The wait for a Chris Gayle special in this BPL season is finally over. The West Indian smashed 126 – the highest score in the BPL – to eliminate Khulna Titans and power Rangpur Riders into the second qualifier. This was the first hundred of the season, Gayle’s fourth in the BPL, and 19th overall in T20 cricket. Khulna, whose young guns have been quite impressive, wilted in face of the six-laden onslaught.Gayle packed his 51-ball innings with 14 sixes and six fours, helping Rangpur hunt down 168 with 28 balls to spare. His 14 sixes is a new BPL record; Gayle bettered his own record of 12 sixes he had hit for Dhaka Gladiators in 2013.Too many shots spoil Khulna’s start
Opener Nazmul Hossain Shanto kickstarted the innings with three fours in eight balls before falling to an unnecessary hoick against Sohag Gazi in the fourth over. Afif Hossain drove his first ball over cover for four and slapped a six four balls later, but was bowled by Malinga in the following over. The trend continued: Mahmudullah struck two sixes and two fours in his 6-ball 20 before holing out to long-on. Khulna were 56 for 3 at that stage.Rangpur apply the brakes
The bowlers built on the early wickets and did not concede a single boundary from Mahmudullah’s dismissal in the seventh over to the 11th over. Klinger broke the shackles when he cut Bopara between point and third man in the next over. Two balls later, however, Bopara’s superb yorker castled Klinger for 21 off 26 balls.Khulna’s late charge
Nicholas Pooran and Ariful Haque then added 40 for the fifth wicket at a run rate of eight to perk up the side. The stand ended when Ariful fell in the 17th over for 29. Ariful had a life in the 14th over when both Mashrafe and the bowler Bopara let a skier fall between them at mid-off, but he failed to cash in.Carlos Brathwaite then continued his excellent form, taking 17 runs off Malinga in the 18th over, including a muscular six over extra cover. Malinga, though, flummoxed Pooran with a slower full-toss with the first ball of the last over. He gave away just one boundary of the last over to restrict Khulna to 167 for 6.Archer deal early blows
Gayle teed off with a brace of sixes but Jofra Archer removed Gazi and Brendon McCullum in the third over to leave Rangpur at 25 for 2. From thereon, it was the Gayle show.Gayle storm hits Mirpur
Gayle was severe on Archer, taking him for 20 runs in the fifth over, including a straight six. Abu Jayed was also hit down the ground in the next over before Mohammad Irfan’s legbreaks were deposited for two sixes in the seventh over – the first of which brought up a fifty off 23 balls. Gayle did not spare his West Indies team-mate Brathwaite too as Rangpur surged towards the target. He went onto bring up a 45-ball hundred when he worked Mahmudullah to deep midwicket for a single in the 14th over. He finished the chase when he slammed Shanto for back-to-back sixes in the 16th over. What they said
“I think it is called the Gayle storm. To be honest, he batted outstandingly. We didn’t bowl well up front, because we know about his power and capability.”

Come and get me – Lyon says to England

Confident in his abilities as Australia’s No. 1 spinner, Nathan Lyon has said he wouldn’t mind if the English batsmen come out with a plan of all-out attack against him in Adelaide

