Despite a fighting effort from Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, they suffered a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Fulham. It was a game in which the Old Gold dominated, but could not get over the line against a Cottagers side fighting for Europe.
Vitor Pereira’s side went 1-0 down just one minute into the game. It was a brilliant piece of play from Fulham, who, within a few passes, were in the Wolves penalty box, with Ryan Sessegnon slotting home past Jose Sa. It was far from ideal defending from Wolves, who gifted the Englishman acres of space on the left.
However, the West Midlands outfit hit back with almost 18 minutes on the clock. It was a sublime finish from midfielder Joao Gomes from which they equalised, thrashing home a volley into the roof of the net.
Wolves started the second half much like they did the first, by conceding a goal. This time it was two minutes after kick-off, with Rodrigo Muniz making a run in behind the defence and dinking a finish over the onrushing Sa.
Pereira’s side never managed to get themselves back in the game and ended up as the losing side. However, there were some standout performers, particularly Matheus Cunha and Gomes.
Wolves' best players against Fulham
Wolves’ Brazilian duo are simply vital players at Molineux. Although they were defeated against Fulham, the two still stood out. He did not get a goal or assist on Tuesday night, but Cunha was certainly excellent against the Cottagers.
One of the most impressive things was his influence off the ball. As per Sofascore, the 25-year-old won an exceptional nine out of 14 ground duels, whilst still creating one chance and completing two out of three dribbles.
As for Gomes, he put in a great showing in a more advanced midfield role aside from his goal. The midfielder’s sensational strike, which left Bernd Leno with no chance of saving it, was the highlight of his night, but he was also a creative influence.
This was noted by Charlie Haffenden, journalist for Birmingham World. He gave the Brazilian an 8/10 for his performance, explaining that he ‘created one good opportunity’ for his fellow attacking midfielder Cunha.
Despite the loss, there were certainly positives to take from the clash against Marco Silva’s side. However, a few players did struggle, including one man who was utilised out of position.

The Wolves star who struggled against Fulham
It was a tough night at the office for January arrival Marshall Munetsi, who played as a centre-forward on Tuesday evening, despite Jorgen Stand Larsen being available and on the bench.
However, it’s safe to say that the experiment for Munetsi to lead the line did not quite work.
The Zimbabwean, who is a midfielder by trade, was rather isolated against the Cottagers. Although he was a presence in the opposition penalty box, the 28-year-old did not make much of an impact, and perhaps could have made a better contribution in the midfield role he is more used to playing.
The stats certainly demonstrate just how well the former Reims star struggled. Despite playing the entire game, he had just 24 touches, fewer than Old Gold goalkeeper Sa. He also won three from six duels and did not manage a shot on target, out of two efforts.

Haffenden pointed out one of the issues Munetsi had against the West Londoners. The journalist explained he ‘was unable to make much stick in the final third’ despite being ‘heavily involved’ at both ends of the pitch.
It was a tough night for the Old Gold, with the experiment starting Munetsi as a centre-forward instead of Larsen ultimately not paying off. It has certainly given Pereira something to think about ahead of their next fixture, an FA Cup clash against Bournemouth.

Nic Maddinson’s suspected serious knee injury has compounded Melbourne Renegades’ woes after they suffered a fourth consecutive BBL defeat. Renegades copped a five-wicket loss to the red-hot Perth Scorchers at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, continuing their slide after a positive 3-0 start to the season.Aaron Finch’s 65 off 48 had given the home side a sniff, steering them to 155 for 6 from their 20 overs, with Scorchers quick AJ Tye taking 3 for 32 to restrict the hosts. But Josh Inglis and Cameron Bancroft got Scorchers over the line in a controlled chase.Scorchers reached the target with two balls to spare, despite the efforts of Renegades quick Kane Richardson. It was Scorchers’ fourth straight win, firming up their spot at the top of the table.Maddinson’s slump continued when he was out for a first-ball duck, giving him a total of just three runs in his last five innings. His day got worse when he injured his knee while fielding during the second over of Scorchers’ chase, twisting his left leg as he turned to throw the ball.The 31-year-old immediately slumped to the turf and was assessed for several minutes before being driven off the field. Import opener Faf du Plessis and Bancroft gave Scorchers a solid platform in their chase.Richardson was on a hat-trick when he removed Adam Lyth with the last ball of one over and du Plessis with the first of another, but he could not complete the feat.Bancroft was brilliantly run out by Will Sutherland, but Inglis took the reins and put his side on the brink of victory.There was late drama when Inglis unsuccessfully reviewed an lbw decision and was given out before Nick Hobson hit the winning run off Sutherland.Earlier, Finch became the second player to reach 3000 career runs in the BBL, joining all-time leading scorer Chris Lynn. West Bromwich Albion maintained their place in the top six of the Championship with a 1-1 draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.
The Baggies are fifth in the division, level on points with Coventry in sixth, and are two points ahead of Bristol City in seventh place, with nine games left to play.
Tony Mowbray’s side took the lead through John Swift but it only took three minutes for the hosts to equalise, as Joe Wildsmith inexplicably dropped the ball in front of Zian Flemming for a tap-in.
It was a well-earned point for the Baggies, whose hosts were given a red card at the final whistle for a cynical trip by CJ Egan-Riley, and that was down to several individual performances – including Swift’s.

