Rangers Could Ditch Davies For "Strong" Teen Gem

Glasgow Rangers boss Michael Beale has gone all out to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the 2023/24 season, but work still needs to be done on the defence.

Out of eight signings this summer, only two are defenders, Leon Balogun and Dujon Sterling, and with the new season fast approaching, Beale will have act swiftly in order to bring another centre-back to the club.

With Ben Davies failing to inspire confidence among the Gers faithful due to his struggles last season, could he perhaps be on his way out of Ibrox?

Does Ben Davies have a future at Rangers?

Following the end of last season, the Gers appeared to be open to offers for the former Liverpool gem, however, nothing has materialised with regard to him leaving.

The defender ranked in a lowly 16th across the squad for tackles per game last term (0.9) and 14th for overall Sofascore match rating (6.94) while he also endured a woeful performance against Celtic in April, making a key mistake which led to the Parkhead outfit scoring.

The Englishman failed to clear a simple ball in his own penalty area and Celtic ended up scoring their second goal from the blunder as the Light Blues went on to lose the match.

With just over a month to go until the transfer window shuts, Beale may be hoping there is a prospective buyer sooner rather than later.

Who could replace Ben Davies?

The Glasgow side have shown recent interest in young defender Dembo Saidykhan, who currently plays for Steve Biko in The Gambia.

The 19-year-old is also being courted by Southampton and French side Toulouse, suggesting that if Beale wants to make his move, it must be sooner rather than later.

Despite Balogun arriving back for his second spell with Rangers, there is still a need for another centre-back. Saidykhan may not be the answer straight away, yet the teenage titan does hold key attributes which could allow him to shine for the club in the near future.

Rangers manager Michael Beale.

During the U20 World Cup, he certainly showcased why he is attracting attention, shining for The Gambia during their impressive run to the last 16, before being defeated by eventual winners Uruguay.

His displays were that impressive he actually ranked as their second-best defender with regard to overall Sofascore match rating (7.05), while he also ranked fourth for accurate passes (45.8), sixth for tackles (1.5) and fifth for interceptions (one) per game, showcasing not only a solid passing ability, but just how effective he was at the heart of the defence.

Not only did he shine in relation to his teammates during the competition, but the youngster was praised by journalist Hernan Federico Pacheco, who said Saidykhan was “strong” and “agile” across his four matches for The Gambia.

It would certainly be a wildcard option if Beale did decide to go ahead and secure his signature, especially considering he hasn’t played in Europe yet. With Davies struggling at times last term, moving him on for a fee and bringing in Saidykhan could be a shrewd move that could pay off handsomely in the near future.

Piedt, Hendricks three-fors choke India A

South Africa A amassed a 292-run lead courtesy a disciplined show from their bowlers and an unbroken second-innings fifty stand from their openers

Three-fors from Beuran Hendricks and Dane Piedt shot India A out for a first-innings score of 120 runs in 39 overs as South Africa A grabbed a lead of 292 runs on the second day in Pretoria. The opening over of the India A innings set the tone for the visitors’ horrid day as a run-out on the first delivery amounted to R Samarth’s departure, followed by Ishan Kishan holing out to David Miller two balls later. While only four India A batsmen managed to register double-digit scores, none managed to convert their starts.Shreyas Iyer top-scored with with a 32-ball 31 before India A found themselves reeling at 74 for 6 in the 22nd over. India’s struggle was further compounded by Vijay Shankar’s inability to sustain his 32-run sixth-wicket stand with Shahbaz Nadeem, having to retire hurt for 26 at the end of the 31st over. Nadeem added 21 runs to his first-innings bowling returns of 4 for 117 off 39.3 overs – the most bowled by an India A bowler in the first innings.Hendricks accounted for three of India A’s frontline batsmen, while Piedt’s scalps included the opposition captain Karun Nair. Hendricks and Piedt collectively conceded 55 runs from 20 overs. The hosts’ openers, Stephen Cook and Aiden Markram put on 66 without any damage in 20 overs to hand them a bigger advantage.Earlier, South Africa A were dismissed for 346 even though they were 274 for 4 at the end of day one, losing their last six wickets for 40 runs. Mohammed Siraj and Nadeem ran through the lower order but their batsmen could not cash in on the advantage.

