Stumps An extraordinary day from the outset ended with the third Test intriguingly poised after Ollie Robinson’s five-wicket haul put South Africa on the ropes before the touring bowlers, led by Marco Jansen, curbed England’s advantage.Seventeen wickets fell at The Oval on what was officially the third day but effectively the first after Friday’s pause in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, whose death on Thursday was announced shortly after that day’s play was washed out. With only three days to play, the national anthems were finally sung – movingly without musical accompaniment by Laura Wright – including the first rendition of “God Save the King” at a sporting event since 1952. Then play commenced in what appeared to be slightly more batter-friendly conditions than when Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first under stormy skies 48 hours earlier. But – Ollie Pope’s half-century aside – that didn’t prove to be the case. South Africa lost five wickets inside the first hour, three of them to Robinson and one each to Stuart Broad – who extracted plenty of movement in both directions to trouble the batters relentlessly – and James Anderson. It was the lines and lengths of the three England seamers that did the damage early on as the tourists’ selection shake-up aimed at shoring up their batting flopped.Robinson took 5 for 49, including 4 for 21 before lunch in an impressive eight-over spell with the new ball, and Broad took four to contain South Africa to a paltry first-innings 118.Both England openers fell cheaply to Jansen – also South Africa’s top-scorer – who fired a fuller ball into the top of Alex Lees’ middle stump and then had Zak Crawley out lbw for a laboured 5 off 33 balls, the batter’s decision to review reeking of desperation as replays showed he was plumb.Jansen also removed Joe Root and debutant Harry Brook either side of a half-hour rain delay before England got their noses in front, only to lose Stokes and Pope in contrasting innings.Stokes was gone in single figures edging Anrich Nortje to Sarel Erwee at first slip while Pope defied the run of play with a doughty 67 before giving an expensive Kagiso Rabada his first wicket, caught behind. Pope was assertive, compiling his score with 13 fours before he went fishing outside off-stump as Rabada, who conceded 78 runs for his two wickets, finally found his line.Rabada also had Broad caught behind by Kyle Verreynne, who clung onto a late-wobbling edge to send England seven wickets down shortly before the players left the field for bad light at 6.28pm and didn’t return, leaving the hosts with a lead of just 36.Brook got off the mark with the first of two fours in three balls, driven through cover point and threaded slightly squarer. But he fell for 12, sending a shorter Jansen delivery to Rabada at backward square leg and Jansen ended with 4 for 34 from his 11 overs.Earlier, Robinson – who came under criticism for his fitness levels at the end of England’s ill-fated Ashes tour last winter and subsequently spent seven months out of the Test side with a series of health and injury problems – had been the architect of South Africa’s remarkable collapse to 36 for 6.His third ball – the ninth of the match, to remove South Africa captain Dean Elgar, was a gem – on a length and shaping in as Elgar played around it only to see his off stump go cartwheeling.Anderson struck next over, drawing an outside edge from Erwee with a length ball outside off that moved ever so slightly away from the batter, who sent a catch straight to Foakes.Robinson then clipped the top of off stump as Keegan Petersen left a fuller one, and then had Verreynne caught behind for a second-ball duck with an excellent length delivery that moved away off the pitch slightly and found the outside edge.In between, Ryan Rickelton, playing his third Test – and first since April – after being brought in to replace the injured Rassie van der Dussen, had just started to settle when Broad lured him into a drive and had him caught behind for 11.The visitors had brought in Wiaan Mulder for the first time this series, locked at 1-1, but he provided Robinson’s fourth wicket – and Foakes’ fourth catch – when he chased a full, wide ball that swung away late.Zondo, chosen to play after Aiden Markram’s struggle for form prompted yet another change, remained not out at lunch, as did Jansen. The pair put on a stand of 36 for the seventh wicket, easily the strongest union of South Africa’s innings, but they needed more.Jansen topped their scorecard with 30 after being overlooked for the second Test, which South Africa lost by an innings and 85 runs at Old Trafford, having earned a recall due to Lungi Ngidi’s hamstring niggle.Broad saw Jansen dropped twice – by Foakes behind the stumps and Pope at fourth slip – but surprised Zondo with a back-of-a-length delivery that went straight to Lees behind point to put South Africa at 72 for 7. It was the first in a run of three wickets for 18 runs in the space of 33 balls for Broad which closed out South Africa’s innings.Robinson claimed his fifth when he had Jansen comfortably taken by Root at first slip. Broad struck again with another shorter ball, Keshav Maharaj dragging his attempted pull onto his stumps, then had Anrich Nortje caught by Stokes at extra cover.

