Pep means business: Manchester City could sign two new players in January

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola could look at signing two new players in January, according to one reporter.

However, a first defeat of the Premier League season came at the end of September, and City have since lost to Arsenal and Aston Villa, while also dropping points against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham.

As a result, City find themselves in an unusual fourth place in the top flight, four points behind leaders Liverpool after 16 rounds of fixtures. An EFL Cup triumph is out of the question after being knocked out by Newcastle United, and by the looks of things, reinforcements could be made in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider shared a transfer update from the Etihad, claiming Man City could look at bringing in two new players in the New Year. A new midfielder may arrive with Kalvin Phillips expected to depart, whereas a new forward after Erling Haaland’s recent injury scare could also be on the agenda.

City will be looking to defend their Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League crowns in the New Year, and Guardiola could look to do everything he can to bring more success to the Etihad by adding to his ranks.

Man City transfer targets

There haven’t been a shortage of transfer rumours ahead of the New Year, with City linked with moving for a number of new players. A recent attacker to be linked with a move to Manchester is Club Brugge winger Tajon Buchanan, who could command a £50m fee with City still looking for a replacement for Riyad Mahrez who left in the summer for the Saudi Pro League. In midfield, recent reports have claimed that Man City are interested in signing Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram ahead of Liverpool.

Meanwhile, securing the services of a number of youngsters also appears to be on the club’s agenda, with City confident of signing River Plate trio Claudio Echeverri, Agustin Ruberto and Ian Subiabre due to their excellent relationship with the South American giants after a deal for Julian Alvarez in 2022.

Therefore, it looks like it could be a frantic few weeks for City in the transfer window, with Guardiola needing to focus on lifting the club back up the table in the Premier League while also giving the green light to a number of possible exits and arrivals.

Settled New Zealand need only fine-tuning ahead of second ODI

Sri Lanka will take heart from their batting in the first match, but they need wholesale changes if they hope to be contenders at the World Cup

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando04-Jan-2019

New Zealand have fewer worries than Sri Lanka heading into the second ODI•Getty Images

Big PictureThe first ODI was the kind of match from which both teams may feel they have emerged with credit. New Zealand because it was a comfortable victory in the end, and because Martin Guptill and James Neesham – players who had been out for nine and 18 months respectively – rode fearsomely back into ODI form. Sri Lanka because chasing 372, they were not completely annihilated, with bat in hand at least. And yet, it was a game from which Sri Lanka learned very little about themselves, and in which familiar weaknesses were again readily apparent. The visitors lacked wicket-taking capability through the middle overs, and their batting order failed to fire as a unit.Take the comparison with New Zealand. While through their middle overs, Guptill struck up a 163-run stand with Kane Williamson, then an 88-run stand with Ross Taylor – Sri Lanka’s two spinners unable to claim a wicket between them – the legspin of Ish Sodhi and the seam bowling of Neesham accounted for five wickets between overs 17 and 41. And although Sri Lanka had had the better start, their middle order failed abysmally – four batsmen not only failing to reach 20, but striking at less than 100 as well. That the teams only have 48 hours to recover and regroup might suit New Zealand just fine. There may have been one or two minor worries for them from Thursday – Matt Henry’s figures of 1 for 87 among them. But these are fine-tuning issues. Sri Lanka still have wholesale changes to make before they can even hope to be contenders at the World Cup in June.Form guideNew Zealand WLWLW (completed matches, most recent first)
Sri LankaLWLLLIn the spotlightKusal Perera was never expected to be a reliable run-machine, but it was hoped he would eventually learn the difference between good hitting and good batting, which would in turn see him make substantial scores more consistently. On Thursday, Perera batted as well as he ever has in ODIs, consistently taking good options, and sensing when to knock the ball around for a couple of overs, rather than throwing his powerful arms at everything that fell in his hitting arc. One innings isn’t enough to suggest he is now a mature player, but there were glimpses in that innings of the type of batsman Sri Lanka want him to become.Corey Anderson, Colin de Grandhomme… even Mitchell Santner – James Neesham has a lot of competition for that allrounder’s position, and before this series, he was well back in the queue. So he produced a performance that could not have possibly commanded more attention. During his 47 not out off 13, he rattled an opposition death bowler who had been good until then (Thisara Perera had 2 for 46 from nine overs before Neesham clobbered him for 34 in his final over). Then with the ball, Neesham made breakthroughs at a crucial stage of the innings to pick up stellar figures of 3 for 38. Another couple of all-round displays such as this, and he might just have a shot of playing himself into New Zealand’s best XI.Team newsGiven Matt Henry’s troubles, New Zealand may opt to give Doug Bracewell a run in the second game. They are unlikely to make too many changes while the series is still live.New Zealand: 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 Tim Seifert (wk), 7 James Neesham, 8 Ish Sodhi, 9 Doug Bracewell, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Lockie FergusonSri Lanka may toy with dropping Asela Gunaratne for Dasun Shanaka, who had produced a few good innings in the recent series against South Africa an England. They may reflect that they need another specialist bowler as well.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Danushka Gunathilaka, 2 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3 Kusal Perera, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Lakshan Sandakan, 9 Lasith Malinga (capt) 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Nuwan PradeepPitch and conditionsA slower track is expected for Saturday’s match, which means that although it should still have plenty of runs, it may not be as high-scoring a game as the first ODI. The weather is expected to be good, with temperatures hovering around the mid 20s in the afternoon.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have now lost their last seven live ODIs. Their three most-recent wins all came in dead rubbers, in matches in which the opposition fielded a weakened XI. James Neesham’s strike rate on Thursday was 361.53 – the second highest for any ODI innings worth 25 runs or more. The highest strike rate was recorded by James Franklin, who hit 31 not out off 8 balls against Canada in the 2011 World Cup. Although Thisara Perera conceded the third-equal most expensive over in ODI history, he has actually been the benefactor of the second-most expensive over, when he struck Robin Peterson for five sixes and a four in Pallekele in 2013 (Peterson also bowled a wide, which meant 35 runs came from the over).