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide29-Nov-2017Nathan Lyon has challenged England’s batsmen to try to hit him out of the Australian attack at Adelaide Oval, after the tourists’ attempts to outlast the offspinner in Brisbane proved fruitless.Having talked a big game leading into the series, specifically commenting on his desire to “end a few careers” in the England team, Lyon backed up his words with a performance that made him the undisputed bowler of the match, controlling the scoreboard while claiming five wickets. In doing so he not only tied England’s complement of left-handers in knots, but also allowed Australia’s pace bowlers to avoid being unduly stretched in the absence of an allrounder. After bowling 60 overs, conceding barely 2.5 runs in each, Lyon felt the English will attempt to take a more assertive approach in Adelaide. But at the end of a year in which he successfully conquered the batsmen of India and Bangladesh in their own conditions, he is highly confident in his ability to emerge triumphant regardless of whether he is faced by stonewalling or sabre-rattling.”I think if they did do that [attack] it does definitely play into my hands,” Lyon said before training alongside his mentor John Davison in Adelaide. “I like it when opposition guys try to attack me and try to whack me out of the attack if you’re talking about batting against a spin bowler. It’s a part of the game, name of the game is to take wickets and score runs, so no doubt England will come prepared and they’ll have a different plan for me compared to what they did in the first Test, but it is what it is, about adapting, enjoying the challenge and embracing the game of cricket, having fun and competing hard.”I enjoy bowling to left-handers but also enjoy bowling to right-handers and challenging myself against the best batters in the world. I daresay they’ll change their game to me at some stage, there was a lot more positive intent shown to me and my bowling in the second innings, so it provides a great challenge when guys come at you hard and hopefully you’re in with a chance to take some wickets, so it’s exciting times and I look forward to the challenge they bring.”A cornerstone of Australia’s success over England in the corresponding series four years ago was a batting order stacked with right-handers to attack Graeme Swann. But whereas Swann was physically struggling with a chronic elbow problem that pushed him to retire mid-series, Lyon is at the peak of his powers and more than happy to combine attacking and holding roles as part of a four-man bowling attack alongside Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.”If you talk to Josh and Starcy, they think bowling spin’s pretty easy, you only walk in seven steps and roll the arm over, so if you ask them it’s pretty easy and that’s just my role in the side,” Lyon quipped. “But one thing about the Australian bowling unit is we all respect each other, we’re all really good mates and we all want to see each other do really well. So that’s just part of my role and I’m happy to do whatever I have to do to make sure our quicks are firing and when they come back they’re ready to go and put into place whatever plans Steve Smith and us bowlers come up with.Nathan Lyon added Dawid Malan’s scalp•Getty Images

“I’m looking forward to coming out here [in Adelaide], I know how to bowl out here. I know this will probably spin very similarly to the Gabba. I’ve never seen a Gabba wicket spin as much as it did the whole game, so I was pretty excited by that but I know how to bowl out here, I’ve seen these drop-in wickets and the wickets Damian [Hough] produces spin a fair bit and bounce, so I’m pretty excited about what lies around the corner.”It was in Adelaide a year ago when Lyon and Australia pulled out of a shared dive. The team came in having lost five consecutive Tests while the custodian of the team song underwhelmed in Sri Lanka before taking only one wicket in the first two matches at home to South Africa. Given his subsequent success, the national selectors have been reticent to discuss how close they came to dropping Lyon, but the coach Darren Lehmann’s words to a local radio station remain: “Lyon was in because we couldn’t select [Steve] O’Keefe, he was injured beforehand.”With the benefit of a year’s perspective, Lyon said the Adelaide Test against South Africa was indeed his turning point. “If you look back, it’s probably this Test match last year,” he said. “I really was confident in my own skills to get the job done and really go out there and prove a point that I’m the number one spinner in Australia and I need to start playing like that. Then you go off on the back end of the Australian summer to India, then to Bangladesh and I know there was a lot of pressure put on me to go over to the subcontinent conditions and perform.”I know how to bowl well here in Australia, I know how to compete so I think that is probably where my confidence has come from and I’m very confident with the way the ball is coming out of my hand. I’m still doing a lot of work with John Davison, he’s down here now, I will go out the back straight after this and do a bit more work with him so I’m always trying to get better and trying to look for improvement but I’m very happy with the way they are coming out.”Not only is the ball fizzing out of Lyon’s fingers, but the words are fizzing from his lips, in a way far removed from the shyness that characterised many of his earlier years in the national team. Asked about his pre-Gabba comments and how he had seemed to be a villain in English eyes, Lyon wasn’t quite sure how that fit, but did not resile from his views.”I don’t know about the villain,” he said, “I still stand by my comments. But that is the Australian way, I’m here to play cricket, I’m here to represent my country and do that the best possible way. Right now, I am very happy with the way the ball is coming out of my hand, I’m very confident and really excited playing in an Ashes series, I said that before the first Test match and to be 1-0 up coming into Adelaide, to a sold-out crowd here, it’s a pretty special venue so I’m pretty excited.”The last word on Lyon’s place in this series can go to Sir Ian Botham, seldom known to offer excessive compliments to Australians. “Everyone talked about the seam bowling at the Gabba but Nathan Lyon was for me the standout bowler because he tied up an end,” Botham said in Sydney. “He was the most dangerous bowler on both sides in the first innings of a Test at the Gabba, which is unheard of for a fingerspinner.”

Everton could sign ‘wonderful’ £21m Gnonto alternative

Everton remain desperate for attacking reinforcements as they endeavour to improve their performances in the Premier League this season.

Fortunately, an update has emerged on a late move for a potential transfer target.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Everton are one of the clubs interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko.