Big Werner upgrade: Spurs set for talks over sealing "unbelievable" signing

Ange Postecoglou has been the manager of Tottenham Hotspur for a season and a half now, and it would be fair to describe his tenure as mixed.

The Australian has managed to turn his team into one of the most entertaining in all of European football, but that, combined with injuries, has also seen them become rather easy to play against.

On the transfer front, he’s welcomed in some brilliant players, like Dominic Solanke, Micky van de Ven and Archie Gray, but he’s also signed Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner.

The German winger has not been a success in North London, so it’s good news that recent reports have touted an ideal replacement for a move to the club this month.

Tottenham chase incredible talent

According to a recent update from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are one of several clubs interested in Bayern Munich gem Mathys Tel.

Transfer Focus

Romano has revealed that, alongside the Lilywhites, Manchester United and seven other unnamed teams have made contact over signing the player on a loan deal for the rest of the season with talks set to open soon.

However, according to the Italian journalist, the player is after assurances over game time, which, with Solanke out injured, could be something Postecoglou could give him.

Mathys Tel for Bayern Munich

Moreover, reports from earlier this week revealed that the German giants would be willing to accept the offer of around £40m to sell the youngster permanently, should Spurs decide that the best course of action.

In all, while there is a lot of interest in Tel, the North Londoners should do what they can to bring him to N17, as even on loan, he’d be the perfect replacement for Werner.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

How Tel compares to Werner

So, if Spurs can convince the 19-year-old that he should join them for the rest of the season or more, then that would mean he’d be coming to the club under the promise of regular football.

Therefore, he’d surpass Werner in the pecking order, and based on comparisons between the pair, we think that would be entirely correct.

For example, when you compare the Frenchman’s form from last season, when he was actually playing, to the German’s from this same campaign, the difference is night and day.

For his part, the “unbelievable” prospect, as dubbed by reporter Florian Plettenberg, scored ten goals and provided six assists in 41 appearances, totalling 1406 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.56 games, or every 87.87 minutes.

In contrast, the former Chelsea ace scored four goals and provided four assists in 28 appearances, totalling 1295 minutes, which is an average of a goal involvement every 3.5 games, or every 161.87 minutes.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham

Unfortunately for the Stuttgart-born star, the comparison is even more one-sided when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers from the start of last season to today.

For example, the Sarcelles-born dynamo comes out on top in the majority of forward-relevant metrics, including, but not limited to, actual non-penalty goals plus assists, shots and shots on target, goals per shot and shot on target, successful take-ons, shot and goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, Tel is the far superior player in every meaningful way and significantly younger as well.

Therefore, Spurs should be doing all they can to bring him to North London this month, and maybe on more than a loan deal.

Forget Idah: Celtic can find the next Kyogo by handing Celtic star new role

And so, it’s finally over. That gloriously fruitful Celtic and Kyogo Furuhashi relationship has come to an end, with the Japanese sensation embarking for pastures new at Ligue 1 outfit, Rennes.

Having been mooted as a potential target for Premier League champions, Manchester City, over the summer, an exit for the former Vissel Kobe striker did appear inevitable at some stage, with his return of 85 goals in 165 games at Parkhead having unsurprisingly not gone unnoticed.

That said, to have allowed the 30-year-old to depart mid-season – and to a struggling French side, no less – is a decision that will continue to come under scrutiny, not least as the Hoops prepare for a Champions League playoff tie against Bayern Munich next week.