'Will show BCCI security plans in place for World Cup' – Manohar

ICC chairman says BCCI’s letter and the concerns expressed in it will be placed before the board

ICC chairman Shashank Manohar has said that security would always remain a “top priority” for the global governing body of the sport, and that the BCCI would be shown the security plans put in place for the World Cup during an ICC meeting in March.Manohar’s comments came in the wake of the BCCI sending a letter to the ICC heads raising security issues at the upcoming 2019 World Cup, to be played in England and Wales, among other things.”I have received the BCCI’s letter. Security has, and always will be, the top priority of the ICC. When the ICC (board members) meet in Dubai on March 2, we will show the BCCI all the security plans which have been put in place for the World Cup,” Manohar was quoted as saying by . “They can satisfy themselves over the arrangements for the World Cup. Every board is entitled to do that.”ALSO READ: ‘Would personally hate to give them two points’ – TendulkarThe letter was composed after a BCCI meeting on Friday, where the Indian board kept on hold a decision on playing Pakistan at the World Cup, but requested the ICC to ask its members to “sever ties with countries from which terrorism emanates”.”As far as other issues are concerned, I will place BCCI’s letter and the concerns expressed therein, before the ICC Board,” Manohar said. The updates came after the BCCI had mulled the option of calling for a complete ban on Pakistan from the upcoming World Cup, via a draft letter prepared on Wednesday. The move was in response to the recent terror attack in Pulwama in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in which more than 40 troops were killed. A Pakistan-based terrorist organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Indian government’s stand is that Pakistan supports terrorism in India. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s prime minister and Patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board, has denied that allegation and asked India to share actionable evidence.

Arsenal could move Rice into a new role by signing £70m "monster"

Arsenal’s relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Brighton last weekend was their 12th Premier League victory of the campaign.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz secured all three points, which took them to the top of the table.

However, despite dominating this season, Mikel Arteta is still keen to reinforce his midfield in January.

Arsenal transfers latest – Amadou Onana

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing a midfielder as they prepare for life without Thomas Partey, and Everton’s Amadou Onana is being watched closely.

amadou-onana-thomas-partey-everton-martin-keown-transfer-arsenal

The Toffees have placed a £70m price tag on the Belgian, as per reports earlier this year, which may deter the Gunners away this January.

Furthermore, financial fair play guidelines will prevent Arteta’s side from splashing the cash this winter, making any high-profile move unlikely unless there are outgoings at the club.