Man Utd In The Race For £50m Mainoo Partner

Manchester United are believed to still be in the mix for the signing of Southampton sensation, Romeo Lavia, with Erik ten Hag plotting further midfield reinforcements following the signing of Mason Mount.

How much would Romeo Lavia cost?

According to Daily Mail journalist Simon Jones – writing in his Transfer Confidential column – the Red Devils remain in the race for the 19-year-old's signature alongside Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea, with the Saints ready for what could be a 'big week' with regard to the Belgian's future.

The report suggests that United – as well as an unnamed foreign club – are the 'surprise elements' who are interested in a deal for the former Manchester City youth asset, albeit with the Old Trafford outfit needing to 'sell first' before they can consider making a move.

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

As the piece notes, fellow target Sofyan Amrabat is viewed as a far cheaper alternative due to Fiorentina's asking price of around £25m, with Lavia, by contrast, likely to command a fee of closer to £50m after spending just a solitary season at St Mary's.

How could Lavia slot in at Man United?

There is perhaps an argument to be made that the signing of the one-cap Belgium international could prove something of a setback for fellow teenager, Kobbie Mainoo at the Theatre of Dreams, with the 18-year-old having shown signs of promise during the club's pre-season tour.

Kobbie Mainoo

While the United academy graduate – who was part of the FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2022 – has been ruled out for the first part of the new season due to injury, he had sparkled prior to that, having been described as a "real top player" by club legend, Denis Irwin.

With the England youth international set to remain as part of Ten Hag's squad rather than head out on loan, the addition of Lavia could potentially hamper his chances of game time over the coming months and years.

That being said, however, with the Red Devils having a largely ageing midfield department in the form of Casemiro (31), Christian Eriksen (31) and Fred (30), it could be that the Saints ace and Mainoo are partnered together as the long-term pairing in the centre of the park before too long.

With Lavia typically operating as a defensive midfielder, Ten Hag could perhaps use Mainoo's versatility to deploy the younger man in a more advanced berth, with youth coach Travis Binnion having previously spoken of his tactical flexibility:

"In recent weeks, we’ve seen him play as a 6, 8 and 10, and that shows the making of a really good football brain and an athletic capability to play throughout the pitch and play in different roles and systems. He’s progressing nicely."

Much like Mainoo – who has been dubbed "an exceptional prospect" by journalist Steven Railston – Lavia is also earning rave reviews for his standout form of late, having been hailed as a "baller" by presenter Craig Mitch last season.

That breakout 2022/23 campaign saw the Brussels native start 26 league games for the south coast side, notably averaging an impressive 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game as a marker of his defensive expertise – a record only slightly behind that of Casemiro (4.4 tackles and interceptions per game).

That tough tackling style also seems to be shared by Mainoo – who averaged 6.6 tackles and interceptions per game from his three Football League Trophy appearances last term – ensuring that Ten Hag could have a formidable, youthful duo at his disposal if a deal for Lavia can be agreed.

Not only would it be sweet to beat their Anfield foes to his signature, but the 5 foot 11 ace could also emerge as the core of United's starting XI for the next decade or so.

Narine's 45-ball 79 keeps Knight Riders on top

Sunil Narine ran up his career-best T20 score to help Trinbago Knight Riders prevail by two wickets and make it four wins in five matches in the 2017 CPL