The Old Firm giants did at least manage to rake in a £10m fee for a player who had cost them just £4.6m back in the summer of 2021, yet after spending £8m of those funds on Jota’s homecoming – alongside bringing in Jeffrey Schlupp on loan – no further permanent moves were made before the window slammed shut.

Celtic's failed pursuit of a striker

To have allowed the window to come and go without replacing Kyogo is a puzzling move for the Parkhead hierarchy to have made, with club legend Chris Sutton having stated that Brendan Rodgers and co were in need of a “top class centre forward” as the deadline drew closer.

There may be wisdom in avoiding overpaying or rushing into a panic buy, with the summer window not too far away, yet having likely been aware of Kyogo’s desire to depart for months, it is difficult to understand why an adequate successor was not lined up.

It had looked at one stage that the Hoops were pushing on in an attempt to revive their interest in former target, Mathis Kvistgaarden, albeit with Brondby holding firm over their desire not to sell the 22-year-old marksman.

The Danish striker has been in red-hot form this season with 14 goals in all competitions, ensuring he could have been a worthy, long-term rival for Adam Idah in the Celtic ranks.

That pursuit was also followed by apparent interest in Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho – whom Rodgers had worked with at Leicester City – although the Nigerian ultimately signed on the dotted line for Middlesbrough, with the Scottish champions left empty-handed.

While Rodgers does have £9.5m man, Idah, to call upon – as well as ex-Shamrock Rovers loanee, Johnny Kenny – the Northern Irishman may need to get creative to find his new Kyogo over the coming months.

The Celtic star who could replace Kyogo

With just six Premiership goals to his name this season – and 11 in all competitions – Idah hasn’t quite picked up where he left off last time around, scoring nine times in just 19 games after initially signing on loan from Norwich City.

His recent brace against Aston Villa in the Champions League has further outlined his potential, but if Rodgers is looking to find a striker in the mould of Kyogo, then perhaps Daizen Maeda is the man.

With Jota able to slot in on the left flank, while Nicolas Kuhn remains on the opposite side, deploying Maeda through the middle may be the perfect solution to fitting all three attackers into the starting lineup.

The 22-cap Japan international has rarely featured in that central berth for Celtic, although – as indicated above – it has worked wonders when he has done so, with ten goal involvements in just 11 outings as the number nine, according to Transfermarkt.

Chalkboard

Equally, the 27-year-old has regularly operated ahead of Kyogo in that role for his country, having been hailed as “an absolute livewire” by pundit Rio Ferdinand at the 2022 World Cup.

Also lauded as a “one-man closing down machine” by Sutton in the past, the relentless forward is the perfect option to lead the press as the spearhead of the attack, mimicking his compatriot in never giving a defender a moment’s peace.

What also gives Maeda an advantage over Idah is just how prolific he has been already this season, having scored 16 times – while registering eight assists – in all competitions.

There may be the issue of why should the former Yokohama man be relocated if he is already thriving, yet with Jota now back in the picture, that new look attack could truly wreak havoc on the rest of the Premiership.

Idah, it must be said, offers a great focal point and physical presence at 6 foot 3, yet if it is a Kyogo replacement Rodgers is after, then Maeda may well be the perfect in-house solution.

'They will be inspired' – Coach Harshal Pathak on Thailand's next generation of cricketers

Thinks his side’s semi-final finish at the Women’s Asia Cup will help grow the game back home; happy with the spirit shown after early defeats

You couldn’t fault the Thailand contingent for being excited despite their 74-run loss in the Asia Cup semi-final against India. There was hardly any buzz in the atmosphere at the Sylhet International Stadium, but Thailand’s excitement was infectious. After the match, the two teams posed for a group photo, while some of Thailand’s players sought out their Indian counterparts for selfies. There were many reasons to be happy. Thailand didn’t really make a fist of things on their big day, but restricting India to 148 for 6, and then batting out the 20 overs was a big step for them. For the 12th ranked T20I team in the world, the performance, according to coach Harshal Pathak, was a big deal.Related