His free-kick to open the scoring in the 20th minute was a thing of beauty, as he found the top corner with a strike that left the exceptional James Trafford unable to even react.
Swift also provided a reliable outlet in possession for West Brom, completing 90% of his attempted passes on the night, but was not particularly influential off the ball, winning one tackle and being dribbled past once.
Despite opening the scoring and being efficient with his passes, the 29-year-old maestro was not the best player on the pitch for the Baggies. That acclaim belongs to central defender Torbjorn Heggem.
Torbjorn Heggem's best game for West Brom
The Norwegian central defender enjoyed his best evening in a West Brom shirt on Tuesday night against the Clarets with an exceptional defensive effort to help his team to secure a point at Turf Moor.
Heggem has started all 37 of the club’s matches in the Championship this season and provided a consistent presence at the back for the Baggies, winning 66% of his duels in those games.
The 27-year-old colossus put in his best showing of those 37 appearances against Burnley, though, as he excelled in and out of possession all night.
There was little he could have done to prevent the only goal that West Brom conceded, as his goalkeeper let the team down with his mistake, but he did his best to ensure that the hosts did not find the back of the net multiple times.

As you can see in the table above, Heggem completed an even higher percentage of his passes than Swift did, without being dribbled past a single time and winning all of his physical duels.
It was the first time this season that the Norwegian titan made more than nine clearances in a Championship game and the first time that he made nine or more clearances whilst also winning 100% of his duels.
This shows that the West Brom star was consistently in the right place at the right time to make vital interventions to prevent Burnley from creating more chances to trouble Wildsmith.

A total of five match-winners stepped up for Australia in their opening match of the T20 World Cup, as the defending champions began their pursuit of a sixth T20 title with a 97-run demolition job of Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand.The tone in Australia’s victory was set by their captain Meg Lanning, with her 33-ball 41 allowing Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy to build through the middle overs. Perry smacked 40 in 22 balls, Healy hit 55 in 38 deliveries and Australia handed New Zealand 174 to chase.But New Zealand had the worst possible start when Megan Schutt took two big wickets in the first over of the chase. New Zealand could never recover from thereon, and Ashleigh Gardner feasted on their misery to run through their tail. She finished with a five-wicket haul and her career-best T20I figures while Sophie Devine’s side return to the drawing board following the heavy defeat.Australia’s big three step upHealy and Lanning linked up when Australia were in a spot of bother. Opener Beth Mooney was out for a duck to a terrific diving catch from Eden Carson, and Lea Tahuhu was getting the new ball to swing. Two balls later, Schutt got a length ball from wide of the crease to angle in, and Devine’s missed flick meant she was out for zero first ball as well.Schutt could have had a third wicket in her second over when Bernadine Bezuidenhout was caught in front of the stumps to a ball angling in from a good length, but the batter survived on a tight “umpire’s call” decision.Bezuidenhout would go on to pull, reverse sweep and slog three boundaries in quick succession. Playing her first game since 2020 and on a comeback trail after two years out of the game to recover from a health issue, Bezuidenhout’s shot-making was spunky but she was adjudged caught soon after in a contentious call that saw the umpires going upstairs to a catch from Brown that even Australia were only half convinced about.