Sunil Narine’s career-best 79 off 45 balls, made partly possible by some horrendous fielding from Barbados Tridents, helped Trinbago Knight Riders retain their top position in the 2017 Caribbean Premier League with a two-wicket win. In a highly entertaining contest, though not necessarily for its quality, Knight Riders squeaked past the Tridents total of 152 for 9 with five balls to spare for their fourth win in five games, while Tridents suffered their second defeat.New-ball strikesAfter inserting Tridents, Knight Riders captain Dwayne Bravo opened with spin in the form of Khaya Pierre. The left-armer dropped short in his second and third deliveries, and Dwayne Smith struck him for a four through point and a six over midwicket. Pierre then adjusted to a fuller length and had Smith, trying to slog, hole out to deep midwicket in the fifth ball of the over.Tridents coach Robin Singh has a reputation for sending bowlers up the order as pinch-hitters, but his ploy failed with Wayne Parnell. Sent up to No. 3, Parnell lasted three balls before Ronsford Beaton had him splicing a catch to midwicket in the second over to leave Tridents on 19 for 2.Shoaib Malik passes 7000 runsTwo nights earlier, in St Lucia, Smith became the sixth player to reach 7000 runs in T20 cricket. On Saturday night, at Queen’s Park Oval, his Tridents team-mate Malik, became the seventh, getting there during a 71-run third-wicket stand with Kane Williamson that repaired the Tridents innings.Malik shone against the medium pacers, driving Kevon Cooper twice to the boundary in the sixth, before unleashing two cuts and a pull off Dwayne Bravo in the ninth. The 7000th run also brought up Malik’s fifty, with a single off Narine. But he fell two balls later to Beaton, who bowled superbly to finish with 2 for 24. Tridents lost wickets consistently thereafter, but brisk cameos from Nicholas Pooran and Akeal Hossain ensured a furious finish to their innings.Best’s worstWayne Parnell’s yorker to bowl Brendon McCullum in the fourth ball of the chase gave Tridents an early lift, but it was short-lived. Tino Best set the tone for a diabolical fielding performance in the following over, with a match-defining drop.Narine had driven Wahab Riaz’s first two balls for four when the bowler dragged his length back to induce a skewed pull back over his head. Best, at mid-off, called off Pollard at mid-on as the ball floated gently for a simple chance, only to spill it and leave Pollard stone-faced.Can’t catch a coldPakistan’s players may have been called back by their board, but Wahab’s team-mates had a funny way of showing how much they’ll miss him, putting down chance after chance off his bowling. Narine was on 35 in the 10th, with the score 70 for 2, when a top-edged pull swirled towards Shamar Springer, who slid at deep square leg but couldn’t hold on.Wahab cramped Darren Bravo later in the over for a caught behind, and two balls later, Pollard had Denesh Ramdin caught at long-on to even the scales at 76 for 4. But Narine continued in his adventurous ways at the other end, striking Malik down the ground for six and then a single to bring up his maiden CPL fifty, off 27 balls. He then flicked Pollard over square leg for six and four in the 13th to move to his career-best T20 score.Wahab, and the drops, returned in the 14th. Narine was on 62 when he skied one to long-on where Barnwell, off balance having skidded on the slick grass, shelled the chance. Two balls later, he put down Dwayne Bravo at deep square leg off Parnell, despite being firm-footed on this occasion.Late Knight dramaKnight Riders needed 21 off 24 balls when wickets started tumbling. Dwayne Bravo played around a good length ball from Springer that jagged back to clean him up for 18. Shadab then dragged Parnell on in the next over for a duck, but Knight Riders still had Narine with eight needed off two overs. He fell on the first ball of the 19th, picking out sweeper cover off Springer. Javon Searles crunched the next delivery to the midwicket boundary, but finished the over having dragged a full toss to Parnell in the circle. It boiled down to Knight Riders needing two runs off the final over with two wickets in hand. Kevon Cooper sealed victory when he drove the first ball from Best through point.

Tottenham: Spurs Want To Raise Offer For "Mountain" Defender

Tottenham Hotspur have "come forward" for Torino defender Perr Schuurs and are willing to outbid Premier League rivals, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign?

Following the signings of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, midfielder James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon, exciting reports in the last few days indicate there will soon be more.

Indeed, Spurs have apparently closed a deal for Rosario Central striker Alejo Veliz, with reliable transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano giving his famous "here we go" to the move.

Meanwhile, new manager Ange Postecoglou is finally nearing his first centre-back signing of the summer, with Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven closing in on a move to north London.

However, despite van de Ven's transfer nearing, it has been reliably reported that Spurs haven't ruled out making two senior central defensive signings – not counting their alleged deal for Blackburn Rovers starlet Ashley Phillips.

As we near deadline day and enter the final phase of this transfer window, it looks to be a very busy month at Spurs, with DAZN journalist Orazio Accomando now saying they've entered the bidding for Schuurs of Torino.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

The centre-back, who has apparently has a verbal agreement in place with Crystal Palace for some time, is being targeted by Spurs as they "come forward" for his signature.

