dom Bess caught at deep midwicket on the slog sweep. From there, Duke and Leech chipped away at the runs in calm and composed manner, with the latter pulling Patel away to delight the 3,000-strong crowd.

Essex collapse after 103-run powerplay before Masood, Wharton guide Yorkshire home

Dom Bess and Matthew Revis produced career-best List A bowling figures to spark an Essex batting collapse and set up Yorkshire Vikings’ first Metro Bank One-Day Cup win of the season.Bess claimed 5 for 37 as Essex subsided from 103 for 0 – underpinned by Michael Pepper’s swashbuckling personal-best 63 from 34 balls – to 221 all out in 36 overs. Revis had earlier sliced through the Essex upper order with 4 for 54.The Vikings reached their target with 25 balls remaining, barely breaking sweat and only five wickets down. Shan Masood, their Pakistani white-ball captain, led the way with a patient 54 from 66 balls, with James Wharton seeing them over the line with an unbeaten 54 from 49 balls.Yorkshire had seen two of their previous three games in the competition abandoned without a ball bowled, and the other lost to Kent by just two runs under DLS. But they bounced back on the same wicket that Essex had won a thriller under the Chelmsford floodlights against Middlesex on Friday.Pepper’s whirlwind innings encompassed the entire powerplay before he fell to the last ball of the 10th over, skying Bess to cover. The wicket had come at a cost to Yorkshire, though, as Pepper had just gone through his repertoire off the previous three balls, sweeping, lofting over midwicket and reverse-sweeping for boundaries. In all, Pepper scored 58 of his 63 runs in boundaries, three of them clearing the ropes without bouncing, two of them in an over from Ben Coad that went for 22 as Essex rattled up three figures inside 10 overs. Das contributed 32 in the opening stand of 103 and tucked into Bess with three fours in a row during a run-a-ball 36.Michael Pepper was released by London Spirit for Essex duty•Getty Images

Tom Westley maintained the tempo in a brisk 17 before he chased a wide delivery from Revis and was caught behind. Three balls later Das drove straight back to the bowler. Luc Benkenstein put on 50 in six overs with Beau Webster, both of them hammering two sixes each as Essex continued to score at around eight an over. But that charge was stifled, starting when Revis claimed his third and fourth wickets in just six balls with Benkenstein clubbing to mid-on and Simon Harmer chipping to short midwicket.Jack Shutt had Charlie Allison lbw sweeping before Bess took centre stage with the final four wickets, three of them falling in six balls as Essex left 14 overs unused, He had Webster caught behind attempting to cut, Jamal Richards patting back a return catch, Will Buttleman beaten by one that kept low and Aron Nijjar playing on.In comparison, Yorkshire’s openers were more circumspect and had just 46 on the board at the end of the powerplay, less than half of Essex’s 10-over total. The pair were together for exactly an hour, having knocked off 80 from the target, before Bean was caught in two minds against Webster’s offspin and the ball was past him before he jerked his bat down.Fellow opener Duke reverse-swept Harmer for the first of four fours in his patient 42 before he was bowled attempting to scoop Nijjar. The spinner then had George Hill snaffled at short midwicket before Harmer dived full-length to his left to take a return catch and dismiss Will Fraine. The Vikings had become becalmed in mid-innings without a boundary for almost 10 overs before Masood added to his earlier six over long leg with successive fours off Nijjar. He put on 68 in 11 overs with Wharton to take Yorkshire within 42 of victory, but was strangled down the leg-side by Westley with Buttleman taking the catch.Wharton took Yorkshire within sight of the target with two sixes in an over from Webster, the second over midwicket to reach his first white-ball fifty from 47 balls.