He said the team’s effort will have a dual effect on the game back home. The team won’t be given a parade, but there will be a lot of appreciation among the few who follow the game. The bigger influence, though, will be on those who dream of playing for Thailand in the future.”There will be more awareness among the public after the team does well. If you think about the focus group of new cricketers, obviously they will be inspired,” Pathak said. “They are looking up to someone like [Naruemol] Chaiwai, Natthakan [Chantham] and Chanida [Sutthiruang].”Pathak said that after a short break, he will speak to the team about this Asia Cup experience, and how they can grow from it. “We will really evaluate what we have done well, what we want to achieve and how we are going to go about it. We have faced a lot of high-quality bowlers in different situations. We have to understand how we can play dominating cricket.”After crushing defeats at the hands of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Thailand shot back with a four-wicket win over Pakistan. This was followed by wins over UAE and Malaysia, putting them above Bangladesh on the points table. After Bangladesh, the defending champions, lost to Sri Lanka and had their last game rained out against UAE, despite being routed by India to end their round-robin stage Thailand could celebrate at their team hotel in Sylhet with a semi-final spot in the bag.”I expected a little more at the start of the tournament. I was targeting going to the final. But I am very happy with the way the team bounced back after the two [early] losses,” Pathak said. “They have shown character. Adjusted and adapted well.”We had better intent today compared to the first game against India. We got back into the game in the last ten overs with the ball. We took control after they got off to a good start. The bowlers did well, and [the captain] put some really good field settings. We had very good plans today.”He said that his coaching method is also evolving according to the needs of the team. When he joined four years ago, Pathak had said he had to get into a lot of details when explaining things to the players. But now things are different.”Cricket is not the main game in Thailand. In India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, cricket is a religion. You pick up the game by watching around you, and the knowledge base keeps growing as you go through the system. Coaches need to tell the players about plans or fine-tune the mindset.”For a developing [cricket] country like Thailand, a coach has to go quite deep to explain things. At the start of my stint with Thailand, I used to go into a lot of details. Now I have confidence that they can do a lot of things on their own. Now we have to take it to the next level.”

Sri Lanka batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been banned from using Tinder and his social media accounts after being granted bail while awaiting trial on charges of sexual intercourse without consent.Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested in the early hours of November 6 at Sydney’s Hyatt Regency Hotel, where he was staying while the Sri Lankan team were in Australia for the T20 World Cup. Magistrate Janet Wahlquist granted Gunathilaka bail on Thursday in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, where he appeared via audiovisual link from Parklea jail.Police prosecutor Kerry-Ann McKinnon opposed bail on the grounds Gunathilaka is a flight risk and that he could endanger the safety of the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.Wahlquist said she would take into account how bail would be approached if Gunathilaka was an Australian citizen facing the same charges. Murugan Thangaraj SC, for Gunathilaka, agreed that would result in him being released.”Of course he would be on bail in these circumstances,” Thangaraj said.A police facts sheet filed with the court said: “The complainant tried to remove the accused’s hand by grabbing his wrist but the accused squeezed tighter around her neck.””The complainant was fearing for her life and could not get away from the accused.”In a police interview after his arrest, Gunathilaka corroborated some of the alleged victim’s story but denied he had been violent or consent was not given.Prosecutors allege the victim did not consent to sex without a condom or any of the other sexual acts performed.Thangaraj said Gunathilaka had complied with authorities investigating and surrendered his passport.”There is no capacity demonstrated for him to be able to flee,” Thangaraj said.Bail was granted with a AUD 150,000 surety and various conditions, including Gunathilaka not using Tinder or any other dating apps. He’s also prevented from accessing his existing social media accounts unless in the company of his legal team.McKinnon argued the alleged victim could be at risk. “This man was in her home, they walked to the address together,” she said.Thangaraj agreed the pair walked to her home together, but said it was night time, Gunathilaka had never been to the area before and they had walked for up to 15 minutes. “How will he remember where she lived, in those circumstances, even if he wanted to?” Thangaraj said. The unidentified complainant was being harassed via social media, and has had to close her accounts, McKinnon said. The harassment was coming from accounts with “Sri Lankan names”, she said.Thangaraj said that was irrelevant. “He has not encouraged a single person to do a single thing,” he said. “She’s off social media, so that’s all stopped.”Gunathilaka will be required to live at a specific address and report to police daily. After matching on Tinder, meeting up for a date and heading back to her Rose Bay home, the alleged victim claimed the cricketer refused to wear a condom and choked her three times. Gunathilaka travelled to Australia with Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup team but only played in their first game before being ruled out of the competition with a hamstring tear.Sri Lanka were eliminated from the tournament on November 5 after losing their final match. Gunathilaka was due to board a flight back to Sri Lanka the following day.The case will return to court on January 12.