Tavolieri took to social media to reveal:

"It's getting tighter for Johan Bakayoko! An offer from PSG sent to PSV is expected early next week around €25M [£21m]. Everton wants to get into the fight."

How good is Johan Bakayoko?

There is no doubt that Sean Dyche will be pushing to add more quality to his attacking line over the remaining days of the transfer window, with pressure mounting on the manager following a disappointing start to the season.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE..

In their opening three Premier League fixtures, the Toffees have failed to pick up a single point and have scored zero goals which has left them rock bottom of the table, something that further demonstrates their desperation for a consistent and reliable man up top to make an impact.

As a result, the signing of Bakayoko could be exactly what Dyche needs to boost the creativity and goal threat in the final third. In fact, he could even be a much better signing than Wilfried Gnonto.

johan-bakayoko-everton

The Leeds United ace has been strongly linked with a move to Goodison Park throughout the transfer window, however, nothing has materialised beyond talks with the west Yorkshire club and rejected bids, although after being isolated from the squad due to a request to leave, Gnonto returned to action in the Championship last weekend.

Over 23 Eredivisie appearances last season, the left-footed Bakayoko – once hailed a "wonderful talent" by scout Jacek Kulig – scored five goals, registered five assists and created six big chances, as well as successfully completing 63% of his dribbles and winning 51% of his duels combined, as per SofaScore.

When comparing the 20-year-old output to Gnonto's last season, the PSV star comfortably outperformed his positional peer in a number of key attributes, notably including goal contributions which the former came out on top on, 13 to 6.

Bakayoko is clearly a more rounded package at this stage of the player's respective careers, registering more shots on target rate (42.6% v 33.3%), shot-creating actions per 90 (4.85 v 3.32), successful take-ons (59.2% v 27.3%), aerial duels (48.1% v 30.8%) and boasting a better pass completion rate (77.6% v 72.3%), as per FBref.

It has also been reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano that despite slow progress, Demarai Gray could still potentially be on the move to the Saudi Pro League over the coming days, so securing the signing of another forward will be absolutely imperative if the winger does exit.

With all considered, if Everton could complete a deal for Bakayoko before Friday's deadline it would be a major coup for the club and could significantly improve their attacking presence as the Toffees fight to retain their top-flight status at the end of the season.

Spurs could have signed £69m upgrade on Conor Gallagher

Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign has been solid, with Ange Postecoglou leading his side to two wins from three, including a wonderful victory over Manchester United.

His transfer business has also been impressive, managing to secure the signings of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario among others as the Australian looked to build a squad that could challenge the top four and secure a return to European competition.

They were also interested in a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher on transfer deadline day, according to reports, yet the former Celtic boss missed plenty of other chances to improve his midfield throughout the window.

What is Conor Gallagher good at?

The Englishman has been in decent form for the Blues so far this term, ranking third across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.4), while also ranking in the top five for accurate passes, big chances created and shots on target per game, showcasing his talents across a wide range of metrics.

Conor-Gallagher-West-Ham-United-target

It represents solid progress by the midfielder, as last term he struggled to display the form that saw him shine at Crystal Palace during the 2021/22 campaign, where he scored eight goals and grabbed five assists for the Eagles.

This dropped to just three goals and one assist last term. Perhaps a move and a fresh start away from the hustle and bustle of Chelsea could have reinvigorated the 23-year-old.

Could Postecoglou have made a more concrete effort to sign a midfielder who has shone on the continent, however? Nicolo Barella was linked with a move to the club during the embryonic stages of the transfer window in June and would arguably have been a better option, albeit an expensive one at a potential £69m.

How good is Nicolo Barella?

The Inter Milan sensation was an integral part of their success during the 2022/23 season as the Serie A side won the Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup while also reaching their first Champions League final for 13 years, losing 1-0 to Manchester City.

nicolo-barella-transfer-gossip-arsenal-inter-milan-edu-arteta-jorginho

Barella displayed his attacking talents throughout the campaign, registering 19 goal contributions – nine goals and ten assists – across all competitions, whilst in the league, he ranked third for key passes per game (1.6) across the squad and first for successful dribbles per game (1.1), further evidence of his attacking skillset.

He could certainly have been a big upgrade on Gallagher. Indeed, the £152k-per-week gem ranked in the top 8% for non-penalty goals, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 12% for shot-creating actions when compared to positional peers over the previous 12 months.