It's added that Tottenham are "willing to raise the offer" to both Schuurs and Torino, presumably meaning they could outbid Palace, but Schuurs is apparently in no hurry to leave.

"Update Schuurs," wrote Accomando on Twitter.

"In addition to Crystal Palace, with which he has had a verbal agreement for some time, Tottenham has come forward again, willing to raise the offer both to Torino and to the player.

"Schuurs has not asked for the transfer and is focused on the season in the grenade, waiting for new developments."

ange-postecoglou-2

How good is Perr Schuurs?

The 23-year-old made 30 appearances for Torino last season, becoming a mainstay under Ivan Juric, with Schuurs even managing two assists in the Italian top flight (WhoScored).

Still young and with plenty of potential to improve, it is unclear how much Torino value their defender at from this update, but reports suggest he could cost around £34m to prise away from the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

Bearing that in mind, if Spurs do have the funds for such a transfer after van de Ven, there is reason to believe he could be worth the investment.

Schuurs tops Torino's charts for some crucial defensive stats, having made more successful tackles and clearances per 90 than any of his teammates in Serie A last season (WhoScored).

The Dutchman also completed 88.2% of his passes out from the back, making him a potentially astute fit for Postecoglou's fluid, attacking system (WhoScored).

Journalist Josh Bunting, commenting on Schuurs late last year, also called him a "mountain" of a defender.

He wrote during a match:

"First Empoli goal in Serie A for Mattia Destro as they lead at Torino. Stunning goal, the touch and the bicycle finish superb however the cross from Tyronne Ebuehi was so well weighted. Should give Destro the confidence to kick on in his season. Perr Schuurs a mountain for Torino."

Rhodes steps in for Hurry for Under-19 World Cup

Recognition for Rhodes at England level comes after he guided Worcestershire to their fifth promotion in 11 years, an achievement with player development at its core

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes will take over as head coach of the Young Lions – the England developmental squad – on an interim basis until the end of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand early in 2018.Rhodes, who has been director of cricket at Worcestershire since 2006, stands in for Andy Hurry following his appointment as director of cricket at Somerset.Recognition for Rhodes at England level comes after he guided Worcestershire to their fifth promotion in 11 years, an achievement with player development at its core.David Parsons, the ECB’s performance director, said: “Losing Andy at the start of a busy and challenging winter left us needing to find a high-quality replacement, and we believe that appointing Steve Rhodes on an interim basis is an excellent solution.”Obviously he is a highly experienced and respected coach as a result of his success with Worcestershire. He has already made a significant contribution to our International Pathway through his work with the England Lions in their training camp in Dubai and white-ball series against Pakistan A in the winter of 2015-16.”He has also spent time with the senior England set-up over the last two summers. And Worcestershire have an outstanding record of contributing players to all levels of the Pathway in recent years, with five involved again this winter – including Adam Finch and Dillon Pennington in the Young Lions squad.”Rhodes will work alongside Hurry in the early stages of the Young Lions winter programme, before taking over ahead of the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand before returning to Worcestershire after the tournament in early February. The ECB will appoint a permanent successor to Hurry in early spring and it would be a surprise if Rhodes, who has been highly committed to the county game since he made his Yorkshire playing debut 36 years ago, became a candidate for a full-time post.Rhodes said: “It is an honour to be asked to work for your country at any level, and I’m really excited about this chance to work with the Young Lions this winter. I’m grateful to everyone at Worcestershire for allowing me to take this opportunity.”I really enjoyed my time with the Lions in Dubai, and learned a lot from working in an international environment which I’ve been able to take back to Worcester for the last couple of seasons.”I’m grateful to everyone at Worcestershire for allowing me to take this opportunity – and I’m lucky to have such high-quality staff who will relish the extra responsibility with me being away.”Rhodes will join the Young Lions at a warm-weather training camp at the Desert Springs Resort in southern Spain from November 11-14.He will then take charge when the squad head for South Africa from November 22 to December 11, for a tri-series which also includes Namibia, before departing for the World Cup in New Zealand on January 2. The first of three group games is against Namibia in Queenstown on January 15 and the final is in Tauranga on February 3.