How Amadou Onana would benefit Declan Rice

Onana has featured 13 times for Everton this season, and his influence in the midfield is integral to the way Sean Dyche’s side performs.

The 22-year-old has played in a midfield two or a midfield three this season, however, he has been hit with a setback in the form of a calf injury, which has made him miss four games.

The Belgium international is a pure athlete who can cover ground quickly using his 6 foot 4 frame. For someone of his stature, he boasts excellent technical ability and a vast passing range. He’s also incredible out of possession, using his physicality and long legs to make tackles and interceptions. As such ,he has been labelled a “duel-winning monster” by the founder of the Premier League Panel, Raj Chohan.

The ex-Lille star can also perform in multiple roles within the midfield, whether that be in a double pivot, as a lone defensive midfielder, or more of a box-to-box eight. Yet, if he were to make a switch to the London club, he may be asked to sit slightly deeper, allowing Declan Rice to flourish in a new role.

It isn't often that Arsenal are under pressure or want to remain slightly more compact due to the opposition, but with crucial matches coming up in the Champions League and in the Premier League, Arteta may want to field a slightly more defensive-minded midfielder in the left-eight role that Havertz has featured in this season.

andre-declan-rice-liverpool-opinion

Rice is the perfect man for the job, and he has displayed qualities that would make him thrive in that exact position.

Indeed, the England star has the ability to retain the ball, work tirelessly out of possession, and progress the play via passing or driving his side up the field with his extreme running power, like we saw versus Brighton last weekend in the 84th minute, surging past Pascal Gross on halfway, bounding into the area and getting a shot off.

Giving the 24-year-old more freedom on the field would only make the Gunners and Rice better, which makes the potential signing of Onana an extremely smart move, as not only can he provide cover and rotation options to the number 41, but he could easily create a formidable partnership alongside him.

South Africa will lose a lot of players to Kolpak in near future – Morne Morkel

‘What security do you give the guys [in terms of] life after cricket?’ the former Test bowler asked of CSA

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Mar-2019

Former South Africa fast bowler Morne Morkel has warned that more South Africans could decide to follow the Kolpak route in the near future, urging Cricket South Africa to be proactive about keeping players at home.”They have to sit down and come up with plans because they’re going to lose a lot of players in the near future and they need to protect against that,” Morkel told .Morkel’s comments came after Duanne Olivier became the 43rd South African to sign a Kolpak deal with an English county, agreeing to a three-year deal with Yorkshire last week. Morkel himself is one of those 43 players, having taken up a contract with Surrey after his international retirement last year.”Do you structure the contracting a little bit better? What security do you give the guys [in terms of] life after cricket? You talk about investing, but once a guy retires, they sort of drift away. I can name a number of players [on] who[m] they have invested a lot of money in, but you don’t see them coaching, you don’t see them involved with our academies.ALSO READ: Duanne Olivier ‘turned down two-year contract’ to go Kolpak, say CSA”Give those guys a platform and say; ‘we’ve invested in you for so many years, when you’re thinking of settling down or moving on, this is where we see a role for you’. I think that communication is not great at the moment so that’s something they can improve on.Morkel played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is before he called time on his international career at the age of 33, having been a regular starter for South Africa through much of his time. He acknowledged that the situation was more tricky for fringe players, for whom turning down an overseas contract might seem a bigger risk.”[When I was younger] I was settled in the team so for me, it was easier to put offers aside and focus on playing with South Africa.”It’s harder for those guys who are in and out of the team. If the communication channels aren’t great and you’re not sure where you fit in, that’s where the biggest challenge comes in. Communication is the key in any business. It’s never nice … it always paints a bad picture of cricket in South Africa. But that’s unfortunately part of our DNA and the struggles we have in South Africa.”Morkel expressed some frustration with the timing of Olivier’s departure, which came after he took 34 wickets across five Tests and two ODIs for South Africa during the home summer, being named Player of the Series in the 3-0 Test sweep against Pakistan. But he also added: “I understand it completely”.”It’s just unfortunate because Duanne had really settled in and is finding his feet … he knows what Test cricket is about. In terms of timing, it’s not great.”[But] I think that decision was made long before a couple of months ago. He weighed his options up and it was a family decision and you have to respect that. It’s never nice to lose quality players, you always want to see them play for South Africa. But I understand it completely and I wish him all the best.”