In comparison, Gallagher ranked outside the top 20% when compared to positional peers for the same metrics, and it proves that the Italian is more effective from an attacking point of view and this would have given Postecoglou something different in the midfield area.

Renowned scout Jacek Kulig had plenty of praise for the Inter player, lauding him as a “little warrior” back in 2019, and it looks as though Spurs have missed out big time by failing to bring the 26-year-old to the Premier League during the summer.

Gallagher may prove to be a hit for Spurs, yet the statistics state that Barella would have been the far better choice.

Dale Steyn endured a wicket-less return to first-class cricket, returning 0 for 16 from his 12 overs for the CSA Invitation XI against Zimbabwe in the first day Paarl. He did, however, come close twice: Solomon Mire nicked behind in the first over but was adjudged not out and Hamilton Masakadza, who went on to top-score for Zimbabwe with 79, was dropped at point in the fifth over on 1. Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out for 196 on a 13-wicket day.Apart from Masakadza, no other batsman managed to go past 26 against a relatively inexperienced bowling attack. The Zimbabwe bowlers, however, fared much better, with Kyle Jarvis (2 for 15) and Chris Mpofu (1 for 0) picking up three wickets to leave the Invitation XI at 55 for 3 by close of play. For the Invitation XI, medium-pacers Lizaad Williams and Michael Cohen combined for six wickets, while legspinner Shaun von Berg claimed 3 for 64.

Southampton: Martin dealt injury blow to £60k-p/w "monster" before Leicester

Southampton boss Russell Martin could be dealt another injury blow, as one of his most important players came off injured during their final game of the international break…

How have Southampton started this season?

Southampton winger Samuel Edozie.

The Saints had a miserable 2022/23 season, as they finished 20th in the Premier League and were swiftly dumped to the Championship, after only winning six matches and scoring 25 points.

The South Coast side also lost some of their best players during the transfer window, most notably they sold club legend James Ward-Prowse to West Ham for £30m, Romeo Lavia to Chelsea for £58m and Nathan Tella to Bayer Leverkusen for £20m, in total, which generated £156m in transfer revenue.

Despite losing so many key players before the season started new manager Russell Martin has guided his side to a solid start to the season, as Southampton currently sit seventh in the table on 10 points.

Although they have somewhat started well, the most notable point of their season so far has been their 5-0 thrashing by Sunderland, which ended their unbeaten start to the season.

And it now seems like things could go from bad to worse for the new Saints boss…

Who has suffered an injury at Southampton?

As per Daily Echo senior reporter Alex House, Polish defender Jan Bednarek came off in the 34th minute during his nation's 2-0 loss to Albania in the European Qualifiers.

Despite the disappointing result, the 27-year-old Saints titan was one of the Eagles' stand-out performers during the international break.

His most impressive performance was in Poland’s 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands, where he finished the game with the second-highest rating of 7.8, per Sofascore, only behind goalscorer Robert Lewandowski.

Last summer, the £60k per-week defender left Southampton on loan and moved to Aston Villa but by doing so, he angered the St Mary's fanbase after he described his new club Aston Villa as “massive.”

How big a blow is Bednarek's absence?

After he was recalled from his loan in the January transfer window many Southampton fans were quite right to resent his return.

However, since his comeback on the pitch, he has been an integral part of the squad and heralded as one of Southampton's best players

This was confirmed by his Sofascore rating last season – as after rejoining in January, the "monster" – as once hailed by journalist and analyst Sam Tighe – ranked as the Saint's third-best performer with an average rating of 6.93.

His stand-out performances were also backed up by BBC pundit Garth Crooks, after Southampton’s 1-0 win over Chelsea in February.

He said:

“What a defensive display by Southampton at Stamford Bridge.

“Bednarek was the standout defender for me.

“The Poland international has had a difficult season, but put his body on the line on more than one occasion, organised his defence brilliantly and weathered everything Chelsea could throw at him.”

Bednarek’s injury could mean he misses Southampton’s massive Friday night fixture against third-place Leicester, which would undoubtedly be a gutting blow to Martin and the team.

So far in 2023/24, the £60k-per-week centre-back has started every game this season, so it'll be a tough task to replace him, with the burden likely to fall upon recent summer additions Mason Holgate, who joined on loan from Everton, or versatile 19-year-old Shea Charles, who joined on a permanent deal from Manchester City but is typically a defensive midfielder.