He’s playing like Bellingham: Ange must regret selling Spurs’ £8m "leader"

It would be hard to describe this season as anything other than a failure for Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners have had to deal with an astounding number of injuries to key players, but even then, their domestic form has been nothing short of shambolic, with a run to the League Cup semi-final their only saving grace in that respect.

Moreover, while the club backed Ange Postecoglou with three first-team additions in the winter transfer window, we can’t help but think he needed one or two more.

TottenhamHotspur's Son Heung-min applauds fans after the match

Alternatively, perhaps the club were too quick to sell a player in the summer who has since won comparisons to the incredible Jude Bellingham.

Spurs' 2024 departures

Quite a few first-teamers finally left Spurs during the summer, so before getting to the player in question, it’s worth seeing how a couple of them got on, starting with Emerson Royal.

emerson-royal-tottenham-hotspur-crystal-palace-premier-league-outstanding-revive-mason

The Brazilian full-back joined the Lilywhites in August 2021 but was never quite able to justify his £25.8m price tag and, after consistently underwhelming, eventually became something of a scapegoat, with former Tottenham player turned pundit Jamie O’Hara going as far as calling him a “liability.”

He was finally sold to AC Milan for around £13m in August, and it would be fair to say that his start to life at the San Siro was somewhat rocky, with Italian football expert James Horncastle writing that his move looked ‘like the biggest donation in the history of Fondazione Milan as the club charitably tries to make his wish to become a footballer come true.’

However, he has since become a reasonably important part of the first team, and before his recent calf injury, he had made 26 appearances across all competitions, of which 22 had been starts.

Another defender who left the club in the summer was Joe Rodon, who moved to Leeds United on a permanent deal for around £10m after spending last season on loan with the club at the same time as Archie Gray went the other way.

Thus far, it looks like a move that has panned out perfectly for the Welshman.

Thus far, the centre-back has started 100% of league games for the Whites and played 100% of the minutes, which, when combined with his one start in the FA Cup and League Cup, means he’s made 35 appearances this season for a team that looks destined to win promotion at the second time of asking.

With that said, while both Rodon and Royal are doing well for their respective teams, we can’t imagine Ange regrets letting them leave, which might not be the case for a player who has won comparisons to Bellingham.

The former Spurs ace compared to Bellingham

As a modern midfielder, there probably isn’t a more complimentary modern-day comparison than that of Jude Bellingham, as the former Birmingham City gem has already established himself as one of the best in the world and played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season.

So, it might surprise some Spurs fans that their former player, Giovani Lo Celso, who was eventually sold back to Real Betis for just £8m in the summer, has recently been likened to the Englishman.

The comparison primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in La Liga this season, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the former Borussia Dortmund star is the ninth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Argentine dynamo.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, shots, goal-creating actions, tackles plus interceptions, successful take-ons, carries and more, all per 90.

On top of their statistical similarities, the pair can also fulfil a few different roles in the middle of the park, such as attacking, central, or even, at times, defensive midfield.

However, away from the comparison to one of the game’s most exciting superstars, the former Spurs ace has also been having a great season from an output perspective, as even though he’s playing for a midtable side, he’s been able to rack up a haul of eight goals and one assist in just 20 appearances, totalling 1363 minutes.

That comes out to a brilliant average of a goal involvement every 2.22 games, or every 151.44 minutes.

Ultimately, Spurs had to clear out a number of players over the summer, so while it was probably the right choice in the long term, we imagine Postecoglou would love to have Lo Celso in his squad today.
